Jacqueline Baird was born on the 1st of April at home in a small village Northumbria, England, UK, where she raised. She went to the local village school, and later an all-girls' grammar school where she passed the University of Oxford General Certificate of Education in various subjects. On leaving school she joined the civil service in the then Post Office department.

She met her husband Jim, when she was only eighteen. Eight years later, after working as a hotel receptionist in a five-star hotel in Scotland and traveling abroad for a few years, she came home and married him. They still live in Northumbria and have two grown sons.

Her number one love is writing. She has always been an avid reader, and she had her first success as a writer at the age of eleven, when she won the first prize in the Nature Diary of the Year competition at school. But she always felt a little guilty because her diary was more fiction than fact. Apart from a spell as a hopeful painter in oils, when she actually did have a painting accepted for the Federation of Northern Artists' annual exhibition her real passion was for romance novels. When her sons went to school all day she thought she would try writing one. Jacqueline Baird's been writing for Mills & Boon since 1988, and she still gets a thrill every time a new book is published.

When Jacqueline is not busy writing she likes to spend her time traveling, reading and playing cards. She was a keen sailor until a knee injury ended her sailing days, but she still enjoys swimming in the sea. She visits a gym twice a week now and has made the surprising discovery that she gets some good ideas while doing the mind-numbingly boring exercises on the cycling and weight machines.

Ha, ha. JB was really pushes the limits with this one.

Hero is a PIG.
He impregnated an 18 year-old virgin in a one stand
He made it all about him when she left the next morning without providing additional sex.
He went on to marry a woman he didn’t even like six months later
He’s had five or more women in the nine years they’ve been apart
He hasn’t thought about the heroine until he sees her again by chance.
When he does see her it’s all about replaying the one night stand.
He hasn’t broken it off with his current mistress when he forces the heroine to marry him
He gives his mistress a diamond necklace *after* marrying the heroine
He introduces the mistress to the heroine
His own mother is ashamed of him

Heroine shows flashes of good sense:
She took care of herself and her son for nine years and wrote three books.
She modeled her serial killer villain in her first book after the hero
She threatens (in public) to write a wife killing her husband story after she finds out about the mistress.
She calls her lawyer to find out how viable the hero’s custody threats are.

But for all the flashes – she’s a doormat and takes his STD-riddled self back.

I’ll leave you with this tribute:

P.I.G. an Ode to JB’s Hero

P is for the penis that seeks willing vaginas in which to sheathe
I is for impregnating an 18 year-old virgin in one night beneath
G is for Good God Almighty, why are you allowed to breathe?

Another re-read.

I still hate the horrible hero, and he still needs to be tossed into the fires of Mordor, but bumping a star for...

An awesome heroine (except for falling for the hero) with a spine of steel and the ability to walk away and mean it.

A nice Greek MIL that was sweet and supportive of the heroine rather than the usual condescending, backstabbing witches especially when she smacks down her awful son for being a rotten human being for seducing and impregnating a babe in the woods.

And a hero that gets desperate when he realizes he can't buy, charm, smarm or seduce his wife out of leaving and that, hey, he may just love her.

First review...

Cussing. Lots and lots of CUSSING.

What a fecking asshole, may he writhe and die in the fires of Mordor.

He takes her virginity on her 18th birthday.

He gets angry when he sees her again because she blew him off and who blows off this asshole. He does the blowing off.

He stashes her in a mausoleum of a house decorated by his ex mistress.

He introduces his ex-mistress to her, her SON, and his own mother at a lunch when they run into each other.

He has to jettison the ex-mistress with a diamond necklace at said lunch. Really? You couldn’t messenger it? Die, asshole, die.

UPSIDE:
The one good moment is when the h, a mystery author, sees the ex-mistress wearing her cheapass mistressy diamond necklace at a party and launches into a possible plot where a wife finds out that her husband has cheated on her when she finds the receipt of a diamond necklace in the husband’s pocket. The h leans in and compliments the mistress-woman on what a pretty necklace. It does scare the H for a minute, but get the witch.

