Laugh-out-loud funny and bursting with heart, Love on the Air is a deliciously escapist rom-com set in the dazzling world of commercial radio and celebrity musicians.

'Funny and fresh and feisty and fierce and simply fabulous. I couldn't put it down.' Kate Langbroek

A fun, fresh and charming office rom-com, set within the context of a breakfast radio gig, celebrity musicians and some fabulous holidays.

This is a wonderful debut novel from podcaster and radio presenter Ash London.

I thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook, which is brilliantly narrated by Jo Van Es.

This was such a fun, cute read! It had good humour, and the characters were fun.

I will admit, I struggled to connect to the FMC at the beginning as she’s very much into high end fashion, and I cannot relate to having much money, especially to doll out on clothes, but after I got over it, I really enjoyed her character!

The romance is light and fluffy, but also points out existing sexism within Australia (Aussie is basically my sibling country, as I’m from NZ!)

And Alex’s love interest, Leo?? Loved him!! I really liked the sort of “forbidden romance” trope as they work together, and the whole will they, won’t they, vibe I got. Also, bonus points for no third act breakup!

Overall, this was a fun, easy, enjoyable read that was well written and had fun characters! I definitely enjoyed it!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher Allen & Unwin for this eARC in exchange for an honest review!

Love On The Air is the first novel by Australian author, Ash London. So heartsore from a break-up that she throws in the job she loves and spends the last seven weeks of the year licking her wounds on a Philippine island, what could bring popular night DJ Alex York back to Sydney? A mysterious call from her friend and producer, Tom Winters, and a New Year’s resolution to regain her positive trajectory in life, seem to do the trick.

When her idol, Star FM breakfast DJ, Goldie Miller presents her with a dream job offer, how can she possibly refuse? Even an embarrassing encounter with the man who will be her boss won’t put her off. And Leo Billings may be just her type, but he’s her boss, and Alex has sworn off men. And if she is going to make her new timeslot hold its ratings, despite the sabotage and blackmail to which the male establishment resorts, there will be no time for romance.

There’s plenty of humour and a lot of fun characters in this breezy modern romance. While the copious brand-name dropping will likely appeal to younger readers and go over the heads of anyone uninterested in fashion, it certainly emphasises the superficiality that seems to be a hallmark of the industry.

London initially depicts her hard-partying protagonist as a compulsive shopper who buys shoes and bags in lieu of therapy. Luckily, she gives Alex a bit more depth as the story progresses, ultimately making it a triumph of women supporting each other and the power of social media when it matters. An entertaining debut.

Love on the Air was such a joy to read! I am unfamiliar with Aussie radio host/new author Ash London; however, her debut novel was such a heartwarming read. Alex York, a young radio host, is running from a relationship breakup. While hiding from her problems on a tropical island with her best friend, a once in a lifetime job opportunity is presented to her. Alex is persuaded by her co-host and close friend, Tom, to come home and step up to the challenge. Alex discovers that she is replacing her idol, Goldie and has a hot new boss, named Leo to contend with too. Things aren’t all smooth sailing for Alex but there’s nothing that a good shopping spree can’t fix! This romantic comedy is light and funny but also addressed topics such as women’s equality and death of a spouse. I love the pink cover and artwork too! Thanks to Better Reading for my preview copy of Love on the Air.

JOYFUL.

If I had only one word to describe the pages of this delightful book, it would be just that; joyful.

For anyone that has followed the author’s media career, you would know that Ash London’s M.O. when broadcasting and creating content is to bring joy to those listening or watching. So it’s no surprise that she’s now just nailed bringing joy to readers also.

Love On The Air allows you to forget your everyday problems and qualms, instead propelling you to grin ear to ear (and occasionally cry with joy) as you immerse yourself in the life of Alex York - an inspirational yet authentic female radio host.

Whilst the book can be seen as a light and fluffy easy read, it also does well to shine a spotlight on the sexism that is still a very real part of Australia’s (and no doubt the worlds) media industry. Plus the little radio tidbits provide an interesting peek behind the curtains into the industry - I had a big LOL at the politics around revealing TV spoilers.

