One hot stolen night with a country star turns into a major complication in this Western romance set in the wilds of Montana, perfect for fans of Elsie Silver and Lyla Sage.

The past is the past—until he shows up on your doorstep.

Self-proclaimed good girl Aubrey Hale has too many secrets. Among them is missing the big-city life she left behind for small-town Montana—the life that included a one-night stand with country star Gunner Woods. But Aubrey and her friends have recently sworn off men. So when Gunner turns up in Timber Falls looking all kinds of sexy, she pretends she’s never met him.

Gunner is surprised to see Aubrey again and even more surprised by how she’s acting. The carefree woman he knew for one night is now jaded. After a failed record launch, Gunner can relate—and maybe they could even find solace in each other, if she’d stop treating him like a stranger.

Aubrey’s not ready to let her guard down, but she’s just fine with letting the sparks between them burn… But when Gunner’s career reignites, she’ll have to reckon with her discontent. Can you chase two separate dreams without burning everything to the ground?

From showing up to glowing up, the characters in Afterglow Books are on the path to leading their best lives and finding sizzling romance along the way. Don’t miss any of these other fun titles…

Sometimes you are in the mood for a spicy read, and when it also has a cowboy as the lead – be still my heart.

This book started with a hot kickstart and awesome hopes for the book. A fabulous week that leads to actions that carry on and impact the characters throughout the rest of the book, even years later.
I have to admit, I got a bit frustrated a time or two with my Aubrey for the way she treated Gunner by not having conversations that could have opened the door to healing instead of heartbreak. He tried over and over, and let’s be honest, there is only so much someone should put up with, and he went over and above.

The book is loaded with tension and longing. They belong together, and the fact that she withheld for so long did not lead ot emotional impact for me. It led me to frustration.

Kennedy added a wonderful setting and secondary characters that were sweet and supportive. The wedding descriptive scenes were awesome and set the tone for the book

Overall, The Rebel with Broken Strings is a sweet romance with a perfect touch of spice. These two broken and insecure hearts eventually find love, but they remain insecure throughout. A satisfying and simplistic plot with a bit more drama than needed, in my opinion. But the ending made up for so much! LOVE

3.5 STARS!!

the book started very promising + i loveeed the main characters’ chemistry. their one night stand and break up after was so attention grabbing and i enjoyed seeing mmc fighting for fmc.

but…. after 60% the book, it became too repetitive and therefore boring. the main couple got together, out of nowhere, and now they moved to the background. they had no development in their characters or relationships. both became very blunt and emotionless. the writing was also not the best. “So am I. I know we’ve got a lot to figure out, so let’s just figure it out, okay?”. ummm okay?

Thank you to Netgalley, Afterglow Books by Harlequin and Hopeless Romantics for the arc.

If you’re looking for a short, easy, feel-good read with the cosy charm of a Hallmark Christmas movie, look no further than The Rebel with Broken Strings.

I picked this book up based purely on the description because, what can I say, being a big cowboy romance fan, I couldn’t resist. The book started off strong, steamy, and full of promise. It’s written in third person (not my favourite), but I thought it worked well here.

Our main character, country music star Gunner Woods, is introduced as someone struggling with the aftermath of a painful accident and a reliance on pills to cope. The story quickly jumps forward to Timber Falls, where Gunner is sober and trying to rebuild his life.

Then there’s Aubrey Hale, who is left heartbroken and hurt after Gunner abandoned her following their passionate week together. She’s now living in Timber Falls too, refuting her past with Gunner.

While there was potential for a really emotional reunion, Gunner’s relentless attempts to get Aubrey to admit who she was made me uncomfortable, and I found myself wishing he’d just moved on. Their chemistry was emphasised repeatedly, but their reconciliation lacked the depth and redemption arc I hoped for. Once they rekindled their romance, the story felt as though it lost some momentum.

I also didn’t really connect with the characters. They felt a little too sweet, forgiving, and tidy for my taste. Based on the description, I was expecting more angst and more steamy scenes, but neither really materialised.

