For some reason I could not get more than 10 pages into this book so take my review with that in mind. The writing style didn't grab me right away and as my good friend says "life's too short".....
As a Houstonian who went to the Gallant Knight and lived in Mariner's Village apartments, I wanted to like this book. But very glad I purchased on clearance at Half Price Books.
I really wanted to like this book. I read the other reviews AFTER I'd already finished it.
Others didn't go into detail about why they thought it was bad. Here's a couple things I noted. First, I actually liked the main character. I anticipated that she would have a difficult, elitist attitude, but she didn't. However, there were far too many characters to keep up with. Stories would be told about a couple of them in one chapter but I couldn't remember who they were when they were mentioned 3 chapters later (after being introduced to even more characters). Second, the book jumped around to the point that I thought that I'd forgotten something that would explain why the guy she was hot for in the first chapter didn't show up again until one of the last chapters! Also, there were some issues that I picked up on that were left unresolved...she kept hinting about an illness or medical issue but it was never explained and could her mother/sister really be that nuts??
Basically, I found the book to be a light read but very challenging to follow. I won't go out of my way to read anymore books by this author.
I hate, and I mean really, really, hate to give a book a bad review. I know how hard authors work to bring a book to life. But this book is one of the worst I've ever read. I really thought it would be interesting for me, I live here in Houston, I'm familiar with lots of things she talks about in the book. But it was so bad I couldn't even finish it. I skipped to the end to just see what happened, but I couldn't read it all. This is the first book in many, many years that I couldn't even finish. I finish them all, whether I like them or not. But not this one. I hope this book works for someone else, but for me, it was just unreadable.
This book, according to the back cover, is "a light beach read, that will make you laugh outlouder than you have ever laughed before." BULLSHIT! I read all 228 pages of one disaster after another and found nothing funny at all. I want to know what the reviewer who said that it was "laugh champange bubbles out of your nose funny" was on so that I can share in it. The only thing this character had going for her was that no matter what happened, she seemed to be optomistic about it. I will NOT read anything else by this author EVER!
Well, this was an odd one. At first I enjoyed it. This gal is living every Texas girl's dream life and doing it well. When it started going into her back history, it got a little hard to believe that she had done all that was claimed. I know this is a novel, but c'mon. At least make it within the realm of possiblity.
This is just bad. It may be the worst book I have ever read, but I did finish it, and I think that says something, although I don't know what it says, perhaps that I will read anything. I don't usually say anything negative when I read an unfortunate book, but this was just so very bad.
I just picked up this book to read at lunch time. The cover said it was the perfect light read for a day at the beach, so I thought it would work for lunch time reading.
