The book was so fluffy and cute !! I loved the MMC so much the way he loved the FMC and would do anything for her !! I loved how he was so supportive and gentle with her. His interaction with his friends was so funny. I loved that the MMC was jokester body guard rather than the usual total grump. The FMC was so wholesome I loved her so much too she was hard on the outside but softie on the inside. I loved seeing her come out of her shell a lot!!!
Overall this book is a good quick fluffy read and perfect as a pallet cleanser 🩷

Squealing!!!! This novella was absolutely delightful. I've loved a lot of couples written by this author, but there is something that feels extra special to me about Malachi and Aspen. Their story fully embodies that to be loved is to be seen. I loved seeing the characters grow throughout the story and become their most authentic selves. The demisexual and disability rep was also fantastic. I was so happy to be back in this world and continuing with the mystery that began in the first story. I'm pumped for this series to continue! As always, a huge thank you to the author for allowing me to read and review early :)

This was an incredible follow up to Storm & Sacrifce.
Malachi who is always becoming someone else and trying to fit in so he can be accepted, while Aspen tries as hard as she can to hide back and be out of the way.
Both Malachi and Aspen have their difficulties and qualities that make them interesting characters. They each bring something different to the table with their experiences. The world building is expanded to give the reader more information about the world and it's done in a way that one isn't overloaded or bored.
The banter, the emotion, the writing, and the jokes make this a fun and interesting read.

This was a fairly good read. I loved the mystery with the witch. I knew who it was off the bat, but I tried to gaslight myself into thinking I was wrong lol. I had a hard time warming up to Aspen, but I started to really like her during the last 75 pages or so. I can’t wait to see where the next book takes us!

I love love love this novella! Once again Laura Winter has done it. I thoroughly enjoyed Storm and Sacrifice but this one hit differently in such a way I was giggling the whole time. You have two sweet cinnamon rolls—who honestly both are in desperate need of therapy— come together in one of the most wholesome romances there is. With of course a bit of mystery on the side as they hunt down a witch.
Now I will be honest that a major part of why I loved this novella so much is because of how personal it felt to me. Reading is supposed to touch the soul and make readers feel and relate and if a story can do that for me instant 5 stars, and there has never been a character I relate to more than Aspen. One of the things that makes Laura Winter one of my favorite authors is how she’s not afraid to go outside the tropes and represent the diversity of people in this world. Aspen sums that up perfectly with her disability, sexuality, and mental health which are all themes and concepts that need to be addressed more in fantasy.
Now I will never claim I know what it’s like to be disabled, I can never relate to the pain Aspen went through but I related to her in terms of her thoughts and self image issues were a lot similar to myself and my own struggle with mental health. This was especially true when it came to sexuality. Like Aspen I am also demisexual and my struggle with being on the ace spectrum and defining myself was not easy so seeing a character go through the things I did/am going through made me so happy and felt a little less alone. So thank you Laura.
Now I can’t skip over the cinnamon roll MC, Malachi. I love your typical shadow daddy but sometimes I need a golden retriever in my life. Malachi is the standard people you want to know what to look for in a relationship look at him. The bare minimum people! He admits it, basically respect and care is the bare minimum and he goes above and beyond. His development in learning how to be patient with Aspen, his care, and his unconditional love just made me so happy.
Now if you excuse me I’m going to go throw this book at my boyfriend and tell him this is a guide to what I expect for our relationship.

Guard & Guise ticked all my boxes for a satisfying, funny, sexy, cozy read! That's a lot of things, you might say, but then I would say, "Yeah, I expect a lot out of books, and this gave it to me!"
First of all, Malachi (my love!) is an absolute treat. He was an easy favorite from Storm & Sacrifice with his snark and piercings, and he really shines on these pages. Malachi is a charming jokester with a heart of gold and just enough bottled-up sorrow that I want to wrap him up in a blanket and tell him everything will be all right to which he would say he knows it, make a dick joke, and get on with his day making everyone else around him feel amazing.
Aspen is the perfect foil throughout this story, closed off and seemingly cold until her walls are lovingly knocked down. I found her character devastatingly relatable and such a delight to watch flourish as the story went on. She's easy to root for and just headstrong enough to be frustrating in the best ways. The two of them together is a delight and extremely steamy!
Top all of this off with a mystery that will keep you guessing until the very end, and you really can't ask for more. The setting is to die for (almost literally haha), so cozy and alluring, perfect for a winter read but also any other time of year when you just want to cuddle up and follow two people (well, fae!) who want, need, and deserve love.
Also, I may have only read a few mentions of Sir Whiskers, but if anything happened to him, I would slay everyone and then myself!