That said, the author’s descriptive writing shines when it comes to setting. Timber Falls is painted vividly, though at times the detail felt a little heavy-handed. And while the pacing lagged for me (the book felt like it could’ve ended around the 60% mark), it was still a quick read at under 300 pages.

Overall, The Rebel with Broken Strings didn’t quite deliver the emotional punch I was hoping for, but it’s a light, easy read perfect for fans of cowboy romances. I’d still consider picking up the other books in the series when I’m in the mood for something simple and comforting.

Many thanks to NetGalley, Stacey Kennedy and Harlequin for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Summary
Gunner & Aubrey met over one hot Atlanta week when Gunner was a rising county star. But addiction to prescription pain medication derailed both Gunner's dreams and his budding relationship with Aubrey.

Chef Aubrey had her own professional dreams shattered, and she fled with her best friends to Timber Falls, Montana and a bar called the Naked Moose. She's still licking her wounds and trying to find her place in a small town which feels two sizes too small.

When Gunner appears on the scene, as it's his hometown she's crashed into, Aubrey at first denies even being the same woman from Atlanta. Gradually their attraction wins out, apologies are made, and alls well that ends well.
_____
Quick Thoughts
This is an extremely low conflict or stakes Contemporary category. There is some banter at the start, but the two quickly resolve their past and settle into a relationship that moves in a mostly straight line until the HEA. It's part party planning story, part logistics of celebrity life with a normal person.

If you are looking for Hallmark regular season movie vibes and plot construction, but with open door spicy scenes, then this fits the bill.

This is the series ender, so the epilogue serves as a many years down the road wrap up with all the couples from the Naked Moose series.

This was such a cute second chance small town romance with a dash of country star sparkle. I loved the setup: big city one night stand that comes back to haunt you when said country boy strolls into your Montana town? Sounds like the perfect set up for this western romance.

Aubrey and Gunner’s chemistry was obvious right from the jump, and I was fully invested in their reconnection. I liked that both of them were carrying some heavy past baggage, but the book still managed to keep a warm, feel good vibe overall. Honestly, Gunner had me giggling and kicking my feet more than once (cowboy charm + musician soul = dangerous combo 🫠).

That said, I’ll be honest... the last stretch lost me a little. Once their issues were resolved and they were officially together, the story started to feel a bit repetitive and veered into boring territory. I missed the tension and spark of the earlier chapters. Still, I enjoyed the journey enough that I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a sweet, low angst romance with plenty of small town charm, music, and second chance feels, especially if you are a fan of Elsie Silver and Lyla Sage who like their cowboys with guitars and their love stories with a hopeful, healing edge. 🎶🤠💖

Aubrey and Gunner had an incredible week together in Atlanta before Gunner disappeared without so much as a note from Aubrey's life. Struggling with pain and a pill addiction as well as seeing his music career go up in flames, he just didn't think he could make it work. Now he is back in Aubrey's orbit in Timber Falls. Montana and he wants to see if they can make it work. He's sober and committed to finding a way back into her heart. This is the third book in the Naked Moose series by Stacey Kennedy - I hadn't read the first two but you do meet the characters that are in the other two books and I think it would be good to have read the other two to help situate this book. It is a sweet story that has a solid amount of spice between the two lovers. You certainly fall in love with Timber Falls and the community that resides there - I definitely would visit just to try one of Aubrey's cocktails - they sounded delicious. I can't say that I totally engaged with Aubrey and Gunner's romance but the friendships between all the key characters in the book was certainly heartwarming. The epilogue pulls the three books together into a final moment for them all. For me it is a three and half star read that was enjoyable to read. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read the arc. This final book in the series comes out in November 2025.

The Rebel with Broken Strings
By Stacey Kennedy
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
I devoured this book like a slice of warm pie after a long day on the ranch. I mean—cowboys, romance, redemption? Yes, please! 🤠💕

Though it’s the third book in the series, it reads perfectly fine as a standalone (I jumped in without reading the first two and had no trouble keeping up). This is a heartfelt, emotional story about second chances, healing from addiction, and finding love in the unlikeliest of places.