5 STARS!

Such joy!
This book is that kind of perfect escapism where life is bubbly and optimistic and everything and everyone is fabulous all the time.
It starts off with a heartbroken Alex lolling around with her BFF in tropical paradise as she nurtures her broken heart with a winning combination of wallowing, yoga and rum.
Then comes the job offer of her dreams - the morning radio slot at her station, ‘The Alex York Breakfast Show’. Promoted by her mentor Gloria . And supported by a terribly good looking new boss Leo.
And it’s just a super fun ride. Alex is kind and witty, chaotic but impressively good at her job. I particularly enjoyed a FMC who backed herself- insecure about her love life but in everything else she knew she kicked ass.
It’s a love story slotted into several other love stories and it will make you feel all soppy and giddy.
I was way too invested in the relationships.
And this was a romance boss trope I could get on board with (normally I get the power play icks, but this was not that).
A tall glass of fizzy deliciousness.
A joyful debut @ashlondon

I found this book and its crew of characters entirely adorable and enjoyable, not to mention motivating. I did struggle to relate to Alex at the beginning with her constant splashing of cash, but honestly if I was in her position I'd probably do the same. I loved that she was determined to make a name for herself and to prove that radio didn't need to be a boys club any longer. I certainly wish I had a friend like Finley that's for sure! Leo was a great grumpy to Alex's sunshine and I loved how they balanced each other out and helped each other to grow.

My only criticism would be the constant label dropping throughout the book. It makes sense given Alex's shopping addiction but it felt like a bit much by the end of the book.

What a fun, fast read. I was so caught up in Love on the Air that I read it in a few short hours.
Alex is a hot mess but talented! She catches the eye of radio icon & legend Goldie, who offers Alex the job of a lifetime. But in an industry dominated by males, Alex feels like they are just waiting for an opportunity for her to fail. Alex’s new boss Leo is a widower but he has an instant connection with Alex, even though Alex does jump to some early conclusions about him.

Love on the Air was a slower burn, enemies to lovers. The romance was very mild and closed door. I felt like the romantic plot line naturally evolved but the greater focus was on Alex’s growth. Alex would deal with her stress & anxiety with shopping…like a borderline shopping addiction which left me wondering where she stored everything! She literally spent every dollar and had no financial responsibility. With the opportunity Goldie presented her, it was great to see she was making the most of it & trying to be more responsible. It helps that Alex was surrounded by people who believe in her.

I really enjoyed this book. It was full of fun pop culture references and it was a great setting & storyline.

Thank you to Allen & Unwin Australia for gifting me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.

This debut novel from Ash London was an absolute breath of fresh air and I loved it. I absolutely adored the FMC Alex and just couldn’t get enough of her.

This book started off with Alex having her heart broken and leaving her current radio gig, she then spent 7 weeks on a tropical Philippines island with her life time best friend Vanessa. She has an absolute ball but after a New Years promise to herself and a cryptic call from her best friend Tom, she flies home.

After being offered her dream job and absolutely loving it she tries to turn her life around. She has a serious spending problem and with the help of her aunt May and uncle Billy, she enlists the services of a financial advisor called Henry. He goes through all of her finances and gives it to her straight! Stop buying clothes and shoes!

I loved that side of Alex, I love shopping and it was nice to live it through her story. Of course her partner in crime Tom was just as bad as she was, this pair definitely had expensive tastes.

Through her new job she meets Leo, what a funny first meeting they had, it really made me chuckle. I enjoyed seeing this pair developing a lovely friendship which in turn leads to more. It was sweet watching them fall in love and seeing them be vulnerable with one another.

I really enjoyed all of the humour throughout the storyline, it was such a fun read and I could not put it down.

It also touched on some harder subjects such as death of spouse (previously and off page) along with sexism in the workplace which I thought the author did very well.

If you are looking for a book to escape into then I highly recommend you pick this book up.

This is such a fun read….it’s almost criminal.

When I picked this book up, I wanted a light-hearted story that would let me escape, and I got that and a whole lot more.

I absolutely loved the majority of the characters, but let’s face it, you need a villain or two to make things interesting. There are so many larger-than-life characters, and even a few quieter types, that just make their way in and they soon become your favourites.

The protagonist Alex is a force to be reckoned with and a dress style that just jumps off the page at you. She is sassy and impulsive, and there really couldn’t have been any other leading lady, and with her over-the-top producer/friend/family Tom, things go from fun to hilarious very quickly.

