Rico Kline is finding that the life of a summoned being isn’t an easy one.
At any moment he could be summoned to another world and ordered to participate in a battle, be experimented on by strange species, or even babysit a deadly monster.
His life on Earth isn’t any easier, as mysterious people and organizations try to track him down for their own nefarious purposes. Despite the dangers, Rico’s power continues to grow as the system rewards his efforts. He’s also not alone as new allies emerge and if he’s lucky, he just might find a place of refuge in the chaotic world he now lives in.
Book 2 in this unique spin on isekai LitRPG, about a MC turned into a summon minion who has to complete tasks for random summoners, allowing for a variety of adventures, foes, and missions as he progresses in power each time... But is any of it random?
The first book was a huge hit for me, and the second was just as good. This series definitely managed to pull me into the LitRPG genre and keep me entertained, but personally I find that books like this as very rare in the genre. This book keeps the same good paced story telling without dragging the story along for word-count that so many other books in LitRPG do. When the book shows you Rico's stats and inventory, it's a quick thing and not a whole chapter wasted. The ability of Dean Henegar to seamlessly blend the LitRPG element into a decent story is something I continue to be impressed with. If you couldn't already tell, I am extremely skeptical of the LitRPG genre as a whole due to so much slop being churned out and people still flocking to it, but I absolutely believe that You Are Summoned is a series that really does deserve to achieve a higher place in the rankings due to the high quality writing and well structured story that it continues to deliver. I thoroughly enjoyed this second entry into the series and recommend you read it, too.
I adore this action-packed litRPG adventure. There's nothing better than fighting after being summoned off world and trying to survive during the length of time the summoning lasts without the worry of a true death and gaining loot and essence to level too boot, all depending on how well you did. Only to get home and have to fight the true enemies, only this time death is real. Yeah Rico faces all of it even getting a gelatinous cube for a companion beast, because he’s living a solitaire life... And he's lonely! So yeah grab this book and find out how everything works out for Rico and Melvin the beast.
Here's a quote that tickled me:
“If my hand melts off, you’re getting a bad Yelp review,” I warned as I placed my hand on the cube.
I waited on this book for what seemed like forever because I always listen to the Audible as I read along with the Kindle edition. The Audible version took an exceedingly long time to be released after the Kindle version came out. It was absolutely worth the wait, but now I must wait for the Audibles to drop to the rest of the series that's already released--or just about to be--in the Kindle format. I can't wait! I'll keep obsessively checking my Audible app until I find the release date for book three. 10/10 stars with no hesitation. Also, I love his new companion!
The second book is as good as the first. I loved all the variety of scenarios that Rico finds himself in. He's leading quite an interesting life as a Summoned Being. Back home, he's in even more danger, and ends up finding helpful allies.
I wanted a little more balance between the two lives Rico is living. Earthside, some things come a bit too easy, while the fallout is handled with just as much emotional distance. It's explained well when Rico is on a mission, but I'd like a little more emotional impact when he's home.
Small nitpicks. The action and creativity is a lot of fun!
This sequel is an upgrade in all ways to book 1. Rico grows into his class more and joins a group of like-minded Earth Summons. He gains a companion summons who is slowly integrated into his offworld home. Lots of short visits to a wide variety of worlds with a lot of diversity in the quests and rewards. Good book.
Not a standalone. Guy continues his adventures as a summoned being. He visits a magical city that caters to summons. Enters a tournament. Works for a dungeon and the a starship. He meets a demon. Escapes a cult and joins a summon protection group.
Definitely not a standalone. The pace continues steady. Feels like an anthology. Great narrator. Please enjoy
Rico makes some moves on earth that end up giving him a safe space while he is off on Summons jobs that often leave him exposed. And his summons jobs continue to be an odd mix of the typical combat roles to the one pictured on the cover with Junior.
The MC continues to be summoned into weird situations. He levels and learns to adapt, but the greater danger is corporate and cultist groups that want to seize him back on mana starved earth.
Rico is back. New friends, new enemies, new pet, some evil cultists and cats. Levels are gained, and a surprising rating in the summoned beings Olympics. Several new apartments, the last one might stick
Absolutely a great series. I'm reading this as it is written over on Royalroad. It's one of my top five favorite reads over there. I think it has great potential to be quite a long running series. For me it is an absolute blast to read.
This volume has better pacing than the first. I liked the arena and the dungeon segments but I do wish the Earth side intrigue got a little more development.
I really enjoyed this book. The story takes unexpected turns, and the protagonist is different from the norm. The author takes the story down paths that aren't mainstream.
