Best friends, a crafty killer, and an ice-cold mystery…
When Leia Peterson discovers a forgotten box filled with childhood wishes, she knows exactly how to honor her late friend’s memory—by making one last wish come true. With her best friend, Kat, by her side (and their lucky tacky earrings for good measure), Leia trades her sensible Seattle life for a weekend at the Northern Magic Ice Festival, where a hotel carved entirely from ice promises the adventure of a lifetime.
But their whimsical winter getaway takes a sinister turn when the festival’s star—the legendary “Ice King”—vanishes during the signature sculpting competition. Between suspicious “accidents” and sabotaged sculptures, it’s clear someone’s determined to keep the remaining ice artists from claiming the prize.
Armed with nothing but their wits and their warmest winter boots, Kat and Leia find themselves tracking a killer through snowy landscapes and frozen corridors. Their suspect list is as slippery as ice, and each new clue leads them deeper into the hotel’s glittering maze. With the body count rising and time running out, these unlikely detectives are about to prove that best friends make the best crime-solving team.
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Angie Fox writes sweet, fun, action-packed mysteries. Her characters are clever and fearless, but in real life, Angie is afraid of basements, bees, and going up stairs when it is dark behind her. Let’s face it. Angie wouldn’t last five minutes in one of her books.
Angie is best known for her SOUTHERN SPIRITS™ mysteries, and for her ACCIDENTAL DEMON SLAYER books.
Death at the Ice Hotel by Angie Fox and KC Bailey Cozy mystery. 1st in the series. Leia Peterson finds a forgotten childhood lunchbox filled with wishes from her two best friends and herself. Impulsively opening one of the origami folded wishes, she interprets the wish to current day and arranges an adventure weekend at the Northern Magic Ice Festival and ice hotel. Together Leia and Kat travel to Duluth, MN to see the ice sculpture contest and spend a night in the ice hotel. When the festival main star disappears during the competition and accidents seem to be sabotage, Leia and Kat start asking questions that lead them deeper into the hotel’s glitteringly cold art rooms. Leila is a fact checker and math wiz while Kat is a cool-in-emergency trauma nurse. They have skills! But is that enough to keep them out of trouble?
Fun cozy that goes here and there and around the maze. Lots of questions, potential tools for harm and icy cold temperatures to be leery of. The clues are clever - I learned a lot. Plus a weirdo parrot on FaceTime. Definitely will be watching for the next cozy from this team.
Great mystery story. Totally kept me guessing until the end. Loving this collaboration between Angie Fox & KC Bailey. Can’t wait for the next in this series. Recommend to all
I've really enjoyed books from one of these authors in the past (I haven't read the other author before) but this one just didn't hit the mark for me.
It was fine - the characters were likeable enough, and the setting was interesting - but I just found myself struggling to get through it, which isn't like me.
I'd still like to read the next one, and see what mystery the characters find themselves caught up in then.
Leia Peterson wants to honor her late friend’s memory by fulfilling some of their childhood wishes. She convinces her long-time best friend Katherine to accompany her. The two women travel to Minnesota to enjoy a festival that includes staying in a hotel made from ice. However, Leia and Kat never expected to find themselves neck-deep in a mystery. Will they be able to solve the icy mystery before the end of their vacation? Or is it a case that is best left alone? I am used to reading books where the main characters are either in their 20’s or 30’s. Leia and Katherine are in either their late forties or early fifties. It is a nice change of pace to read a story where the characters are closer to my own age. I could relate a bit more with them. I like how both women wanted to honor their late friend’s memory by taking this journey. In the process, Leia and Katherine are re-connecting. DEATH AT THE ICE HOTEL is the first book in Angie Fox’s brand-new series, WANDERLUST MYSTERIES, with author KC BAILEY. This book is quite different from what I usually come to expect from Angie Fox. There is no romance whatsoever. For people expecting a romance, they might be disappointed. Personally, I did not mind. It did take me a while to get into the story. Also, I am unfamiliar with KC BAILEY and her works.
Let me start off too say that co-authors Angie Fox & K C Bailey. Not only have a hit on their hands here with "Death at the Ice Hotel". But this co-author is a beautiful cohesive partnership; that in my opinion just must continue.
Now with "Death at the Ice Hotel" my oh my non stop didn't want to put; the book down what so ever. Other than our main three yes I mean three female characters: Leia, Kat and Charley a extremely wise talking, phone calling parrot. The other characters hold a supportive yet intriguing role.
With Leia and Kat take a last minute trip to a Ice Hotel...burr. All in honor of a third friend Jen whom cannot be there. Opening a childhood lunchbox filled with lil origami hearts with wishes and dreams on them.
