Suki Brennan is broke. After she co-signed several hefty loans for her ex’s business, he fled the country and left her working two jobs to pay his bills.
So when her new boss, a sulky pro hockey player who recently became the guardian of his three nieces, proposes a deal to help him secure permanent custody of the girls, she agrees.
If Suki fake marries Carter Stanton for one year, and pretends to be his doting wife, she’ll get half a million dollars and a clean divorce at the end. Not only will the money pay off all her debts, she’ll be able to help the girls she already adores settle fully into their new lives.
It’s a foolproof plan. At least, it seems like it. As Suki grows closer to Carter and his nieces, though, her feelings for them become very real. But does her brooding boss feel the same?

the setup… Suki Brennan is working two jobs just to barely stay afloat. She unwisely invested in her dirtbag ex-boyfriend’s new venture by co-signing on the loans. Now he’s left the country and literally left her holding the financial bags. One of those jobs is as a nanny to the three young nieces of grumpy pro hockey player Carter Stanton. He became their guardian with the recent sudden death of his older sister and is struggling in his fatherhood role. They love Suki and she’s wonderful with them. So, when their deadbeat father threatens the custody arrangement, Carter makes Suki an offer to marry him (and make it look real) to ensure he keeps his nieces.
the heart of the story… I knew I’d like this story but was wonderfully surprised to end up loving it! You’d think it might have been a bit predictable but when you add in a micro pig named Darling as a pet, three grief stricken little girls and Suki’s fabulous best friends, all bets are off on that front. I liked Suki, a lot, despite her bad judgment with men. Her affection for the girls is genuine and she has experience with the loss of a parent. Despite Carter’s broody behavior, his heart was always in the right space and was open to being better.
the bottom line… This was such a good time and the real romance that developed between Suki and Carter was natural and paced perfectly. Darling the pig was a scene stealer of course and there were heartwarming moments involving the girls who all experienced their grief differently. It’s well written and I’m definitely in for the rest of the series.
Thank you, @hambright_pr and @brendarothert, for this ARC.
Falling for the Forward is the first book I’ve read by Brenda Rothert. It is a short but sweet sports romance with some sprinkles of spice. I loved Suki and Carter, as well as the family elements, the most. Carter becomes the guardian of his three nieces after his sister passes away, and their father is not in the picture. Suki is their nanny during the week and is the family’s missing piece to help heal.
Read this book if you enjoy: -Sports romance -Hockey romance -Single Dad/Uncle -Marriage of convenience -Grumpy/sunshine -Only one bed -Found family -Great friend group -Nieces you will be obsessed with -Handsome but not-so micro pig
This was a super fast paced book, I literally finished it in one day! So much was happening and the major plot conflict and resolution happened super quickly, but I will say it felt like the book was almost to the point of missing pieces. It just felt super rushed.
I will say, though, the characters were very likeable and engaging. Their individuals roles were fast paced and constantly making moves, which really made me continue reading. And I also loved the relationship building - it was beautiful to see that main characters fall in real love with one another despite their start.
This isn’t my favourite Brenda Rotherts book nut still I’m glad I read it.
Carter is our hero. He’s a forward for an NHL hockey team. Just recently his sister has passed away and he has become the guardian of her three young daughters. Sukiyaki is our heroine.and she is working as the nanny for the girls. Carter gets wind that the girls father is going for custody. But he hasn’t seen them since the youngest one was just a tiny baby. He hasn’t been in touch with them ar all and hasn’t been paying any kind of child support.
Though Carter comes across as somewhat closed off, he does love his nieces and his sister wanted him as their guardian. In desperation he asks Sukiyaki, who adores her charges, if she will marry him for the period of one year and she agrees. She begins to see past his rather distant personality and feelings begin to develop between the two.
One of the issues keeping this from a higher grade is I just didn’t really feel the attraction between the two. It was more of a tell than a show and having read pretty much all of Ms. Rotherts previous books, I know she can write great passionate love but I didn’t feel it in this one.
I was also kind of disappointed with how little there was of the actual hockey in this book. She really understands the game of hockey which is important to me in a sports romance. The book is quite short and if she were to ask me, I would suggest she lengthen the books and add more substance. Less isn’t necessarily more.
Thank you to Hambright PR and the author for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
This was my first book by Brenda, and I really liked her writing style, so many parts had me LOLing.
