4.4 stars.
You’re kidding. You’re telling me Hook has tentacles, and never once did he use them on Wendy?! That’s. That’s just wrong.
*sigh*
Still. I liked the book.
I’m always, always partial to a psycho, bloodthirsty FMC. Even better when they’re more psycho than the MMC.
It’s just too much fun.

This is one of my favorite books, though it needed a little bit of work

Roses - One of the hottest spice writings ive read. Def a favourite. it was jaw dropping. Their banter One of the hottest spice writings ive read. Def a favourite. It was jaw dropping. Their banter was fun to read. Their scenes together had me at the edge of my seat and made me drop my jaw several times. The female lead was fun to read because shes actually psycho and not just doing evil things like the ML just because. The darling connections were fun to read. I wish it was written more about their pasts and families. There was lgbtq and poc rep. The female lead was funny. I loved the Mulan trope and wish it went on a bit further. When it was revealed she was a woman it was baddass. The way the ML is described to look at her made me feral. He was obsessed with her and the writer didnt make it in a meaningless sexual way as a lot of writers do. It was her. Her smile. Etc. Obsessed with how obsessed he was and how she was in return.

Cons- Some of their bantering during fights went on and on that it seemed like they were standing still instead of fighting. One of the smut scenes he called her a bad little girl. Which is gross to call someone a little girl as you are boning them. There were only 2 smut scenes and i wish there were more. But on the second smut scene the FML wakes the ML up by a blowie. Which is SA because he was not awake. Even though he was happy with it. - The build up of their relationship is good until they get separated. And then its suddenly in love in the most intense way, when we only had a handful of interactions between them. I would have loved more fillers bewteen then to see them build into a love. They only had like one real honest conversation to get to know eachother before then (and also one hook up) before this happens and suddenly they are in love. It would have made their separation more meaningful. The FML is human and gets injured in all these horrible ways, but is always able to fight and she always wins. Even against people that the ML (a monster) couldn't beat. She beats them in her worst shape. She beats a literal god. And she beats a fortress of people who have been doing that for decades while shes severaly injured and can barely walk. With half assed plans. It made me roll my eyes harder than hook made wendy's roll. And she was dumb with no survival instinct, as the ML struggled witnessing. She had such a ego, if she did not have plot armor she would have died way before even seeing her sister. The book never really talks about why the ML is part fish and cant die. He never went after the god to try to save her even tho he could have yet hes supposed to be obsessed. Disappointed he didnt jump in after her. And some of the character interations felt unnatrual. Like the sisters. After being kidnapped and planned to be murdered, her first thought is her sister should bang her would be murderer. The new woman the ML met also felt unnatural, just to advance the couple and be a sounding board. The FML forgave him way too fast. Never mess with a darling? She forgot he was going to murder her sister just for some dick. I genuinely could not get into the ML when he murdered innocent good women every month in an awful way. I know hes supposed to be a villian, but he could have chosen bad people to sacrifice and still been a villian but not a bad guy. We are supposed to root for him and not Pan, who fought for and died trying to save an innocent young girl. Yet he has the audacity to drown in his grief when thats what he made families feel every month. Im glad the female lead was a girls girl and was putting a stop to that even though its her lover. I wish it was written he chose pedophiles or human traffickers instead of random girls on the street. It would have been still a villain but not a hateable guy. How did the FML survive being in close contact where 2 grenades going off in what i assume was deep in the ocean - and somehow wash up on land. The very land the ML has ties to. And the ml didnt even have to sacrifice women, he could have chosen any other profession that was not on the ocean where the god could attack him.The plot did not explain what the collection was for or what happened to the people that were chosen. Or why. The enemy was defeated too easy and fasted by severaly injured humans that could barely walk. Also confused about the era. Nothing is modern but then theres an electrical rod plugged into the wall which threw me for a loop. And grenades. Bit confused about the world building. Love the mulan trope but confused how they didnt know she was a woman with just her being tall.
I didnt think highly of the ML crewing with misogynistic and homophobic ppl. Where the FML excuted them right away even as a villian. If this ship is so infamous and deadly how was it that easy for the FML to crew it as a stranger. The ending was never resolved. The sea god was still there. And it seemed like hook killed her step sister and burned her town where her family lives. That plot was just dropped and never told to her. I feel like thr story needed to be longer and not just focused on the 2 of them oogling each other. Some of the FMLs quirkiness in dialogues went on and on in the start and it gave vibes of im not like other girls. Also the MLS tentacles were never really used on wendy, even though it seemed to be leading up to that. His monster side wasn't really explored. And if he can't die, what happens when wendy eventually does

Holy Smokes. Pirate books are about as low as it gets on my TBR list. For some reason it just does't seem appealing. I am at a stand still in a series and nothing I tried appealed. I remembered that I had marked this after seeing the authors talk about it and decided to go for it.
The MC is UNHINGED. I loved her. Split POV between her and the villian and he is a bit unhinged as well TBH Total chemistry between the two and a big adventure. I went and looked up all the other books these ladies have written. I am really glad I picked this one up.

Amazing!

I really dislike fairytale retellings, but I do like Leighs books so decided to give it a try. Probably the only book I've really enjoyed in months! Really well written, I love Wendy and Hooks characters. The inner monologue is hilarious!

Great take on this story without sticking too close to the original that it comes across as creepy, which is why I normally avoid retellings.

Great read!

So much fun!

Two morally grey characters, pirates, adventure, duels, a sea monster and a curse, this was a really fun book to read! It was well written and the spice level high, Wendy just as unhinged as Hook - I recommend!

I really wanted to love this... I very much liked it but there were times where it was a little repetitive while others things came out of left field. I loved that Wendy is not a basic b fmc.

Sometimes you just want to read a book that doesn't take itself seriously and is balls-to-the-wall foolishness.

And for Captain Hook to be a sexy, cursed octopus-man...thing.

I honestly wished it was longer to add more details to the plot and explain more. It was a good read tho.
