A Jesus-Shaped Life: How Biblically Sound Theology Deepens Our Relationship with God and Each Other

Rate this book
Moving beyond facts to experience the fullness of God

Theology is a conversation about God. One that invites us to experience God in all His fullness rather than just memorizing facts about God. Theology is not some academic subject to only be pursued by professors and seminarians. Theology is the way we connect with our Redeemer. It's how we remember that we're His. And we will never have to be alone.

This seven-week Bible study by Lisa Harper, titled A Jesus-Shaped Life, is your invitation to explore the depths of God's character, God's love for you, and how your relationship with Him transforms you. Ultimately, you will experience how biblically sound theology deepens your relationship with God and each other.

Unpack rich theological concepts, like:

Imago Dei—what it means to be made in God's image
Hypostatic union—Jesus as fully God and fully human
Christ's Transcendence—that He is above and beyond all creation. He is holy, eternal, and sovereign.
Christ's Immanence—that He is present with and near to His creation.
Coram Deo—living every moment in the presence of God.
Pneumatology—the Holy Spirit, His role, and His work in our lives
. . . and so much more!

This study guide includes:

In-depth personal Bible study between sessions

Lisa Harper is a hilarious storyteller and theological scholar―a gifted communicator whose writing and speaking overflows with colorful, pop-culture references that connect the dots between the Bible era and modern life. “Her God-given ability to not merely teach the Word but package it in a way that stirs the heart and calls to action is incomparable” says Priscilla Shirer. For six years Lisa served as the director of Focus on the Family's national women's ministry where she created the popular Renewing the Heart conferences. The next six years found her serving on the local level as the women's ministry director at a large church in Nashville. As the author of eleven books, and a Masters of Theological Studies with honors from Covenant Seminary, she is now a sought-after Bible teacher and speaker. Lisa was on the Women of Faith national arena tour and speaks at many other large events as well as at hundreds of churches all over the world. Lisa describes her greatest accomplishment to date as getting to be Missy’s mama.

This study and the companion book were extremely helpful to me but in ways that I didn’t expect when I first opened them. I purchased both books with the intention of strengthening my ability to defend what I believe. What I got was more inline with the actual title - A Jesus Shaped Life. While the book’s premise is to develop readers who look more like Christ it leverages an erudite study of scripture to do this. It can be heady at times but it’s definitely not beyond the average Christian reader, of which I am. I would summarize both books message with three words and their definitions:
Orthodoxy - what we believe to be true of God, which should inform our,
Orthopathy - right feelings in light of what we believe to be true about God, which should inform our,
Orthopraxy - how we live in light of what we believe to be true about God
Continuing to study our orthodoxy will have the natural effect of honing our thoughts/feelings and actions into something more like Jesus.

And, I would add, the books provided a lot of insight and reminders into and about Holy Spirit, a member of the trinity that I often shove to the side.

The book drifts a bit with the story telling and analogies, but I did this as a group study with the guide and video. At first I wasn't sure , but as we moved along I found myself taking more and more out of the learning in here. There is a wealth of knowledge in this book between the stories, and I am glad I completed this along with the guide.

What a great study about God's love for us and how we demonstrate His love to others through community. Lisa took on tough topics with grace and unfolded the study beautifully.
