★★★★★ "New favourite trope - UNLOCKED - enemies with benefits. I adored absolutely everything about this book. From the characters to the magical system, the global travel and the banter... I laughed, I cried, I screamed for more!" - Goodreads Review

★★★★★ "I was hooked from page one and now I'm emotionally invested in two people who would probs hex each other if they weren't busy falling in love."

Perfect for lovers of the National Treasure movies and high spice, witchy romance books.Who said enemies can't come with benefits?Vella Knight, arcane artifact expert, never expected to be caught practicing banned magic—especially by Matthias Medea, the Witches’ Council most ruthless spellcaster. Instead of turning her in, Matthias offers a chilling spy on her coven or face the Council’s wrath.

The catch? Vella needs a lost relic that only Matthias can find—if that means blackmailing him right back, so be it. Forced into an uneasy alliance, their hunt drags them to the United Kingdom, plunging them into the shadowy world of arcane witchcraft hidden within historical landmarks and forgotten works of art, where every step brings them closer to betrayal—and each other.

Their covens were enemies in a brutal conflict two decades ago, and old grudges run deep. Yet with every stolen glance and razor-sharp quip, the tension between them ignites into something deeper—something far more dangerous.

But some temptations are too strong to resist. As danger closes in and the hunt turns deadly, Vella and Matthias are drawn to a forbidden passion that could doom them both. With time running out and enemies on all sides, they must decide what matters the relic, their survival, or a desire that could destroy them both.

Because while the history books say the conflict of the covens ended twenty years earlier, the truth is a different matter entirely - and magic has a will and a way that no battle line can contain.

BUT I DNF’D.

Listen, the idea was there—like, she’s risking it all for her sister (LOVE that), but to do it, she’s gotta go get cozy with the enemy. You know, typical “oops I caught feelings for my mortal nemesis” situation. Two covens, bad blood, Romeo & Juliet energy—minus the tragic death (for now)???

The premise? Banger. The villain backstory? Had me FUMING, but in that delicious “oh you clever bastard” kinda way. Vella, our main girl? She’s strong, she’s stubborn, and she’d fistfight a demon for her sister—and honestly, SAME. But girl is so stubborn she loops around to being a pain in the ass sometimes, and I was this close to yeeting her into the plot void. Still, I gotta respect the sibling loyalty.

Now this “Mors Dicen” thing? Hadn’t heard of it, which shocked me considering I’ve read more supernatural smut and peens than should be legally allowed. It was refreshing, though—like, shove new magical lingo into my eyeballs, please.

Enter Matt. Mage. Druid. Last of his kind. Tragic backstory. Blah blah Big magical energy—everywhere, if you catch my drift. Total playboy energy, which is usually my catnip, but something felt…off. Like the vibes were there, but someone forgot to plug in his character development. He was… boring as hell…. He’s got a revenge mission against the council he’s literally part of (love the drama), but I needed more. I was bored so much with him

Now, about the writing. Sometimes it felt like the author got distracted mid-thought, and the next paragraph was like a squirrel took the wheel. I had to double back a few times, like “Wait, did I skip a page?” But the movie in my head kept playing, so I went with it.

Even though I bailed early like 75% , I am weirdly sadly curious about book two—Vella and Matt’s spicy forbidden thing, her sister’s fate…I need answers, dammit. Just not right now… I’ll wait for everyone else to read it and tell me

This book was a great witchy novel. Matt and Vella made a great enemies to lovers couple, although at times it seemed like they really laid it on a bit thick with their random praise of each other. It definitely really made some of their dialogue feel forced. Other than the sometimes awkward dialogue between them, this book had a great original supernatural story. I am very excited to see where Sara's story goes since it seems like she might be entering a love triangle with two of Matt's friends/family. I had a pretty good suspicion that "Aunt" Ellaine was going to be a pretty bad lady, so I wasn't very shocked when her truth was revealed. It will be sweet justice when she gets hers! I can't wait to read book 2, Weapon, when it comes out!

Okay this book (and I can already foretell it will be the entire series) literally overtook my life in the best ways dreams and all, H.M I don't know what kind of spells you cast on it but I AM HERE FOR IT! 🥰

Wrath takes you on a magic journey like absolutely no other, but the best part? The places they travel to are real places like Edinburgh Castle (oh just take me back there, my inner child squealed while my now self wanted to know if she actually missed seeing the well) there are also so many different kinds of Witches and magical beings in here that made my soul warm and fuzzy, a certain "haunted house", and of course the bad guys.
And the way it has been written, i don't even have words to describe how amazing this aussie author has done, I seriously haven't been able to get enough, I felt immersed in an incredible magic movie everytime I read, and I haven't felt that in a very very long time.

