Part of the Seduced by the Game anthology. Prequel to NHL Scorpions series.
Keith Lambert is the captain of the Flyers—until he’s not. To everyone’s shock, he’s traded to the San Diego Scorpions. As if that’s not bad enough, Phoebe, his girlfriend of two years, decides she doesn’t love him enough to follow.
All alone in a new town, Keith is drawn to Kelly, his take out delivery girl. When she shows up at ice girl tryouts, he’s lost. She’s all he can see. Can he convince her to forget her past and take a chance on him or is he destined to be alone in a new town a little bit longer?
ABOUT ME I am a simple country girl from South Jersey who took my love of reading and shifted it into a love of writing. I am an avid hockey fan (Go Flyers!), which prompted me to start my writing with hockey romance stories. I now write erotic romance as well, and maybe something a bit different than both of those genres in the not-so-distant future. When not at work as a full-charge bookkeeper in Philadelphia, I'm at home writing, reading or simply spending time with my husband of over twenty years. Both my husband and I love animals immensely, which is evident in my writing. Even my badass characters have pets. Heck, one has a bunny! If there is any advice I would impart upon you, it is this: Follow your dreams. Always. Don't let anyone tell you it's foolish or unattainable. You have but one life to live—live it!
WTF?! Why does anyone think I would want to read about the hero having sex with two different women other than the heroine? I get they were not together, although for the second one they had met. But seriously, you use up loads of print for sex with OW. Why? And for one of them to be a VIRGIN!?!?! Using him to pop her cherry?! Just pardon me while I vomit! Who thinks this is romance?
Honestly, I hate it and it sucked. Therefore my rating is crap. The story about the MCs was ok. Would have been better without the ex coming back.

Good start to this series. But what went down with Pip didn't fit into this story at all!!! What was the point??
UPDATE to review
I reached out to Ms. Worrell with my question regarding Pip. She quickly responded and provided better insight on Keith and Pip's time together. I really appreciated this!!!!
This book's theme was new to me. I've never read a hockey romance and I have it admit, it was really good! I liked how the author added an index for hockey terms so that readers new to hockey terms weren't confused throughout the novel and I feel like I learnt something new. I loved the main character, Keith. He was sweet and tough, two great qualities. And I liked the ice girl, Kelly. She was mysterious and enjoyable to read about.
Keith Lambert is the hockey captain of the Flyers and he has a girlfriend, Phoebe, he absolutely love and adores. He thinks his life is complete and perfect, until everything changes within a day. Now, he's no longer captain of the Flyers, he's been traded to the San Diego Scorpions. Not only that, but his girlfriend, who he thought he loved and loved him, doesn't want to make the move with him. She doesn't really love him after all.
Keith struggles being alone in a new town, until he meets Kelly, the take out delivery girl. Thinking he won't see her again he's shocked when he sees her on the rink for ice girl tryouts. He think it's fate, but Kelly isn't feeling the same way. Having being burnt in the past by guys she cared about, she's scared of a relationship.
Can Keith convince her that she should take a chance with him? That they are meant to be?
I recommend this book to everyone. A great hockey romance!
This was a sweet quick read. I find novellas hard to review without giving too much away
Keith is a hockey superstar who's life changes when he gets traded.
Kelly is the perfect girl for him. She doesn't buy into all the hype around the superstar.
These two are so good for each other. No matter what anyone else says or thinks about them, they only have eyes for each other, and all the outside pressures and opinions (especially of her) be damned.
I loved that they work through all the problems they face together, and even when people from their pasts try to tear them apart they stay strong.
Thank you Nikki for gifting a copy of this novella for an honest review
This read was somewhat hard to follow for me at times. Though it is a good read it didn't have the feelings of warm and fuzzy all over. I felt for the characters Keith and Kelly the heartache of Kelly and the reserve of having feelings right off the bat for Keith. I felt her hurt and could understand it but at the same time it was a bit too much. Keith on the other hand was sexy and awesome in his own right he stood up for Kelly right off the bat and I thought that was just sweet as pie.
The sex was rather tame for me but romantic at the same time.
I have to agree with other reviewers on this one. I knew going in this was a prequel or novella, so it would be short. As with a lot of novellas it was a little rushed. I wish we could have had more of a build up between Keith and Kelly. Also the part with Pip, I didn't really see where that fit into the story. Maybe we will see her in another story down the line.
That being said, it was a pretty good introduction to the other characters in the series. I've put the next two books on my TBR.
I'm a big fan of Nikki Worrell and this book definitely did not disappoint. It was refreshing to read about an athlete that was neither a manwhore or tool.
