Can a bond forged in raw, animalistic heat survive if it evolves into something more?
Adair
Chasing me through the woods is one thing. But now I’m sharing a house — and a bed — with a bossy a-hole who can’t stand me. He’s dominant, he’s derisive — and I crave his rough touch like nothing else. Once I see the softness beneath this bearded bully’s gruff exterior, I have to admit to myself: I’m in big trouble.
Because the odds are stacked against me. The idea that this surly sadist wants anything deeper than a tryst is laughable; the close proximity we’re forced into is bound to tame the feral magnetism that draws us together. And that’s before I make a fateful decision that threatens to trample the fragile trust growing between us.
Jack
I am still not a nice guy. So how the hell did I wind up with this bright-eyed bunny under my roof and under my skin? I know it was technically my doing, but I didn’t really have a choice; I couldn’t just literally leave him out in the cold.
His scatterbrained sunniness grates on my nerves, and the way he keeps me at arm’s length is infuriating. Still, my urge to protect and possess him only intensifies as time goes on. When a chance encounter forces a reckoning with my painful past, the hard shell I’ve built to protect my heart begins to splinter. I start to wonder: Can predator and prey ever find lasting happiness together?
About Rabbit Hole Rabbit Hole is not a standalone. It is a follow-up to the novella Jack Rabbit, which should be read first. This is a dual first-person POV, high-heat MM romance novel with forced proximity, a 12-year age gap and an HEA.
This book is appropriate for ages 18+. It contains adult content and material some readers might find upsetting or objectionable. Themes include primal play and kink. Detailed content information is available on the author’s social media accounts.
Holy Crap. That was very hot The kink was 10/10 - loved this even more than book one.
Jack + Adair have some INSANE chemistry. The smut in this is truly sooooo good. Watching their relationship grow and learning to trust each other was beautiful. So many elements to this one, I could NOT put it down!

3.5 stars. How does one rate a book that you mostly enjoyed, but also were very frustrated, and a little disgusted by?
We pick up where we left off with the last one - with Addy moving into Jack's house because he has nowhere else to go. This skews the power dynamics massively, in an already deeply uneven state of affairs, and made for some uncomfortable reading. For the first two-thirds of the book, I found Jack to be an absolute asshole. To the point where it felt abusive. He was cold, uncaring of Addy's feelings, uncommunicative and dismissive. Sure, they are having lots of really hot, kinky sex, but for most of this book Addy is walking on eggshells, he tiptoes around Jack's feelings and accepts absolute breadcrumbs as proof of Jack's feelings for him. I was livid for a lot of this read. And sure, Jack does "take care" of Addy by doing super dad things for him, but it really did feel paternalistic and patronising. Addy had almost no agency for the longest time.
Then, speaking of the sex - just because something gets your dick hard does not make that something okay. So much of the smut in this book is hardcore degradation, and though I do think the author did a good job of writing about the tension between Addy's disgust and his horniness, there were still some things that happened that I found to be just really awful and unsafe. Coupled with Addy's extreme inexperience and poor knowledge of his limits, it was almost unreadable in parts. Okay, yes, he has a safeword, but time and time again he just seems to be so out of his depth. But a killer orgasm forgives everything, right? I don't know, it just didn't sit well with me, and I was not actually rooting for them.
Things kind of take a turn in the last third of the book, when Jack seems to suddenly realise that Addy is actually a person with his own whole inner world, and not just his dream sub that will take any amount of abuse and pain he dishes out.
So yes, I enjoyed the book in that I was very entertained by it, but I actually kind of hated Jack very much. I do think he was abusive, and I found that using Addy's newfound degradation kink to excuse all this bad behaviour was kind of gross. Their whole vibe was a bit toxic. In any case, I think Em Jae Black is definitely an author to watch.
Adair and Jack shouldn’t work, but holy hell, they do. They were literally made for each other.