Everyone should read this 🖤

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - 5 Star Read!

This book. GUYS. I don't even know how to express it.

Enemies with benefits. Magical opposites. Forced Proximity. Amazing banter. TREASURE HUNT,
And - wait for it ...... ONE BED.

I REPEAT, ONE BED!

We have witches from opposing covens - Vella, the niece of the ruling counsellor and thief extraordinaire, and Matthias, head of the Magicae Coven. Oh, and he owns night clubs. Night clubs with, um, extras. Wink wink.

The story starts when Vella is attempting to, uh, liberate some of Matt's artefacts when the drop dead gorgeous man himself catches her in the act ... What comes next is a fabulously crafted story with amazing characters and depth to the world woven to hold this fast paced magical adventure! Chasing clues and racing against the clock Vella and Matt are working toward a common goal ...

OR ARE THEY???

Tropes:
All the good stuff.
Witches. Magic. Paranormal creatures (vampires, shadow monsters, spirit infused artefacts), found family, enemies to friends to lovers to enemies with benefits (to straight up enemies to who knows what in Book 2?), political intrigue, hidden identities, family secrets, magical quest

Triggers:
Violence, ill family member used to manipulate FMC, Death of a family member, genocide, kidnapping, emotional manipulation, blackmail, betrayal, reliving of childhood trauma (magical memory recall), smex club, public activity, poisoning, gun fights, desecration of ancient sacred sites.

This is the first book in a witchy urban fantasy series.
It has an interesting magic system and ther are all kinds of magical beings (vampire, shifter, shades).
The main female character is Vella and she would do anything for her sister, even bending the law a little. She is trying to steal an artifact that could be the answer to heal her but she gets caught by the most handsome MMC . He is a gorgeous Playboy and his d!CK is supposed to be magic.
Their chemistry is electric and I have a new favorite trope enemies with benefits.

What I LOVED:
💀 This was super fast paced and one of those books you struggle to put down. I think it had a lot to do with the ‘treasure hunt’ element, and also the mysteries and hidden identities, but I flew through this.
💀 Genuinely, I think I’m back in my urban fantasy era, because I ADORED the setting and the feel of this book. Having Vella as an antique shop owner and Matt as a club owner, it added a really fun layer to the story.
💀 The different covens and the different types of magic the witches possessed - Divinators, Elixirs, Spellcasters and Mors Dicen - was unique and made the world feel richer.
💀 The dynamic and chemistry between Matt and Vella… YES PLEASE! I loved how their initial interaction and meeting, how their relationship developed, the ‘enemies to benefits’ angle the author took. These two were BUCKETS of fun.
💀 With the paranormal/supernatural/magical beings, I think this gives the world A LOT of potential. Obviously this was the first book so I wasn’t expecting to delve HEAVILY into all these other beings, but I can see how this series can become something super exciting!

What I didn’t love:
💀 I think a few other reviews covered this off, but the writing was odd in places. You know when you have a bunch of different tabs open, and you keep flicking through them quickly without finishing what you were doing in the first tab, yeah, that was the feeling sometimes.

WOULD I STILL RECOMMEND? Yes ✅

WILL I CONTINUE THIS SERIES? Yes ✅

Rarely has a book captured my attention so fully from the very first sentence! Dropping the reader right into the middle of Vella's heist was done so well and I was completely hooked. Likewise Matt's introduction moments later was absolutely perfect and I knew I was in for a great time.

This book had everything: a unique magic system, a treasure hunt, fun and memorable side characters, and a sizzling romance. Only thing that made it not a full five stars was the amount of times the main characters used the word frig/frigging but that's just a personal dislike.

Highly recommend for fans of paranormal romance.

I LOVED the plot of this story. I found it so interesting. The story develops so well. Starting with a girl helping her aunt to to save her sister who soon finds out all is now as it seems.

The mystery element later in the book of tracking down clues to unlock a riddle was 🤌.

The back and forth between Vella and Matthias was so infuriating but also I couldn’t get enough of it. I was screaming in frustration and begging for more.