Yet as Leia and Kat start to mingle with this extremely, interesting guests. Along with it's artist a murder mystery appears. So many things are moving fast, even faster than the chainsaws at times. I'm so not let anything slip ,melt or drip .
Because you have to read this very first book of the series. I'm loving how it's turning out reminds me of Agatha Christie's: Death on Oriental Express , Death on Nile, etc.
I’m a huge fan of Angie Fox’s Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries, so I was thrilled to be offered a copy of the first book in her new series (written with KC Bailey), Death at the Ice Hotel.
I really enjoyed reading this book. The characters were immediately engaging, drawing me into the story right from the first page. I loved the back story of the three childhood friends, and how it motivated Kat and Leia’s trip to the ice hotel. I thought the contrast between their characters was well crafted, and enjoyed the way it helped them work together to find out what was going on.
The setting was great, and an unusual one. I thought the atmosphere came through really well, without any excessive description. The ice carving competition made an excellent background for the mystery, and I loved the fact that Leia and Kat have fun together too.
The mystery was an intriguing one, and I loved following along as Kat and Leia tried on various solutions until they found the correct one.
Overall, this was an excellent start to an engaging new series. I can’t wait to see what Leia and Kat get up to next.
I was given a copy of this book, my opinions are my own.
When one of a trio of lifelong friends suddenly dies, the remaining 2 decide to fulfill their childhood wishes. First up is to sleep in an igloo. They find a hotel that builds and decorates an ice hotel. Each room is decorated and sculpted by a different artist. It sounds like a dream come true, until someone dies. Can the pair figure out who the killer is before the weekend is over? I love all books by Angie Fox! Her Southern Ghost hunters series is fantastic and her characters are all memorable. This one is no different. Leia and Kat are two amazing friends and very fun to read! The supporting characters were all very unique and the whole idea of an ice hotel is so cool (to this native Texan anyway). I personally would love to visit, but I know I could not sleep there! Lol Then the drama unfolds slowly at first, then the pace picks up and builds to a very eventful conclusion. I enjoyed every minute of this mystery. Kat was determined to find the killer after one of the artists was crushed under her own masterpiece! As she finds out more and more information, the suspense builds. I highly recommend Death at the Ice Hotel! I give it 4 stars!
What an adorable quick read filled with mystery and friendship! I went into this book blind, knowing that I enjoy reading Angie Fox, so was pleasantly surprised by the whole book.
Leia & Kat have been friends since childhood and somewhat recently lost the third to their group. When a box of their childhood wishes shows up in a package from her parents, Leia decides to start “granting” these wishes as a spur of the moment decision. Kat is game for adventure and probably needs some relaxation time from her full time gig as an emergency nurse. These two pack up their bags and head out to stay in an ice hotel of all places.
What should be relatively simple enough ends up growing into a full blown murder mystery story with ice sculptures! There are some lovely side characters we meet, lots of ice sculpting drama, and many casual interrogations. The dynamic duo of Leia and Kat end up cracking the case, giving justice to the victims all while checking off a childhood wish in the process. This was a fun but still serious mystery that had me guessing all along the way. As the start of a new series, you’ve got me hooked!
The previous books by Angie Fox that I've read and loved were the Southern Ghost Hunter series, complete with ghosts and Lucy, a skunk. This is a more straightforward cozy mystery, but is no worse for that. Leia and her friend Kat decide to follow one of the wishes that they put in a box with their late friend as children in her memory. To this end they visit an Ice Hotel, where an ice sculpture competition is also taking place. They become involved when one of the team captains is missing. I really enjoyed this first book in the new series, ie would love to visit the hotel, although I would definitely wear my themselves. The descriptions of the ice sculptures sound amazing and I would love to see them in real life. The mystery part of the story kept me guessing all the way through to the end, with the clues being found and explained. I'm now really looking firsts to the next in the series, being set on the Queen Mary. I received an advance copy of this book from the author, however this did not influence my review of the book.
Death at the Ice Hotel by Angie Fox and KC Bailey is the first book in the Wanderlust series. Leia and Kat grew up together and are best friends. Leia’s mother sends her a lunchbox from her childhood filled with the girl’s wishes. Leia pulls one out and the besties embark on a chilly vacation. I find ice hotels fascinating, so I was eager to read this new cozy mystery series. I enjoyed the vivid descriptions of the ice sculptures, the hotel rooms, and the public rooms of the hotel. I liked the bedrooms with their varied themes (they were so detailed). I would like to look at the rooms, but I cannot imagine sleeping in one especially since there is no bathroom nearby or a door. The mystery was interesting, but it was a cinch to solve (it was so obvious). I kept hoping for a twist. The whodunit had a good wrap up at the end. There were repetitive details and lack of character development. I missed the humor that is normally present in Angie Fox’s stories. I kept hoping for an unexpected element (a ghost pops up or the friends discovered that they have magical abilities). We get a glimpse of the adventure the besties will go on next time at the end. Death at the Ice Hotel is a nippy mystery with frosty sculptures, a missing man, dangerous incidents, best friends, and wanderlust wishes.