The push and pull between them is addicting. Adair trying to resist...Jack dragging him down into the dirt anyway.
The tension, the heat, the way Jack’s cruelty twists into care when Adair least expects it…glorious. They’re brutal and tender all at once, and that red hot connection made me obsessed. I couldn’t look away, couldn’t stop feeling every single shift between them.
This gave me everything I crave in a dark romance: obsession, ownership, and tenderness hidden in the filth. By the end, I was wrecked and desperate for even more.
Rabbit Hole is the second int he Dark Trails series, following the story of Jack and Adair. Book one was superb and book two has not disappointed at all.
Jack is a true sadist. He is dark, depraved, twisted and his ultimate weapon is humiliation and degradation. He’s been alone for a long time after being betrayed and disowned by those important to me. He is mean, grumpy and difficult to like.
Adair is young, naive but knows what he wants. He knows what turns him on, even if he doesn’t understand why he likes it.
Jack may be a true sadist, but Adair can take everything he offers. He is a masochist enjoys the humiliation & degradation. These two are perfect together. Their dynamic is strained, just because neither is good with communication, but their kinky times are 🔥. Especially the dungeon scene!
Read your trigger warnings, it’s all in book two but if you’re okay with the tw give this book a read. I’m disappointed that the book is finished and I want more of Jack and his stupid bunny.
3.5 I wanted to rate it 4⭐ but my hatred toward Adair just won't let me. I couldn't stand him, even more in this sequel. The way that bitch irritated me is beyond... And all I wanted was to enjoy Jack's dirty as fuck ideas how to degrade him. I mean, seriously... That man is so disgusting and hot AF at the same time. The only reason I finished it is because I wanted to see all the nasty things his brain decided to do to Addy.
This book took me longer than usual to finish but I absolutely ADORE Jack and Addy!! It was nice to read about these two again in a relationship setting. This book is straight up FIFLTH. But I also really enjoyed the sweet little moments of these two. This was a perfect continuation of book one and even HOTTER 🥵
This book got me out of a deep book slum. Definitely check the triggers on this one. With that being said, I thought it was excellent. If you love some dirty and I mean dirty chases in the deep woods, then this is for you. This has so much spice to keep you going and guessing damn what's next, and when you think it can't get more dirty and depraved, trust me, it does. And in all the right ways. I promise Jake and his bunny will keep you deeply entertained....
To say I’m obsessed with this duet would be the understatement of the year. After binging a stack of ARCs, I was craving something different—and Jack Rabbit absolutely delivered. 🐇🔥
So many kinks and tropes that are not my usual rodeo… but guess what? I had the best time ever. 👀 I devoured Jack Rabbit in a single sitting and then immediately dove headfirst into Rabbit Hole. Even with work kicking my ass this week, whenever I could sit down and read, I could. not. stop.
From the very first encounter, the chemistry between Addy (aka Bunny 🐰) and Jack was explosive. The primal play, the degradation, the raw intensity—it was written so well that I was hooked (and maybe blushing 👀). But then? The softer moments hit just as hard. Bunny pulling Jack’s tender side out from under that rugged exterior? Jack caring for his Bunny in ways that melted me completely? 🫠 Perfection.
What I really loved was how they balanced each other out—seeing through the masks, pushing each other to grow, and becoming the best versions of themselves. The push and pull between dark, rough scenes and tender, heart-squeezing moments made these books so addictive.
Bottom line: these books are hot as hell 🔥 but also emotional in all the best ways. If you’re looking for something darker with a softer edge (and don’t mind a little—or a lot—of spice 🌶️), I highly recommend falling down this Rabbit Hole.
Picks up right where book 1 left off, quite literally, so I’m glad I read back to back. I do wish there was a bit more negotiation and communication about the kinks, but there is a safeword and aftercare, at least. The kinks are a bit more intense and kinda gives The Sleeping Beauty trilogy vibes where is more focused on the SM side.
