Erica Schultz is an American comic book writer, letterer, and editor. She is the first woman to write a Spawn comic, and is best known for her writing work at Marvel on titles like Daredevil, X-23, and Hallows' Eve.
Muse is back, and he's got Daredevil in his sights - but not the one he was expecting! Elektra faces off against the serial killing psycho in a battle that sends her to Hell and back, quite literally. And when faced with the sins of her past, will she embrace them, or turn away?
After the last Red Band book I read and the last Erica Schultz book I read, I didn't have high hopes for this. But I was pleasantly surprised. I liked Muse as a villain the first time around, and he's just as sick and twisted here, praying on a poor artist to drag himself back up into the human world to cause more havoc. Elektra's a good foil for him, and the gauntlet he puts her through feels familiar without retreading story beats she's been through before. Even the final resolution with regards to what happens to Muse's victim is unexpected.
Oh, and any book with a Ghost Rider in it is always alright with me.
The artwork is a split between Valentina Pinti and José Soares, who seem to double-team everything rather than taking any particular storyline for themselves. They're a good team, with similar strengths, so it becomes a cohesive whole rather than a tale of two halves. This was another thing I was dreading when I opened the book, seeing three artists across five issues (Sergio Davila pencils a few pages of #5), but again, a nice surprise. I will say that, aside from the first issue where Muse does some gross murder stuff, I didn't really feel like this was pushing the envelope that much in terms of the Red Band title, however. That's two for two I've read where it's kind of just...there.
Surprisingly solid, entertaining, and gave us a terrible, awful, no good, wonderful Helektra pun. Nicely done.
Daredevil: Unleash Hell is a breezy Daredevil story that feels like a team-up comic from the 1990s, for better and worse.
Elektra, taking over the horns for Matt Murdock, faces off against the art-obsessed serial killer Muse, who has taken a young artist named Morgan as a protégé. Muse pulls Elektra into hell, where the villain and Morgan are even more powerful, and Elektra must fend them off while resisting the temptation to join with Helektra, an entity who will augment her strength at the cost of manifesting her worst impulses. Thus Elektra has battles both existential and physical. Oh, and Ghost Rider is also there to help in the fight and save the souls of the innocents involved. That's where the team-up comes in.
I mostly enjoyed Erica Schultz's script; it's clear she has a solid grasp of Elektra's character, and she balances the expository and fight scenes well, so the story never gets too bogged down. I almost wish this five-issue collection were expanded by another issue or two to spend more time with Ghost Rider, a character about which I know little, and whose involvement in the story as-is seems perfunctory.
And while I'm not terribly familiar with Muse either, apart from his appearances in the mainline Daredevil by Chip Zdarsky and in the Disney+ Born Again, I think I've had about enough. He's not a compelling foe, with a gimmick that is of a piece with an edgy sort of early-90s Batman villain. I understand not every Daredevil story can pit Hornhead against Bullseye and Kingpin, but surely there's another option who can put whomever's wearing the cowl through their paces while not grating on me.
Having said all that, I'd gladly pick up another Elektra book of Schultz's. If you vibe with the character, Unleash Hell is worth a look.
Not super bad, just kinda plain. Muse is basically back from the dead, and Elektra tries to bring him to justice. Elektra isn’t blind like Matt though, so it kinda takes the suspense out of Muse being a ‘sensory void’ here. It also tackles some themes of redemption, making up for past mistakes, etc., which was fine. Ghost Rider makes an appearance too, which is kinda cool.
Overall, it’s just kinda mid to fine, though imo. If you particularly like Elektra as a character, then you might get some mileage out of it, I would guess.
I really like Elektra as Daredevil. Cool to see Muse back too because he’s definitely one of the best of the newer created villains. Good story that honestly could have been fleshed out more and maybe should have been a 8-10 issue mini series. My only gripe has more to do with the “Red Band” label. Like it’s there for explicit content yet the bad words still look like #%*$&. Why?!?!? Blood and gore… cool. Naughty words… still bad.
Seems like a recipe for a banger story with Elektra, ghost rider, and the return of Muse. It’s fun but lacks a kind of deep character emotion in the characters. Marvel needs to develop Elektra further as daredevil if they keep doing mini series with her or bring her mainly into the main daredevil ongoing when it comes back.
A grim and twisted serial killer story concerned with art and identity. After recently watching the Elektra movie, it's great to have a reminder of who the character actually is. Love the cover variants, too!
I mean, it was fine. Love how the “EXTREME RED BAND” publication just means it’s got more blood than your average comic but they still censor swears and such.
It felt like it had some interesting ideas but was really rushed.
I pray every day Elektra and Laura will be freed from the tyranny of Erica Schultz’ writing. I hope to hell and back Elektra DD gets a new Schultz-free ongoing soon.