Absolutely recommend and I can’t wait for the next one!!

This is one of my favorite books this year, an enemies-to-lovers-to-frenemies-to be continued paranormal thriller I couldn't put down, while dreading to reach the end-for-now.
What I liked most are the life lessons and the psychological insight. It's a good parallel with our mundane world, a mirror of how power struggle, lies, greed and manipulation are taken to an art form by monsters feeling gods, with the world in their fists. Anything and everything is theoretically allowed in love and war, and history is definitely written by the victors. Give this a mythological twist of ancient powers and it will make you wonder how many layers of history have been erased from public knowledge, to survive only in myths and legends. How many secrets have died forever untold, how many lives fell victim to evil, how many good people were buried never to find justice in past millennia? Politics, appearances, luxury, war - they are the root of suffering for the common people even today.

The world in this book has reached a black void of oppression, but hope of normalcy is glimmering through the layers, children of the vanquished reaching adulthood and uncovering secrets. I like that their goal, under Matt's leadership, is freedom and the rule of free will for all - a truly noble cause.
And then there's Vella and her goal to save her sister at the top of the pyramid - higher than herself, her happiness, her coven and her newfound love. This brings genuineness to the plot and a burning curiosity to find if she is overestimating her chances or doomed to failure, taking everyone else down with her.

Well written, fast paced, imaginative, with a good plot and well built characters, this is a solid start to a series, and I can't wait to read what's next.

I received an advance review copy for free via BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This brand new urban fantasy romance is filled with witches, a treasure hunt and so many delicious quotes from our resident hottie & MMC Matthias that will have your toes curling and your cheeks blushing! 😏 I’m always keen for a witchy book and this one delivered with covens at war, old-school spell casting and family drama!

When relic expert and good girl Vella Knight is caught using forbidden magic, enforcer, and bad boy, Matthias Medea offers her a choice: spy on her coven or face the wrath of the council. Forced into a reluctant alliance to find a powerful lost artifact, old grudges and growing desire make trust dangerous - and betrayal deadly.

This was such a fun read that was well paced and adventurous with the leads taking readers on a trip around the globe in search of bone runes and answers that may help save Vella’s sister from a mysterious illness. Hodgson’s gripping writing, well thought out plot twists and bucket-loads of tension and chemistry between our main (and side) characters throughout had me engaged from start to finish. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series!!

I thought this story was just ok. Vella is needing to steal the runes from Matthias house and whose also the Witches’ Council most ruthless spellcaster to save her sister from an illness. Vella is caught practicing banned magic by Matthias. Their covens are rivals and Vella needs Matthias help to find the missing relic. The writing was a little off for me. I also didn’t like the too often switch of Matt/Matthias name. The descriptions of the lore & magic should be fleshed out more. It ends some what on a semi cliffy. So I do feel a bit interested on what happens next in Weapon, book 2.

I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Wrath is book 1 in HM Hodgsons new series!
It follows our FMC Velvet (aka Vella) who works in and steals antiques.
Our MMC Matt is a councillor for the witches but from another coven.
We have enemies to casual fun time buddies to enemies to lovers
Bonded mates
Heists
Magic of all kinds
Druids, witches, vampires and shifters
This was a gripping read! I do admit I sometimes struggled with whose POV it was, but that didn’t take away from the great read.

4.25 stars. Vella, the female witch lead, is a thief for what she believes is the right cause - keeping all witches safe under the auspices of the council headed by her Aunt Elaine. She’s also desperate to find a cure for sister’s autoimmune disease that appears to be getting closer to killing her. Sneaking into another councillor’s office, Vella has been told she’ll find potentially helpful runes and no councillor.

Matthias, the male witch lead from a different (less well regarded) coven to Vella, knows he’s fighting for the right cause - the right for all witches to be self-determining and free from tyrannical oversight. When he finds Vella in his office, he’s determined to use the advantage he’s been granted.

Neither of them is pleased by the mutual attraction. Vella definitely doesn’t want to work with Matthias. But the situation pushes them together. And when Vella is shown to be on the wrong side of the battle, she has to make some difficult decisions.

