When we first meet Warren he is a struggling single dad to 10 year old girl after losing his wife and just trying to keep it together with his business, raising his daughter and life in general. Once it is suggested that he look into a nanny to help out with his daughter and other things around the house he hops on posting an ad and in walks Harmoni.
Now she is just getting back to the town and staying with her mom after finding out that her trifling fiancé cheated on her just days before their wedding. She is looking for a fresh start and wanting to get her own seeking to get her own space. When she sees the ad posted for a live in nanny she applies for the position. What we come to find out is that Harmoni and Warren have history as friends and more. While he is still grieving his wife, he can't help but feel the attraction to Harmoni now and debating how and he wants to move with her.
Harmoni was exactly who and what Warren needed at this point in his life and she was great with his daughter Cyera as well. I appreciated the way that she was a woman figure in Cyera's life and how she encouraged Warren to get professional help to discuss his feelings as well. I also liked how they had a conversation about their feelings for each other instead of her running or him acting like they were nonexistent.
Overall I thought this was a good small town, cowboy, and second chance romance. Harmoni and Warren were cute together and one might say they were destined to be together.
Warren and Harmoni are destined for each other in this second chance, hometown romance. After overcoming life's obstacles they find each other again, and fight it as they might, the chemistry and love is still there. I absolutely adore Harmoni's personality! Her warm, vibrant, and bubbly and balances out Warren's grumpy moodiness. This story has just the right amount of angst, drama, laughs, and heat, making for really sweet and heartwarming read. 🥰
The opening scene 🎬 drew me right in! I’m glad she left Jared with the quickness. Harm & War had a past and with each page turned it was clear they would have a future💙♥️
Consider this novella a second chance/friends-to-lovers romance all wrapped into one! War and Harmoni are high schools sweet hearts that broke up just before college. However, fate brings them back together where it all started.
War was literally at war with love, denying his true fillings for Harmoni and just being mean! In the end, War got the girl that he always loved even when they both pushed each other away.
This is a novella, so the story develops quick! However, the author did a great job creating a sufficient timeline for a book under 200 pages.
I do generally enjoy this author but this was just okay for me. There were parts of the book that gave me the ick, primarily the constant mention of the being hs sweethearts coupled with the flashback, albeit brief, of their first time first time. And to follow that up with the next time they are intimate they keep saying I missed this?! Over ten years and you’re telling me it was hitting the same… enough to remember? Just the thought, again icky. If it was college or grad school I can understand but specifically choosing a time period where they are teenagers and comparing it to experiences as adults was weird to me. I also don’t recall the mention of how Jared knew where she was, but I will definitely check again. I feel like there was a slow build up in the beginning and then right at bam 15 pages left and we’re proposing forever and twinkies after being emotionally unavailable as of 2 days ago. (Yes I know it’s fiction blah blah blah but damn 😭)
I'm still getting used to Mya and her writing style. There's something unique about At War with Love because the author is building a new world with new characters in Cade's Cove, a fictitious small country town in Texas. There are lots of characters introduced, there's significant character development, but based on the story, I'm not sure that the main characters, Harmoni and Warren, were the best characters to launch this new world with, but what do I know? Really. Also, if Mya sees this: . The story is engaging and I enjoyed escaping to Cade's Cove with Harmoni and Warren. I'm excited to read more of Mya's books in Cade's Cove, too, since the small town romance trope is my jam. I recommend At War with Love to anyone who likes small town or second chance romances and to fans of Mya's books.
Final rating: 3.5 stars
Spice rating: 3 stars - There aren't many spicy scenes, but the ones in the book are descriptive and work to advance the story in a good way.
