USA Today and Amazon #1 Bestseller M. L. “Matt” Buchman started writing on a flight south from Japan to ride his bicycle across the Australian Outback. Just part of a solo around-the-world trip that ultimately launched his writing career.

From the very beginning, his powerful female heroines insisted on putting character first, then a great adventure. He’s since written over 60 action-adventure thrillers and military romantic suspense novels. And just for the fun of it: 100 short stories, and a fast-growing pile of read-by-author audiobooks.

Booklist says: 3x “Top 10 of the Year.” PW says: “Tom Clancy fans open to a strong female lead will clamor for more.” His fans say: “I want more now…of everything.” That his characters are even more insistent than his fans is a hoot.
As a 30-year project manager with a geophysics degree who has designed and built houses, flown and jumped out of planes, and solo-sailed a 50’ ketch, he is awed by what is possible. More at: www.mlbuchman.com.

I will be honest, this author has always been a struggle for me. I love that this is a male romance author (we don't have nearly enough of them) but his use of military lingo and tech terminology can be distracting at times. I liked this one but it was a slow read for me and I would have DNF'd it for that reason but I wanted to be able to read this as I wanted to do a review of it for Netgalley. (as I am working toward getting through all my backlogged books to review through them)

Light Up The Night is a very interesting story, and it has the typical flair of action that you normally see with this author. I really liked the connection that this pairing had together. Its basically a hate to love you story at least at the beginning, but there is attraction and chemistry they both hold for each other. As they continue to work together, respect and affection begins to build between the two. I had a fun time seeing their interactions that happen through the story and even though I did skim in some parts due to the slow paced writing, it was still a likeable story. And if you love seeing a action paced military romance then you definitely should check this one out and this author.

Quick & Dirty: A Night Stalker pilot and Navy Seal, dangerous mission can they find a forever love?

Opening Sentence: “Second lieutenant Trisha O’Malley waited ten kilometers off the North coast of Somalia for the mission “GO!” moment.”

Excerpt: No

The Review:

Trisha is a pilot in the Night Stalkers, and Bill is a Navy Seal embedded in Somalia. They meet when she comes to rescue some hostages and realizes his cover is blown and saves his life. They end up back on the ship and begin to get to know each other amidst all the dangerous missions going on. When Bill’s mother dies and Trisha pulls a stupid stunt and is sent on leave. She joins him in Vermont where they really begin to get to know each other as she helps him navigate through the emotional turmoil and the aftermath of his mother’s death.

When they decided to move down to Boston, Bill stumbles across Trisha’s secret, that she is really wealthy and has nothing to do with her family. When she finally comes clean about being told to leave and decide if she can be a team player, Bill helps her deal with that and come to terms with what working in special forces means. You have to be a team player. Upon returning they realize they are falling in love, but will they survive all the danger ahead.

Since I always love to tell you guys, nope I have not read any other book in this series. Honestly, I had a bit of hard time in the beginning. The writing is great, but too technical and not enough emphasis on the main characters. You really don’t start getting to know them until they go back to Bill’s home and bury his mother. I am glad I stuck it through because it did change my opinion on the the book. I am not a huge romance fan anymore, and I usually avoid military genre in general (prior military and my husband is a combat vet). I could complain about some things, but honestly I won’t because unless you are in the military you really wouldn’t know why I was complaining.

That aside, I did like seeing so many women in pilot roles for the Night Stalkers and I did love Trisha, although I felt like she was almost too perfect, she had some minor flaws, but all in all she was pretty great at everything! Bill however, I really enjoyed him as the main male character, he was thoughtful, considerate and smoking hot! This was a good read. I would have liked to see quite a bit more romance, a more cohesive plot and more character development.

Notable Scenes:

“If she’d unleashed a strike and gotten past his guard, no question it would have stung.

He watched her go. He wasn’t about to go chasing after some pint-sized Night stalker.

But, damn she was worth watching.”

FTC Advisory: Sourcebooks Casablanca provided me with a copy of Light up the Night. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

Buchman develops this story in striking clarity. At times I felt like I was in a war zone myself. I loved how Buchman got technical without it dragging the story down. I found it to be a very gripping read, as well as a refreshing change from so many authors who simply allude to events rather than developing them. The colourful descriptions in this novel allow you to see what the characters were seeing. The shift between day and night, US and foreign added a dramatic counterpoint.