Bottom line the BIG FAT IDIOT, so-called hero, does come through with an “I love you” and kind of a grovel so no one star.

Fairly average HP. Typical arrogant HP Greek tycoon H. Nothing particularly stood out there. He was definitely big on the crushing grip and punishing kisses, almost a bit old school on that score.

I did like it that the h wasn't living in abject and pious poverty with her child, but had made a decent living as a writer. Also, she did have a moment of panic when the H threatened to take her child away, but then she calmed down and called a lawyer to find out the real possibilities and not just go on blind fear.

Then again, she definitely did the pious thing as she never moved on from her one night with the H in 9 years.

I know the sexually frozen heroine is a time honored trope in HP land. It makes some furious and some love it. I'm somewhere in the middle.

I look at it like this - if the reunion happens when the secret child is still a toddler, I can buy it. Taking into consideration that the h is pregnant and recovering from pregnancy for the first year and then the sole caretaker of a infant/toddler along with dealing with heartbreak/betrayal, I can buy that she hasn't moved on yet. But, when the child is 8 years old? By that time, I think the envelope has been pushed a bit far Especially when it's noted that the H has not only moved on to a marriage but has also had 4 other mistresses during that time. The heroine was noted as an extremely beautiful woman, I'm sure she had plenty of attention and find it hard to believe that she didn't have chemistry with anyone in 9 years.

I realize that part of this had to do with making the heroine "older and wiser". She was only 18 when they had their night together and the hero was 10 years older. I believe Baird thought the heroine needed to grow up a bit before she was ready for her HEA, but I still don't think 9 years was needed. I'm sure being a single mother will make you grow up quickly. Plus, I just hate those super long separations, it's sad. That's a lot of missing years, especially when there is a child involved that doesn't know one of their parents.

I have not read many books by this author, but the few that I have read have been very good. What I enjoy most about her style is that she can put a lot of angst into a story, but still end up with some very likable characters. This is a story of re-united lovers who after a passionate one night stand 9 years ago come across each other accidentally in a crowded hotel lobby. Neither one can forget that night and of course there were repercussions in the form of an adorable little 8 year old boy...that the hero has no idea exists. The secret baby plot is definitely overdone in the HP line and is not one of my favorites, but was very well done in this story. I think it worked so well because the characters were so lovable. The heroine was very strong, raising a child on her own, becoming a successful writer, having valued friends that provided a tremendous support system and working through the loss of her family. The hero was wonderful in that he wasn't cruel to the heroine and took responsibility for his actions. He actually understood why she made the decisions she did and held himself equally guilty of the consequences.

It's a great read that I highly recommend.

The hero is a pig, that’s all that really matters. Even his mother is ashamed of his behavior.

The best part of the book is the cocktail party where she subtly lets him know...

1. She knows his business dinner the first night back from their honeymoon was with his mistress and he gifted said mistress with a diamond necklace.
2. She didn’t appreciate that he introduced the mistress to her and their son.
3. The serial killer in her first novel was based on him.

He does beg when she announces that she’s done and leaving.

this one did not work 4 me!too cliched! i've read this trope too many times. i felt 4 willow. after all she had been through, teenage pregnancy wid no support, yet she stood up 4 herself n raised dat baby admirably well. while theo was enjoying himself wid his slutty wife n basking in wealth. ofc he claims he had never got over her. why not look 4 her then ? if u dreamed of her time n again n cud not get her out ur mind!? he was no ordinary man, a billionaire surely can make his own rules.

This story wasn't very good for me. The author needs to update this somehow, because in this day and age, there's no way Willow couldn't be able to track down and find this mega corp Tycoon. Granted, Willow didn't WANT to find him and let him know he had fathered a child with her. She wanted to keep this info from him because Willow believed Theo had cheated on his fiance with her. So in Willow's eyes, cheaters are dicks who should be punished and never allowed to meet the child they sired. And Theo was a dick too. He takes Willows virginity, then finds out she's 18, and tracks her down to chew her out for not telling him how old she was. It was fine to bang her when he thought she was a slutty 22 year old who was okay to take advantage of, but now that he knows the truth, he verbally (and publicly) disparages her. And Willow wasn't any better, telling Theo she just used him to shed off this virgin title, so she could see what all the fuss was about. Both of these characters disgusted me. And Theo meeting up to give his mistress her diamond necklace payoff and sendoff right after he marries Willow, and even introduces this slutty (and hateful) side piece to Willow, his son, and his mother???

