Rule 1: No flirting.
Rule 2: No one can know your real identity.
Rule 3: Nothing can get in the way of the bride’s perfect wedding.

Being a bridesmaid-for-hire doesn’t exactly pay off law school loans, though the job gives Gwendoline Watson time to indulge in her writing for her music platform Shut Up & Sway.

But thirteen subscribers don’t add up to a lucrative career, so Gwen agrees to work overtime at a destination wedding to pay for her cat’s emergency surgery. There could be worse ways to make money—or so Gwen thinks until she lands on the dreamy Italian coast and learns the groom is the first love who broke her heart.

Duncan Avila is a wedding singer with a modern yacht-rock vibe whose voice can make any bridesmaid fall at his feet. Except the one he really wants.

Between hilarious day trips to matchmake the mismatched bride and groom and swoony late-night schemes to help Duncan’s dreams come true, is Gwen destined to always be the bridesmaid in life and love? Or is everything she ever wanted right there in front of her, just waiting for a girl like her?

This heartwarming, slow burn romance is filled with charm, laughter, and a touch of wanderlust—perfect for curling up with as it whisks you away to the breathtaking beaches of Positano.

Growing up in Pittsburgh, Katie loved old movies and playing dress up, but never considered telling stories of her own until she was asked to start a blog for the sleepwear company she worked for. Unsure what to say about lingerie, she wrote a fictional serial about a girl chasing her costume design dreams who fell in love with a rock star along the way. And that’s when Katie fell in love with storytelling. That blog became the first book in "The Brightside Series" and she’s been waking before dawn to write ever since. Katie lives in Los Angeles with her husband and three children and is currently working on book #3 in "The Keystone Series", which will release in 2022.

Waiting for a Girl Like You by Katie Delahanty is a delightful escape into a world of love, self-discovery, and transformation. Delahanty’s writing is enchanting, drawing you in from the very first page, with just the right mix of humor to keep things light and entertaining.

We meet Gwen, a successful-for-now "hired bridesmaid," but behind the charming facade, she's struggling—broke, unfulfilled, and feeling adrift. Despite her big dreams, she lacks the confidence to chase them, and at the start of the book, her life feels like a series of chaotic events. But as the story progresses, Gwen’s journey becomes impossible to put down. The universe seems to be tossing her around, yet somehow, it’s also placing her exactly where she needs to be, even if it means uprooting her life completely.

Caught in a love triangle, Gwen faces the challenge of reconciling her past with the person she’s becoming. The pacing picks up beautifully halfway through the book, and before you know it, you’ll be hooked, rooting for Gwen as she navigates these emotional and romantic hurdles.

The setting of Italy is absolutely stunning, with Delahanty’s vivid descriptions of both the landscape and the mouthwatering food creating an immersive experience. I could almost taste the lemon basil cakes and feel the Mediterranean breeze. The imagery alone made me want to hop on a plane and dive into an Italian adventure myself!

I also couldn't help but think that this book deserves its own playlist. From start to finish, I felt like I was ready to Shut up & Sway the entire time.

If you love romance with just the right amount of spice, breathtaking backdrops, delicious food, and a heroine who transforms from a hot mess to someone discovering her fairytale ending, then Waiting for a Girl Like You is a must-read! It’s a beautifully crafted story that will leave you with a smile. I can’t wait to see what Katie Delahanty has in store for us next!

I received an advanced copy of the book for an honest or objective review.

Thanks to NetGalley I got to review this book and here are my thoughts:

I was hooked on this book from the moment I picked it up, and read it in 24 hours. I loved the character development and their relationship and each of their personalities shined so bright and I really felt like I got to know them.

This book is about finding true love, finding yourself, and being happy with everything in between.

This was a hilariously entertaining romance novel. It read almost like an adult fairytale complete with wishing upon a star for true love during a meteor shower. Gwen and Duncan have an undeniable chemistry that is almost palpable throughout the story. It’s definitely a slow burn romance with several complicating factors but of course it ends in a happily ever after.

Gwen is an intriguing and dynamic character. She graduated from law school but then chose to pursue her passion of being a music tastemaker. However, her passion project isn’t paying her bills so she’s also working as a bridesmaid for hire. It’s very interesting how she has a certain lightness to her internal voice and a sense of humor while also having suffered tragedy and heartbreak.

Duncan seems to be pretty one sided at first glance, playing the role of the charismatic musician playboy. All Gwen really knows about him is that he’s talented and he uses his charm to seduce a new bridesmaid every week. She prides herself on being the last bridesmaid standing but as she gets to know him better, she starts to realize that there’s more to him than meets the eye.