I’ve enjoyed all of the Angie Fox series so I was excited about this new one co-written with another author. The overall story, plot, and setting were good but not great. It got a little confusing trying to keep all the characters straight. And there just seems to be something about books that are co-written where the flow is just not as smooth as it should be. The dialogue is clunky, and the mystery was easily figured out by the main characters, but based on a whole lot of speculation. The ending was kind of cheesy. I find it a little much when normal citizens feel that absolutely no one else will be able to solve the big crime or the big mystery but them, even at the risk of grave personal danger. Finding evidence and turning it over to police would be much more believable. Even so, I imagine I will continue with the series. A mystery aboard cruise ship is intriguing. Hopefully, they’ll work on character development and a more fluid writing style.
Ok Angie Fox fans, ready for a new murder solving duo? Let's travel to Minnesota to a ice sculpture competition with, you guessed it, murder. And not just a current one but an older one too We meet Leia and Katherine or Kat when Leia forgets. They've been friends since childhood and decide to have a adventure based on a tin filled with wishes. I enjoyed this book that kept me guessing until the end. The ice, countryside, ice hotel descriptions are so well written, I could see it all. I love these type of books. The only thing I can complain about is I wanted more back story on Leia, Katherine and Jen, the friend they lost and we briefly meet in chapter one. There is just peaks into who they are and I crave more. Maybe that's the point lol So bundle up and get ready for a great adventure. I can't wait for the next adventure they have.
Best friends adventuring on a girls trip to an ice hotel. What could go wrong? Everything could go wrong! Katherine is a trauma nurse who has traveled the world. Leia is a savant with numbers and puzzles and has stayed in one place raising a family. Both friends don't get to see each other much but they have the kind of relationship that just clicks when they are around each other.
Adventuring off to fulfill a childhood whimsical wish brings them to an ice hotel and ice sculpture carving competition that is overshadowed by past disasters. From there, Leia and Katherine get pulled into misadventure after misadventure and need to solve a past murder to get out alive. Lots of intrigue, quirky characters, as well as plot twists and turns that keep you guessing who did it until almost the end.
A great start to a new series for KC Bailey and Angie Fox.
A Very Chill Cozy Mystery Leia and Kat (Katherine) are fulfilling their childhood dream of staying in an Ice Cave. However it’s now a very upscale Ice Hotel in Minnesota. They will be arriving just in time to see the amazing ice sculptures being created for the competition. The other guests at the hotel were wonderful and kind but the sculptors were high-strung and on edge. Wonder what that is all about. Leia and Kat (“It’s Katherine now.”) find a crashed car, lots of blood, but no driver. Now … It’s a real mystery. I really enjoyed the relatable characters. The entire cast is well conceived and well written. I LIKED Kat and Leia. They made sense as friends. And they each have the knowledge and chops to be a believable investigators. This story, of course, had the twist at the end that was a surprise.
This is the first in a new cozy mystery series. Leia finds a wish box she and her best friends made during their childhood and decide to make one of the wishes come true in honor of one of her friends that passed. She and her best friend Kat go to Minnesota to stay in an ice hotel during the ice festival. They end up with more than just a fun adventure when one of the main contestants disappears and they learn about a death at a previous ice carving contest. Between the 2 of them they're out to solve what happened. The story was interesting and I like the main characters. The wish box makes me wonder what their next adventure will be. I look forward to reading the next book in this new series.
Angie Fox is an author on my automatic read list. I was so excited for this cozy mystery. The setting is at an ice hotel, a place that I would love to stay at. It’s definitely on my bucket list. Leia, Kat and Jen are childhood best friends. When Leia receives a box full of their childhood wishes, she and Kat embark on an adventure based on a wish they pull from the box in memory of Jen, who has since passed. A weekend fulfilling a childhood wish soon becomes a weekend of mystery, past and present. Using their own unique skills, together they try to solve the case. It kept me guessing and I’m excited to see where the next wish will lead them. Start of a great series!
This is a fun first installment of this new cozy mystery series featuring best friends Kat and Leia. They've booked a last-minute friends weekend at an ice sculpture competition, including one night in the ice hotel. They make some new friends along the way, and solve the disappearance of one of the competitors, but not without a narrow escape from danger.