This story is dual POV, well written, and a fast-paced, intense, complex and detailed adventure focused enemies-to-lovers, paranormal contemporary romance which begins a serial. It finishes definitively incomplete but not on a deep cliffhanger. I enjoyed Vella’s loyalty and dedication to her sister. I appreciated that she was willing to take reasonable risks in pursuit of her goals. I empathised with her reactions to the information Matthias provided. I enjoyed Matthias’ planning and dedication, and his unswerving focus on justice. I empathised with historical trauma and damage. I enjoyed the detailed plot slowly being revealed and adored the character interactions and the depth of their development. I enjoyed the solid and integral secondary characters. I enjoyed the building intimacy between the lead characters and the steamy scenes when they got there. I enjoyed the intensity and pace of the non-romance story; it left me with a hangover with I finished. About the only thing I didn’t enjoy is waiting for the next one!

I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.

4- ⭐⭐⭐⭐

But gods, he wanted her. This warrior.

Wrath: Witch Wars is the first instalment in the adult urban fantasy romance series, Witch Wars. Written in third person dual POV, the story follows Vella and Matthew, an arcane artifacts specialist and a spellcaster who find themselves in an uneasy alliance as they search for a lost relic that could change their lives.

Vella has spent her life feeling indebted to her aunt for taking her and her sister and keeping her sister alive as a strange illness weakens her. Stealing for her aunt she finds herself in the crosshairs of Matthew Medea, one of the most ruthless spell caster on the Witches' council...and he catches her doing forbidden magic. He wants her help to unravel secrets of Vella's coven but Vella refuses to give in and wants something in return.

Matthew has his suspicions of Elaine, Vella's aunt, and he is determined to protect and safeguard the freedoms of magic wielders from tyrannical oversight. Despite being drawn in by Vella he needs to use her for the greater good and if allowing her to lead him on a chase across England will get him closer to his goal he's willing to risk his life...but what happens when his heart is on the line.

For two people who’s covens have been waging conflicts for centuries, the trust is low and the risks are high. It becomes clear the history books aren't saying everything but will their desires for each other stop them from doing what is right?

Matthew and Vella have such a fun dynamic that is equal parts angsty and alluring. They don't trust each other and both are hiding a lot but they feel a connection they cannot quite unravel. Vella is being thrust into this new situation of magic she has been confronted with while also bearing the burden of protecting her sister. Matthew has the burden of an entire coven on his shoulder and secrets he knows will change everything. I found their teasing banter worked well to break the ice at times as there is so much under the surface.

“Want you? F-ing hell, Vella. I want to destroy myself in you. You need to know I’m not talking soft and easy and gentle….That is not in me, not now. Are you ready for that?”

In terms of spice I would place this novel at 2.5 spicy peppers out of five spicy peppers. The book is more a slow burn for spice as our mcs have trust issues, with good reason. There are some steamy references and sexual innuendos but home run spice does not take place until the second half. It is explicit and feral and Matthew loves making sure his partner is satisfied. I also really liked the magical consequences that come with spice and the pleasure that ensues. I would say out mcs are still navigating what they mean to each other by the end so the spice acts as more laying the dominoes down but dang am I excited to see where it goes.

The story itself does take some time to get going. There is a focus on laying groundwork to understand the different motivations and the world at large. I found the interactions between Matthew and Vella to be enthralling and drew me in from start to finish. I will say I saw some of the conflict as writing on the wall and that at times these characters can be a bit too trusting. I found once we started the treasure hunt I enjoyed the movement through the story with reveals that challenge the world Vella and Matthew know. I also liked the additional side characters like Brianna who really helped emphasize the world and ground out characters back to their goals. I want to see more of Matthew and Vella together and with how this book ends I am very excited about what will come next.

Overall, this is an excellent introduction to a growing series. The adventure, the banter, and the rivalries really up the tension and will have you on quite the ride!

Thank you to the author and Haus of Fables for this arc!

This book is actual magic, I'm not even kidding. Right from the start I was utterly enchanted by Vella and Matthias. The opening is a little discombobulating but it is soooo good. I am in complete and utter awe by what I just read.

Vella is an arcane artifact expert who is charged by her Aunt Ellaine, to find and locate various artifacts. One of these missions lead her directly to Matthias who is part of the Witches' Council. The two enter a reluctant alliance to locate additional artifacts but at stake are their individual goals: for Vella, it's her sister, Sara, and for Matthias, it's his family and his people. But as the two work together they start learning about one another and see each other in a new light, the problem is is any of this worth risking what's at stake?