The cast of characters in this novel were perfectly suited to the story at hand. I appreciate how everyone was more than simply their commission. Buchman works their everyday lives in with the events that they faced, showing how they balance. The main characters were exceptionally well and naturally developed. All aspects of their lives were developed, not simply those directly related to the story. And I love the way the main character thinks. By simply thinking, ‘Gods she was stupid,’ she opens herself up to an entirely new set of beliefs and principles that I found quite easy to relate to.

As a whole, this suspenseful & vivid story kept me captivated throughout. The balance of romance with the rest of the ‘real world’ story made it something that I’ll never forget.

Trisha O’Malley may fly a different type of helicopter from the rest of the crew that we’ve met in The Night Stalkers series, but she brings the same kind of dedication, drive and skill to her “Little Bird” that previous team members have carried to their positions on the big DAP Black Hawk helicopters that are the SOAR trademark.

Trisha’s “Little Bird” helicopter may be tiny, but its sole purpose on the mission is to rain death and destruction on its enemies. The weaponized version barely has enough space for a pilot and co-pilot, and the space is only spacious enough when they fly with the doors off.

Trisha herself is a smaller package than the previous women of SOAR, but that package is an ace helicopter pilot and a martial arts expert. She’s small and mighty. Mighty enough to hold her own in a fight with the 6’2” Navy SEAL she rescues in Somalia.

Billy Bruce starts out just plain mad that she pulled him out of his embedded operation among the Somali pirates. She saw that his cover was totally blown, and dragged him out semi-attached to the outside of her bird. It wasn’t until the middle of his rant aboard ship that he realized that the pilot he was yelling at was female. The first smart thing he did was to keep yelling, and not treat her any different because she looked like a pixie.

Neither of them wants a relationship, which doesn’t stop them from exploring the crazy chemistry between them. It starts out being easier that they are both Lieutenants but from different services; he’s Navy and she’s Army. It adds a friendly rivalry to the beginning of their story, and keeps them from violating the anti-frat regs.

But when Billy has to rush home for his mother’s funeral, and Trisha faces her own crisis of faith, they support each other in choppy emotional waters that bind them together. Even as the fear of how much it will hurt when the military inevitably sends them in different directions threatens to tear them apart before they can truly explore what they have.

In the midst of a dangerous hostage rescue, in the middle of the Somali desert, they discover that what they have is just one more reason for them to fight. Not with each other, but together against the odds.

Escape Rating B+: The entire Night Stalkers series (start with The Night Is Mine) is terrifically fun adrenaline-packed romance. If you want military romance packed with excitement both between the sheets and on the field of battle, this series is a winner.

Trisha has some elements of the character of Emily Beale, who was the heroine of The Night is Mine and was the first woman in SOAR. She is also Trisha’s role model. But they share something else in that both Trisha and Emily are children of privileged backgrounds, and both of them had mothers who desperately tried to mold them into more traditional female roles, and failed.

The difference is that Trisha spent her teenage years running with a gang in South Boston, and then coming home to her cushy but stifling upper-crust home. The gang taught her survival skills, got her started in martial arts, and helped her become a strong survivor.

Billy is from an even more streetwise background. The death of his father in the disastrous military operation at Mogadishu pushed his mother and 8-year-old self into poverty. Billy ran with some dangerous gangs until he got his revenge on the man who shot his best friend, and nearly killed Billy too.

Both these people have terrible scars, and dark secrets in their past. They’ve both learned to rely on no one but themselves, and one of the things they have to overcome is their tendency to keep secrets from each other.

On the lighter side, the humor and camaraderie of the mixed SOAR, Delta Squad and Navy crew aboard the old helicarrier create laughter and chuckles with the way that they tease and dig at each other. It was fun to see the Night Stalkers actually mingle with a bigger group, and not just hover on the fringes.

And it was an absolute pleasure to see Lola Maloney, the heroine of Take Over at Midnight, come into her own as an officer and as a mission commander. She does a fantastic job filling Emily Beale’s very impressive shoes.

Even though all the positions on the first Black Hawk have been both filled and partnered, I’m very happy that the author has found a way to continue the series with liaisons to the team. Which means I’m also looking forward to Bring on the Dusk, coming aboard next March.

Light Up The Night by M.L. Buchman is the fifth novel in The Night Stalkers series. It is action-packed with quiet moments interspersed throughout. The term romantic suspense doesn’t really do it justice. I think romantic action is more appropriate. The plot is fast paced and thoroughly entertaining. The romance unfolds between Trish and Bill over the course of the story. I liked them both a lot. Trish is a pilot assigned SOAR, (Special Operations Aviation Regiment), and Bill is a Navy SEAL. They are both very dedicated and skilled at what they do. They meet when Trish comes to his aid during a hostage extraction mission at a Somali compound. Shortly after, Bill is assigned to SOAR to assist them in their missions against Somali pirates.