It's a strong start to her NHL Scorpions series. I'm looking forward to it!
very good start to a series. I've never read anything by Nikki Worrell before but after reading this I will. I know it was an anthology novella but I wish it would've been just a little longer to get a further look at Keith & Kelly.
I think the Hero had more sex with other women in this book than with the heroine. I cringed a little when the story opens with him with his current girlfriend. The scene could have faded to black but I was ok because it set-up the break up. But the next girl - I hope the author is setting her up to come back later as a plot device, because that scene was totally unnecessary to the plot. I thought it would have been better devoted to exploring the H/h more.
DNF. I was looking forward to starting another series but this just fell flat. I think the writing was just too straight. Just stating everything rather than creativity. Same with the characterisation. They just immediately like each other but “oh no, I can’t be with you, I’m not ready for a relationship” woes from the h. Who then pretty much immediately runs off her entire life story about being in the foster system, abusive ex, and putting herself through school while working heaps of jobs. Whilst in a pool at a pool party… after that it was just bleh.
A good novella for the most part. Do wish it had been full length though. So there could of been more development in the relationship between Kelly and Keith. As it was all a bit rushed in the end. Plus I didn't get the bit with Pip at all, and would of enjoyed the story more if that part had been missing.
I love romance. I love hockey. So I had very high expectations when I saw this one as a freebie. So much so that I actually opened it up within minutes of downloading it so I could dive right in, instead of going to the next book in my queue, which I actually paid money for.
And the beginning did not disappoint. I skipped over the hockey definitions in the front, because I didn't need them. But I did think it was a good tactic to include them, because I'm thinking a large portion of readers will find them helpful. The game play scenes are written well, and I can envision the moves being described as if I'm actually watching them executed on the ice. The author clearly knows something about hockey.
Which is why my inner hockey geek was so dismayed when things spiraled downward from there. I really don't like when reality and fiction mix to extremes in any book, but this was more than that. First off, she matched two real life teams in the Stanley Cup finals who have not met there, then she had a team win it all that never has in their modern day incarnation. Then, she added a completely made up team to the NHL and made me want to scream.
There are already three real NHL teams in California. Why make up a fourth?
Okay, okay, maybe this is a book that takes place in a alternate dimension, or sometime in the near future. But why act like the made up team has been around for years and that they are a real contender? How about making an expansion team and setting them in Las Vegas (which has actually been rumored)? Then write a series about them building their team from the ground up, establishing a fan base, and finding love during the off-season.
I know I'm splitting hairs and 99 percent of readers don't really give a hoot about hockey, but I do. And this is my honest opinion on why I didn't get into this book like I should have. Like I wanted to.
Couple that with a steamy scene where bit player Pip utters probably the worst dirty talk ever. It made me snort, but she was being totally serious.
Though this book was primarily in Keith's head, there would be moments where insight about other characters would randomly be spilled. We found out that Kelly doesn't trust people who don't like animals. And we learn a sentence or two about Vlad simply because Keith is talking to him. On the phone. Not about Vlad's personal life, but rather about going out with the guys.
Amid all my issues with it, a decent story was hidden underneath. And unlike some other books I've read, I wasn't praying for this one to be over. So that's why I was able to honestly give it a three.
But will I seek out the others and buy them? No, I won't be moving onward.
If getting traded from one coast to the other isn't bad enough, Keith's long term girlfriend Phoebe decides long-distance doesn't work for her. New team, new city, new start. Keith decides to let lose and party with some of his teammates and have some fun. While getting settled into his new apartment, he makes friends with the delivery girl Kelly. A die-hard Scorpions fan, Kelly is weary of becoming a puckbunny especially because she's an ice girl. Determined to show Kelly that he is more than a typical hockey 'player' (see what I did there) Keith slowly wins Kelly over.
I read this in the 'Seduced by the Game' anthology since I was drawn into the hockey world by 'The Enforcer', but I think I might read this as a stand-alone novella again to see whether or not the Pip situation gets a bit more explanation.
Overall, I enjoyed it, it was a quick read and explanation into Keith and Kelly's relationship, and an introduction to characters we get to meet in the first official book. The only thing that really stumped me was Pip, because she was just in and out and no mention was made of her at all later.
Other than that, it's hockey! Of course it was cool.
I'm giving this a 3 Star rating for the fact that even for a novella it was to short. I was looking forward to reading Keith's story after just finishing Jody/Lacey's. I really wanted more and just felt let down. I would have like to have seen a little more development of Keith and Kelly.