Like I said, I absolute LOVED this story. The urban fantasy setting isn't something I typically read but Hodgson create a world where it all makes sense. The blend between the magical and modern/contemporary world is fascinating, especially when real world places are brought in to the story. The worldbuilding is very intriguing and the characters stay true to who they are. The story is fast-paced and tense because the stakes are high and the interactions between the characters are so well written but the writing itself is also engaging. From the first, it's difficult to not be drawn in to the world of Witch Wars where the mystery and intrigue are already slowly casting its spell. So yes, WRATH: Witch Wars is a sheer delight and yes, you should absolutely read it! I know I can't wait for the next book and the rest of the series!

Thank you to Haus of Fables and H.M. Hodgson for the gifted ARC! All opinions are my own.

If you're a fan of urban fantasy with a sizzling romantic twist, Hodgson’s latest novel is one you need on your TBR. This genre-blending gem introduces a new favourite trope for many—enemies with benefits—and executes it with spellbinding finesse.
From the very first page, I was completely hooked. The story opens with Vella Knight, a rule-following relic expert who finds herself in hot water after dabbling in forbidden magic. Enter Matthias Medea, the brooding enforcer with a sharp tongue and even sharper cheekbones, who gives her a choice: become a spy for the council or face the consequences. What follows is a reluctant partnership full of fiery tension, sarcastic banter, and slow-burning chemistry that had me laughing, swooning, and dying for more.
The world-building is rich and immersive, with covens at war, old-school spell-casting, global treasure hunts, and a magical system that feels both fresh and grounded. The quest to find powerful bone runes takes readers on a whirlwind adventure across continents, all while the emotional stakes grow higher and Vella’s sister’s mysterious illness looms over every decision.
Hodgson masterfully balances action and romance, delivering clever plot twists and emotionally complex characters. The side cast is just as compelling as the leads, and the dialogue—especially from Matthias—is packed with memorable lines that had me grinning like a fool.
This book has everything: witches, tension-filled alliances, family secrets, steamy moments, and just the right amount of angst. It’s a fun, fast-paced ride with depth and heart, and I’m already counting down the days until the next instalment in the series.

I received this book as an ARC.

Blurb: Dark secrets, outlawed magic, and a game of blackmail and betrayal await in WRATH-Witch Wars.

Tropes:
Enemies to Lovers
Forbidden Magic
Antiheroes you'll love to hate

This was a generally good book for the first in a series. I enjoyed the idea of it. She is fighting for her sister's life, however, it is by consorting with the enemy, who she starts to develop feelings for. They are a part of two different covens, it gives a Romeo & Juliet vibe. She has a really good premise, and that villain backstory was infuriating, in a good way!

Her main character Vella, is a strong character. Stubborn, but to a fault. I wasn't a fan of that. However, loved her loyalty to her sister-I could absolutely relate to that. Her background as a "Mors Dicen" was one that I had not heard before, considering how much I've read. Which was invigorating! A lot of the terminology in this book was new to me and I enjoyed reading about them and learning them all.

Matt, her love interest, is a mage and a Druid at that. Last of his kind. Playboy with a magical 'member', which is always fun to read and daydream about. His character was a little lacking considering his playboy persona. Has a vendetta to take down the council that he's a part of. When you read it, you'll understand why.

I feel though that the writing kind of fell apart in some instances. It was like she didn't finish an idea in one paragraph and skipped ahead to a different one. It happened a couple of different times, but it didn't take away from the story playing in my head.

I am looking forward to book two because I do want to see where their love story goes and what happens to Vella and Sara (her sister).

Oh gods I loved this book! With so many twists and turns, I was always captivated by this story. although my favourite aspect was the mystery-feel of it all and the completely relatable writing. I was hooked from the start with this one.

Starting with the FMC, Velvet - or Vella as she went by. She was one badass women, not a damsel waiting for saving, which are my favourite. She's smart as he'll, very capable of protecting herself and those she deems worth it, and brave even while she's terrified. A fighter.
I enjoyed her quick wit, especially when she let herself enjoy the moments in Mattias' company.

Now, the MMC was Matt, short for Mattias (winning name choice!), and he was a tall drink of water. Strong, courageous, honorable and alll power. As the head of his coven, he takes his role seriously as both a leader and a witch; which is so apparent through the whole book. He's a good man.
And the connection between these two was a flame they could never extinguish. and with a trope like 𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘵𝘴, you know it's going to be hot as helll ... 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀.

