But when I glance up, it’s not by the person I want it to be. Dale’s always busy doing something else. Really, I must have the most unromantic partner on the planet.
Or so I thought.
For Dale has prepared a Valentine’s Day surprise and I don’t need asking twice to follow the clues I’ve found. I find my way to the remote cottage he’s booked, gobsmacked as I respond to his written instruction to enter.
Romantic music fills the air, delicious aromas drift from the kitchen and rose petals have been scattered, leaving a trail which starts at the front door and takes me up to a candlelit bubble bath where a glass of champagne is waiting.
But as I peel off my clothes, a sense of unease creeps over me. I should have checked downstairs before I came up here. I don’t know if this surprise is really meant for me…
Maria Frankland has a dubious internet search history and a very worried mother-in-law. However, neither of these things can stop her writing gripping psychological thrillers in which you’ll never find a happy-ever-after.
Her novels are mostly set in Yorkshire where you’ll hear the accent through all her characters. These are people you could live next door to, or closer still… don’t say you haven’t been warned.
Maria’s novels are fast-paced, down to earth and realistic. You never know what’s around the corner…

I was looking for something with a seasonal vibe but didn’t want a full-on romance since I prefer romance as a subplot rather than the main focus. So when I came across this thriller, I thought, oh cool, this might be perfect.
There are a few trigger warnings to be aware of, and honestly, almost none of the characters are likable. But despite that, the story was incredibly engaging, and I definitely didn’t see any of those plot twists coming. Overall, a really compelling read—I’d absolutely recommend it!
This book carries on and on and on...there is so much repetitive information it got boring fast and jumping between characters made it hard to follow at times. This book could have been completed in half the pages if there wasn't so much repetitive and unnecessary information. Only finished it because I hate not finishing books.
I decided it was time to read a Valentine’s tale! The story of these poor characters will capture your interest. Maria has that knack, and I have read nearly, if not all, her books. I liked it until the reveal’s started coming. They were a bit over the top for me, and led to an ending I didn’t care for. But I’ll keep on reading her books. This was a rare miss for me.
Another compelling read by the talented Maria Frankland. The Valentine is told through multiple points of review, which adds to the intensity of this gripping tale. All the way through, I didn’t know who to trust, which kept me turning the pages to an ending I never expected. This is testament to Frankland’s exceptional storytelling. I can’t wait for her next book.
THE VALENTINE BY MARIA FRANKLAND 5 ✨ ✨ ✨ ✨ ✨s once again. HOLY COW!!! I've been looking forward to this book for a while and anything maria writes is amazing. And this book is just as amazing if not more. Straight off the bat I was hooked from the Prologue alone. Dove straight into chapter one and I could not stop reading. Bingeable, Page turner, creepy, suspenseful. I'm hoping my valentines this year will be anything but this book. Well done Maria on another brilliant book. I'm already looking forward to the next one
I loved the fast pacing, short chapters and the premise of this book! I was hooked up until about 60% and then it all felt very far fetched - I don’t think the book needed all the twists that were thrown into it towards the end. I wouldve rated this SO much higher if the plot only included the first couple of twists!
This was good until it wasn’t. Haha. I was really invested and rooting for the main character until things took a turn and made me not like her so much. Really dumb decisions by everyone all around.
I won this book in a competition the author ran on her IG page, and I’m so glad the algorithms put her on my radar!
The Valentine focuses on Tamara and her childhood sweetheart, Dale, who have been married for years.
The story starts with a pregnant Tamara, who has moved into a neighbourhood into her dream house with husband Dale.
However, what should be a celebratory time for them isn’t as Tamara has noticed that she is being watched. Not only does she have the feeling that she is being watched, but she also feels like she is being followed when she is out and about, which scares her even more. Tamara’s husband, Dale is unsympathetic though and thinks she is just being paranoid.
As Valentine’s Day approaches, Tamara receives loving instructions advising her to visit a remote cottage for her Valentine surprise weekend. As she does so, she excitingly enters the cottage, hears the bustle in the kitchen, her favourite music playing and looks forward to the night ahead.
It’s only when she slips upstairs to take a bath that an uneasy feeling creeps over her as she realises that her husband hasn’t called up to her or popped up to see her which is incredibly unusual.
What started off as excitement quickly turns into fear and dread as she wonders if this surprise weekend is really meant for her and who it is that arranged it?
As mentioned, this is a new author to me and so I’m really glad that I came across her and that I entered her NY competition - all her titles sounded of interest so I’m looking forward to reading more.