Although it is a world and lifestyle that I really just can’t comprehend, it still felt like I was experiencing it for myself. Rubbing shoulders with the famous and infamous like it’s an everyday occurrence and nothing out the ordinary, dining in style and shopping like there’s no tomorrow. Everything at your fingertips.

This story also has a lot of substance making it shine even more, cementing it as an amazing debut novel for Ash London.

There’s love, laughter and some happy ever after, I’m just not going to tell you whose it is….you’ll have to read it for yourself to find out.

Love On The Air is the debut novel from Ash London, darling of the radio airwaves and podcast industry. London has taken her experience and knowledge of commercial radio to create a fun, frothy novel that readers will tear through. With references to fashion and celebrities, think Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic for a new generation.

The central character is Alex York, under thirty and at a crossroads in her life. A breakup with her boyfriend sees Alex saying goodbye to her job and living on an island to lick her wounds for a couple months. When a fantasy job lands in her lap, Alex is persuaded to return to normal life at the helm of Star FM.

London lifts the lid on the life of a radio presenter and will leave the reader’s jaw on the floor. For this reader, the rampant sexism was shocking yet dealt with in a sensitive manner. Through it all Alex’s love of the job shines through, as does the building sexual tension with her boss, Leo. There’s only one problem. Alex is focused on work, not love.

Will Alex step away from the mic long enough to follow her heart?

In the beginning of this one I have to say I was bit worried I wasn’t going to enjoy it purely because the world that exists in this bool is not one I’ve ever been privy to - designer handbags, lavish lifestyles, friends with lots of money. I did find it hard to relate because of this.

However, the story itself was really quite a good one. Strong themes of women in male dominated industries, and powerful ones at that. I loved the relationship and real world issue representation despite the rich and famous nature of all of the characters.

I don’t know if I would have chosen this if I didn’t recognise the author, however I’m glad I did. It was enjoyable read and I think quite a few readers will love this one.

Lucky enough to receive an early copy of this book and it was a great debut novel! As an Australian, it isn’t often you read a book about where you’re from and actually know where the places are so that was really fun 😍 I did like that they also travelled so it wasn’t solely in Sydney. I’ve never read a workplace romance where they’re radio hosts and it was so different to my usual read! I loved the deeper topics this book touched on including how women can be treated in the workplace and the struggles they face.

It took me a bit to get into this book, but once I did, I was eating it up.
This is a story of love, facing fears and standing tall and kicking ass in a male dominated world where women are less.
The main character, Alex, is strong, independent and full of life. You can't help but fall in love with her.
If you enjoy a story with the glamorous life of the rich with some romance an a girl boss FMC, this book is for you.

Overview

Ash London’s debut novel is fun, heartwarming, and surprisingly impactful. It follows Alex York, a young radio host who, after a messy breakup, finds herself thrown into the opportunity of a lifetime—taking over a coveted radio spot from her idol, Goldie. With her best friend Tom encouraging her return, a very attractive new boss in Leo, and the high-pressure world of broadcasting to navigate, Alex quickly learns that this isn’t just another job. Think Sophie Kinsella’s Shopaholic meets The Bold Type, with a behind-the-scenes look at the cutthroat radio industry.

What I Loved

✔ A fresh and entertaining premise – The insider look at radio presenting was so interesting, and I loved how Ash London used her own industry experience to bring authenticity to the story.
✔ Alex York is such a relatable FMC – Her chaotic shopping habits? Way too real. The way she throws herself into her work while running from her problems? Been there. She reminded me of myself in my 20s (minus the designer vintage backpacks).
✔ The romance was the perfect slow burn – The workplace tension between Alex and Leo was so good, and I loved the will-they-won’t-they dynamic. Bonus points for no third-act breakup!
✔ Strong female friendships & women supporting women – Every female character in this book goes through something, and I loved seeing them uplift and root for each other.
✔ A balance of lighthearted fun & deeper themes – While it’s definitely a romance, Love on the Air also touches on sexual harassment, gender inequality in the workplace, and grief, adding depth to the story without feeling heavy-handed.

What Held It Back from 5 Stars?

