Because You Are My Baby

An imaginative and heartwarming ode that celebrates a parent’s affection for a child

If I were a skywriter, I’d write your name up high
In sparkling golden loop-the-loops across a summer sky.

To what heights will a mom or dad go to celebrate their love for a son or daughter? Will they climb Mount Everest? Will they write a hit song? From making pizza as a chef and blasting off as an astronaut visiting Mars, to gathering gemstones as a geologist and granting wishes as a genie, a parent’s fanciful desires for his or her child come true as the child discovers each wonder while mom lovingly looks on. This book is a great read aloud at storytime to subtly introduce careers, soothing as a bedtime book or lullaby, and an ideal gift for new mothers and for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

The dynamic first-time author and illustrator team treats parents and children to a story that celebrates affection with imagination. The free lines and warm, soft colors of Marcellus Hall’s illustrations bring to life Sherry North’s rhythmic and lively text, resulting in a heartfelt testament to the boundless love of a parent.

Praise for Because You Are My Baby
“Around this time of year, in anticipation of Mother’s Day, the shelves are flooded with sentimental books about how much mothers love their children. That’s not a bad thing; it’s certainly something to be celebrated. But when a book comes along that portrays this powerful love in a fresh and spirited way, that’s truly cause for celebration. The fantasies are clever and the bold watercolor illustrations of the intrepid duo are delightfully retro.” — San Francisco Chronicle

“Hall makes an impressive picture book debut. Hall's radiant, double-page watercolors showcase his gifts for dramatic sweep and comic telling detail.”
— Publishers Weekly

“An energetic and inspiring testament to motherhood.”
— Kirkus Reviews

“Rhythms reminiscent of those in Margaret Wise Brown’s Runaway Bunny .”

4.5 stars. It took me awhile to get into this one, but after a few rereads, I’ve decided it is worth my time. My favorite part is where the mom blows the kiss from TV. Really an interesting plot twist there, and beautifully executed.

A parent tells of all the things they would do for their baby if they had various occupations. A nice celebration of a parent's love. The illustrations are fantastic.

Because You are My Baby is a book that incorporates an amazing writing technique, with amazing illustrations. The mother in this story tells her child of the various things she will do for him in different scenarios. With amazing watercolor illustration, Sherry North portrays a mother who is telling her son how much she loves him with words and images. She explains that as a sailor, an astronaut, or even a genie, she will always love him and do anything to make him happy because he is her child. In this book, North conveys the boundless love of parenthood. It shows, through many amazing examples, with many beautiful illustrations how parents should express their love. Throughout the examples, the mother provides new vocabulary, colorful illustrations and even some candy to keep the child entertained. The examples shown convey the different behaviors that parents should take when raising and reading to their children.

This is a fun book for parents and kids to share. All of the things that a mother would do for her baby (sing hit songs as a rock star, bring the baby precious gems as a geologist, drive a buggy on the moon as an astronaut, throw a touchdown as the quarterback, etc.) make for a whimsical story. The illustrations are lovely although somewhat muted (perhaps not the most visually appealing for a younger crowd). Fun!

I loved reading this book to my four year old, and he loved combing the beautiful images for the teddy bear. The writing is wonderful and carries a powerful message: that parents would do anything for their child.

I love the watercolor art work in this book. It just glows, as all good watercolors must!

The words are just perfect for my daughter and I. Even though I think the author wrote this for a boy.

I really liked this book.

I like this book more for a one-on-one experience rather than use for storytime. It's a story of unconditional love, very touching.