The book starts off with a bang, when Suki’s lying ex has not only left her, but left her with a mountain of debt and boxes of sex toys for his bogus business. Carter is a professional hockey player who has just gained custody of his three nieces after his sister passes away. These two couldn’t be more opposite, she’s all sunshine, and he’s so grumpy he hides in the bathroom for 15 minutes every morning to avoid his life. But they couldn’t be more perfect for each other, them being opposites is what really draws them together. Suki starts as their nanny, but soon agrees to a fake marriage so the court will award Carter full custody of the girls; and he will pay Suki enough money to pay off all the debt her ex left her with. But before we know it things start to feel real in this fake marriage, and feelings are getting harder to ignore. I do feel like towards the end both Suki and Carter could have both been better at communicating their feelings to each other.
I also loved getting to know all three of Carters niece’s and their personalities, especially because they play such a big part in their love story. And I can’t end my review without mentioning the adorable pig Darling who quite literally stole the show! If you’re looking for a fun, sweet, and spicy hockey romance definitely pick this one up!

When I saw Brenda's new book is coming this year, I signed up for the review opportunity immediately. I meant, it had been 6, almost 7 years since I last read her book and I still remembered how much I adored her writing. Gladly, this book did not disappoint and I couldn't wait to pick up whatever she had in store for us. The family dynamic in Falling for the Forward was amazing and heartfelt. There was so much love from Uncle Carter, nanny-turned-fake-wife Suki, and Carter's three nieces. Oh, and let's not forget their pet pig, which honestly was the cherry on top in this lovely story. The only thing I wish could be better was for this book to be LONGER. I didn't realize it was less than 200 pages and I pretty much devoured it in a sitting, only to be left craving for more detailed scenes and background story of the main characters. All in all, Falling for the Forward was a quick and light-hearted read for all romance lovers so quit hesitating and go add it to your TBR!
***Thanks to the author and Hambright PR for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.***
••••••• Let me preface this review by saying the quality of writing is top notch from the author. Just like a plot or characters can make or break a story (as you’ll see in a min) so can the writing style. But sometimes the writing itself can save a story, and that’s the case here.
At first I really liked Suki and wasn’t a fan of Carter. By the end I really liked Carter and wasn’t a fan of Suki. Don’t get me wrong, Carter had many flaws, but Suki just felt…selfish—which was a strange thing to feel about her because she was so selfless. That’s why I just couldn’t fully connect with these two. Because there was a huge disconnect.
This story was novella in length but packed quite a punch. That alone should be celebrated. But we actually SEE so much relationship development happening on page and then BAM, Suki is a grade-A ‘B’ and that hurt the story for me.
Five stars goes to the girls and Darling. And Suki’s group of friends. That’s why this one was so hard to rate. I REALLY liked the side characters and their arcs, but Suki—that girl just ruined it for me…and that’s OKAY.

Falling for the forward is a contemporary romance novel with tropes of fake marriage, forced proximity and grumpy x sunshine.
The story follows Suki who is burdened with payment of loans of co- partner business with her now runaway boyfriend. Working as a nanny to three adorable children is definitely a highlight of her day. Their guardian is a pro hockey player and is currently facing a legal situation where he could lose the guardianship of his three nieces.
Carter proposes a deal to Suki. A marriage contract where both parties will benefit equally. Suki needs the money and Carter needs to show security and stability to the court, it's a win - win situation. However along the line of faking it something begins to change. Will they both realize that maybe romance has finally started to show up in their lives?
This was a great read. I absolutely adore the characters especially the three kids. Suki was an amazing character and her love and dedication towards them was unfathomable. And Carter, well that man is charming and definitely a perfect match for Suki. I read this book in a single sitting because I couldn't get enough of their dynamics. There were tons of hilarious dialogues. The narration pacing was good and I am happy with conclusion.
If you love hockey romance with swoon worthy romance and passion then this book is definitely for you.
Oh how I loveeeee a hockey romance ESPECIALLY if there is a fake relationship thrown into the mix. I really loved the premise of why a fake marriage was necessary to this story and I loved those little girls as much as Suki did.
Their dynamic with Suki and watching Carter soften to them & grow comfortable with becoming their parent was hands down my favorite part of this book.
