A part of India that is associated with the best living traditions of craft, wonderful cuisine, houseboats and shikaras, rushing mountain streams and snow-clad mountains, Srinagar (kashmir) is a garden of paradise. This book explores the history and architectural legacy of this 500-year-old city by bringing alive the rich past with its different eras of rulers who made this a part of their empire. To understand the present context of the city the book takes on a series of walks giving you a chance to get a sense of the architectural legacy, as well as the dynamic interplay of civic life, religion, and trade in the city.
From picking this up at the quaint Oxford Bookstore in CP, Delhi; to absolutely loving every detailed page of illustrations and walkway narratives, 'Srinagar' brought back fond memories of a short week-long trip I had taken this year, in August 2021. The book splendidly brings together maps, images, history, and walking tour guides to provide a fully immersive experience of the city. And what better institution than INTACH to rely on for the most authentic and accurate details on the architectural legacy of a civilisation that is so far removed and yet related by blood (through the Mughals, Dogras, etc.) to the hotter plains of India. Definitely worth a read!