Can't forget to mention the top side character; Brianna. Always by Vella's side, she was crucial to Vella's growth as a character. I won't say much, but she was very entertaining and such an amazing support for Vella when she had no one else to trust.

This book grabbed me by the collar and threw me into a magical fistfight before I even had time to get comfortable. No slow burn, no drawn-out intro—just BAM! Heroine meets hero, sparks fly (and some actual kicks, thanks to Vela), and we’re off to the enemies-to-lovers races.

--Attention: SPOILERS--
Vela is the definition of "do not mess with me unless you enjoy being hexed into next week." A fierce fighter witch with a soft spot when it comes to her sister. And then there’s Mat—Mr. "Greater Good," who walks into this story like the hot mafia ceo (no, he is not, but this was the first impresion I've got on him). He’s noble (I mean really, he has a title), he’s broody, and he’s this close to ruining everything (mind your manners, mister)…. Probably because the tension between him and Vela could light up an entire haunted castle).

The chemistry? 🔥 The banter? Sharp enough to leave emotional scars ( or were they also phisical?)…

And the secrets from their past?? Oh, honey. This book has enough emotional landmines to keep your heart in a permanent state of “WTH??”

And let’s talk about that ending. OPEN. ENDING. I’m not okay. I mean did Vela save her sister? Did Mat finally admit he's in love with a lioness-witch who could kick his ass if he says the wrong thing? IS SHE PREGNANT?! Someone call a Div because I need ANSWERS. No, delete that, don't call them, I'll find out myself.

Final verdict: 10/10 recommend if you like action from page one, magical world, emotional rollercoasters, and yelling “YOU ARE MADE FOR EACH OTHER!!!” every other chapter.

Bring on book two. My soul isn’t ready, but I am. 🖤✨

There's a few types of magical abilities in this series with the main covens being:
Magicae - draw magic from themselves and can cast spells (spellcasters)
Divinators - draw magic from humans and can predict events (seers)
Elixirs - draw magic from chemical reactions (potions)

Immediately we get thrown into the story where we meet Vella who looking for runes to steal back to her aunt. She's been told these runes might have a cure or clue as to how to cure her sister who is critically sick. Upon looking for the runes in councilor Matthias' bedroom ends up talking to a bone knife a forbidden magic that should not exist. Matthias catches her red handed and the sexual tension that comes between them in the first few chapters is delicious.

The duel pov between Vella and Matthias is well crafted as they have to work together to achieve a common goal of finding the bone runes.

Vella is such a caring character who will stop at nothing to protect and save those she loves and I really loved her rational. She's a black cat and the energy she gives is immaculate.

Matthias is made to seem dark and edgy by running clubs and labelled as a playboy but there's so so much more to him. The trauma. The tattoos. He's definitely a golden retriever. I'm invested in him and need more.

You'll definitely love this book if you enjoy tropes like:
- enemies to lovers
- deception
- magic systems
- witches/wizards
- complicated political games

Also book 2 when? Like I need to read it.

feel like I haven’t read a witchy book in forever—especially one with real spoken spells, brews, and magical rituals. I forgot how much I love them.

Vella will do whatever it takes to help her sister, who’s been suffering from a lifelong autoimmune disease. That includes helping her Aunt Elaine—counselor of the Divinator coven—“procure” magical arcana, both to protect the covens and in the desperate hope of uncovering a cure. Which is exactly how she ends up breaking into the room of the infamous club owner and notorious playboy, Counselor Matthias Medea of the Magicae coven.

But when he catches her in the act—accidentally using banned magic—he blackmails her into spying on her own coven or risking being turned in. Unfortunately for him, he underestimates her—Vella turns the tables and blackmails him right back. Forced into an uneasy alliance, the two must work together to solve ancient riddles that lead to the elusive bone runes. But can Vella find the runes, navigate tangled loyalties... and ideally avoid falling into bed with Matthias? (Well—two out of three isn’t bad.)

This was a wild ride. I adored Vella—she’s innocent in some ways, but her unwavering determination is impossible to shake. And then there’s Matthias: dark, gritty, impossibly sexy, with a filthy mouth and a mission to overthrow Vella’s aunt for the good of his coven and all witchkind. They’re kind of perfect. They fit. And this world is so vivid and immersive. I’m fully on board for wherever this ride goes next.