-The plot itself was quite intriguing with the mystery, the spying and infiltration to find out who sabotaged something. I liked following the characters who try to overcome being fated mates and focus on their mission. I also like the world with the libraries and the different hierarchy. Although, around halfway through the book, the plot line was heavily overshadowed by the romance and the spice. It’s not that I disliked the romance but it just felt like they pushed everything to the side to focus on the romance.
-I like the characters. It sometimes felt like they didn’t really have their own personality as individuals but together they were cute enough. It was interesting to see Aspen’s self discovery journey especially when it came to intimacy, we don’t often get that in books. But it then felt like all of that was thrown out the window after she and Malachi hooked up.
-The ending was disappointing. Similar to the book in general, since the two got together, the storyline was very overshadowed and the ending wasn’t an exception. They hooked up and then the people they were looking for revealed themselves accidentally and that was that. I wish that there were more clues or more of something before we got the reveal.

Malachi is a f**king delight. I love reading his word-vomit thoughts and the fact that he can only behave for four minutes, max. His friendships are so fun (he and Oz have some especially great banter and interpersonal play), and the fact that he extended that friendship to Aspen first before enhancing it to a romantic level was great.
Aspen is definitely his opposite in terms of personality. She's very somber because she's been put down most of her life, but it was nice to watch her come out of her shell for Malachi and see that extend to others by the end. Also, I'm sensing a theme in these works with twist origin reveals, and I dig that.
Overall, the story had a really solid plot, a good romantic buildup, some excellent spice, and so many fun lines. I think my only critique is that the characters obviously knew the ins and outs of magic way better than I did, based on what was explained, so some of their leaps in logic went over my head, but it wasn't a big deal.
And on a side note, I really hope Oz has to deal with a demon in his basement in the future, because you can't tease that and NOT use it (especially when he and Malachi are apparently so terrified of this basement, but we still don't know what it looks like, so I HAVE to know).

This was the sequel I wanted! I was initially hesitant about paring Malachi with someone like Aspen. I’m not typically one for the player/innocent matching but Laura showed me how wrong I was. We continue the over all story from the first book, trying to find out more about the curse and rituals. Our MCs Aspen and Malachi are paired together to hunt for answers in a huge library.
Aspen suffers from both chronic pain due to life long injuries, and, is demi-sexual. I truly believe that both of these things are handled with great care and the Author explains things very well in the content warnings sections.
Malachi seems delightfully sunny and flirty but he also harbors his own demons.
Through out the story you really fall in love with Malachi and Aspen as a couple and see how good they are for each other. Malachi gives Aspen a safe space and unconditional love while Aspen gives Malachi a place to be his true self.
The mystery deepens as new players enter the game and decisions need to be made. I will be reading the next one, I can’t wait to get more info on Hella and see who her mate is!

Malachi is our sunshine MMC lead who is obsessed with reading and facts. He meets his mate, Aspen, an Apprentice turned Activist and proceeds to make the worst first impression in the history of mankind (I'm talking, flee the country and take on a new name bad). The story follows Malachi and Aspen as they are tasked with identified who in the library could have cursed the old King.
I adored the disabled-rep with Aspen in this book and how Lauren showcases the difficulties of being a chronic pain sufferer. Malachi adores her despite her difficulties accepting herself and it was heartwarming seeing her open up to him and acknowledge her pain as the story continued. I can't stinking wait for Hella's story.

Flirty guard Malachi and icy Archivist Aspen are tasked with an important mission: unearth the enemy who acted alongside Azemar to carry out murderous rituals. The catch? Keeping her secret that he is NOT her Apprentice and keeping his secret that she is his everything.
Guys guuuuuuuuuuys. Laura Winter just is slaying it with this series. I love these two mains…Malachi is absolutely yummy: both bookish AND extroverted? Yes please, gimme. But honestly, my heart aches for Aspen, to soothe her. Her pain, her upbringing, her suspicion of others…they all just want me to hold her and help carry the weight of her worry. Malachi stepped into that role on the page and it was so beautiful. I love the way he loved her: wholly and without hesitation…even when he couldn’t (iykyk). And the absolute giddiness he has for her. Celebrating her, while not losing himself. I just loved them so much. While this story definitely had an engaging storyline, I saw this as a really stunning love story, where the author honored that precious coming together of two souls.
Format: eARC, but my preordered copy arrived a touch early and I am so glad I get to feature it on this post!

This is 200 pages of sweet and spicy perfection!! The way the author creates such complex characters with a full storyline and plot in so few pages is truly incredible! I adored Malachi’s golden retriever energy compared to Aspen’s closed off demeanor and LOVED that despite her physical and emotional limitations, their romance was still one of adoration, beauty, and hot spice! I also really enjoyed the emphasis on the idea that all love is unconditional.
This book contains dual 1st person POV and tropes include:
- disability rep
- queer rep
- banter
- mates, but only he knows
- enemies (sort of) to reluctant friends to lovers
- finding the accomplice(s) to the ritual sacrifices in book 1
I enjoyed every minute of this story and the beautiful love story between the characters. I hope everyone reads this gem of a book!

