Life is short. At twenty-one, Liz Kane knows this. Having lost her dad in combat, she is well aware of life's cruel twists. Still, working to pay her way through school and cautiously beginning a new relationship, Liz is content. When an accident brings her brother, John, Stateside from his current stint in the Marine's, life gives Liz another twist, this time bringing in an old friend, new love, and the possibility of happiness for John when he meets Mandy. This is a story of love, loss, and new beginnings.

This book wasn't what I was expecting... After rereading the synopsis I thought this book was going to be about Liz... I mean.. It started off that way. But... it took a turn & I felt this book was more Mandy & John's story. It's weird... It didn't even feel like this was a military book ...like I thought it was going to be. I mean...I did get some of the military feel...but, more towards the end. The whole Mike thing was throwing it off for me.
The cover made it seem like... Letters were going to be sent & we were going to get some battle action with a love story. I didn't really get all that.
What happened to John.. I felt was little predictable. I just knew it was going to happened. And I saw the whole Joe thing coming too...
For me....it just all fell a little short.
Two things really didn't really sit well me in this book.
One of the things was... How Liz acted & treated Brady. OMG... Why did he put up with her always putting him down..& letting her call him names!! He needed a backbone!!
And...the other thing that bugged me was... The use of the word "Soldier".
My husband is a former Marine... He told me way in the beginning... Marines do not like to be called "Soldiers"!!
In other Military branches you can call them soldiers...
But... if your going to talk about a Marine... You say he's a Marine...not a "Soldier".
if I was going to rate this book on pure emotion I'd give it 10 stars but unfortunately I struggled to get through parts of this story. In this case I'm OK with being the odd girl out thou
I picked up this book after chatting with Sophie Monroe at a book signing that I attended earlier in the year. She was extremely kind and gracious in speaking with me, a reader who had never heard of her before. Well it took me a few months to actually read To Love a Soldier but I am so glad that I finally picked it up. It is a fast paced, heart felt story that grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go. I make no secret about my love for a man in uniform but this particular military man was something special.
There is a lot happening in this book. The story is told from multiple POV's but focuses mainly on two female characters Liz and Mandy. Now Liz and Mandy have a rocky start to say the least. But when Liz finds herself in a troubling situation, it was Mandy who was there to lend a hand. From there a deep and wonderful sistership formed. It is through that crazy circumstance that Mandy comes to meet John, Liz's brother who just happens to be a Marine.
I loved Mandy and her boldness in going after who and what she wanted. She wasn't shy about her desire for John and he doesn't take much convincing (he is a guy after all). What started out as insta-lust became so much more though. His relationship forced John to take a long, hard look at what he really wanted for his future and to make some tough choices. And while this sweet new love is blossoming, there is still the threat of the unknown with the Liz situation.
The last quarter of this book is heart pounding. There is closure for Liz but not without having me holding my breath. And just when I think it was going to be all sunshine and rainbows for this family who had already suffered so much...BAM! heartbroken. It took me a good bit to read the last few chapters because of the tears streaming down my face.
Sophie Monroe absolutely nailed it with To Love a Soldier. She managed to balance humor, sweetness, anxiety, dedication, hope, fear and love into a story that is perfectly relevant in today's world. It is about finding strength and hope from within when all seems lost. I was deeply moved by this book and its message will stay with me for quite some time.
Super touching and emotionally charged story of love, loss, and the power to heal! I'm a huge Sophie Monroe fan, and although this story is definately different than her rock star series, Battlescars, it's just as gripping! I couldn't put it down, and the tears were flowing! This story takes you to a whole new place, and Sophie did an amazing job letting us see through the eyes of Liz.
She is a girl who lost her father in the war, and now her beloved brother is also in the military. She and her mother are constantly on edge, waiting for that dreaded phone call. When they get the ultimate surprise, in her brother John coming home, they are overwhelmed with joy. The relationship between Liz and John is awesome, and we should all be so lucky to have such an amazing bond of friendship with a sibling.
In coming home, John meets Mandy, who brings a whole new flair to the story, and the way she's introduced is quite hilarious. Talk about a firecracker! So many events occur in this time, and it was a constant page turner, just to see what would happen next. Absolutely loved it, and it's bound to touch your heart!