It’s a very fun and humorous rom-com while also skillfully weaving in heavier subject matter. Both Gwen and Duncan have their own personal struggles and are trying to make their way through life without having to sacrifice what they love. Their rough journeys of personal growth and healing add a backbone to this romance that could easily just be a feel good fluff piece.

I did enjoy this novel but if you’re looking for a sweet romance, this is not for you. There are few steamy sex scenes and some strong language sprinkled throughout. It was odd how the language was so clean and then every so often an f bomb was thrown in, almost as if it was required in order to qualify as an adult novel. I personally think it would’ve been better without the f bomb quota since it clashed with the overall tone.

I also didn’t love the ending, it seemed to be kind of rushed in comparison to how long it took for Gwen and Duncan to get together. It would’ve been better if it was a few pages longer or if it skipped ahead to the future to show just a scene or two of their happily ever after. I wanted more of a resolution than a quick ‘and then they realized they’d found true love, the end.’ Overall, it was a solid story so I give it three and half stars.

Gwen is currently working as a bridesmaid for hire for a wedding planner, and she has been asked to fill-in for a wedding in Italy at the last minute to pose as the best friend and maid of honor of the bride. While on the plane, she is seated next to gorgeous Duncan, who she knows from other weddings she has worked in the past, as he is the lead singer of a wedding band. Since she did not have the time to prepare for the wedding as usual, Gwen gets the shock of her life when she discovers that the groom is her first love, Ethan, who she hasn't seen since she was seventeen. To make matters worse, Ethan doesn't seem to remember her, or does he? She needs this job, so she tries to hide that she knows Ethan from almost everyone, except she finds herself confiding in Duncan. Exploring Italy as part of the wedding party puts her in the path of Ethan at every turn and puts her job in jeopardy as the pre-wedding festivities bring to light that Ethan and his future wife, Zoey, may not be the love match that everyone thinks. After a wedding guest blows Gwen's cover, it forces Gwen to a crossroads of what she really wants: is it her past with Ethan or a possible future with Duncan, who she finds more attractive after spendings more time together?

This was a really fun read. I'm so glad to have another Katie Delahanty book to read, and she never disappoints! There were moments where I laughed out loud and there were some really heartwarming moments as Gwen really discovers herself and what she wants in a career and her life. There was a moment when she learned about her dead brother's role in how she met Ethan when she was younger that was really emotional. I thought that Delahanty did a great job of transporting you back to what it was like to be an awkward 17 year old and how those emotions and experiences can influence who someone becomes. I really enjoyed Gwen’s journey and how she decided to put her and her dreams first for once. There were some terrific side characters, and a wonderful story.

This was a slow-burn romance where the main characters gradually found their way to each other. Reading this book made me want to go to Positano! The author did a great job describing the location.

Plot Summary
Gwen is a professional bridesmaid, hired to make sure weddings go smoothly. Duncan is a wedding singer. When they're both hired for a destination wedding in Italy, their job is simple: keep the wedding drama-free. But Gwen and Duncan find themselves in the eye of the drama! How can they possibly complete their assignment?

Thoughts?

> Character development
Gwen is portrayed as a perfect main character, while Duncan takes on a more supportive role. I didn't really connect with Duncan. Because the story is told from Gwen's perspective, we don't get to see his true personality as much as we could have. Luigi and Zoey are the stars of this book. Zoey, the bride, really stood out to me. She initially seemed like she might be a "bridezilla," but she turned out to be a kind and thoughtful person.

> Pacing
It took me a little while to get into the groove of this story. I think I was in a different mood when I started reading. But once I got into it, it was an easy read.

> Tropes
The story almost feels like a forbidden romance. Or, if you consider the main characters, it has elements of a love triangle.

> Setting
The destination wedding in Italy is the heart of this book. This story couldn't have happened anywhere else. The cover doesn't really capture the feel of the story. The beautiful Italian backdrop really helped set the mood while the characters sorted out their lives. I loved how, towards the end, the scenery kind of "gave up" and everything went wild—it felt like a great symbol for the story's climax.

Who Is This Book For?
If you love wedding chaos, paradise vacations and ex-is-the-groom/bride stories, this is for you.

Thank you, Netgalley for the free ARC for an honest review.