As for the romance, I swear these two were in love with each other at first sight and they didn’t even realize it. I was just waiting for them to figure it out for over half the book 😅 the pet pig was such an adorable addition the cast of characters and I loved that the girls named him Darling. 🥰
I did feel like some plot points were rushed for the sake of keeping the book shorter, I would have loved seeing Carter and Suki realize their feelings for each other through more scenes of them by themselves, on more dates or more from their “honeymoon.” I also was not very big on Carter’s reaction to Suki in the third act conflict, I didn’t think she said anything wrong, but he obviously redeemed himself by the end and this was a really sweet & entertaining read!! I’m looking forward to reading more from this author now that I’ve been introduced to her writing.
This was my first book by Brenda Rothert and definitely won't be my last! If you are looking for a low angst, single guardian hockey romance, then look no further!
🏒Single guardian 🏒Hockey romance 🏒Nanny romance 🏒Fake marriage
When Carter's sister unexpectedly passes away, he is left with the guardianship of his three nieces. He is a professional hockey player and knows that he will need help. Which brings us to Suki, who becomes the girls nanny and eventually so much more when Carter finds himself in a situation that he needs a fake wife.
Suki and Carter's relationship is definitely a very slow burn, but worth every minute that you get to see them fall in love. Suki is a light of sunshine, while Carter is grumpy and not used to change. These two couldn't be more opposite, but you can tell just how much they are meant to be.
Thank you to the author and Hambright PR for the advanced copy!
Overall, this was a cute story. You’ve got a grumpy hockey player who has custody of his three young nieces, and then you’ve got their nanny who is a total sweetheart. Then there’s marriage of convenience, which is quickly becoming a favourite trope of mine. Throw in a pet pig named Darling and you’re good to go!
I liked the chemistry between Suki and Carter, and I liked the story of their romance a lot. The backstories were interesting and had me invested. It was a quick and enjoyable read.
I did feel that the book was too rushed. I wanted so much more detail about the characters and the custody situation with the girls. I think the rushed feeling sometimes led to scenes that were a little awkwardly paced.
In saying that, I still plan on reading more by this author and would recommend this one if you’re in the mood for a quick romcom.
Thank you to the author and Hambright PR for my gifted copy!
This novella was exactly what I needed! I picked this novella up because the tropes really called to me, and I’m glad I did because This was such a sweet read that I finished in less than 24hrs! I don’t know what it is about hockey romances but I feel like they always hit, no matter what! 🤭 the tropes for this book was perfect and I really enjoyed how they were included in the story! I am a sucker for nanny/single guardian (he’s the uncle with custody of his nieces in this case) romances!
I loved the characters in this book, especially Suki! She was the definition of a sunshine character, and I loved seeing her positivity and outlook on life despite what had happened to her with her ex. I also loved how she called Carter out, and her relationship with the girls. As for Carter, he was such a grump and I liked him! He was a good guardian despite not believing so, and always had the girls best interest at heart. He frustrated me a little at the end of the book but overall, I really enjoyed him and Suki together! They were such a great grumpy/sunshine pairing!
I would have liked this book to be longer because I was invested in these characters, but it was perfect for a novella! I’m excited to see the rest of the series as I really liked the side characters and I’m excited to read more about them in the future!
If you’re looking for a short and sweet novella that has: 💖 She's the nanny 🏒 Grumpy x sunshine 💖 Fake marriage 🏒 Single guardian 💖 Forced proximity This book is definitely for you!
Thank you Brenda Rother and Hamburg PR for this book! Out now! 🫶
After the unexpected passing of his sister, Carter is given temporary custody of his three nieces. Due to being a professional hockey player and on the road, he hires Suki as a nanny to help.
In order for him, to be granted permanent custody he needs to show the court that his home is the most stable environment for the children. His attorney suggests an home filled with family and not hired Nannies is the best way to show stability.
What better way to show stability than to have Suki and Carter marry. The kids and her love each other and she has been such a great support to them after losing their mom.
💙 Sports Romance 🤍 Nanny x Pro Hockey player 💙 Fake Marriage 🤍 Forced Proximity 💙 “My wife”
Thank you to Hambright Pr and Brenda for the arc!!