This is such a bittersweet story nad as you get into it, it is so heart wrenching. The emotional toll military life takes on a family during deployment is so evident that you can't help but getting sucked in completely. There was more angst than I had expected, but it was done so well that you lived the story with the characters. BUT and this is a huge BUT I hated, yes hated Liz the female lead. She was so bitchy to her boyfriend, her new best friend, her mother, her brother, it was like reading about a 13 year old brat! Thankfully, the story took a twist that held my interest enough to try to ignore most of the dialogue from Liz. She was over the top with her calling everyone Bitch, her actions were downright mean and disrespectful to her boyfriend. But I loved the love affair with John & Mandy, I wanted more for them - I both hated and loved the end -read it and I'm sure you'll agree - it's bound to touch your heart in ways you didn't expect. Bring lots of tissues - you'll need them. Sophie Monroe did a good job on this - we can't always love all the characters in our books - so I'm good with my thoughts on this one.
This started with the sister POV. I was getting intrigued with Liz's perspective of her boyfriend Brady. Afraid of becoming intimate because of previous lovers. I was getting so wrapped up that Mandy's POV totally threw me. In a sense the story is about Many and her relationship with Liz's brother John. I grew interested because of the way the author wrote the story. I felt like I was being drawn into Mandy's story because of Liz. Liz is self conscious and very flawed. However Mandy is different confident and mature. It was just interesting and I couldn't step away from the story once I started it.
Ok this book is so much more than I expected. It's heartbreaking and wow. Life is short and well love comes when you least expect it and you just o with it. Growing up in a military family isn't easy as you will read but to top it off John enrolls years later. Something happens that brings John home for a couple of weeks and that's where he meets Mandy. She's really funny a a piece of work but she's perfect for John. As you keep reading you are amazed and brought into the story I loved it a lot. But tissues are a necessity for you will love To Love A soldier.
Hmmm the synopsis and the reality of this book don't tally. You think you're getting one thing and end up reading something totally different. It was ok, just really not what I was expecting. Also, the way the character of Brody was written at the beginning of the book made us really not like him much and yet without really doing anything to redeem himself (other than "be there") we were supposed to love him by the end. So, disappointing but you get 3 stars for making me cry a little.
I was fortunate enough to get to BETA for this book and loved it so much it hurt. I cried like nobody's business, worse than Taking Chances, but it was one of the best books I have read and definitely the best from Sophie. Nothing like her other books and nothing like you will see coming. Loved it- definitely one to pick up the day it hits the net. <3 Kellie
Wow I feel like my heart was just ripped out of my chest and stomped on and then put back together! Have your tissues ready when you read this one! This is completely different than Sophie's Battlescar series... and I loved it! If your looking for a book with love, loss, and the power to heal and love again... this books for you!
I beta read this book it was amazing! what a beautiful and emotional read. tears for sure.. there was one point where i just lost it. I can't wait for everyone to read this!! this story will stay with you for a long time. Its a story about love, loss and second chances. I don't want to give away spoilers but this is a must read.!! excellent job sophie!! ♥♥
I usually love books by this author but this one didn't have the HEA it should have so I could only give it 4 stars. I hate that the author took it in this direction. We as readers what to read that good things happen and that tragedy isn't always the outcome. Yes the heroin found love but the ending would have been so much better if it was different.
I don't think I have cried this much in ages! This book is heartbreaking.... I knew it would be but wow I felt so many emotions whilst reading it. It's a wonderful dedication to all war heros and people who defend their county! Wonderful story
I found it took a while to get used to the several POV' s but I then began to enjoy it. Such a bittersweet story and very heart wrenching. So sad but Sophie has done very well in keeping it real and not sugar coating this situation.
I could not even finish reading this. The story line(s) were not well planned, and in desperate need of editing. I've read some bad books before but managed to finish them. This was not even worth my time.
Amazing story! Different from her 'usual' rocker stories. This story touched me on a personal level. Won't give too much away but so glad that Sophie wrote this story. Beautifully written love story.
