Now a fallen hero, Nate swore no one would ever break through the impenetrable fortress he'd built around his heart.

But Nate had never counted on the sweet beauty of Hannah McBride. What was it about his injured brother's nurse that had Nate hungering for her healing touch? Even though her innocent heart was as transparent as a glass slipper, hadn't Nate learned there was no such thing as happily ever after?

Eileen Wilks’ first book, a Silhouette Desire published in 1996, hit the USA Today Bestseller List and was nominated for Romantic Times' Best First Short Contemporary award. Since then, her books have appeared consistently on national bestseller lists. With thirty two books in print and novellas in nine anthologies, she has been a finalist in the prestigious Rita Awards three times, as well as receiving several nominations from Romantic Times, including one for Career Achievement in Series Romantic Suspense.

Each book in her World of the Lupi series gains a larger audience. It was originally sold in the Romance section of bookstores, but more and more you will be able to find copies cross-shelved under Sci-Fi and Fantasy as the popularity of the series grows!

Eileen has lived in the West Texas town of Midland, TX for over 30 years--three years as a young teen, and the remaining years since she moved back here as an adult. When she first started writing over 10 years ago, it hit her like the first drink for an alcoholic . . . or the first kiss for Romeo and Juliet.

She came to writing romance in a roundabout way. Having read and loved science fiction for years, that’s where she first tried her hand when the writing bug bit. Somehow her stories always ended up having a strong romantic subplot, but she hadn’t read a romance since the early 80’s and didn’t think “those little books” were her kind of stories. But when a friend in her critique group began working on a romance novel, Wilks decided she needed to give the genre another try. She asked her friend to recommend some titles--and quicker than you can say “Jayne Ann Krentz,” she fell in love. The genre had been busy growing up while she wasn’t watching. These days, with romances comprising over 50% of the mass market books published in the U.S., there are romances to appeal to almost every taste--historicals, paranormals and contemporaries that range from romantic suspense to romantic comedy, from inspirational to sizzling.

Eileen covered a lot of territory before coming home to Midland, having lived in Canada and Venezuela as well as twelve U.S. cities in five states.

I enjoyed Midnight Children a lot. Hannah takes a job as a nurse aid at a ranch.
Hannah is also studying to get a full degree and needs the money since she gave away all her savings to her sister. So, yes she is kind and big hearted but that is not a by-word for push-over. Her new employer Nate is a little late in picking her up and is gruff and even a bit rude when he sees how she looks and tells her she doesn't have a job. You, see Hannah reminds him of his clingy psychotic ex-wife, this is initially of course.

Well, Hannah sets about caring for his gorgeous brother Mark and on an impulse even kisses Nate. Nate isn't used to trusting people, his father wasn't the best guy around and people think he's like him and on top of it he's a felon, he accidentally killed his wife's lover and ever since people treat him like a pariah, even though his manipulative ex was at fault. Faith in women is something he doesn't have and he wants to protect his brother as well even though they have crossed wires about the past(pertaining to his ex-wife).

Hannah sets Nate straight right off. She doesn't want a fling or his money, she is working on her degree even if she is attracted to him. She tried the marriage route as a teenager craving security(her father had wander-lust). But of course Hannah falls for Nate and accepts whatever he gives her, not that he treats her bad,, he cares for her and that scares him.

My problem with the book was at this point and affected my rating, yes Nate was deeply scarred but he did act selfish with Hannah even though he told her not to love him, beyond that I enjoyed the book.

More fun than I was expecting. Definitely the "I know what's going to happen" type of harlequin like book. But I liked the characters, and didn't want to hit any of them, which is a change for me and this type of book recently.

A fast read, about 2 hours...

The main characters were really developed and their actions and reactions fit very well in their characterization. Hannah ruled and Nate was the typical hard on the outside marshmallow on the inside kinda guy that simply had too many scars to want to let anyone inside.

The secondary characters left me wanting more. I was a little peeved however that Hannah and Nate had so little interaction with the rest of characters but this is pretty standard in romance novels, however the few that do pay attention to the world building around the main squeeze usually hit it bulls eye for me. I found Susie to be quite interesting, same as Earl and would have hoped for a little more dialogue between Earl and Nate. Mark was cute but a little simple, he got unwind too fast.

So, overall, plot included, writing style and all I really enjoyed it. The story hooked me because Hannah and Nate really made it worthwhile.

This is one of my favorite books. And I have read many, many, many romances. (Wish the author would write the younger brother's story!)

Sometimes it's good to read books with happy ending, the never ending dream of finding a prince in real life.

A surprisingly entertaining story. A well developed plot with a bit of suspense held my interest throughout the book. The cover seems a bit dated but the story most definitely was not.