This hockey romance was different in a refreshing way. It had a few of my fav tropes⬇️
-hockey romance -boss X nanny -single dad -fake relationship -found family -marriage of convenience
The mmc is tragically left to take care of his niece and desperately needs a nanny. The fmc is down on her lucky and really needs a good job. Thus gets hired by the mmc (Carter). After certain circumstances, they both agree to get married. It’s all suppose to be fake right ? But their feelings towards each other start to get pretty complicated. Especially when suki starts getting attached to Carter’s nieces.
I truly enjoyed this book. It had lots of laughs and a lot of swoon worthy moments.
**ARC REVIEW** Falling For The Forward is book #1 in the Love On The Line series by Brenda Rothert!
My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spicy rating: 🔥🔥
You are going to enjoy this one if you love these tropes :) 🏒 Single Guardian 🏒 Hockey Romance 🏒 She's His Nanny 🏒 Marriage of Convenience 🏒 Slow Burn 🏒 Grumpy MMC
This was my first Brenda novel and you guys IT WAS SO GOOD!
Now this wasn't the spiciest book but I just adore the story of Carter and Suki sooo much!
Carter is a hockey player who has just taken on his sisters three children following her death.
He genuinely doesn't know what he is doing but what he does know is that he loves those kids and doesn't want them to go live with their absent dad.
When his lawyer lets him know that he needs a more stable environment for the kids, he throws out a crazy idea to Suki the nanny that they get married. She says yes as she is in a lot of debt due to her ex and Carter is offering to pay her alot of money.
I am such a sucker for a marriage of convenience trope and Brenda delivered an amazing book!
Also this isnt a spoiler exactly but I died when one of girls cut her own hair and it ended up being a mess and reminded me of when I was 8 and tried to cut my own fringe! I died lol
p.s BRB going to buy myself a pet pig LOL
Overall, an AMAZING book and so excited to read book #2 in this series. Thanks Brenda and Hambright PR for kindly sending me an arc to read and review. This review is my own honest opinion on the book.
Fun, flirty Hockey player story. You are suddenly in charge of your three nieces when your sister passes unexpectedly. Trying to adjust to life with them, and your Hockey schedule, and having a nanny. Join in their lives, when their birth dad decides to want custody of them, when he hasn't been in the picture since youngest was a baby. Beautiful story ❤️
Falling for the Forward - a quick, cute, funny, feel-good romance that had me smiling the whole way through! Suki is the kind of heroine you can’t help but root for, and Carter? Total grump-turned-boy down bad. Watching them navigate their totally foolproof marriage of convenience (lol) while caring for his three nieces was both heartwarming and hilarious.
If you love lighthearted rom-coms with just the right amount of swoon, sass, found family vibes, at just under 200 pages, Falling for the Forward is a must-read!
Fake marriage Grumpy-sunshine Adorable kids Laugh-out-loud banter
This was such a fun and quick read! I was lucky enough to receive this as an ARC and I absolutely devoured it. Book contains single dad, forced proximity, friends to lovers, nanny, oh and hockey! What could be more fun than putting all of these tropes together!? I cannot wait to see what Brenda releases next!
Thank you to Brenda Rothert and @hambright_pr for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
This was a super easy read, but it needed…more. I didn’t feel the connection between these two. And I think the book being less than 200 pages had a lot to do with that. It went from nanny and boss to married so quickly. And even though we know the basis of these fake relationships are BS in these romances, I usually eat them up...but not this one.
The relationships I really enjoyed in this book were Suki’s with the girls. They were so sweet with one another, and I loved how Suki allowed the girls to grieve. She never pushed them to move past their mother's death just because their grief made her uncomfortable, and she made sure to talk to them about their mom. To let them know she'd be there if they needed/wanted someone to talk to.
I wish I could have loved this one. I think it just needed a little bit more meat to it.
Falling for the Forward did not feel like a novella. From the kids to the fake marriage and to the ending, it felt like a whole novel. The story was deep and emotional and it made me tear up.
I was gifted the arc by Brenda and Hambright and I’m sad that I took so long to read it. This is a perfect romance book when you need a quick read or change of pace. 100% recommend!