Thank you for this gifted ARC from Haus of Fables

Wrath: Witch Wars delivers an electric mix of magical intrigue, sharp-tongued banter, and a romance that smolders beneath layers of betrayal and bitterness. Set two decades after a brutal war between covens, the story follows Vella, a fierce and cunning witch with a mission—and an agenda. To retrieve a lost relic crucial to her people’s future, she turns to the one man she should never trust: Matthias, a war-scarred witch from the enemy coven who knows exactly where to find it.

What starts as blackmail quickly spirals into a dangerous alliance as the pair venture through the United Kingdom’s shadowy magical underworld. Hodgson brings history and magic together in inventive ways, weaving witchcraft into forgotten landmarks and dusty corners of British lore. Each setting feels like a puzzle piece with purpose, drawing you deeper into a world teetering on the edge of rekindled war.

But it’s the relationship between Vella and Matthias that truly drives the narrative. Their interactions are tense, biting, and laced with history—both personal and political. As they’re forced to rely on each other, their bond evolves from wary tolerance to fiery attraction, complicating every decision they make. Hodgson handles the enemies-to-lovers arc with care, never rushing the emotional payoff while allowing sparks to fly in the quietest—and loudest—moments.

The pacing keeps things moving, though a few side characters and plotlines could use more development. Still, the story’s emotional stakes and layered conflict make this a page-turner from start to finish.

📖: Wrath: Witch Wars

“𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘭𝘪𝘱𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘩 𝘰𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘨𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘯.”

Vella is caught while trying to recover an item that may hold the answers to saving her ailing sister. That fateful night places her directly in the path of the notorious rival coven spellcaster Matthias. But with her also being the niece of the Divinator Councilor, her misstep needs to be kept under wraps.

A reluctant alliance is formed to recover a powerful and illusive artifact. But betrayals, deadIy secrets, and forbidden passions may deter them from their respective goals…

Tropes to expect:
🏙️Urban fantasy romance
🧙🏻‍♀️‬‭Paranormal mystery‬
⚠️‬‭Enemies to reluctant allies to lovers
🚫Forbidden love‬
💫Arcane witchcraft‬
🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒Found family‬
🫂Forced proximity
🧛🏻‍♂️Vampires, druids and shifters‬
🔭Treasure hunt‬
🌶️: open door

Vella is devoted, scholarly, and tenacious. Her dedication to helping her sister is unfailing. But as difficult truths come to light, everything Vella thought she knew is challenged.

We also need to talk about this MMC because not only is Magicae Councilor Matthias Medea is hot, he’s also tattooed, has *dimples* and a BRITISH ACCENT. 😮‍💨 I mean, Vella doesn’t stand a chance 😂. Their exchanges had me cackling and their chemistry was so charged. With the impending witch conflicts, which sides will they choose to stand with?

Wrath: Witch Wars is a globetrotting adventure filled with dangerous magic, sinister secrets, and burning tension. I loved the National Treasure vibes with a paranormal twist!

Huge thanks to the author and @haus.of.fables_pr for the gifted review copy opportunity. This is my honest and voluntary review.

Check CWs before reading

This was a hard one for me to rate. I enjoyed the premise of the story. I loved the characters and the idea of the whole National Treasure meets PNR meets The Librarians with almost a Romeo and Juliet-esque feel to narrative (in terms of the relationship between Matt and Vella). I LOVE me some treasure hunting. Just something about the writing wasn't quite... there (and I've tried to explain to others what was missing and I can't work it out).

I enjoyed the modern twist to the story - with the blurb, it felt like this could be set in more historical times, but I love that Hodgson brought it into the modern era with the use of phones and the internet (certainly helps with the treasure hunting).

I did find at times the story dragged, to the point where I found myself skimming some of the pages. I also, like other readers, did find some of the thoughts incomplete and disjointed. It detracted a little from the overall enjoyment of the book, but also in a strange way helped me to keep reading, needing to know what those incomplete thoughts were - and so many little thoughts and plot bunnies were given to us with each chapter.

Let's not forget to mention about the, uh, magic side of Matt when things get... well, let's say what it is - spicy. That was an element I was not expecting, and I was here for it. Honestly, the overall character design of Matt (so hard to explain without spoiling) was one of my favourite aspects of the book - just something about who he truly was kept me reading.