I really liked Light Up The Night. The characters are personable and engaging. I liked Trish and Bill separately and together. The interactions between them and others aboard the USS Pelelui bring emotion and depth to the story. The action is skillfully written and flows seamless with the romance. The story takes off like a shot from the very first page and it kept me entertained from beginning to end. I just sat back and enjoyed the ride. The action, romance and plot combine together in an exciting and compelling read.

I highly recommend Light Up the Night to readers that enjoy a healthy dose of action with their romance.

When this one first started out I wasn't too sure about it, not sure that this couple could work. But as things went on I could see how they would and I started to root for them.

Both Trisha and Bill had issues with their families, issues that seemed to help them bond, along with the hard jobs they had. It was only as they dealt with the issues that you knew they would end up together. Each was so vulnerable and only let the other in and help them out.

I like how this one ended, the new job for Billy and the event at the end that brought all of them together.

Once again Dilya managed to steal so many scenes in the book. I found some of the conversations that she and Trisha had to be telling.

I received an ARC of Light Up the Night for an honest review.

Will and Trisha were completely awesome and enjoyable to read about. In fact reading about their interactions with each other and other characters was really great and the best part about the story.

One main problem I had was that some of the description dragged on. I didn’t really understand all the technical jargon and the explanation of the guns and things really got me lost. Having no prior knowledge I don’t think will stunt everyone’s reading of this story, it just did to mine.

All in all, while I enjoyed the characters, the romance, and the story I had a problem getting into it due to the war and gun terminology. I think a lot of people will enjoy this story it just wasn’t my favorite.

Yet another terrific book by Buchman. Loved it. This time, the heroine pilots one of the little two-person "Little Bird" helicopters, and of course is a great pilot. The hero is an undercover SEAL on a mission in Somalia she comes in on, and winds up rescuing him. He's not happy about that, because he wants the big boss and to stay undercover, but really had no choice. They each have pasts that tangle them up--including his father dead in the "Black Hawk Down" fiasco. And Buchman brings everything together with his usual skill. I really love the mix of technical stuff and romance. I think there's a new one of these. Can't wait to read it!

Another strong entry in Buchman's Night Stalker series, although the balance between tech talk/military manoevers and character development falls more heavily on the former than on the latter for my liking. Buchman's heroes continue to fall for their heroines because of their heroines' strengths, though, always a thumbs-up in my book.

Wow! I can't believe I got behind and missed Light Up the Night when it first came out. If you like military action mixed with some great romance, don't miss M.L. Buchman! In Light Up the Night, we meet Trisha O'Malley, a new addition to SOAR. When she rescues a Navy SEAL, things certainly heat up! I could not put this book down.

2nd Lt Trisha O'Malley flies a “Little Bird” stealth helicopter. Her assignment is aboard a Navy carrier supporting hostage removal from Somalia. Navy SEAL Bill Bruce has been undercover in Somalia and organizes the first raid Trisha is involved in. He then stays aboard the vessel to help guide further projects. They each admire the other's skills and are attracted, but each has issues and are heavily career oriented. The story is extremely action packed and violent. Scenes dealing with their family issues are angst filled. Another good volume in the series.

It's a good book. It's a story of how Trisha and Mark get together and rescue a bunch of hostages from Somali pirates. Trisha is a little rich girl daredevil that feels she always needs to prove herself. Mark is a poor kid from the streets who turned into a boy scout. Not the most realistic but they are likeable characters. I still enjoyed reading the technical details and military specifics, but because there's wasn't a single objective driving the book forward, it was easy to put down and not something so great you need to read it all at once.

I didn't care for Trish based on previous books, but so glad I read her story. This author is so very good at this genre (anybody better?), and this story is another very good one in this great series. Perfect balance of technical military action while developing a good romance that make sense. Two main characters that we get to know and understand. The reader may feel as if they are in the battles. This is a gripping read.

I was glad to see Trisha get a story as she was the only soldier to ever beat Emily Beale in a fight.

She shows her strength when she follows Michael when he is hurt the most. I am glad to see that she reconciled with her parents. Michael's past is harsh, but it sounds like the last bad deed he committed couldn't have happened to a more deserving person.

Lots of action, interesting relationships. I found myself holding my breath and not wanting to read on in some places for fear of action failure. Also plot that brought attention to very real pirate citations in this day and age. Loved the two heroes of this book, too.