This book was so hot. After reading Jack Rabbit I had to know how it's going for Adairs and Jacks story. This book was so much fun to read. Be aware of the triggers but I deeply recommend this book.
Listen, this was not a sweet and easy romance. It was sweet, you know, if you're a little twisted in the head like me but it was far from easy. And I loved it.
Adair and Jack we're a hot mess and I do mean hot. My Kindle was on fire y'all! Old faithful ain't got nothing on this book! And while there was a lot of smut and it was very kinky, there was also a story here. Granted that story was how do these two very different people get together but I love slow moving stories like that. A slow burn with high heat, that's my kink.
Full disclosure, as much as I love this, I did get a little frustrated with these two here and there because if they had just spoken honest with each other, a lot of things could have been avoided. I don't think it's a case of miscommunication, so much as these two don't know how to communicate because Adair is young and Jack is very damaged. They did have a bit of an honesty issue and saying what they really mean but I wouldn't say anything was done with malice, even on Jack's part. An @sshole with a heart of gold if you will.
The only issue I have with this, and it's got very little to do with the story itself, is the dark romance subtitle. Listen, babies who have been around here for a hot minute no I am no stranger to mm dark romance so I think I have a little bit of authority when I say what part of this was dark? No one díed, nobody's house was burnt down by the love interest, nobody was chased and then beat with an inch of their life by the love interest, and they never threatened each other's lives and well-beings once. MM dark romance doesn't always go that hard but this wasn't even in the realm. Some primal play in the woods and a grump does not a dark romance make, that's all I'm saying.
But even with that nitpick (seriously, does anyone know why this is called a dark romance because I'm truly baffled) I still loved this. If you don't like Jack, you're going to have a really hard time with this because he is an alphahole to the max his love and care for Adair is undeniable. Yes it's intense and very kinky, but there's also moments of levity and sweetness. It worked for me and I love it. Five stars because I truly can't wait to see what else is author comes up with. I'm officially a fan.
🔥🔥Rabbit Hole // Dark Trails Book 2 // Em Jae Black 🔥🔥
This one is for my hardcore shminky shminky humiliation, primal loving bbs! It’s not for everyone but if it’s for you… it’s about to be a new favorite! I know it is for me. Skyrocketed to my top 3, y’all! Shmink THIS GOOD is Rare!!
So to my shminkiest of bbs, READ THIS NOW! Thank me later 🥵🥵🥵
Alright first and foremost, the spice takes the lead in this book. Jack and Adair are a SHMINKY pair made in shminky heaven. But don’t get me wrong, the author still delivers some fabulous lost in love vibes! Both of these men are absolutely hopeless at relationships but they eventually figure it out because they are just made for eachother! Jack is a bossy A hole through and through and Addy can be lost and insecure, but they work hard to love and support eachother in their own wild ways!
Rabbit Hole is the second part of Jack and Addy’s story. Part 1, Jack Rabbit, is an equally high heat novella, that must be read first.

OMG!! This book was so dark and so freaking good. I literally couldn't put it down at all.
Jack and his Bunny.. whew. Let me tell you what. 🥵🥵🥵🥵 The chemistry between those two was 🔥🔥🔥.
The emotional rollercoaster they both had to go through about broke my heart. I wanted to reach into the book and hug them both tightly.
Jack was so possessive and I loved it so much. He was pitch black black. I mean he was absolutely dark in the things he liked, but his Bunny .. well Jack definitely met his match with Addy. Addy was so much darker even if he didn't think it was okay at first.
It took Jack to help bring out what Addy truly wanted and needed for him to let go and accept the fact that he was pitch black black black black. 😂
The things Addy liked and wanted some were even a bit too much for me, but I couldn’t pry the book from my eyes. They needed to know what was going to happen.
This is definitely worth your time, but read Jack Rabbit first as this book is the sequel to the first.
