I used to call this book "Tailoring for Dummies" . It is simplified for anyone with any period cutting experience and the shapes are correct. I would highly recommend this reference book for any new theatre cutters.
Men's Garments, 1830-1900: A Guide to Pattern Cutting and Tailoringby R. I. Davis is a helpful guide to drafting and tailoring your own men's garments of the middle and later nineteenth century.
The author gives you general patterns for many fashionable men's coats, jackets, vests, and trousers, with instructions on how to draft your own patterns, which you will have to do since you can't use these as they are. He also includes general instructions for making the patterns up. There are some very clear and useful old fashion plates of men's suits.
This is not a book for beginners, although it is clear enough that with a little experience and maybe a modern book on tailoring at hand, one can do a pretty good job of getting a start on Victorian men's suits.
