Det oåtkomliga (1898) är Liane de Pougys första roman och har nu översatts till svenska för första gången. Översättningen är KG Johanssons och han har även skrivit efterordet om Liane de Pougys liv som kurtisan, prinsessa och helgon.

Josiane de Valneige cerca da sempre l’amore, è innamorata dell’amore, non c’è niente che l’animi davvero se non il sogno di una passione totalizzante, nelle cui fiamme immergersi senza timori per uscirne nuovi, purificati. In ogni uomo cerca la sua possibilità di essere felice, quella sensazione inafferrabile di completezza, in cui il mondo sembra scomparire dallo sfondo per rifiorire in noi. Ci sembra – anche se solo per un istante – di non aver più bisogno di nulla, se non di quella dolce sensazione di felicità, pienezza, gioia.

Josiane è una donna coraggiosa, che ha scelto di cambiare la propria vita pur sapendo quali conseguenze questa scelta avrebbe provocato, quale giudizio la società le avrebbe imposto. Senza pensarci due volte, si è lasciata alle spalle un comodo matrimonio borghese senza amore che la stava facendo appassire prima del tempo ed è approdata a Parigi in cerca di una vita vera, fatta di sfarzo, indipendenza, mondanità.

Non è una vita vuota la sua, però, fatta solo di scandali con cui i giornalisti possano riempire le pagine dei giornali. Josiane nasconde in sè – dietro una bella apparenza che può ingannare l’occhio più distratto – un’interiorità profonda e complessa, nella quale passioni violente e spontanee ingaggiano una dura lotta con la razionalità, che è spesso costretta a cedere di fronte a quel fuoco inestinguibile. Ogni amore le appare – almeno inizialmente – come quello definitivo, quello in grado di cambiarle la vita, il grande sentimento che anela da sempre, l’unica ragione per continuare ad esistere e sperare.

Cet ouvrage écrit par Liane de Pougy en 1895 et publié en 1898 et dédié à son ami Jean Lorrain est intéressant du fait qu'elle nous montre les relations que pouvait avoir une figure du Parisien mondain de la belle époque. Ces relations sont diverses et chacune d'entre elle à son degrès d'importance pour la protagonniste Josiane de Valneige qui est, de plus, sans cesse en quête d'un réel et durable bonheur en amour. Le roman autobiographique est structuré de manières épistolaire, Josiane de Valneige raconte ses relations amoureuses à son ami proche Jean Leblois. Le roman est intéressant dans l'ensemble et facile à lire de plus qu'on pourrait ajouter que c'est le premier roman de Mme de Pougy.

Fascinating little book about a courtesan's attempt at true love. It's a sad story, told in letters from the main character to one of her friends (and viceversa), and it's very interesting. Will look for more book by Liane de Pougy in the future.

Liane de Pougy was the adopted name of a lady born Anne-Marie Chassaigne. Her life was fascinating and relevant to this book. She was educated in convent school but ran away at 16 having become pregnant. She subsequently abandoned her husband and child, went to Paris and changed her name. Having become a courtesan, she was determined to live in style and have only the richest patrons. Aged 40 she married a minor Romanian prince and became Princess Ghika. She supported a convent in Savoy which supported disabled children and died as Sister Anne-Marie de la Penitence.

In Chasing the Dream (L'insaisissable) de Pougy writes as Josiane de Valneige, a courtesan who is young, beautiful and rich. Many wealthy men have been her lover and all offer her a life of luxury and great comfort. However she is deeply unhappy as she seeks true love. In each relationship she starts she hopes that this will be the time she can open her heart and love someone, but she finds true love always eludes her.

The novel was published in 1898 and is largely written as a series of letters by Madame de Valneige to a friend. I was surprised how moved I was by it. I suspect it was written very much from the heart and I'm very pleased to have spent a couple of afternoons in its company.

"A dire il vero, cosa c'è nella vita di più bello, se non la ricerca della felicità e dell'amore? Non c'è nulla che valga più di un bacio!". Breve romanzo epistolare che descrive le avventure sentimentali di una bella e ricca cortigiana alla ricerca della felicità. Liane de Pougy è una donna da riscoprire.