Welp, I don’t know how to explain that I enjoyed this duet other than I really enjoyed it. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book with this level of degradation, since it’s not my usual jam. But man, I was sucked right in. This book is super spicy, with lots of kink, so def check the triggers before you jump in. Beyond the kink, there was a level of sweetness? Idk if that’s the right word, but ima use it. Adair and Jack are two peas in a pod. Both have poor communication skills, which was frustrating, but they complement each other well. I wouldn’t call Jack a softy, not even a secret softy, but he cares for Adair and always makes sure he’s comfortable before and after they do anything. He’s supportive, caring, and very protective. Adair is sweet and trusting, and needs a bit of a confidence boost. There is a plot throughout the spice, so it’s not all saucy. Well it is, but still, plot. It was nice to see the character development and how their relationship grew. Both with each other and Sarah. This was a fun read for sure. Not a light fluffy romance at all, but it isn’t a murder death ugly dark romance. It’s just super crazy kinky.
I am a person who enjoys dark kinks. Because of that I have read , watched, and experienced many things related to that topic, so this is not unfamiliar to me. I can absolutely honestly say this is the hottest book. I have read in my entire life so far! OMG! I don't even have the words to describe to you how exceptionally exciting this read is. With every new scene I felt like I was on the edge of exploding and I was telling myself that this is the limit, it can't get any steamier than that. Gosh, I was wrong every time! The scenes are filthy, degrading, embarrassing and so amazingly overtaking your mind. There is so much creativity, situations you haven't seen in other books, but also you get fully sank in the feelings and thoughts of Jack and Adair, you get to know exactly how the mechanism of their excitement works.
And, of course, them two are such amazing characters, so incredible chemistry, so funny, so fond of each other. In other words, it will be very difficult for another book to top this one any time soon.
Rabbit Hole carries on from the prequel novella Jack Rabbit. It follows Adair and Jack as they navigate living together after Adair ended up homeless at the end of the last book.
Jack is still a bossy a**hole who was burnt by his previous partner, and Adair is still the bright-eyed, scatterbrained, and (not so) innocent bunny. The two seemingly opposites complement each other perfectly as Jack craves someone who will submit to him, and Adair is quickly discovering how much he loves being dominated and all the filthy degradation Jack can offer him.
There's not a lot of plot, just enough to keep it interesting, but the story mainly revolves around their super kinky relationship, and Jack pushing Adair's limits further and further. We do see the two learning to communicate better, and Jack's character growing, but the main event for me was the spice. And oh, how deliciously kinky it was!
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this. It was the perfect follow-up to Jack Rabbit.

OMG 🥵 the scenes in this were 🤌💋 A beautiful combination of love and kink. So. Much. Kink. Two people who didn't know what they needed and definitely didn't think they'd find what they were looking for, found each other and everything they ever wanted. 😍 The bossy a-hole made him a bookshelf for his special edition books 🥺 Their fight and make up was top tier; I normally hate the miscommunication trope, but this felt authentic.
Favorite Quote: "There was something strangely comforting in the thought that he was willing— that he wanted— to go with me down the dark, depraved rabbit holes that scratch my itch and fulfill my desires."
What a fabulous f*cling book this is!!! It was such an excellent continuation of Jack and Adairs story - and also hella hot. Like, holy dang.
This story picks up where we left off with Adair moving into Jacks place, both of them trying to navigate their new situation - some slight miscommunication leads to a few problems but they pull their heads outta their butts and figure it out!
The spice is off the charts! The way Jack loves to degrade and humiliate Adair is perfectly matched with how much Adair wants Jack to hurt him and their chemistry is explosive.
Cannot recommend this book more - as long as you aren’t afraid of a bit of darkness 🥵
For such a kinky and depraved story, it was also kind of sweet.
It took a while, but Jack and Adair finally learned how to communicate. Jack's definitely not the easiest person to speak to, and he's jaded because of his past relationship, so he unsuccessfully tried to remain indifferent to his Bunny.
