Paper, Scissors, Sculpt!: Creating Cut-and-Fold Animals

Rate this book
Score the paper, make a cut, and give it a fold; that’s gupit-gupit, the art of creating amazing three-dimensional sculptures. The name comes from Tagalog, the national language of the Philippines, and it means “cut cut.” Master Ben A. Gonzales, a native Filipino, illustrates all the techniques in this unique collection of paper animals—and both kids and adults will love constructing them. It’s easy: Each creature is made from only a single sheet, directions are laid out in a straightforward manner, and the nice large patterns proceed logically from simple forms to the more complicated. (The number of stars next to each project gives the level of difficulty.) Choose from a butterfly, bear, kangaroo, swan, squirrel, Tyrannosaurus rex, whale, and many others.

So, you like the idea of origami but find all that folding tedious?
Maybe you want that paper rabbit to…well, look like a rabbit?

This book might be for you.
An easy method to cut and bend paper to make 3D animals.

While it does take some practice (and following the instructions) this method is much more intuitive then origami and the results are impressive.

Notes
Great book for the inspiring artist.

Learning Curve
Low: Includes some easy exercises but most are geared a more mature student.

This book is great because it has many, many designs that you can copy and have kids cut out to use as templates. The downside is that the designs are hard for elementary age students to figure out and fold. It's not a book about making creative, original art, but more of a how-to on creating folded animals. It might be a good introduction to this type of folded paper art for kids who are really into it.