If you're into military romance, this series is better than most. The characters are different even if the action sequences are all similar. Trish and Bill were not my favorite - that is reserved for Emily and Mark.

REVIEW: LIGHT UP THE NIGHT is the fifth instalment in M.L. Buchman’s adult, contemporary The Night Stalkers military romance series focusing on a group of specially trained military personnel from the U.S. Army secret helicopter regiment the 160th SOAR (Special Operations Aviation Regiment). This is helicopter pilot Trisha O’Malley and CIA SEAL operative William (Bill) Bruce’s storyline. Although it is the fifth book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

The storyline finds Bill and Trisha at odds with one another. Bill doesn’t trust the military and prefers to work by himself. But finding himself with a group of pilots and a paramilitary unit, who rescued Bill from a Somali attack, he is about to undertake one of the most dangerous missions of his life-the SOAR unit has asked him to assist on their next mission to take down a group of Somali pirates who have captured several boats, including an American yacht, near the Horn of Africa. Bill’s reluctance stems from his need to work alone and his attraction to one helicopter pilot-Trisha O’Malley.

The relationship between Bill and Trisha is one of immediate attraction but on the surface they rub each other the wrong way. From their turbulent first meeting the couple is in a continuous battle with their emotions and feelings for one another. But an urgent call back home will find Bill heading State side leaving a confused Trisha behind-only Trisha has her own demons to address before she is able to continue with the mission. The sex scenes are passionate and sensual.

The world building continues throughout the series with the familiar names and places, military jargon and speech. The secondary characters are colorful, engaging and include many of the previous storyline couples and characters. Their relationship to one another is of respect, friendship, comaraderie and love. They are all very protective of one another and will ensure that no one, even the new guys, will place anyone in danger.

With reference to the military jargon, there is a vast amount of technical information and detailed military language throughout the storyline but it does not deter from the overall premise. M. L. Buchman has executed his research very well.

M. L. Buchman weaves a story of romance into a military action series with passion, emotion and an intensity that is breathtaking and real. You will feel the incredible highs and lows, the thrill of the hunt, and the honor that each member of the unit instills within his or herself. LIGHT UP THE NIGHT is a realistic and intelligent look at a military rescue operation with a little bit of romance on the side.

My Review:
I've been a fan of this series from the very beginning. The technical aspects in this one did get a bit too much this time, but that could have just been my mood because I've enjoyed the technical aspect in the other books. Regardless, I just got where I was just scanning that part of the story because the romance in this one was fantastic.

Bill is a SEAL. He comes into contact with the NightStalkers when they are called in to rescue hostages from Somali pirates. Bill has been embedded undercover with the pirates for several months, but his mission is about to go to crap when Trisha saves him in her Little Bird helicopter. He's not exactly happy with the rescue since it blows his cover and that was before he discovered that it was a woman doing the rescuing.

Like all the Night Stalkers, Trisha is an incredible helicopter pilot, but she's new to the group and has some things to learn about teamwork. She's always been the best and reacts that way. But now in a team where they are all that good, she needs to react as part of the team so that they all perform better. It's an adjustment for her. Trisha was a complex character. She grew up as a very wealthy Bostonite, but chose to run with a gang and live on the street rather than deal with her parents. As a result, she's an interesting mix of really tough girl socialite.

I loved these two characters together and loved how we got to know their families and backgrounds in the story. I loved how they react to one another and just how good both of them are at reading other people. Bill's knowledge when Trisha gets shot gave me goosebumps. They were simply right together. I also enjoyed the fact that this book took place on an almost deserted ship...it created an interesting ambience to the story. And I've said it before, any of these books where Michael makes an appearance is good in my view. I love the connection between him and Trisha.

This is also an amazing book in that it spotlights the mission in Mogadishu that went so wrong twenty plus years ago. My husband was in the Air Force and was part of the responding mission to that incident, which was my first deployment as a military spouse sitting at home watching the horror on CNN. I liked that the book brought it to light again, because those men that lost their lives and were wounded sacrificed so much. They deserve to be honored and not forgotten. Mistakes were made and good men lost everything because of it, but this book brings hope (even in a fictional world) that those mistakes were learned to save other lives later. It's hard to believe that country continues to be such an incredible hotbed of international crimes. Hopefully, someday that will change.

I was worried because the epilogue of this book was written like it was a final book in the series...with a glimpse of everyone from the past stories, but I was happy to see on Amazon earlier today that there is another book listed as coming soon in this series. Yay! I love the Night Stalkers and still have hope that Michael will find his HEA soon, too!