Content warnings: Moderate: Cursing, Death, Infidelity, Sexual content, and Grief Minor: Bullying, Violence, Toxic friendship, and Abandonment
This story wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. It is a novella, and because it was so short, I was hoping that would have been edited better than it was. Also, the storyline had good potential, but something about the execution of it didn't wow me, and the flow was off. Harmoni and Warren are a second chance couple who found their way back after loss and betrayal. He needed a nanny and she needed a job, it was supposed to be simple until a kiss, a short night gown and an apology that turned into "adult fellowship" and boom, we've got an instant family. It went from slowly burning to queue Jagged Edge and Let's Get Married. There were some cute moments, several really funny moments and then some sweet ones too. But still, the epilouge was my favorite part of this book.
Grief is like walking through a dark tunnel trying to get to the light. Warren was stuck in that space until he realized he needed clinical assistance. With Harmoni by his side and in his ear, he was able to climb a mountain that he longed to conquer. I know that Warren married someone else, but Harmoni was always his rib, the left one, to be exact. That left rib is right under his heart. Harmoni is the mother figure that Cyera yearned for in her life. Warren and Cyera did Harmoni a solid, too, because she needed stability in her life. Her ex cheating ways turned her every way but loose. That paying gig that Harmoni seeked turned into a lifetime of joy and happiness.
This was a quick but magnificent read. You will love the country setting and living. So grab your copy today.
Warren and Harmoni were high school sweethearts who ended things because Harmoni didn't want to live in a small town for the rest of her life. They come in contact again when Harmoni returns home after ending a bad engagement, and Warren hires her as a nanny for his daughter, Cyera. Harmoni entered Warren and Cyera's lives just when they needed her. I loved how Harmoni helped Warren realize that he needed help to overcome the grief he had for his deceased wife. I also loved the bond that Harmoni and Cyera formed. Warren and Harmoni were made for each other and helped to make the other one better. This is an emotional small town romance/second chance book that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Second chance romance is a captivating genre that explores the depth of love and personal growth. In this particular story, Maya skillfully crafted a narrative about Harmoni and Warren, two individuals who experienced life's challenges separately before reuniting. Their journey demonstrates the transformative power of time, self-discovery, and emotional maturity. By allowing the characters to develop individually, the story highlights how personal experiences can shape and strengthen a romantic relationship. Harmoni and Warren's reunion represents a more profound, nuanced love born from their individual growth and shared history, showcasing the beauty of rekindling a connection with greater wisdom and understanding.
This was a short fast paced small town, second chance, nanny/single dad romance. I liked that Harmoni brought life back to Warren & pushed him to healing from the loss of his wife. It was a slow build up with them rebuilding their friendship and then after a couple of crash outs and a night of passion they’re suddenly in love again and ready to build forever. It was like 0-100 at that point and it left my head spinning. While it’s a short book and I know you can only do so much with limited pages, something felt lacking to me. And it may have just been for how quickly they got back together. I don’t feel like they processed together their time apart and maybe their fears about reconnecting, since that was a plot point as well, them both essentially being afraid.
I loved this light romance!! Warren and Harmoni were the perfect 2nd chance love story, even with them trying to fight the pull of love. This book had little turns and in reality might have stopped their chances. But, the had a real village behind them that didn’t allow them to get in their own way. Each had that moment in the book where they acknowledged the nay sayers, but each stood in the truth of their love. And, to know Warren really kept his promise of trying to keep her stuffed like a Twinkie at the end was just the chef’s kiss to the story!! Excellent Ms. Mya!!
Harmoni, returning back home after she chooses herself and does not go through with her wedding, needs a job. She becomes the nanny for her ex, Warren who is a widower that is still grieving his wife, all while trying to be a father. Feelings begin to surface and Warren is conflicted, he isn’t sure if he should act on his feelings and rekindle what used to be. Harmoni’s feelings has resurfaced but she too, isn’t sure of what to do. This was a cute, second chance at love story of two individuals who are hesitant to open their heart to a possibility of love again.
I loved this second chance romance. Harmoni returns home after finding out her fiancée cheated at his bachelor party. She applies for a nanny position unbeknownst to her it is for her first love Warren. The chemistry is instant between these two, but Warren has a hard time leaning into it. Warren is grieving his wife and feels guilty for having feelings towards Harmoni.
