Rate this book
Evelyn never imagined marrying her sister’s former fiancé, but a family scandal forces her into a marriage of convenience with Lord Nathaniel Hartley. Once overshadowed by her sister, she now faces the challenge of finding her place as a wife of duty, not love.

Nathaniel, still haunted by his past love, marries Evelyn out of necessity. Yet, as he begins to see her strength, he wonders if he can move on and embrace the unexpected bond forming between them…

Together, they must confront their pasts and decide if their fragile union can become something more. Can they turn their marriage of convenience into one built on love, or will their old wounds keep them apart forever?

The main character was a DOORMAT, and there was a distinct lack of spice.

Waste of Paper

This novel must have been one of her first books ever published because the story was written for 12-year-olds with an ending that would put me off of sugar for the rest of my life. The last thing I will say is that the format should not waste soooo much paper, it is not good for the environment. I gave it 2 stars.

There was an Indian movie 'Aaina' in the 90s with this exact story. Lately I had been wondering that regency era would suit the story perfectly. But while that was such a deeply moving romantic movie, this one is totally wasted potential.

In the movie, the H slowly but surely falls in love with the h and confesses BEFORE the sister comes back. They are just basking in the discovery and acceptance of their love before all hell breaks loose. The H was quite smart there and the h a total doormat towards the end with the sister threatening suicide if she didn't get the H.

That melodrama aside, it made for a much better story. In this novel, I did understand what the H was going though and why he does what he does but that doesn't mean we have to like it. The h keeps getting hurt and humiliated again and again.

Also these self-publishing authors need really good beta readers. The grandma is suddenly mentioned as Lady Beatrice at around 60% of the book and there are FOUR Blackwoods in the story. Doesn't the author know any other surname?

Anomalies and contradictions

This was a complex story with a likeable heroine. However, there were a few contradictions and anomalies in the story which should have been caught by an editor. The storyline was good, and most of the characters appealing. An interesting, but not compelling read. I received this book as an ARC and am giving an honest review.

The heroine steps in and marries her sister’s fiancée as the sister ran away the night before the wedding. The hero can’t seem to move on from his first love. The heroine tries to make the best of things and soon falls in love with her husband. Then trouble arrives as the sister tries to ruin the marriage. It had intriguing elements to the storyline so it kept my attention.

Save the last dance

Great story wonderful story line great characters, A few days ago I read a story much like this, same story line. Where the bride runs off with a army man, and the groom married her sister to quit the scandal. Evie, and Nathaniel, found true happiness among her sister' betrayal.
Thank you ♥️