Gunner—a soulful musician, rugged cowboy, and recovering addict—completely stole my heart. Aubrey, a strong-willed chef with her own heavy baggage, was equally compelling. Together?

Their chemistry felt real and raw, with enough tension and tenderness to keep the pages turning late into the night.
The friendships and side relationships added warmth to the story.
I could honestly see this book playing out on screen—the scenery, the slow-burn romance, the music... it all screams for a cozy, binge-worthy movie or TV series.
If you’re into cowboy charm, and stories that leave your heart a little fuller, this one’s a must-read.

Thank you NetGalley and Harlequin-Romance for the ARC.

Aubrey Hale has a little secret, one she hopes never sees the light of day. It would shine the self-proclaimed good girl in a bad light and that cannot happen. All has been good on the secret front... until he waltzing into town!

The Rebel with Broken Strings is a story of second chances, chasing dreams, healing, and finding love when you least expect it find you. After Aubrey's culinary dreams in the big city didn't pan out she packed her things and headed for Montana, with the promise from friends that she could heal and find a new life there. Which was a big relief, her secrets would be safe and she could truly start over where no one knew her or anything about her past. All is going well until her past waltzes into town and tries to unearth a secret she has fought hard to keep quiet. It's a disaster waiting to happen, with an awfully dreamy package to deliver it.

I really enjoyed this one, it's well penned words kept me entertained and it characters easily found their way into my heart... it was the perfect afternoon escape! Highly recommend!

I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.

Aubrey is a city chef from Atlanta and she moves to a small town after being through a lot, she's finally in a good place when she sees HIM. Gunner is a famous country singer, who after dealing with addiction and being in recovery returns to his hometown.
They spend one crazy week in Atlanta and are clearly each others "One that got away" and we get to see if they give eachother a second chance.
The story was raw and full of emotion, however, due to their turbulent pasts I'd loved to see a bit more of that past and a bit more of character (and relationship) development. I really felt that after 70% of the book, the story was sped up and missed a bit of debt. I'm also not the biggest fan op 3rd person POV. But I did like the story, the small town setting and the characters.
Don't let the 3-star review keep you from reading this, this was purely taste based. I really feel that others, who don't mind a quick read or 3rd person POV, will really love this.

Thanks to Netgalley, Harlequin and Stacey Kennedy for entrusting me with an advanced copy to write an honest review about.

I picked up this book based on the description and because I’m a sucker for a good western romance. It’s on the shorter side, and about halfway through, the jilted lover forgave the musician. Honestly, I was a little frustrated by how quickly that happened. She didn’t really make him work for it, and his redemption arc was almost nonexistent, one moment he was out, and the next, boom, they were back together.

But as the story went on and their relationship grew, I realized how healthy their dynamic actually was. Both characters carried their own traumas, yet they communicated well, respected each other’s feelings, and truly considered each other’s wants and needs. It’s the kind of relationship I’d aspire to have myself.

The ending tied everything together beautifully. While it includes a short lived third act breakup, the story avoids unnecessary toxicity, focusing instead on healing and connection. Overall, I really enjoyed this book.

I wanted to thank NetGalley for this ebook.

There’s just something about a country star with a guitar, a broken dream, and a smoulder that SCREAMS "book boyfriend." !!

Aubrey is out here doing her best "good girl in small town Montana" routine, pretending she never had one wild night with Gunner Woods.

Meanwhile, Gunner’s trying to put the pieces of his career back together and, oh yeah, maybe steal Aubrey’s heart while he’s at it.

The chemistry between these two?? Instant spark, slow burn, and a whole lot of stolen glances that made me internally squeal.

And I loved how both characters were figuring out who they wanted to be, not just together, but for themselves.

Also, the Western vibes + country music touches? Perfection.

If you like your small town romance spicy, musical, and full of second chances, this one is calling your name.