In saying all this, I am still very intrigued where the story will continue in the next book, as I did find myself very invested in this hunt for a cure for Vella's sister (even though I picked what was happening there almost from the start 😅). Looking forward to the release of book two to get some of these niggling questions - and plot bunnies - answered.

Thank you to the author and Haus of Fables for the eARC opportunity. These are my honest thoughts that I have provided voluntarily.

H.M. Hodgson's Wrath: Witch Wars delivers a captivating blend of forbidden magic, political intrigue, and sizzling romance. The novel introduces readers to Vella Knight, an arcane artifact expert caught practicing banned magic, and Matthias Medea, the Witches’ Council's most formidable enforcer. Their forced alliance to recover a lost relic sets the stage for a thrilling enemies-to-lovers narrative that keeps the pages turning.
The dynamic between Vella and Matthias is electric, filled with sharp banter and undeniable tension. Their journey through a richly imagined world of hidden witchcraft and ancient artifacts is both exciting and immersive. Hodgson's writing shines in the vivid descriptions and the intricate magic system that underpins the story.
While the romance and world-building are standout elements, some readers might find the pacing uneven in parts, with certain plot developments feeling rushed. Additionally, the abundance of explicit content may not be to everyone's taste, though it aligns with the genre's conventions.
Overall, Wrath: Witch Wars is a strong opening to the series, offering a compelling mix of danger, desire, and dark magic. Fans of paranormal romance with a penchant for complex characters and steamy encounters will find much to enjoy here.

What a BANGIN' treat this book was!

This enemies-to-lovers, dual POV paranormal romance hooked me from page one. Vella’s a witch and a thief—but only for what she believes is the right cause: protecting her people and saving her sister.

Matthias, from a less privileged coven, wants freedom from council control. When their paths collide (literally, in his office), they’re forced to work together despite very real tension—and very unwanted attraction.

I loved Vella’s fierce loyalty and Matthias’ unwavering sense of justice. The plot is detailed, the pace relentless, and the emotional and romantic tension kept building until it exploded—in the best way.

This book felt like a journey in the best way. Travelling through England stirred up so many cozy memories from my own childhood in the countryside—it felt like coming home. The magic system was fresh, creative, and unlike anything I’ve read before—totally captivating. The side characters were just as compelling as the leads, and the world-building was so rich I didn’t want to leave.

Steamy, smart, intense, and addictive. Only downside? Waiting for book two!

Super grateful to Haus of Fables and H M Hodgson for gifting me this ARC.

Vella is the niece of the Divinaator Councilor, one of the most powerful Divinators. She has always been lacking in power, but she does what she can to help her aunt and her sister, even if it means stealing from other witches. Vella's sister, Sara, has always been sick and Vella's aunt assures Vella that these items she steals will get them closer to finding a cure for Sara's sickness.

Matthias is the Magicae Councilor and will do anything for his coven and family. Matt and Vella meet when he catches her trying to steal from him, at the behest of her aunt. Matt discovers something about Vella that she never knew and if others knew, she would be imprisoned at best. But Vella also learns secrets about Matt. They both blackmail the other and decide that working together is the best chance they have to reach their goals. Forces to travel in close proximity, Vellas and Mart develop some scorching tension. As they work together, they each discover more secrets about the other and they grow closer and closer.

This was a fun Urban fantasy romance with lots of tension. There is also some political intrigue with hidden identities. I greatly enjoyed the story and can't wait for book 2!

Thank you to @hausoffables_pr and @hmhodgson for the gifted eARC.

Vella: caught mid theft using banned magic by head of rival witch clan Matthias who is now blackmailing her, will do anything to protect and care for her sick sister (including steal from witch clans at the beck and call of her terrible aunt)
Matthias: blackmail aside all he wants is what’s best for his clan and that includes destroying Vella’s aunt and the hold she has had on the witch clans, he’s willing to use Vella as a tool to get it done but also is insanely attracted to her and so is his magic.

This was an exciting, high stakes, fast paced urban fantasy witchy adventure with a spicy enemies with benefits romance. I loved the “treasure hunt” vibes, the puzzles & clues (although sometimes it felt like they were solved way too quickly and conveniently), the danger around every corner…
Yeah I had a good time. I found it easy to sink into, and there’s some great sarcastic/witty/if sometimes cheesy banter which people will either like or dislike but I thought it helped break up some of those serious, tense moments so I definitely enjoyed it.

3.5-4⭐️