What an absolute treat! I can feel the Italian sun and taste the sweet limoncello. Gwen is a failed-lawyer-turned-professional-bridesmaid. She’s hired to make sure the wedding festivities always go off without drama – no embarrassing drunk uncles, no spiteful mothers-in-law, no sloppy messes on the dance floor. Gwen’s also a devoted cat mom and even more devoted music fan. An intensely, obsessively devoted music fan. When Gwen is hired last minute to work a destination wedding in Italy, she suddenly finds herself in close contact with a very talented but very infuriating wedding singer, Duncan. But what’s more, turns out she knows the groom, Ethan. And that’s definitely a problem when she’s supposed to be pretending to be a very real, very dear friend of the bride. It also doesn’t help that Ethan broke her heart once upon a time. Picture Kate Hudson’s Penny Lane playing Kate Hudson in an early 2000s wedding-themed rom com, like the Golden Era of wedding rom coms. That’s how this book feels (which is 1000% a compliment, obviously).

There’s Ex-Loves combined with Enemies to Lovers, and I honestly wasn’t sure which guy Gwen was destined to end up with. Delahanty grabbed my attention right from the beginning and kept me guessing almost to the end. This one is a slow burn.

I also was craving lemon basil cakes the entire time! Delahanty really knows how to immerse you into a scene, making you feel like you’re at the party. And her excellent taste in music doesn’t hurt (thanks to this book, I haven’t been able to stop debating with people whether Toto is a yacht rock band!). I’ve been familiar with Delahanty for awhile now, but this is my favorite of her books (though I also have a sweet spot for IN BLOOM). I can’t wait for other people to discover her.

Although I received an advance copy of this book and was eager to read it after reading some of the author’s other titles, I was not prepared to enjoy it as much as I did. If life permitted, I would have finished it in one sitting. Because it did not, I found myself lamenting that it was not yet an audiobook so I could listen to the story as I crept through LA traffic (AFTER dropping kids off…it wasn’t exactly G rated which was also fun!) and then as the end of the book approached I wanted to slow myself down so I had something to look forward to when I had a moment to sit and read and did not want it to end (but voraciously tore through the last several chapters eager to learn how things get wrapped up…would there be a cliff hanger? A tidy bow? A chance for a sequel? If I’m being honest, it was an easy beach read, I could practically see the Hallmark (or Lifetime? Netflix? It was too racy for Hallmark probably) movie in my mind and hear the sound track as I began each chapter, mostly cleverly titled after a different yacht rock song, most of which I knew, some I did not but wanted to look up just to see. I literally wanted a Spotify playlist I could just click on so I could relive each chapter. The characters were flawed but still likeable, the setting, Positano Italy, was distinct and vivid, much like the author’s first book In Bloom was a love letter to LA, this was to Italy, and the expected theme of love and romance took on layered meanings as the main character struggled with not only finding romantic love but also finding friendships and herself and how to love who she was first and foremost. If you’re headed on a trip and your mind needs an escape from the world and the doom scrolling, get yourself this book. It’s adorable and you will feel delighted, buzzy and satiated like an aperol spritz and a delicious bowl of homemade spaghetti.

Katie Delahanty delivers a charming and delightful rom-com in Waiting for a Girl Like You, a novel that stands out with its unique premise and engaging storytelling. With a fresh and compelling setup, Delahanty masterfully immerses readers in a world that feels both whimsical and heartfelt.

The novel’s storyline is not only well-conceived but also executed with finesse, making it an absolute must-read for fans of romantic comedies. Delahanty’s writing shines as she crafts an atmosphere so vivid and inviting that readers can easily picture themselves alongside the characters. Her descriptions bring the setting and emotions to life, making the journey feel personal and immersive.

Beyond the engaging plot, the novel’s charm lies in its humor, endearing protagonists, and a romance that feels both modern and swoon-worthy. The chemistry between the leads is palpable, with witty banter and heartfelt moments that keep the pages turning.

Overall, Waiting for a Girl Like You is a delightful escape, perfect for readers looking for a rom-com that blends originality with heartfelt emotion. Delahanty’s ability to draw readers into her world makes this novel a standout in the genre—one that shouldn’t be missed.

I’ll be completely honest: it took me quite a while to truly get into this story. It unfortunately felt like the story and eventual romance was dragging for most of the book, and I couldn’t get into Gwen and Duncan’s relationship potential until the 75% mark. I spent a lot of the story knowing where the plot was headed, but it felt like it took forever to arrive at the destination.

This isn’t to say I didn’t enjoy this romance; I did, and ended up giving it a fairly high rating. But, I did contemplate DNF-ing the book a few time, as it felt like it was taking a long time to move through the plot. I wanted more for Gwen. Her job as a bridesmaid-for-hire meant she was constantly living out other peoples’ dreams, and I just wanted her to find her own peace and happiness.

