A child is killed by a stray bullet at Seattle's largest summer festival. The young man who pulled the trigger comes from an old family with power and connections. He's used to getting away with his mistakes, and his father is one of the city's richest attorneys. Brunelle must fight against top-tier attorneys, unscrupulous defense experts, and even personal health challenges to avenge the senseless murder of an innocent child. This is a story that thrives on its simplicity—a straightforward narrative where justice unfolds in an enjoyable courtroom drama. There are no shocking twists or labyrinthine deceptions; the villains are unveiled early, their incompetence as striking as their reprehensibility. While their lack of cunning could have dulled the tale, it instead amplifies the charm of the heroes’ dogged pursuit of justice. The repeated, almost effortless wins by the protagonists transform into a celebration of persistence and moral clarity, making every small victory deeply satisfying.
What truly elevates the story is how it leans into this clarity. By stripping away the need for elaborate surprises, the focus sharpens on the courtroom exchanges and the delightful interplay between wit and justice. The heroes’ triumphs are not dazzling feats of genius but quiet, steady reminders that sometimes, doing the right thing with conviction is enough.
I'm accustomed to most of the previous entries of the Brunelle series with cases that kept me on the edge of my seat with stress, drama, shocks, etc. This one was a bit on the tame side, though, with much of the direction very obvious (and even at times predictable). I was pretty surprised how easily some things worked out in some areas, with little or weak pushback. There were times I'd think there HAD to be a wrench thrown in to shake things up to be more thrilling, but....nah. It really was that easy, I guess.
However, as I said, the journey along the way was entertaining anyway. It kept my attention, and as per usual, I was greatly intrigued by the case and wanted to see how it'd work out (even despite some of the predictability). It was great to be back in Brunelle's world, and I appreciated the acknowledgement of his growth and age. He felt like a mature version of himself in past entries, which was a welcome realization. The writing style was as quickly paced as I remember, with no sluggish moments. Sure, there were grammatical errors, but nothing overbearing.
If I had to complain about anything, though, it was the rather glaring oversight on the author's part, at least to me. Unless you've read the synopsis, this may be spoiler territory, so look away if you don't wanna know the specifics. But you know the child that caught the stray bullet that triggered the entire case? Well, that bullet's trajectory went through the kid's heart. It was a major plot point in the case and thus carried a lot of the weight. It's just a pity that earlier in the story, I read THIS little tidbit: "The bullet had pierced the boy’s skull." *facepalm* Editor? Hello?
At an rate, I still had fun reading this entry after yet another break from legal thrillers. Thinking I'll need to once more pay a visit. For my random commentary and highlights, click here.

And so the book binge began ... this series turned out to be a gripping and masterfully crafted collection of legal dramas set against the backdrop of Seattle’s criminal justice system. The series follows David Brunelle, a dedicated and sharp prosecutor, as he navigates the complexities of law, morality, and justice. What makes this series stand out is the balance between intense courtroom drama with deeply human stories. David Brunelle is an intriguing character - intelligent, principled, and yet flawed in ways that make him even more relatable. Mr. Penner’s writing easily brings the legal world to life with authenticity, offering a fascinating glimpse into the challenges prosecutors face, from gathering evidence to battling wily defense attorneys. Each book in the series presents a unique and thought-provoking case, often delving into some morally ambiguous territory. i like this series, what a nice present to get this ebook free for xmas had to stop myself from reading it in one day
he was at the park with his girlfriend cop and a man with a gun sticking out of his pocket was confronted by police. instead of doing what they said he pulled the gun and fired , missing the cops but hitting a 4 yr old boy and killing him instantly in the heart
his fathers law firm represented him and said it was the cops fault and the boy would have died from a heart defect (which he didnt have) so he should be found innocent
the prosecution lawyer is having heart beating problems, he passes out from double beating he just found out he has this
they had the trial and he was looking for the girlfriend that was at the park at the time of the shooting, they had hidden her somewhere and the pi couldnt find her
but the woman lawyer on the other side got tired of how she was being treated and she told him where the woman was
he put her on the stand and she said he was hoping to shoot someone in the heart at the park with the poors. he got mad and tried to run out of the courtroom but was stopped
it took the jury no time at all to find him guilty i dont think they said the sentence, i would have liked to hear what it was

I read the entire book without stopping. Most of the characters were so real that I felt like I knew them. Though I didn't expect the last witness to explain that the killer had planned the entire murder.
Good legal story with the woke side of the US being displayed in all its glory or ridiculous nature as you believe. The privileged view is well presented and the dangerous results of using money to stifle justice is seen. Very different and quick ending.
Great storyline about Justice and how money and influence can tip the scales in favor of the rich. It also highlights how the Justice System depends upon honest people to uphold the law.
Such an easy read with a good pace. Anyone who likes a good legal thriller this is your book. You won't want to put it down. 4 stars are for how well written this series has been.
There's nothing like a great courtroom drama and this was a really really good one. I love the characters in this series and I'm looking forward to the next one...
This book grabbed me right from the beginning!! I couldn’t put it down. It has so many twists and turns and it’s fast paced. Do yourself a favor and read it.
I really enjoy how the main character Dave Brunelle gives a great opening statement & keeps looking for clues right to the end . This is a fun story to read.