Such a great follow up to this series!
Book 2 follows Malachi and Aspen as they’re both given the task of helping to uncover more from the plot of book 1 from the new king and queen (we love seeing Sera and Kaelen)! However, Malachi quickly discovers that Aspen is his mate while she remains in the dark.
The character development for each of them is amazing and so touching, but what I loved even more was the uncovering of their mate bond and how down bad Malachi is for Aspen in the sweetest way. Cue him calling her sweetheart and her trying to keep count of it ❤️.
I thought the author did a great job with disability representation and awareness throughout this story! There is also queer representation as well. The underlying message of not changing yourself to fit in anywhere was so heartwarming as well!

Another fast read with a well developed plot! Can’t wait for book 3!

Okay so book 1 was great! Book 2 was..... Absolutely fantastic. Malachi has just raised the bar and he's intelligent and likes books (Aspen was getting the full package, if you know what I mean 😉).
Book 2 continues from the events of book 1 (secret rituals),. So if you haven't already, read that first.
Aspen and Malachis first meeting did not go very well but now they are stuck working together on official business for Kaelan And Sera (king and queen).
I love Malachi and Aspen together, his patience and willingness to adapt for his mate no questions asked. Aspen is fiercely intelligent and together they both are able to be themselves.
I also love the drama with Seras wings and seeing Malachis relationships with Oz and Kaelan.

I loved the inclusivity in this short story, it depicts how life can be for people of all paths. I cannot wait to read book 3 in this series! 📖

🌶️: RCRS 6 (open door scenes)
I must admit: I sat on this review for a little while because I wanted to make sure what I said here was just right. However, I’m still not sure if I can really sum up my reading experience and do this story justice. But let me try…
The minute I finished this book, I wanted to flip it over and start it again from the beginning because I already know that there is going to be even more depth on the second go around. Aspen is so impeccably fleshed out that I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that she is based on a real person. Her anxieties, her pain, her anger and her hesitancy to open herself to the possibility of love is so relatable it almost hurt to read. Malachi is the perfect counterbalance in a lot of ways but what I loved most about him is how unassumingly patient he was with Aspen on her journey. He consistently met her where she was, gave her reassurance but never put pressure on her.
I also really enjoyed reading Aspen’s experience with chronic pain as it offered insight into an ailment that I have little exposure to. Her capacity to literally just get out of bed in the morning is a testament to her strength and character.
Long story short: this is a wonderful quick read with a beautiful love story at its core. It can be enjoyed for the sweet romance on its surface but also enjoyed for the depth of characters and highly relevant but painful topics of ableism, sexuality and illness.

I am absolutely squealing at this book!! I loved the first book, and this one is even better!!
The fact that these are so short and fit in so much actual plot and tension is amazing! This book has it all. Many varieties of representation, interesting plot, swoon-worthy MMC, strong independent crush-worthy FMC, magic, politics, spice, and the most swoon-worthy MMC. Yes, I needed to say that twice. A considerate, funny, book nerdy, dirty talking book boyfriend might be my new favorite.
I desperately need Hella's story right now.

fantastic romance
This book is so sweet & spicy with a fantastic subplot continuing on from book one plus a brand new romance. You will fall in loveeee with Malachi and Aspen—two nerds with trauma to work through and love to discover. Omg I love them so much. Worth mentioning: Laura Winter writes disability and queer character rep masterfully, and I cannot commend her enough for the way she weaves realism into her fantasy worlds. She’s an auto buy author for me!

Winter knocks it out of the park again with disability representation. Everyone's experience is unique, but I'd bet that feeling of having to prove your unseen pain is real is true across the spectrum. Seeing a character not only struggle with that isolating pressure but also become loved, physically and emotionally, is a treasure. Now off to commission two giant portraits of Aofe and Aspen for my inspiration wall.

Truthfully I kind of found Malachi annoying but I loved Aspens character. I am a sucker for a character that has to overcome both mental and physical obstacles. Makes them more relatable and real to me because the author wrote them as not conventionally perfect. No one is this perfect specimen and I hate when books are written about FMC that their only obstacle is insecurity.

The pages are filled, with Fae, magic, witches, conflict, love and explicit sex scenes. I liked the storyline and characters, and enjoyed the book throughout. I received an ARC copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was such a fun, easy romantasy that I devoured while stuck in bed sick. It literally made me feel better! The cute banter, the witchy mystery, the romance - loved it!

Malachi is a golden retriever in the best way-I just want to give him the biggest hug. If you're having a bad day, Malachi is the friend you want to have. He will make you laugh until you forget your problems and hide the body. Aspen is such a beautifully written character. Winter did an amazing job of showing Aspen's strength, even when she thought she didn't have any, and growth in such a short amount of pages.
This novella is such great representation of "invisible" disabilities. The biggest message from this story is you deserve care and love, even if your pain can't be seen from a visible injury. As Malachi would say, it's the bare minimum.

i ADORE THEM. i would go to war for either of these people but thats the thing!!! they dont need me too!!
i ADORED how gentle malachi was with aspen, and how he NEVER EVER crossed a boundary (come on, he’s a giant puppy dog!!!)
and the rep in this book felt NATURAL. i just love laura’s work, seriously