Overall, I liked the premise and I loved the characters. Both Duncan and Gwen had their hearts guarded for a reason, and it might’ve taken a little fumbling, but they both found their happiness in the end. But for me, the pacing was off, and there was just too much time taken up in the plot that didn’t really matter in the end.

Waiting for a Girl Like You was a fun, summery read and took me away to the Amalfi Coast. The romance was solid, if a bit too slow burn at times, and I loved seeing Gwen and Duncan get their happily ever after in the end.

Very cute romance and a nice discovery, as I'd never read a book by Katie Delahanty.

Gwen is a professional bridesmaid and before reading this novel I had never thought about how being a bridesmaid could be a demanding "job" with really important qualities required, like handling "weird" relatives. On top of that Gwen has to successfully disappearing behind Rosie's character, the persona created by her boss.

And Gwen is a perfect Rosie. Until this wedding.

There is a love triangle between Ethan, the man Gwen has fantasized about since adolescence, and Duncan, the leader of the music group who plays at all the weddings with her.

it's a well-written story with great secondary characters who develop in the same direction: stand up for themselves, become the best version of themselves and impose their dreams on those around them so that they become reality.

The setting for Zoey's wedding is idyllic, the descriptions are subtle and make us want to go there too.

It’s been a while since I have laughed this hard! I adore this book. This is the first that I have read from this author but it certainly will not be the last.
Gwen aka Rosie is a “for hire” bridesmaid. Her job is to not only fill out that wedding party but to also look for that one relative that is going to destroy the couple’s perfect day. Personally she watched the band who has worked 28 weddings with her from afar. Specifically the lead singer Duncan. Duncan is a wedding singer who seems to have it all together including flirting with the bridesmaids. All of them except for Gwen.
What I loved about this story is the hot mess that Gwen is. Her past comes crashing in to the wedding she is the maid of honor for. When that past collides with her present, secrets are held close but kinda out in the open. When the secrets explode? Look out to all who are in attendance. Duncan is a true romantic when it comes to Gwen. Gwen is clueless when it comes to Duncan. Seeing how they navigate through this mess is heart swoony.

Lemony Secret

Our FMC is a bridesmaid for hire and has flown to more continental destinations than abroad. Pack your bags we are headed to Italy! Gwen IS the come back romcom mishap Princess but never the Queen. She’s loyal to her job NDA and the rules.

Rule 1: No flirting.
Rule 2: No one can know your real identity.
Rule 3: Nothing can get in the way of the bride’s perfect wedding.

No one said she couldn’t have a crush on the leader of the band…no Adam Sandler-Wedding Singer vibes. Duncan is a swoony Harry Styles-wedding singer and he’s on a mission to get the one girl he isn’t supposed to touch. Third-act tension and identity reveal is ——!

If you like complicated relationships, work romance, and destiny bringing two together you’ll love Katie’s take on the HEA wedding party romance trope. I sure did!

I just wish I had a hired ‘friend’ to keep my sanity with 350 guests and five parents! So many mishaps and last minute…oh well let’s roll with it.

Thank you xpressotours and Katie Delahnty for this amazing opportunity to review. I’m glad three years in the making was the best time for me to read your characters.

This was my first time reading a novel by Katie Delahanty, and I absolutely loved it. Waiting for a Girl Like You is a delightful rom-com set against the backdrop of a destination wedding on the Italian coast. The story follows Gwendoline Watson, a bridesmaid-for-hire, and Duncan Avila, the wedding singer, intertwining them in a series of humorous and heartwarming events.

I really loved the charming, picturesque descriptions of the Amalfi Coast in Italy embedded throughout the book. I felt like I was walking alongside the characters, enjoying the beautiful scenery—especially the lemons. The diverse cast of characters made the story even more engaging.

This book is perfect for fans of romantic comedies, and destination wedding stories, especially those who enjoy picturesque settings, and heartwarming relationships.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for the opportunity to read and review this delightful novel!

This was an unexpected book. It has subtle layers of grief that define the protagonist’s choices in life. Although the story begins with a woman playing the role of a maid of honour at a wedding, that’s a brutal efficiency to her actions.

A cat related emergency has her taking the same role almost immediately without much preparation. This puts her on direct contact with the band that plays all the weddings she works at. What happens next is predictable but still worth the read. There are small twists, ones that can take a reader by surprise based on how well they have guessed the characters’ personalities.