Falling for the Forward de Brenda Rothert Serie Love on the line libro 1
Argumento:
Suki is broke. Her ex boyfriend Tyler convinced her to co-sign a loan for his brilliant business idea, and when it didn’t work out, he left her and left her with the debt. Now she’s working two jobs just to be able to make the loan payments. One of those jobs is a nanny for a hockey star, Carter. He has temporary custody of his three nieces as their mother, his sister Rachel, suddenly passed away. Unfortunately, however, their father, who has never been in the picture, is fighting for custody because he wants Rachel’s life insurance money. Carter proposes to Suki so that he can get full permanent custody of the girls and Suki agrees because she needs the money that Carter is going to pay her. He’s broody, but she loves the girls. This is foolproof, right?
This is so sweet and so cute. Yes, Carter is broody but I knew right away that deep down he had such a sweet and vulnerable side. There were moments in this book that really touched my heart so much that I cried. It’s not easy for a single man to willingly take in three girls, and then to fight for them? To do whatever he has to to make sure he gets to keep them? Nevermind the romance part of it, push Suki aside! I wanted a piece of Carter just for that very reason! Then he adopts a pet for them and man, it’s a fun time. Darling, the name of the pet, stole the show so many times.
Suki is such a lovable character too. She’s sweet and fits in with Carter and the girls perfectly. I love that she always knew how to handle the delicate moments when the girls brought up their mother and how she tried so hard to make things extra special for them because she knew things were hard for them.
There really is so much to love about this book. Another aspect of the book I loved is that even though it’s a nanny trope, it’s done SO differently. It’s not the typical sleep with the nanny trope. They actually get to know each other before there is any physical intimacy. They genuinely care for each other before all of that happens. It makes the buildup to the intimacy so much better, and the intimacy actually mean something rather than there be spice for the sake of spice.
This is a new to me author, but I’m going to be making sure to read other books by this author. Romance readers, get your hands on this one now!
𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁: I loved the family dynamic of this book and getting to know not only the MCs but also the nieces and best friends group. I don’t always love the nanny angle but this was done well and I love how FMC had no interest in MMC and he has to work for it. This book was grumpy vs sunshine done right! Definitely check this one out.
Suki was burned in her last relationship and it landed her with 180k of debt and a lose of faith in men. She works two jobs to keep up with the loan payments but she is barely treading water. One of her jobs is working as a Nanny to three adorable girls who lost their mom suddenly and are now living with their Uncle. The Uncle: Carter, is a major grouch and she’s happy she has little interaction with him. Those 3 girls however she would do anything for.
Carter was happy, he was single and living his dream of playing in the NHL. But life got turned upside down when his sister passed in her sleep and left him the guardian of her three daughters. He doesn’t know how to do this: navigating grief, parenting and being a girl dad was never his life plan. Plus he just found out their dead beat dad wants custody so he can get his hands on his sister’s life insurance policy. Hell No! He would marry the nanny before he lets anyone take these girls from him.
Carter does just that he gives Suki 500k to marry him for the year or two so he can move forward with the adoption to the girls. The problem is Carter starts to fall for Suki and she has made it very clear she’s here only for the girls.
This is a fast read I promise you’ll devour come see how it all unfolds and if Carter wins custody and Suki’s heart.

Falling for the Forward is a quick, cute read! With a cast of lovable characters and a pig. No really. A pig 🐷😂
Suki Brennan is in oodles of debt thanks to her ex-boyfriend and his organic sex toy business idea. When he abandoned her with the business and the debt, Suki vowed to never fall in love like that again. To pay the debt off, she takes a job as a nanny for Carter Stanton, NHL forward for the Cleveland Crush. Carter recently became the guardian of his three nieces, after his sister tragically died. With their deadbeat father threatening to sue for full custody, Carter is advised to provide the most stable environment he can. And what is more stable than being a married man? After offering Suki $500k to fake a marriage, she accepts his proposal and they get married, but it’s only until after the girls can be officially adopted. Besides, it’s just a marriage of convenience. There’s no feelings involved… right?
So this book was a delight. Suki is such a kind and thoughtful character. She’s hardworking and endearing and I just feel like we would be friends. She does get a little too into her head towards the end of the book but it all works out. Carter has good intentions, even if he’s kinda gruff. He is straightforward but cares deeply for his girls and Suki. (And the pig, I guess. Idk.🤷🏻♀️)
The kids are adorable and Darling, the pig, was a surprisingly fun character. I was a bit turned off by the pig originally but Darling and his antics are hilarious and it was sweet reading how the kids interacted with him!