Whilst the build up was a little too slow for my liking, once I hit the suspense chapters about a 1/4 of the book in, I was hooked! There’s twist after twist, there’s writing which will have you feeling a tad sorry for the bad guy, but then there’s even more twists which will have you seething for several characters!
It’s also a sad story at the same time - one which had me really feeling for the main character. I did feel like the ending was cut short rather abruptly and would loved to have explored more in the final chapter, but overall this was a good read and I’ll definitely look out for more books from this author!
She did it again. Somewhere along the way, Maria quietly became one of my favorite authors and now I just have to accept that every time I open one of her books, I’m volunteering to be emotionally dragged through it. She has this infuriating talent for turning words into sentences into stories that don’t just exist — they pull you in whether you like it or not. I’m never just reading. I’m hovering. Lurking. Standing in the corner like a shadow over every character’s shoulder, watching their lives implode in real time.
And the worst part? There’s always a little piece of me in there. In every story. In every bad decision, every silence that screams, every moment where you want to yell, cry, throw something, or kick someone directly in the emotional shins. This book was no exception.
The same questions kept circling my brain like vultures: How far would you go to protect what you think you deserve? How well do you really know your neighbors? Your siblings? Your partner? Yourself? None of these questions are new — but somehow Maria asks them in a way that still gets under your skin. Again.
Was the outcome unexpected? Not really. And honestly? I don’t care. Because it’s not about shock value — it’s about the slow, creeping unraveling. Watching every secret crawl out into the open. Watching everyone lie, hide, justify, and self-destruct while pretending they’re doing the right thing. I was watching everyone. And I was right there with them.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — four I’m-watching-you stars.
This one’s for the non–Valentine’s Day believers. For the people who believe in the wrong kind of love. For those who’d rather spend the day snuggled on the couch with their emotional support book (or plant, or animal, or existential dread — whatever works). If you enjoy stories where shiny hearts don’t save anyone and love doesn’t fix a damn thing but instead ruins everything it touches… this is absolutely a must-read.
Tamara and Dale were high school sweethearts. They've been married for fifteen years and are trying for a baby. But Dale just can’t seem to stay faithful. After an affair with a coworker, Tamara makes him change jobs and they move house in an attempt to start fresh. Unfortunately, Dale soon appears to be getting far too close to the neighbour across the road. As if that wasn’t enough, Tamara becomes convinced someone is stalking her, but no one believes her. When she receives a note asking her to meet at a secluded cabin on Valentine’s Day, she assumes it’s Dale trying to make amends for everything he’s put her through. Only when she arrives, it’s not Dale waiting for her.
Not going to lie, I was a little disappointed with this one. It had its moments, some twists were predictable, others genuinely caught me off guard, but overall it just didn’t fully land for me. It felt like yet another story about a cheating husband who gets caught, makes big promises, and continues his behaviour while blaming his wife for “pushing him away.” Dale was insufferable, but Tamara wasn’t entirely blameless either. My main issue was pacing. It took far too long for anything truly “thrilling” to happen, and much of the story felt repetitive. By the time we finally reached the secluded cabin, the book was nearly over - and even then, very little actually unfolded there. The final twists came out of nowhere and did elevate the ending, which is the only reason I rated it higher than I originally planned.
Whoaaaa… what the heck did I just read?! My head is completely scrambled!!! 🤯
‘The Valentine’ focuses on a married couple, Tamara and Dale, who have been together since childhood. After multiple miscarriages, Tamara has finally fallen pregnant. They move into a new house for a fresh start… 🏡especially after Dale cheated on her again. 😒
Moving house and expecting a baby should be a happy, exciting time but Tamara starts to feel like she’s being watched… stalked… every single day. Dale thinks she’s just being paranoid. 😱
As Valentine’s Day approaches, the night before ends in an argument. When Tamara wakes up for work the next morning, Dale is gone. 🫣 In a terrible mood, she leaves him a note saying she’s going away for a few nights to rethink their marriage. 🤔
Later at work, Tamara receives a surprise card asking her to go to a remote cottage in the Yorkshire Dales for Valentine’s Day. She assumes Dale is trying to make up for everything… so off she goes. 🥰
What she never expected was for this Valentine’s surprise to turn into a complete nightmare… waiting for her inside that cottage… with a man she has never met before. 😬 Who is he? And why is he obsessed with her?! 😳
I picked this up last minute because it was nearly Valentine’s Day and WOW!! I was completely hooked and finished it in one sitting! ♥️ I never saw any of this coming. What a fantastic twisty thriller!! 😍
This is the second book I’ve read by Maria, and honestly… I was glued to it from start to finish. 📖👀
This one feels like the kind of book that quietly watches you from across the room before finally stepping forward and saying everything at once.
