I feared the sea, but he dragged me beneath the waves.
The Handlers came and left. They took my best friend, but I was untouched. After graduation, I didn’t have amazing plans. I just wanted to stay home. But my parents had other ideas.
Forced to join them on a vacation, I found myself on an island surrounded by water. Dragged a boat, I had no choice but to face my fears.
Riftan, Hexon, and Rowan from the kingdoms down below—three men who played with their food took an interest in me. No one knew there was a kingdom beneath the sea. Now that they had me, what would they do with me?
Normally, they share, but this time, Riftan had me first. Instead of peeling the flesh from my bones, they took care of me. I should hate them, but the kindness they’ve shown me… Confuses me.
They take what they want. But maybe they’re right…. Maybe I want this too.
Content This book includes scenes that may disturb some readers, featuring multiple men drawn to one woman, non-consensual situations, dub-con, graphic sexual scenes, MMF, kidnapping, imprisonment, sexual assault, phobia, and more.
I was lucky enough to be blessed with an ARC of this book. I have a (probably disturbing but none the less) fascination with monster dark romance books. So, I have been trying to read any and all that’s not your traditional vampire or werewolf. I loved this story, it has a bunch of spice - definitely read the trigger warnings if triggers are something that are important to you. But it also has characters that you end up loving. A woman and her 3 monster men. It’s a little like a reverse and very naughty Little Mermaid if you will LOL There is a HEA. This is my first book by JP Sina but will not be the last.
I didn't care for the story, I know it's not meant to be realistic but it was just waaaaaay out there for me. If you like a fast paced smutty book with an okay plot and story then this is for you. Personally not my style, the trigger warnings didn't bother me. It was more the FMC and the inconsistencies with the character development.
2.5 stars. I received this as an arc. I am a tad scared of tentacles but that didn’t stop me. I was very confused most of the time about multiple details. It felt as though there were several things missing and small details lost and I spent the first half figuring out what was going on. I still am not sure who is related to who and whether there is incest even though they are different species? Also none of these men know what boundaries or consent is as well as a kind of god complex? He was asking for her gem then called her gem? And he wanted to eat her and then suddenly flipped a switch and loved her? I just wasn’t super into the story and didn’t bond with any of the characters. Towards the end I struggled to not dnf. To sum up. “Hey I just kidnapped you and this is crazy so take my knot and call me maybe”
I am obsessed with this cover - its perfect!! It totally sums up the dark and mythical plot that this story is about to give..
What a trip! I dived straight into the deep with this dark, twisted and deprived story...and... I loved it😍 Sometimes being a book girle isn't for the weak.. I recommend checking TWs..
Tropes 🌊 Monster Romance 💦 Why Chose 🌊 Forced Proximity 💦 Captive 🌊 HEA
Amora, an 18 year old has a fear of the ocean and is forced onto a boat and taken out to sea by her parents in an attempt to overcome her fear. Little did she know that trip would change her life. It's then she meets Riftan. She's dragged to the depth of the waters and is kidnapped and held hostage by him and two other sea creatures....
That was the perfect start to a dark romance story.. No treading waters on this one you are thrown straight into the deep end with all the triggers ( pun intended)
JP Sina made me feel everything, i was drained from every emotion.. She had me hating and rooting for the "bad guys" at the same time! It was impossible not to like Riftan, Rowan and Hexon. They were possessive and protective over their gem. Amora, was a strong and sassy FMC, a life of having no control and although powerless in her situation she's a fighter, she can give back.. I connected to each character, they all had different personalities and brought different qualities to the story.
