Instead of saving the day, Stone McGracen got murdered by a spider, and now his knife won't shut up.
Stone McGracen died attempting to be a hero… again. Dinos rule the sky as Stone claws his way to freedom from the depths of a bronze-ranked version of the dungeon. Outside, Jackson is in a race against time to reunite the party, Marie copes with the fallout of the fight with Valencia, and Gretchen finds herself outed as a nonhuman. Follow the party as they take back what's theirs with grit, spit, and blood in Sol Anchor Book 2!
About the Series: Sol Anchor is a table-top-inspired LitRPG saga with a healthy mix of humor, magic, and mystery with a big dollop of fantasy combat on top! Follow Stone as he navigates levels, loot, skills, dungeons, and everything that makes GameLit so awesome. Sink your teeth into something a bit out of the norm in Sol Anchor!
This was the second instalment of Benjamin Darr’s Sol Anchor LitRPG. It is an OK LItRPG series that mixes action and comedy to solid effect. Truth is the comedy is pretty funny but the action is a tad dull.
This second outing had our lead, Stone McGracen, levelling up in another Dungeon run. This time he had to survive against dinosaur style monsters all while trying to woo back Ae, who was ignoring him after an argument! Outside of the Dungeon things were getting even more complicated for Jackson, Gretchen, Marie, and Rochelle. Jackson’s family blamed Stone and Rochelle for Jackson’s death facing the Spider Queen which lead to Rochelle being arrested upon her respawn. Gretchen was outed as a non human and enslaved more publicly. While Marie had some side effects of her own to deal with after surviving the battle against the spider Queen but only after becoming infected by her!
It should have been fun but most the action with Stone in the Dungeon was dreadfully dull and felt like it took up a significant portion of the book. The rest of the happenings were a bit more interesting but nothing spectacular.
My interest waned from time to time while listening to this one and it felt like it took more of an effort to get through some parts of the tale than it should have been. This was still an OK read, and I like some elements of the story, but I think I might bow out of this series and move on to potentially more engaging reads.
Rating: 3 stars. Nearly rated this 2.5 stars but I do like some of what we get in this series so I’ll lean towards the full 3 star rating.
Audio Note: This was narrated by Brad Derry. He gave an enthusiastic performance, and leaned into the humour, but I did not always totally gel with his character voices. His general narration was good.
I enjoyed reading this book very much and I recommend this book to anyone who likes LitRPG and progression type of books with lots of action and an apocalypse theme.