The Valentine by Maria Frankland took its time with me. The beginning unfolded slowly, almost cautiously, like it was setting the table for something it wasn’t quite ready to reveal yet. I found myself waiting, wondering, sensing there was more beneath the surface. And then… the ending arrived with twist after twist, pulling the rug out from under every quiet assumption it had carefully built. Suddenly, everything made sense in a way that only a well-planned psychological thriller can deliver.
It may have moved at a slower pace, but that ending made the journey worth it. The kind of ending that makes you sit still for a moment after the last page, replaying everything in your mind. Five stars, without hesitation. Not because it rushed me, but because it stayed with me.
Have you ever read a book where the ending completely changed how you felt about the beginning? 📖
Finished ✅ I promised Maria that I would read her book 📕 months ago 🫣but everything has been a little crazy 😝 just like this book 😳. Sisters, Ali and Tamara are very close due to their upbringing, which was difficult with their father’s adulterous behaviour. Tamara finds her life in a similar situation but is determined to stay with her husband, until a moment of a sliding doors decision takes her in a different direction. Getting close to each character with family members, neighbours, colleagues makes you understand where this storyline is heading. ........or so you thought. OH NO!! The ending caught me unawares. I wasn't expecting how everything unfolded, which made this book a definitely must read 😱. Brilliant book Maria. You have a twisted mind 🤣😁. Love 🥰 it 🤓
It's been a while since I've read a book with so many vile people in. I think about the best person in this whole book was Wayne! The plot was good and interesting and the chapters nice and short. I loved the mystery. But then it fell flat a bit and I can't put my finger on exactly what but the last hundred or so pages just felt crazy! The twists were great and I did not see where this went at all, I guess it was just not for me.
This one was a miss for me. The FMC came across as very whiny, and I just could not get past her choice to stay with her cheating husband — that’s an immediate no for me and it made it really hard to stay invested in her journey.
On top of that, I figured out the big reveal way too early, so there was no real tension or payoff. Once the mystery was gone, I found myself completely pulled out of the story.
This was our local book club’s BOTM, which is the only reason I pushed through and finished it — I switched to the audiobook to make it easier — but unfortunately that still didn’t improve the experience.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Valentine! This book is an edge-of-your-seat thriller that keeps you guessing until the very end. Maria's use of multiple perspectives adds a rich layer to the story, providing depth and making it more engaging and relatable.
Packed with twists and turns that constantly surprised me, the fast-paced plot ensured there was never a dull moment. It's one of those gripping reads that you just can't put down.
Maria's writing never ceases to amaze me. Her books are a testament to her incredible talent and storytelling prowess.
This was good. It started off slow and had slow moments in between. It had many twists some I saw some, and some I didn’t. The main character got on my nerves at time and thought she was woe as me a lot of the time. My favourite character was her sister Ali and wish she was in it more. Looking forward to reading more from Maria.
3 stars! I was very interested in this book, and the first 2 twists did shock me... but as it went along, it because more and more twisty, to the point it was just unrealistic and confusing. I completed the book and enjoyed reading it, but the storylines kind of blend together, making it hard to understand. It also didn't really have anything to do with valentines day 😭❤️
Twisty story not just about the love between husband and wife also sisters. There was plenty going on in this book and twists till the end. I wasn’t sure where it was going to go and kept me guessing and surprised! Thanks Maria for the copy!
So the writing isn't fantastic, but I do love the story and the gripping way it keeps me reading and wanting more. The main turnoff is the intense jealousy of the MC and one of the supporting characters.
I found the twists quite intriguing, as they should be. I will definitely be reading more books by Maria Frankland. They are so fun!
I quite literally hated every single person in this book. The story wasn’t awful, but my gosh the people were unbearable. Which made it almost impossible to get through it. I did call one part of the ending (honestly it doesn’t take a genius because it’s so obvious 🤣), but I was surprised by the final twist. Unfortunately it just made me hate everyone even more. So, there’s that. I gave it 2.5 stars, so rounded it to 3. That was mainly for the added twist.
2.5 on a good day. Part 1 felt basic, repetitive, and predictable. Part 2 got twisty in the way that a Freida McFadden book would - maybe one of her lesser works. The ending just wasn’t worth the struggle to finish this book. 😬
As this book progressed, it just got twistier & twistier. I couldn’t put it down. I picked a character I sided with and rooted for them, right up until the ending that’s filled with turns galore. I love everything from Maria Frankland & this might be my favorite so far!