➖ Some of the sexism in the radio industry was jaw-dropping, and while it was handled well, it was still frustrating to read at times. Not a flaw in the book itself, but definitely something to be aware of!
➖ I personally would have loved just a bit more development in Leo’s character—he was dreamy, but I wanted to get inside his head more.

Final Thoughts

This was such an engaging, feel-good read that had me laughing, swooning, and even a little ragey at times. If you love smart, career-driven heroines, slow-burn romance, and strong female friendships, this is definitely worth picking up. I’ll absolutely be watching out for Ash London’s next book!

Yeahnah, not really for me.
I listened to the audiobook of this one and for a start, the narrator enunciated as such that all of the characters were sort of given the same, stuffy, slightly superior air about them. I’m not sure how old the narrator was, but the way they said some words - especially ‘younger’ ones - felt so abnormal that I was picturing all the characters being in their 40’s. Also, the American and English accents were absolutely appalling. This lady’s voice sounded exactly like the lady who says ‘there’s a better Bref way’ and other miscellaneous ads, it didn’t really connect with characters or the story.
The tension and resolve romantically was far from titillating and there was about as much heat as a 4 year old Kmart toaster. Also, I felt like a proclamation of LOVE was quite premature given the amount of notable emotionally or physically intimate scenes between the two characters.
The workplace plot line was also incredibly mid, though I did enjoy trying to work out if the characters represented people in the authors real life. I think Tilly was probably Taylor Swift and maybe Goldie - Em Rus, but not sure.
Finally, the materialism and constant talk about designer this that and the other was nearly enough to make me turn off at 10%. Tom was a bit of a cretin imo, and I’ve never read a book that uses the words raucous and debautuous with such frequency but inefficiency.
I appreciate that this is the authors debut novel and I’m being rather harsh but it was between not finishing the book and sharing why I didn’t want to finish it. So I chose this option and am hopeful that no one else will agree with me and others will love this book way more than I did.

Love on the Air, the sparkling debut from Australian radio star Ash London, delivers a fun, high-energy enemies-to-lovers romance set in the fast-paced world of broadcasting. When rising radio talent Alex York spectacularly tanks her career, she escapes to a tropical island—only to be lured back to the mic for the comeback of a lifetime.

I'll admit it took me a little while to warm up to Alex. At first, her obsession with high-end fashion and flashy spending made her feel a bit over-the-top and hard to connect with. But as the story unfolded, I grew to love her vibrant personality. Leo, her grumpy boss-turned-love interest, provided the perfect contrast, creating an irresistible push-pull dynamic between them.

The romance itself is sweet and slow-burning, with a forbidden love twist—Leo is technically Alex’s boss, adding a layer of tension. If you're looking for spice, this one leans more on the cozy and heartfelt side. That said, the pacing of their relationship felt natural, and best of all—no dreaded third-act breakup!

The supporting cast adds so much charm. Who wouldn’t want to be BFFs with a star like Finley or have a work husband like Tom? The novel also weaves in sharp but seamless commentary on sexism in the workplace and media, making important points without feeling heavy-handed.

Overall, Love on the Air is a well-written, entertaining debut filled with fun characters, heartfelt moments, and a romance that keeps you hooked. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can’t wait to see what Ash London writes next!

Love On The Air is an ode to the workplace rom-com. It’s witty, funny, and empowering. It deals in love and loss, about understanding our flaws and wanting to improve on them, about taking your time with things in this age of fast lifestyles.

At first I was finding it hard to relate to Alex York (which is obviously a play on Ash London’s name, an A name and a major city in the UK) because of her wealth and taste for the expensive. I hesitate to spend $20 on a T-shirt, let alone what Alex spends. Yet somehow, just like she did with Leo, she won me over. I think it’s because deep down, every person reading a romance has once had their heart broken and wanted to do the best and be the best that they can be after a break up. Give the people that hurt us a big fuck you, followed by the bird.

Alex is unapologetically fierce, capable, and strong and I love that she stands up for her beliefs. I love the slow way that she and Leo fall in love; that comfortable friends to lovers trope that I’m often not the biggest fan of but works so well here.

Alex and I are the same age and what I wouldn’t give to have the same confidence that she has got. She’s really inspired me and I give full credit to Ash London and her team at Allen & Unwin for that inspiration.

Fear or love — I’m gonna choose love every time now.

