A bloody love letter to New York City, The City Beneath Her Feet is an action/thriller love story for a new generation by lauded creators James Tynion IV (Spectregraph, Something is Killing the Children) and Elsa Charretier (Room Service, Love Everlasting).
Jasper Jayne was the girl of Zara's dreams, but their brief relationship came and went in such an intense blaze that Zara was left thinking Jasper was just that... a dream. Years later, Zara is thrust back into Jasper's world -- unknowingly listed as her emergency contact, Zara must piece together the mystery of Jasper's life, all while being hunted by the assassins who once called Jasper one of their own.
Prior to his first professional work, Tynion was a student of Scott Snyder's at Sarah Lawrence College. A few years later, he worked as for Vertigo as Fables editor Shelly Bond's intern. In late 2011, with DC deciding to give Batman (written by Snyder) a back up feature, Tynion was brought in by request of Snyder to script the back ups he had plotted. Tynion would later do the same with the Batman Annual #1, which was also co-plotted by Snyder. Beginning in September 2012, with DC's 0 issue month for the New 52, Tynion will be writing Talon, with art by Guillem March. In early 2013 it was announced that he'd take over writing duties for Red Hood and the Outlaws in April.
Tynion is also currently one of the writers in a rotating team in the weekly Batman Eternal series.
issue 1: I picked this up almost entirely because the art, and it absolutely delivers. Charretier is firing on all cylinders. Her art is lively and bustling. Huge props to Jordie Bellaire on colors as well. It's this perfect blend of muted and pop coloring. I've rarely seen a book look like this and I love it.
Storywise though... Manic pixie dream assassin girl meets anxious drunk novelist girl while bleeding out after a hit, and takes her home for lesbian sex. This reeks of "men writing women". And I haven't even gotten around to talking about bondage nun assassin girl ! She seems to be in kind of a mommy issue type relationship with manic pixie dream assassin girl.
I'll give this the benefit of the doubt though. The pitch is somewhat intriguing. Shame it's taking ages to come out though
issue 2: I'm not quite sure where this story is going, but I'll keep reading just for the art. The writing felt less exploitative this time around, he's giving real depth to these characters, but I'm not properly invested yet. I don't really know how he's planning on wrapping everything up in only a couple more issues, and not have it be very surface level, but I guess we'll find out whenever the rest drops
This is a review for the first issue. Great art style, interesting premise, and a veryy Atomic Blonde vibe. LGBT action comic that’s a love letter to New York City.
“The City Beneath Her Feet” is starting out with amazing art and a twist at the end that definitely sets up for a tale I want to read the next volume of.
Unfortunately, it looks like this one is dead. Did the publisher go under?
