The book is an alright read. It's written in a very broad manner which considering it's not a large book is understandable. There is very little coverage given to military campaigns and battles.
The book is much more political in nature dealing with such issues as habeas carpus, slavery, the in-fighting between various governors and political leaders, in particular, President Jefferson Davis. Some insight is provided into what sort of man Davis was, including his failings and limitations.
In conclusion, I really did not gain much by reading this. The author writes well but the topics and the degree he pursued them do not lend themselves to a particularly riveting title.