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

"Light Up the Night" by M.L. Buchman which I won through Goodreads Giveaways is a fast-paced, action-packed military thriller with a large dose of romance. It begins in Somalia with Trisha O'Malley on a night mission to rescue prisoners being held in the compound of the local warlord Mahan. When the undercover operative is compromised she rescues him, only to be met with belligerence and anger when they land on the Peleliu.

When Navy Seal Lieutenant William (Billy) Bruce doesn't return to his team but is commandeered by Colonel Michael Gibson because of his expertise and knowledge on the Somalia pirate problem to work on Operation Heavy Hand with 106th Soar, Delta Force and Rangers on board he never expects to be attracted to the feisty pilot who rescued him. As romance ignites between Trisha and Billy and their missions against the Somalia pirates become more dangerous, both have to confront the demons from their past and learn to trust one another.

M.L. Buchman sets the stage for an exciting and mesmerizing plot in Somalia where pirates are known for their aggressiveness in seizing ships and holding the crews for ransom. The mission of the refitted aircraft carrier the USS Peleliu is to hunt down the pirates and release any hostages. As the plot heats up the assault ship's complement of Soar helicopter specialists, Special Operations Army Rangers, a 6-man team of Delta Force and the newest Seal member challenge the dominance of the Somalian pirates in the Gulf, freeing their hostages. The vivid description of the military missions as well as the technical aspects of their weaponry don't delete from the story but make it come alive.

Even the romance between Trisha and Billy is filled with many warm and poignant moments especially when he's faced with the death of his mother and she has to confront her dysfunctional parents. Each one has a past they want to keep hidden. Billy harbours the pain of a father killed in the crossfire of the Battle of Mogadishu which left his mother destitute and him toughened by street wars. Similarly, although Trisha's father is a lawyer with political connections and her mother a socialite, she felt abandoned by them and ran with Vinny's gang until she turned sixteen. With their pasts neither trusts completely, both run from long-term romantic liaisons until love opens their hearts.

The characters like the plot are well-developed and complex especially Second Lieutenant Trisha O'Malley the AH-6M "Little Bird" pilot. Clearly Irish with her red hair and short temper, she's sassy, self-assured, tough and driven. She has a keen sense of humor, can be arrogant and stubborn, yet from time to time is as charming as she is irascible. Navy Seal Lieutenant William Bruce, a Scot is tenacious, hard and dangerous. A high-value asset and born leader he's smart and well-respected by everyone. All the characters in this story show their unreserved dedication to duty and bravery under adverse and dangerous conditions.

I thoroughly enjoyed "Light Up the Night" by M.L. Buchman and intend to look for other books in the Night Stalkers series.

Light Up the Night (The Night Stalkers, #5) by M.L. Buchman

**Recieved this book from Sourcebooks, through Goodreads in exchange for an Honest Review. **

Trisha O'Malley is a Fiery , but very secretive Second LT. and member of the U.S. Armys elite 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. (SOAR) named The Night Stalkers.
LT. William Bruce is a Mercenary Navy Seal working undercover in somalia to try and free hostages from somoli pirates. He is also very elusive about his past . Until he meets Trisha and everything begins to change in both their lives.

I have had the privilage to read all the proceeding books in the Night Stalkers series' and enjoyed each and every journey i've been taken on .
The books are ,

1 - The Night is Mine

2 - I Own the Dawn

3 - Wait Until Dark

4 - Take Over at midnight

5 - Light Up the Night (This Book)

6 - Bring On the Dusk (TBR) (Cannot wait !!!)

These books are all filled with very strong female charactors and Hot Alpha Males.
The Action and suspense is fast paced , on the edge of your seat and very Exciting.
M.L. has written these stories in such realistic detail it's hard not to picture everything happening in front of you.
I actually thought i was in a little bird Helicopter in the skies of Simolia at one point firing off rounds of ammunition with Trisha .
I also loved the slow building, emotional romance between the charactors of Trisha and Bill. They are a little torn and in denial of alot of things that have happened in their pasts.Once they start to Trust in each other and let their walls down, their secrets come out you feel their love taking form.
The love scenes are steamy !
Who ever said a Guy couldn't write a sensual love scene has never read Mr.Buchman's books.I loved these little cookies that were added at just the right moments in the storyline.
I recommend these books to both ladies and gentleman. They are all stand alones and don't have to be read in order .
I am looking forward to the next book in this series and will also add the two books in his new Firehawks series.
1 -Pure Heat
2 - Full blaze
Thank you to Sourcebooks , goodreads and M.L. Buchman for this book.