I enjoyed the trip and the romance felt like there was a solid build up to go as a good foundation.

I would definitely recommend it to fans of the genre.

I received an ARC thanks to Netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.

Gwen, the professional bridesmaid, was a highlight of the story. She’s fantastic at handling high-pressure situations all with a smile on her face. Watching her true self emerge throughout the book was a lot of fun and added a deeper layer to her character. She was relatable, likable, and just the right amount of quirky.

Duncan, on the other hand, kept his cards close to his chest for much of the book, which made it harder to get to know him initially. But as the story unfolded, I appreciated the way his character was revealed bit by bit, adding intrigue and depth to his role.

Overall, this was a well-written book with interesting characters who brought humor and charm to the narrative. While the beginning was a bit slow for me, the character development and the payoff made it worth the read.

Waiting for a book like this!

I read the Brightside trilogy back in 2016 & was a fan of Katie’s back then, instantly following her. When I got the notification that this book was coming out, I preordered it immediately. I am on vacation & just devoured this book in 1 day! Katie’s writing resonates with me. Her ability to immediately capture the reader’s attention in the first few paragraphs is a skill! I loved this story! Gwen, Duncan & the other characters were developed so well, I had a clear picture of each of them and the events that transpired. The storyline was unique & had me hooked! I read how long of a challenge this book was, but it was worth it to me because it will stay with me long after I’ve read it. That to me is the true sign of an amazing author & gifted storyteller!

Thank you for getting those big girl panties on and writing this book! I had been waiting for the third installment of your series, when I found your new website and the announcement of this book. I immediately preordered and devoured it. I love how your characters have insecurities and we can all follow along as they process and grow. This is not just another simple romance. You meet new friends and cry with their grief, wait with them in their Allora, and cheer at their accomplishments. There were many times while reading that I thought another writer would have wrapped this up or done it differently, but each time I was so excited there was more and if felt real. Thank you Katie!

This book was slow to start. At times, I felt like it was too descriptive, so I scanned sections. As the book progressed, I found it hard to put the book down. Gwen is perfect for her job as professional bridesmaid. She is awesome at putting out fires and preventing drunks from making a scene, all with a smile on her face. However, watching her true self start to show, was fun and drew people to her. Duncan kept things close to his chest, and it took a while to get to really know him. Overall, this was a well written book with characters that were interesting and funny (at times).

I totally fell for Duncan during this book! “waiting for a Girl Like You” was a fun rom com, with great character interactions, entertaining drama, and a gorgeous setting. I’ve never really thought about yacht rock, but dreamy week-long wedding festivities in Italy clearly demand a soothing, sway-ful soundtrack, and Delahanty delivers with both a swoony romance and a perfect playlist. Poor Gwen just can’t catch a break through the entire book, but the tension makes that happily ever after all the more sweet.

Such a fun book!

Gwen is a professional bridesmaid and she's headed to Italy to be in Zoey's wedding. We also meet Duncan, who's the ultimate wedding singer. And meet Ethan, whom Gwen used to idolize - and is the groom. It's fun to watch Gwen keep up with all the crazy wedding guests and their antics and see her falling in love. I enjoyed this story!

The character development Waiting For A Girl Like You sucked me in immediately! The main character is super relatable whether you want to call her Rosie or Gwen— not only that, but the side characters are very well developed as well. Add in the amazing Italian background where each location is described in such detail it felt like I could smell the lemons/pizza etc= amazing read. The storyline kept me coming back and thinking about the read long after I set it down. Such a fun one!

She signed up to be a bridesmaid… not to face her past!

Gwendoline takes a bridesmaid gig in Italy to fund her music writing dreams, only to find the groom is her first love. Adding to the chaos, charming wedding singer Duncan Avila makes it impossible to ignore what she truly wants in life and love.

The chemistry between Gwen and Duncan was sweet and effortless!!

Life keeps throwing Gwen unexpected challenges, yet each twist seems to guide her exactly where she is meant to be. Her character growth was one of the most rewarding aspects of the story, as she gradually finds her voice and confidence.

Watching her uncover her true passion and what truly makes her happy was so heartwarming!

If you love a gorgeous setting, and a heroine finding her way in life and love, this one belongs on your TBR.

This is a good book. The two characters are Gwen and Duncan. Gwen works for a wedding planner that has bridesmaids for hire. She helps the wedding to make sure there is no trouble. Duncan is in a band and the wedding singer. There is an attraction. Gwen thinks Duncan can sing so well that he draws you into the song. They start spending a lot of their off time together. They fall in love.