Review: The Rebel with Broken Strings by Stacey Kennedy 🌟
This book gave me all the feels. 💔🎶 Gunner is the kind of hero you can’t help but root for—flawed, vulnerable, and determined to make things right. Aubrey’s walls are sky-high, but the slow unraveling of her heart was so worth the wait. Their second-chance romance is messy, tender, and seriously swoony. 💕
The small-town Montana setting adds so much charm (I want to live in Timber Falls now 😍), and the side characters bring that cozy, community vibe that makes you feel right at home.
Yes, the middle stretched a little slow at times, but honestly? The emotional payoff and the heat 🔥 more than made up for it.
If you love:
✨ Second-chance romance
✨ Small-town settings
✨ A hero who wears his scars with pride
✨ Emotional, heart-tugging journeys
…then this one’s for you. 💫

Who doesn’t love a lil small town, cowboy romance? 👀

I am so grateful to have received this arc because I’ve been lost not knowing what to read after reading Lylas Rebel Blue series but this was the perfect edition to my cowboy romance obsession.

I absolutely loved Gunner and Aubrey, they were a matched made in heaven and for once I didn’t mind having a second chance trope 🫣 I’ll be honest it’s not usually my favourite BUT the first chance was a very quick one so I feel like at some parts it actually only felt like they had just met.

There was so much I enjoyed especially the was Gunner did the talent show 🥹 but it was soooo frustrating whenever he got news that he might have to leave I was like JUST TELL HER ALREADY BEFORE SHE FINDS OUT 🤣🤣

Overall a very fun, light easy cowboy romance

This book was a cute romance but didn’t knock my socks off. It’s the third in a series in which I hadn’t read the first two, so I might have been at a bit of a disadvantage. There were some things I really enjoyed about this book and some things that I really did not. I didn’t like that he was a recovering addict but still drank. I didn’t like a side storyline where he was mentoring elementary students (nice idea but it just came across super cheesy). But my big hang up was I hated the way the MMC spoke so much. Tons of y’alls and darlin’ and honestly it felt like the stupidest stereotype of a country singer. I just couldn’t get past it and I was pulled out of the story almost every time he spoke. If that works for you, there were things to really love about this book but it was more of a miss for me.

I would recommend picking this up of your looking for a quick read - it’s less than 300 pages .

Smal town
Second chance
Cowboy / musician

Book is 3rd person PoV and I mention this because personally I have to be in the mood to read 3rd person.

I really enjoyed the overall plot of the book, the writing and the characters however I was very frustrated with Aubrey and her gaslighting Gunner , let’s call it what is is gaslighting , denying that anything happened between them when he vividly remembers it. I know it was suppose to build the tension between the couple and I can forgive denying it once or twice but felt that it was dragged out a little to long .

We do eventually each a HEA and again personally that’s what I look for in a book , I can forgive anything in a plot as long as they get their HEA

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of The Rebel with Broken Strings by Stacey Kennedy.

This story had an interesting premise and moments that I did enjoy, but overall it didn’t fully connect with me. The pacing felt a little uneven at times, and I struggled to form a strong attachment to the characters. While the romance had potential, I was left wanting more emotional depth and intensity to really draw me in.

That said, Stacey Kennedy’s writing style is easy to read and I think readers who enjoy a lighter romance with a straightforward storyline may connect with this one more than I did. For me, it was an okay read, but I’m sure others will appreciate it differently.

The Rebel with Broken Strings - book 3 in the Naked Moose series, i loved books 1 and 2 so was super excited to read this one.
Wow, firstly I love the name, so fitting for the story and secondly the front cover is to die for!
Perfect for fans of spicy romance, the spice starts in the epilogue and the second chance trope. I did really enjoy the story like i did the rest of the series and i would recommend, it's quite a short read i just felt that something was missing but I'm not sure what.

Thank you so much for the ARC. All opinions are my own and are left voluntarily.

I am currently in my cowboy romance era and this book fits the bill. I liked the plot and the chemistry of the characters. I do feel that the characters could have been built up more to give depth and make them more dimensional. I enjoyed the plot but think it was over-simplified at times and had drama that didn’t add to the story. I enjoyed learning more about the friend group and the dynamics within it. I think the language, punctuation and flow was basic and could use development. Overall, I think it was a good cowboy palette cleanser but did not live up to other cowboy series I have read.