I enjoyed this book, for the most part. It was clearly well researched, and an interesting setting for a mystery book. Hopefully, we'll find out more about their lost childhood friend. I was expecting more of a twist, and found the characters a bit too chaotic at times, but overall thought it was a good read. 3.5 stars
Who doesn't love a cozy mystery? Run and you won't be disappointed because Angie Fox has done it again!! Angie and KC Bailey have teamed up to bring us a new mystery series that left me craving more!!
After finding a magical tin of wishes from their childhood, we travel with Leia and her best friend Kat to the ice motel in Minnesota, where they stay during an ice festival! Bring in the excitement of getting to part in the festivites and add in solving a murder and you have a "cool" time coming!
I absolutely loved this book. I can't wait to see where Angie and KC take my new two favorite gals next!
Riveting! It was so hard to put this story down, I seriously lost sleep with this book lol I did question a part of it about the depth of the friendship between the two main characters, they were life-long best friends but yet they kept much information to themselves rather than immediately sharing with the other, that kinda confused me a little, but other than that, these two authors wrote beautifully and seamlessly together, and I was totally wrong on my guess of the killer lol I liked that! Had me scratching my head until the final reveal! I definitely recommend this to all mystery lovers! No ghosts or para fantasy in the story but Charley is a Hoot! lol
I have been reading the leading author for a quite a few years, so I was fine with reading a co-authored title. I jumped in and settled in to read. My first take is that isn’t really a cozy mystery, but it isn’t really a hard mystery either, just somewhere in between. I really enjoyed the plot, and I liked the characters. I do admit that I didn’t get to know any of the characters as much as I usually like in a book, but that will probably go away with the next title. And, I definitely would like to read the next one. It is a well-written, interesting, and engaging mystery, and I look forward to more. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
This was a fun story about a girls weekend gone wrong. Lei and Kat are childhood besties who decide to spend a girl’s weekend at the Northern Magic Ice Festival. Their trip down memory lane turns deadly when the star of the ice sculpting contest disappears. Lei and Kat decide to track him down. They encounter sabotage, a spooky ice hotel, and tension amongst the ice artists. There were a lot of interesting characters and I was kept guessing till the very end! A fun read and I learned a bit about the dynamics behind ice sculpting.
I love the idea of having adventures based on childhood wishes. That’s exactly what Leia and Katherine (Kat to Leia) do, to honor their late bestie Jen.
Their first adventure takes them to an ice hotel with a cutthroat/dangerous ice sculpting competition. The danger of ice sculpting enormous pieces is high and a competitor died previously when a sculpture collapsed on her.
This collaboration between Angie Fox and my new obsession KC Bailey kept me guessing until the end. I can’t wait to see what Leia and Kat get up to in future installments.
Death at the Ice Hotel written by Angie Fox and KC Bailey. This is the start of a great new series with some smart ladies who are good at figuring things out. They work as a team to search out the mystery and solve the puzzle. I’m sure we will be seeing lots more of Kat and Leia in the future as they set out on their next adventures. Can’t wait to see what Angie Fox and and KC Bailey dream up next!
First book in a new Mystery series about Best friends Leia & Kat who go on a mini vacation to stay in a hotel made from ice. They watch the artists taking part in the ice Sculpture competition & They find themselves mixed up in subsequent sabotage & murder & they work together as only best friends can to solve the mystery.
First in a new mystery series this book features a warm friendship and an ice cold killer. I really enjoyed visiting a place I’ll never go as I am not a fan of the cold. I enjoyed learning about ice sculpting. I really enjoyed the interactions between two old friends and the clever way they discover who done it. I look forward to more adventures with Kat and Leia.
I absolutely loved this book!! The story, characters, & setting were all complete perfection—An amazing start to this new series!! Was so sad that the story was ending, but I was SO happy to see that this series is continuing!!!! Will pre-order my copy of the next book as soon as it’s available!! Thanks to the authors for teaming up on this wonderful new series!!
A wonderful who done it by Angie Fox & KC Bailey. I loved reading this awesome book. The characters of Kat and Leia are so good. I can't wait to read book two. I loved that they were older and how they put everything together to solve a older Mystery and a new one. I highly recommend reading this awesome book...
I love everything by this author, so I was very excited to read this. It is a great start to what I believe will be another wonderful, adventure filled series. Once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down. Looking forward to reading about more adventures from these two lifelong friends.
I enjoyed reading about 2 lifelong friends going on an adventure together. Of course they didn't know they were going to find a mystery. The setting was great. I loved the main characters. The mystery kept me guessing.
The setting were so vivid and real I could almost feel the cold. The story flowed without snags, and characters' dialogues were believable. The mystery kept me in it’s grip and I couldn’t put the book down till the last word was read.