Once they started to understand and see each other better, their relationship was cute. Even with all the kinks. 🤭
“I want to possess you — I want to make you mine. I want to take care of you, protect you and keep you safe. I want to break you, make you fall apart and then put you back together. I want all of your laughter, your tears, your screams.”
Starts off pretty dark with plenty of violence, heavy on the degradation, debasement, humiliation, impact play, and primal play. It does get sweeter towards the end. This is a D/s, S&M and MM relationship.
I was not expecting this book to delve as deeply as it did, and it was an unexpected surprise. The characters were intricate and possessed vulnerabilities. You’ll need to read “Jack Rabbit” before reading this book. While this book may not give you the warm & fuzzies, because of how physically volatile they are, there is a sense of satisfaction to their relationship. At the end, in spite of the violence there is a sigh of contentment, a definite “awww” moment.
*fans self* I feel like I need to bathe in holy water. Oh. My. Kinky. Goodness. Jack Rabbit was a book that I didn’t think could be improved upon but Rabbit Hole just knocked it out of the way for 1st place. This is a book with the most back breaking smut, sweet little moments, and every time Jack said something nice I squealed and kicked my legs.
I really feel like this book has it all. The softer more vulnerable moments, the quite frankly cheek blushingly why-do-I-like-this spicier moments. Well-written smut is quite hard to find, but Em Jae writes it so effortlessly. This has honestly exceeded my expectations and hopes. This author is one to watch!!!
Thank you Em Jae for letting me beta read this masterpiece, and for sending me the finished product ARC as well. This review is entirely my own. ❤️
Wow! 5/5 ⭐️ — I knew I would love Jack and Adair’s story after reading their novella. Their relationship starts off with a bang and evolves into a tender and emotional story. Both characters grow and learn to freely accept love and support while giving themselves over to their depraved desires.
Jack has so much love to give and shows it through his actions as opposed to words when he doesn’t know how to handle it. Adair is timid and unsure of how to handle the kind actions without knowing the emotions behind them. But they both grow and feed off of each other for support as they navigate their relationship!
It’s incredibly spicy and so sweet at the same time! I absolutely loved it! I recommend if you’re into humiliation and degradation because it is on point!
Sooooo many yummy kinks in this book. Extremely high steam. I'm very satisfied with the romantic aspects in this sequel, this time around. Along with the degradation and humiliation of Addy, I also felt Jack's love for him so I was so into their dynamic.
Great read! Though I low-key wish Addy was less bratty and more submissive, i.e no questioning and instead just completely giving himself to Jack and his wishes, especially since we know Addy wanted/liked whatever Jack dished out to him. But that's probably a thought for another book.
OMG, could the story of Jack and Bunny get any hotter? This is serious degradation/humiliation + primal play at it's finest. Both totally get off on it and we also see a softer side to Jack and a tough as old boots brattiness and stand up for what he believes he should do Bunny. I just loved these two and their adventures and how they figured out their relationship. Amazing. Nothing short of brilliant. Well done. Em Jae Black has joined the list of authors I will pursue for more. I can't wait to read more.
This book is FILTHY but oh so good. Read the trigger warnings for an idea of what you’re in for, then strap in for the hottest, dirtiest and somehow also sweetest book Em Jae has written so far. Adair and Jack are so good together. I didn’t want this book to end but also the ending was so satisfying. Loved it.
🌶️🌶️🌶️🔥🔥 Adair and Jack! Wow! Adair has an amazing heart full of love and Jack is broken needing to be fixed and to have some one to trust. What better way then to have a man like Adair. This was a great love story of two people who didn’t know how to express there feelings. One liked to hurt and bring pleasure out and the other just wanted to have some to love them. Great ending to a story!
Jack is a grumpy park ranger and Addy is an 'in a rut' graphic designer. The two of them bring out the worst in each other, until it turns to their best. They were meant for each other.