The plot was fast and fun and a great read for a lazy Wednesday evening! This is definitely a book you could hammer out in a night and I loved that 💖
Definitely recommended if you love 💖 Marriages of convenience 🐷 Nanny x Boss relationship 💖 Grumpy x sunshine 🐷 Adorable kids 💖 Hockey romances 🐷 Pet pigs named Darling 😂
Thank you so much to Hambright PR and Brenda Rothert for providing me with an eARC in exchange for my honest review!
My favorite character in this whole story was Darling the micro pig and I WILL NOT apologise for that ! 🥹
This book had SO MUCH potential. It wasn’t bad, at all. It was just too rushed for me. It’s novella length…but I feel personally that there was a lot more than needed to be said. It definitely could have been a lengthier story and it would have flowed better.
We meet Suki…a girl with TERRIBLE judgement when it comes to men, evident by the fact that her ex has left the country and leaves her holding the bag for all the loans he took out in her name 🥲
Carter…grumpy forward in the NHL. Has become a “dad” to his 3 nieces after the passing of his older sister. AND! Proud micro pig dad to Darling 🥰
As you can guess…Suki becomes his nanny. I’ll say this. In the beginning, wasn’t a huge fan of Carter. He was just…beyond grumpy to the point of being an a$$hole€. And Suki was the loveable FMC that you wanted to protect and shake for her bad choices in men.
When the dumb baby daddy of the nieces comes back wanting custody (because of course he does 🙄) Carter ask Suki to marry him for 1 year. She will get money to pay her debts and he can prove he has a stable home for his nieces. Obviously they agree and you can guess what happens after that.
By the end of the book I really really loved Carter…but Suki really showed her a$$ (my opinion) she showed some really selfish qualities and at times was a raging B. Which…girl…no. The relationship they developed for me just didn’t gel. They really turned out to be very polar opposites in some important areas. And that just made it all less believable for me.
ALSO…just my opinion. I feel like this could have worked better as a small town romance. Other than Carter playing hockey, there was nothing hockey about this.
It’s a quick cute read though if you need a palate cleanser. Again. These are just MY OPINIONS. Read it if you want. You may LOVE IT 💙

📚Falling for the Forward: Love on the Line #1 🖋Author ~ Brenda Rothert 🖋Features: A Fake Marriage Hockey Romance ⭐️Rating: 5/5
Suki Brennan is the unfortunate co-owner of Naughty by Nature. Left holding all the inventory from her ex’s failed business, Suki works two jobs to pay off the bank loans.
Carter Santon isn’t much on sharing his emotions. He’s better putting his energy into his pro-hockey career. Becoming the sole guardian for his 3 nieces wasn’t something he’d ever envisioned.
But there is no way Carter will let anyone else care for his sister’s children, not even their father. While Carter knows the guy is only interested in the life insurance he thinks the girls have inherited, he still has to prove that he’s the better guardian. Not some guy who’s never shown any interest in the children.
💍To keep his family together, Carter will have to convince Suki to play house with him. Together, they will have to pull off the perfect marriage. Between pretend wedding rings and a ginormous pet pig, Falling for the Forward is a fantastic read with lots of good times and humor!

LFalling for the Forward by Brenda Rothert is a heartwarming, yet at times emotionally charged read that hits all the right notes for fans of romance with a touch of drama. Suki Brennan is struggling with debt, working multiple jobs to clean up the mess left by her ex, and the last thing she expects is to be roped into a fake marriage with her brooding, hockey-playing boss, Carter Stanton. What I loved about this book was how quickly I got swept up in the grumpy x sunshine dynamic between Carter and Suki. He’s a gruff, no-nonsense pro hockey player who’s suddenly thrust into the role of a single guardian to three nieces, while Suki’s warmth and kindness shine through as she takes on the nanny role. The forced proximity of their living situation and the growing tension between them made for such an addicting read. Plus, watching Suki fall for the three girls (who are adorable) made me smile throughout the whole story. That being said, there were a few aspects of the story that might not sit well with everyone. The fake marriage trope is one of my favorites, but it can sometimes feel a bit predictable, and there were moments in the story where things felt a little too perfect or easy, especially when it came to the resolution of their issues. Still, I couldn’t help but root for Carter and Suki as they navigated their complicated feelings. The combination of romance, the bond between the characters, and the emotional stakes definitely kept me hooked, but if you're not a fan of slow burn or a bit of predictability, it might not be for you. Overall, I definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for a sweet, heartwarming romance with a perfect mix of tension and tenderness!