Review: I had a really hard time connecting with the characters. I felt like the book was repetitive. By 70% in I was ready for the book to be over. With that being said it was an okay read for me. I liked the cowboys, the music aspect, and the cocktails Aubrey was making they sounded pretty good!

I read this book so fast. Gunner came across as messy but loveable, a musician with a cowboy soul trying to rebuild his life, and Aubrey was strong, sharp, and carrying her own heavy past. Their chemistry was not just sparks, but also quiet moments of care, I would have liked for Gunner to fight harder for redemption, but the way they communicated and respected each other gave the romance a healthy touch I really liked. The writing had a cozy vibe. It left me smiling and a little moved. Thank you so much to the author, Harlequin and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read the book in advance, I received this for free and I'm leaving a honest review

The Rebel with Broken Strings is a gut-wrenching, heartwarming tale of second chances and redemption. Our hero is a country star who blew up his professional life and with help from his friends is trying to get his life back on track. One of the things he lost was a chance to love Aubrey the incredible chef in Atlanta. Now Aubrey is in his hometown in Montana creating magic at the Naked Moose. He’s a new man can he convince her to give him a second chance. I ached at Aubrey’s pain and respected Gunner’s path to redemption. This is a fantastic addition to the Naked Moose series.

Book 3 in the Naked Moose Series.

Thank you to Netgally for the ARC.

Can be read as a standalone, but you'll get so much more out of this series if read together.

The title really does hit the mark, this book has some raw emotion, Gunner and Aubreys story hits on addiction, abandonment, sexual assault but friendship, dreaming big in a town that has your back can make anything possible.

The naked moose is still rocking and those cocktails sound delicious, throw in a few hot cowboys what more could you want? of course a cowboy that can play guitar and sing his heart out!

The Rebel with Broken Strings... the third book in the Naked Moose series 🤠🤎
This was my favourite book of the series! 📖

I love a cowboy romance (obv 😅) and this one was heartfelt with a little bit of spice - a must for me 🌶

Both MCs have quite tragic backstories.. I wish the book went into more detail but I did enjoy the Gunner & Aubrey storyline! I LOVE when hearts get a second chance to connect 💕

The only reason this didn't get 5 stars is because I’m personally not a huge fan of books written in the third person POV but I still loved it and thought it was a great read!! 🫶✨️

Small town secrets + a country star with a past = sparks everywhere. Aubrey and Gunner’s chemistry jumps off the page, and I was hooked from their very first (okay, technically second) meeting. I loved the Montana setting and all the messy, heartfelt push-pull between chasing dreams and risking your heart.

Aubrey made me want to shake her a few times, but that slow-burn payoff was so worth it. Gunner? Total book boyfriend material. If you love Elsie Silver or Lyla Sage, this one will definitely hit the spot.

Rebel with the Broken Strings 🎸🤠 is book three in Stacey Kennedy’s Naked Moose series—and it’s my fav out of the three.

This one’s a sweet second chance romance 💕 with cowboys, small town charm 🌲 and a country music twist 🎶. While the plot was somewhat predictable, the chemistry between the leads kept me going and made it a cozy, feel good read.

⋆˚࿔ i’m sorry but how did everything even start? there’s no decent plot or clear timeline. everything felt really scattered. i needed some kind of tension between gunners and aubrey because without it, their relationship didn’t feel convincing. everything also happened too fast and i couldn’t really feel any development in their relationship. besides, it’s written in third pov which made it even harder for me to stay engaged. no offense, but this one’s really not my cup of tea.

Loved the second chance romance!!
This is the third book in the series it was very fast paced.
For such a short story a lot was going on which had me enjoying it but I think we need more to the story it was to short to be honest would have liked to see more of the Mmc and how he over come his addiction. But loved the friendship and relationship in the group want to read the other books.
Overall it was a good book just need to be longer 🥰

This really wasn’t for me (but some people will enjoy it!!)

It was really over explained and clinical without also explaining anything at all

I had to DNF as I found the writing really hard to read (it almost read like AI) - the time jump with zero explanation to the present was really jarring and overall just didn’t flow right with me enough to want to continue reading it