The ending wasn't a bit of a letdown too. So disappointed.

Angsty, emotional, flighty (and hot)story.

The decision and stupid mistakes both main characters did in the beginning grated on my nerves so much. But that was nowhere near with my frustration and dislike with hero’s actions. Especially which included a mistress, and an ex wife which all came after meeting heroine and getting intimate with her!
And don’t get me started on the long separation. 9 years!! Wasted😕.
Separations for long period always bothers me. Especially if it happens without solid reason. Here heroine had that but not hero. Instead he got back with his ex girlfriend, married her, divorced then had another mistresses!! I hated that he didn’t chase her after initial conversation. Their second chance meeting was pure coincidence. And that mistress fiasco... arrogant, insensitive swine.
How the heroine handled that and made hero sweat in that scene was the highlight of the book.
The hero’s actions were tolerable (atleast to me) because heroine was so strong and independent. She became a famous author and brought up their son without any family or support. Hats off to her and all the single mothers out there.

The stars ⭐️ are only for her, the writing style and for the gripping-crazy plot.
No epilogue.
Still I enjoyed part of it and their volatile relationship.
Recommended on your on risk.

I have been meaning to review this one for a while, and my GR feed reminded me. The H was awful. The h was feisty, and despite her TBS, she already showed signs of being able to resist the H. I am convinced that she will eventually escape him, and that he will die mysteriously, but due to his history of promiscuity there will be too many possible suspects and his murder will never be solved. This mystery will spur her book sales to ever higher levels, and she will become a billionaire.

DNF @ 20% - too many strikes

- 10 year separation after ONS where older man takes the h’s v-card

- H doesn’t look for h, instead he marries his mistress

- they only interact again by chance

- the h kept their kid a secret for 10 years

I went looking for reviews and see that it doesn’t improve.

I’m out. ✌🏻

The story begins with the hero Theo arriving home to discover his sister having a party, it is there he meets the heroine Willow. Theo is enthralled by Willow's gentle and shy nature and they spend the night together. However, circumstance and the actions of Theo's ex cause Willow to leave, and Theo is left frustrated as he felt that there was something between him and Willow. Ten years later and Theo is beyond pleased to see Willow again and surprised to learn that she is a very successful writer now. Willow can't hider her shock, and fear, at seeing Theo again and she is even more shocked when he tells her he wants to have a relationship with her. But Willow's skittish behaviour arouses Theo's suspicions and he is livid when he discovers she has a son, his son. He wants to be a part of his son's life and he knows in his heart that he and Willow belong together. But Willow finds it difficult to trust him again despite the passion between them.

I really enjoyed this book, it is full of emotion and very well written. I adored the hero Theo, he is totally alpha and yes, at times, he behaved badly but I really felt he cared for the heroine and wanted a chance to fall in love with her. Willow is an interesting heroine, quite complex with a very shy and introverted personality, I really responded to her. OK, the plot is a little clichéd, but it is done really well.

Overall, this is an interesting and well written book.

Super-generic with a really embarrassing title but luckily I read everything on my phone and actually I loved it! The hero was surprisingly nice (most of the time) and was trying to make things up to her from early on. I don't think he did a single mean thing to her, in fact, despite being pretty mad at the initial reveal. Very forgettable with all the usual tropes but still nicely done and an enjoyable little read. Not 5-star cos I'm not gonna remember it past tomorrow, but still 4 stars because there was literally nothing I hated about it. And his apology/confession went on for quite a few happy pages!