I loved Harmoni's relationship with Warren's daughter. She stepped in and made a connection with her. The way she took care of her was as if she was her own.
Reading Warren and Harmoni act on their feelings was chefs kiss. The spice was hot, and you could feel that connection off the pages. I was so happy they figured everything out and ended up together. I was scared Harmoni was gonna run off, but she stayed and rekindled her first love. Warren didn't play about Harmoni. He beat her ex up, and I was here for it. Another amazing book by Mya.
This was amazing!! Just when you think things are falling apart they’re really falling into place! Harmoni got betrayed by the man she was supposed to marry which caused her to move back home, the very place she ran from years ago. Running into an ex was expected but what she needed. Them meeting back up was fate and it allowed both of them to face fears they’ve chosen to ignore. I loved how despite the past and current obstacles they were able to work through it and grow together!
I've read from this author several times. However, this story reads like a first-time writer trying to get her barrens. It just didn't resonate with me.
Now, there were parts of Harmonie's and Warren's story that I liked, but the whole thing needed work. I know it was described as a novella, but this storyline felt very rushed.
I'm looking forward the development of other characters in this small town.
This was a cute second chance novella. I liked how Harmoni was with Warren and Cyera. She brought a light into their lives in the wake of their grief and helped them heal. I also liked the moments shared between Harmoni and Warren and that her light and optimism helped him to see what he needed to do to be better for himself and his daughter.
This was a such a cute & sweet read! Firstly, the first two pages gave me CRAZY whiplash! I was not expecting that! Talk about starting with a bang. I love how Harmoni stood ten toes on her choices whether they were the best or not. I’m happy Warren was able to face and work past his issues. I love a good nanny & single dad trope so this was definitely my type of time!
I loved Harmoni and Warren’s love story. The way she came back into his life and forced him to explore his feelings and seek help was the best thing she could have done for him and the way she came in and nurtured Cyera when she needed a mother’s love the most was outstanding. Great story.
A great read! Getting back to your first love, that was the type of fate Harmoni and Warren had going on. Harmoni and Warren had to deal with different losses, grief is something that happens at one's own pace. The family and friendships were important to both! I enjoyed the epilogue as well!
Harmoni was so unserious, but serious lol Such a lighthearted novella. Idk wth Jared was thinking, but stupid idiots will be stupid idiots. Warren was a man that needed help and Harmoni was the friend and woman that put the mirror in his face and made him deal with his life. Beautifully written and funny.
Short, well written book who introduces us to Warren, a single father who’s struggling to raise a daughter after his wife’s death. On the suggestion of her school, he puts an ad in for a nanny. The nanny turns out to be his high school sweetheart who turns out to be the best thing for him and his daughter.
Harmoni and Warren must decide if its worth is to cross the line of no return with one another after their paths cross again. Warren is unsure about love after loss while Haromi is on a journey to rebuild after dealing with infidelity in her last relationship.
Mya does her thing with crafting this second chance romance as Haromi and Warren go one a journey to see if it is worth giving love a chance for them.
This is my second book by this author and she definitely has my attention!
Harmoni & Warren. The back & forth got on my nerves! At first you wouldn’t have known they use to be lovers cause of the way he talked about his late wife. To think, what would have happened had doe the long distance but everything happens for a reason. I loved Cyera!!! Warren can “talk to me” ANYTIME!!!!
I couldn’t get enough of Warren and Harmoni! I loved them so much. The way they find themselves back together after both of them facing loss was just so beautifully written. I wanted more of their story at the end!
I finished this book in one day!! I loved how she was able to navigate her feelings and work through it without tearing anyone down. Also how vibrant and passionate she was! Great read!!!!!
I'm a sucker for a second chance romance and was not disappointed. Harmoni and Warren both went through some things to find their way back to each other. Through love and loss, Harmoni came in and healed both Warren and his daughter Cyera leading to the perfect HEA.
