Amelia woke up to the sound of the ocean.
She blinked as her eyes adjusted to the bright sunlight that filtered through an opening in front. It was partially covered by branches and leaves dancing to a slight breeze. She raised her head a little to look around and felt sand particles stuck on it. Rubbing them away, she touched the floor, it was filled with sand.
Amelia got up and almost fell down again. Her body was stiff and there was a dull throbbing in the back of her head. She held a rock protruding out of the wall for support and stood, counting the steps to the opening. She took in a few deep breaths and slowly walked towards the entrance.
The branches parted to give her a view which took her breath away. She was on a broad ledge, which jutted out of a cliff wall covered in green, and about twenty feet below her, and maybe a couple hundred metres ahead, spread the wide, blue ocean.
Oh my God...I must be dead. Is this heaven?
The realization bothered her. She couldn’t be in heaven. She didn’t deserve to be there.