The H as is usual in Harlequin is a douchebag fit only to seduce a virgin teenager, 'h' having just ended a relationship and then marry go back and marry his ex 6 months later. Of course the h goes through with the teen pregnancy and then when they meet a few years later is a born again virgin who will immediately marry him despite being a 'successful' author complete with film rights conveniently forgetting H's tendencies towards mistresses. Seriously even the last chapter is so damning with no actual true remorse from the H but just a belated realization only because the h is on the verge of leaving and confesses her love and not having slept with anyone except him.

One of the best works i read by Baird so far.

So far exciting and so romantic,i love every bit of it.
The hot angst and romance between the powerful businessman Theo and the one beauty that has held his heart captivated ever since he first laid eyes on her,Willow.

Jacqueline Baird is a good writer, and while i have read some books by her that lacks some passion..this book is filled with it,and she has done a amazing job at it.

I Love Willow and Theo so much.Their love-story is filled with intense attraction, hot angst and bittersweet love.

Excellent read and definitely worth a re-read. I’ll keep this book.

I don’t understand all the bad reviews about the H. He has as a 28-year old man sex with what he thought was the roommate of his sister. He didn’t know the h was only 18 years old then. He heard that from his sister the next morning.

And even if he did know: 18 and 28 years old is a big age difference, but it’s not a shocking age difference. So he didn’t know the h was an 18-year old virgin when he had sex with her. The h was not drunk or something like that. She wanted to have sex with him, like he wanted to have sex with her. Two consenting adults here.

The next morning she leaves without telling him. He comes after her, but at the airport she lies to him that she only used him because she wanted to know more about sex. He doesn’t want to let her go, but of course he was hurt when she said that she had just used him and she didn’t want to go back with him. The h didn’t tell him then that she had spoken to the other woman and she should have.

And yes, he had girlfriends and he was married and divorced in the 9 years between the one night sex and the time they met again. But the man is 37. Should he have been celibate for 9 years for a woman who said she had used him and who refused to stay with him? You gotta be kidding. He didn’t know he was ever going to see her back.

And he had always been thinking about her in those 9 years. But life goes on. He had a girlfriend when he met the h again. The marriage with the h was only a few days after they met again. He was gentle enough to not break the relationship with his former girlfriend off by phone or text. He broke it off in a decent way with a necklace to thank her and to explain he was married and their relationship was therefore over.

So I don’t think this was a bad man who deserves to be cooked in boiling hot water or whatever. I actually liked the hero. He is passionate and protective.

Jacqueline Baird is one of my favourite writers. I enjoyed the read. A virgin h and an alpha male H who relentlessly pursues the h. Love that.

I can tolerate revolting Hs and usually even doormat hs but this was too disgusting to read so I skimmed. JB likes her rotten Hs to treat their hs foully, call them names, forcibly seduce refuse any hint of emotional connection or liking or respect, then in last 10 pages suddenly realize he is in love. The h, who has finally managed to clear her head and plans to dump him now falls in a puddle of goo and loves him back.

JB writes well enough that this somehow works but not this time. Ugh. As St Margaret says he is probably riddled with STDs.

I don’t buy the HEA, not because of him but I think she will eventually emerge from lust and infatuation and realize H is 10 years older than she, her son needs good influences and the H is a selfish manipulator.

Reread, like somewhat better, upping to 2 stars because I read the whole thing this time.

Baird has a gift with this plot line. This is probably the 3rd book of hers that I have read with a plot centering around a secret child and big misunderstanding, but I still come back for more - even though I really want to shake her characters at certain points in the story. In this one it was when

There's a reason I don't read Harlequin books very often; They all have the same formula and follow it to a T. At the same time, I can't help picking them up every once in awhile and reading them like the little guilty pleasures they are. Super alpha male, super beautiful naive virgin girl(w/violet eyes no less)...yadda yadda yadda..throw in a baby sometimes..big misunderstandings with other people who may or may not be former lovers and end with a big I love you confession from the rake, which of course we knew was his problem all along --- and repeat! :-) I'm off to read the next one..
