I'd have probably given this five stars but we are WAY too far into the series for nonsense like this level of cliffhanger that leaves so much unresolved. For shame.
This one started off pretty slow. It took about halfway through this book before things started to happen. The main draw of this book is the rift magic. It is very versatile. I like all the different ways the author found to make what seems like a simple magic power, very complex. I would have rated it a little higher but it also ended with a cliffhanger. Add that to the slow start and the rating is a little bit lower.
This was a solid continuation of the Rift Magus Reborn story, getting the series back on track after a side adventure in the last book, with the protagonist returning to steadily regaining his powers and turning around his fortunes within his new life.
The reason this book gets 3 stars instead of 4, despite being of similar quality to the previous books, is that the story is already showing signs of stagnation. This book really isn't offering much that is new to progress this story, there's not much evolution happening to the characters or plot (at least in a meaningful way), and the hook that has carried me through the series to this point is no longer as compelling as it once was as we have already had two books that relied heavily on it to engage the reader.
The easiest way to resolve this issue is for this series to focus more on engaging character development. Fleshing out the characters (including the protagonist) to make them feel more real and compelling, then working to develop the relationships in this story so that the reader could care deeply about more than just the central premise would get this series back on track to 4 and 5 star material once more.
A bit more depth in the world-building and with the story in general would not go amiss either. The fact that the city setting this story is taking place in doesn't actually get a name until this book goes a long way towards proving just how little set-up has been done to this point. It's not necessarily as big an issue as the character work, but it would be nice.
Overall, though, this wasn't a bad story by any means, and is even of a similar quality to the previous two books that I rated much higher. It's just not offering anything new yet to enrich the story, and three books into the series, it really should be doing so by now.
This book’s structure is such a breath to the other books I’ve read! In the sense that I can go along with the character on a day by day basis and experience it with them. Although, other reviewers have expressed disdain for the cliff hanger the author left, personally it wasn’t a cliff hanger rather a something to look forward to in the next book! This is the best book and series I’ve read in the LitRPG genre, period! Any who, great book and I shall be awaiting the next book patiently!
A Really fun story that is over before your ready to stop reading.
I so enjoyed the series. It's just done right. It's such fun reading, the pacing is perfect, the dialogue and the main character and supporting cast are likable and you want to root for them. It's not ultra special to other novels it's just written really well. It's written to be enjoyed, and read for the enjoyment of reading. Really recommend this series. It's a fun time.
I found the story progress way too slow and rather dull, i must say. Due to the MC's power level nothing seems to be a real threat and he just waltzes through the plot.
The first person story telling, especially of an op character like this, comes across as pompous. The MC often sounds like a braggart.
The brewery plot is rather childish. The MC would be outplayed at once in reality.
Good fantasy; magi tournament fighting. Straightforward plot, everything rather predictable, but entertaining nonetheless. Ending in a cliffhanger, unfortunately; not the best choice. Well, let's see what the next book will bring. Hopefully, something more than more of the same.
I'll let this review stand for the first three books, since I read them back-to-back. Overall pretty good, but not a 5. MC is "old guy in a young body" so not an insufferable teenage prodigy which would have ruined it for me. He is increasingly powerful as the books progress, and is clever enough to manage his risks somewhat so that they scale with his recovering competency and power.
At least one more to come, and likely a few more if I read this arc correctly. So far I'm down to continue, so we'll see if the pacing is maintained.
I’m really enjoying the series even though the books are a little in the short side. The cliffhanger endings aren’t my favorite but this book seems to be incomplete since it literally ends in the middle of a word. Hopefully this won’t impact the start of the next book with missing plot.
The MC is quite impressed with himself as a noble and rift magus in his former world. He’s making business deals, punishing enemies fatally as he levels his rift and other powers. However he meets those who have powers opposed to his in and outside the fighting arena. Stay tuned for the next installment.
Good entry. I was a little confused at where things were going with the book. I thought it was focusing on Thornwood but then I feel like the combat tournament stole the show. I wish the tournament had more time dedicated to it. The next books’s direction is set and it seems like it will be interesting.
I really enjoy reading a book with well thought out strategies written by an intelligent author. But this ending is a nail biter and I wish I could start the next book without having to wait. Grrr
Simply put. If you liked the first couple of books in this series, you'll like this one. Though, the ending of this one leaves a lot to be desired. If you don't like cliffhangers, then you might want to hold off for a bit.
This series is just fantastic. This is the third in the series and it just gets better and better. The world and magic system is interesting. The story is well written. The MC is strong and confident. The progression is fantastic. What more could you want!
Good book but way too short. Too much time was spent on the damsel in distress who was more or less irrelevant to the greater plot. It ended just as it actually got interesting.
And now we have powerful enemies. Hopefully, allies won't become sacrifices to embitter our Rift Magus. The tournaments were interesting, but boxing rings aren't really that exciting even with magic and weapons.
Holy shit, Batman. That mildly annoying “too loud” female voice went from irritating to straight-up unbearable once the singing started. I had to skip ahead a few minutes just to keep listening.