I absolutely adored this one!!

Alex is a super star radio presenter that everyone loves, she goes through a bit of a rocky patch then comes back better than ever! Her new gig is an opportunity of a lifetime, and we are taken on this fun filled journey, with lots of laughs and so much love!

Apart from the horrible colleague and patronising CEO, there are some fantastic characters in this book! Alex is supported by so many wonderful people in her life, it just filled my heart with so much joy! Every character charmed me, they were witty and fun. There were some cracking one liners!

But Leo, oh Leo, what a man! Ah he was perfection and I loved these two, their banter and interactions were pure entertainment!

This book will be relatable in different ways to everyone, that’s one of the things I loved about it. And boy was it a lot of fun! I giggled so much, I smiled the whole way through (although at one point I was very mad) shed happy tears then smiled some more!

My heart is so happy, giving this all the stars and highly recommend it!

Thank you so much @allenandunwin and @netgalley for the early copy.

This was the perfect easy read for my Saturday night in!
Alex York is a radio show host, but when her boyfriend unexpectedly breaks up with her, she quits her job and escapes to the Philippines to reset with her BFF Vanessa. Then she gets an offer to be the new host of Star FM’s breakfast show when her idol Goldie Miller retires, and she’s lured back to Sydney. Her new boss is Leo Billings, and she’s attracted to him, but she doesn’t have time for romance as she tries to tackle the male establishment she works in.
This was SO FUN! Alex cracked me up, and I could totally relate to her bad budgeting and shopping addiction (I wish I couldn’t relate but alas I do love shopping and pretending I’m rich 😂). Working in radio sounds so entertaining, and with Ash working in radio herself I feel like this was a pretty honest portrayal of it. The sexism and typical male douchiness made me fucking pissed, but Alex was amazing at standing up for herself and her team. The romance was cute, but honestly I just loved the general vibes of this so much I actually let it fall into the background. This is filled with laugh out loud moments and fun shenanigans and I just adored it. Definitely an author to watch!
Huge thanks to @allenandunwinnz for sending this my way ❤️

It’s no surprise that Ash London is a woman of many talents. Like many Aussies, I spent much of my 20s listening to Ash London Live so I was especially excited to dive into her debut novel, inspired by her experience in the radio industry. I was lucky enough to win this signed copy from her podcast Hopeless Romantics 💜

This was such a delightful read.

Radio DJ Alex York has just been dumped, quit her job and finds herself adrift on a tropical island with a rapidly dwindling bank account. When the opportunity for a comeback presents itself, a dream gig on a high profile breakfast show, she returns to the spotlight, but she must navigate a patronising CEO, a long time rival, and a very attractive new boss.

Ash’s insider knowledge of the radio industry shines through, giving the story an authentic, behind-the-scenes edge. The characters felt so real that I could easily imagine their real-life inspirations 👀 All in all, I throughly enjoyed this smart, funny, and sweet debut and look forward to more of Ash's writing.

This was a bit cute. I first saw Ash London on 'Have You Been Paying Attention' and when I heard she was releasing a romance novel I was intrigued!

Radio host, Alex, has just been promoted by a prominent female broadcaster who has announced her retirement and chosen Alex as her successor for the hit breakfast show. She has also been given charming, broody Leo as her new boss. Cue all the enemies to lovers tension and workplace drama that ensues.

This was a book focused on fashion, (I had no idea what was being talked about half the time in relation to this 😅) celebrities and lives of the rich and famous, as well as a sneak peek into the radio industry with a very pro-women spin which was great to read. It did make me wonder throughout how many stories were autobiographical given Ash's career as a radio host, so it was really interesting. A very sweet, easy read 🥰

Ash London you blew this out of the water. This book had me hooked from the beginning, I genuinely wanted to be friends with Alex (& Tom tbh).

I loved diving into the world of radio and entertainment, as an outsider I feel like its such a glamorous field and one I am genuinely curious…..(bet you guys don’t have to deal with bodily fluids on the daily 😂)

I also loved how Ash ensured the relationship between Leo and Alex was truely respectful of his bereaved wife, and quite realistic to how a grieving widower would approach this situation… well done Ash!

I honestly enjoyed this contemporary romance so so much. I have been a fan of Ash London for many years, so was so excited to read her novel!