A Fake Marriage, a Broody Hockey Player, and a Scene-Stealing Pig—What’s Not to Love?
Marriage-of-convenience is one of my absolute favorite tropes, so this story had me hooked from the start! Suki and Carter’s fake marriage setup is the perfect mix of tension, slow-burn romance, and emotional stakes, making this such a fun and engaging read.
Carter is the ultimate brooding male main character—grumpy, guarded, but with a heart of gold, especially when it comes to his three nieces (even if his emotional intelligence is lacking). Suki, on the other hand, is warm, caring, and fiercely determined to give the girls the stability they deserve. Her bond with them is one of my favorite parts of the book, and I was fully invested in Carter seeking full custody.
This was my first sports romance, and I absolutely loved the element of Carter being a professional hockey player. From his demanding schedule to his friendships with teammates, it added an extra layer of depth to the story and made Cater and Suki's relationship feel even more complicated on top of the emotional baggage they each bring from past relationships.
The side characters and friends bring so much life to the story, but let’s be honest—Darling the pig steals the show! Every time Darling appeared, I couldn’t help but laugh.
The pacing is fast, and the short chapters made it easy to fly through in one sitting. And for such a short book, it really packs in a lot—romance, humor, heartfelt moments, and even some emotional depth. The ending ties everything up in a satisfying way, leaving no loose ends.
If you love fake marriage, broody heroes, and a book that balances heartfelt moments with laugh-out-loud humor, this one is definitely worth picking up!
I received a digital copy of this book from a Goodreads Giveaway. All opinions are my own.
This book scores a solid four stars from me! As a lover of the fake dating trope, I was immediately hooked, and the author delivered on all the heartwarming feels I was craving. The grumpy/sunshine dynamic between Suki and Carter was utterly charming, and their chemistry soon sizzled off the page. I also really liked the found family aspect of the story as Suki and Carter's relationship developed with each other and with the girls. Suki's friends sound like an absolute blast too, the kind of friends you'd instantly want in your own inner circle. Watching Carter's relationship with his nieces blossom was pure sweetness and added a lovely layer of depth to his character. The hurt/comfort element with Suki's past hurt and Carter being there to support her was well-handled and provided some genuinely touching moments.
The dreaded third-act breakup reared its ugly head however, and honestly, it felt completely unnecessary and contrived. It came out of nowhere and left me feeling more frustrated than emotionally invested. Suki’s subsequent huffiness also grated on my nerves. This, unfortunately, cost the book a star from me.
Despite this, the satisfying happily ever after definitely redeemed things somewhat. The author has a knack for creating engaging characters and crafting a compelling narrative. I'm already eager to read more from her, and the hints about Bash's story being next have me especially excited.
If you're a fan of fake dating, grumpy heroes, and found family, this is definitely a book you should add to your TBR – just be prepared for a frustrating bump in the road before you reach your happy ending.
Suki’s life isn’t exactly what she hoped for. After co-signing a series of loans for her ex, who bailed on her and left her to foot the bill, she’s working two jobs to keep herself afloat. So when Carter Stanton, a grumpy pro hockey player, offers her a deal she can’t refuse, it feels like the break she needs. Carter needs a “wife” to secure custody of his three nieces after their mother’s tragic passing. Suki agrees to fake marry him for one year in exchange for half a million dollars to pay off her debts. It’s a simple arrangement: act the part of a loving wife, get paid, and help the girls adjust to their new life. But as Suki spends more time with Carter and the girls, her feelings for them all start to grow—and fast. This book hits all the right notes. The close proximity and fake marriage tropes are executed perfectly, with the added bonus of Carter being this stoic, emotionally guarded man slowly falling for the sunshine that is Suki. Their chemistry is palpable, and the girls they care for add so much heart to the story. I couldn’t help but laugh at their antics, especially the youngest niece, who had some of the best lines. Suki is incredibly easy to root for—her love for the girls is undeniable, and you can feel her struggle to not fall for the family she’s getting so close to. Carter, though grumpy at times, is a great match for her, and the way he begins to open up to her is swoon-worthy. This book isn’t just about romance; it’s also about family, healing, and the unexpected things life throws at you.