I loved the writing style- short chapters , nice flow to the story and, nothing was rushed. I loved how their story unfolded! The author made sure to pack each scene with descriptive details, emotions and angst. She had me feeling all sorts -impatience, rage, frustration, the lot!! This is my first book i have read by JP Sina and it's also my first romance book that involved sea creatures (another virginity lost!) and wow! 🥵😍 I will admit there's a trigger on here that was testing my boundaries BUT i was gripped in the pages! Thank you for giving me a GREAT reading experience!! I NEED to know what happens next!! ? ✨5 /5 ✨
✨ Thank you to JP Sina for giving me this opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for my honest review ✨
Tentacles, Sea Monsters, Spice, oh my! Marked by the Sea is a dark why choose monster romance and I am so here for it. I love dark romance then add in a merman, kracken and sea sprite, it’s the perfect combo!
I found both worlds above and below the sea to be quite intriguing and would love to learn even more about them. The spice in this book is off the charts good. Like thigh clenching, skin tingling, breath hitching good. I really enjoyed the relationship between all the main characters and how they all fit together *wink wink*.
Overall definitely recommend this spicy underwater adventure, you won’t regret it.
This is only the send book I have read in the monster romance genre and let me tell you I am not obsessed! This book was fantastic! It was short and such an easy read and was very spicy 🥵
This book had Amora who is human, Riftan who is a merman and Hexon who is a Kraken and Rowan who is a water faerie! Ugh I loved this book.
If you like book where the FMC is kidnapped and falls in love with 3 hot dudes well monsters this is the book for you!
The book had the perfect amount of drama and spice!
I don't like hating on a book but this one is a trauma for me. The girl acts like a pick me. With the "doesn't he want me?🥺" While she had two guys fucking her. And I cannot with the fact that to brothers were fucking eachother and being like "wait baby." TO YOUR OWN BROTHER. I honestly wish I never read it in my life.
What a quick and thrilling read! From the first page, I was hooked and couldn’t put this book down. This was my first read by J.P. Sena, and I was immediately impressed. The plot was unique, and the spice level? Perfect. It kept me on the edge of my seat, and I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next.
The story follows Amora, our fearless but reluctant FMC, who has a deep-seated fear of the sea. Her family’s vacation on a yacht is the last place she wants to be. But things take an unexpected turn when she finds herself drawn to Riftan, a mysterious and dangerously alluring merman. Not only is Riftan a merman, but he's also a prince of the sea—and he’s got a dark history. Along with his two brothers, Heoxon (a kraken) and Rowan (a sea fae), Riftan has a habit of luring victims into the water for his own twisted pleasure before he and his brothers feast on them. But when he pulls Amora overboard, things take a wild turn.
Held captive by these mythical creatures, Amora becomes an unwilling pawn in their deadly game. They plan to use her—and then kill her when they’re done. But as time passes, something unexpected happens: they begin to feel a connection to her, one that they’re unwilling to let go of. The chemistry between the characters was fire—and I’m not just talking about the steam! I was completely captivated by the dynamic between Amora and the three brothers, and the tension kept building in all the right ways. The world-building was rich and immersive, and Sena’s writing made it so easy to get lost in the story.
If you love dark fantasy romance with a healthy dose of danger, forbidden attraction, and characters who you just can’t stop rooting for—even when they’re clearly playing with fire—this book is for you. I’ll definitely be reading more from J.P. Sena in the future. Can’t wait to see what comes next in this world!
*Be sure to check the trigger warnings prior to reading
let's start with this beautiful cover .. it had me in on the line immediately. I mean, who doesn't love some monster smut here and there ! 🤭
Amora has a phobia of the sea, but that doesn't stop her parents from dragging her out on a boat in the middle of it. Petrified, that's when she meets Riftan, whos looking for a distraction and drags her below the waves.
Riftan, Hexon and Rowan like to play with their food .. and they can't get enough of their latest meal.
this was a quick, fast paced read with not much world building, but it had buckets of smut, three men with lots of tentacles, and a happy ending!
I have thalassophobia and it was interesting to read a dark monster romance involving that and a merman. And a kraken. And a fae.
I’m just saying, if you read the authors note and find yourself wanting to read this then go for it. I had fun and was happy with how the book ended. I can’t wait for the next one though. I’m hopeful for more of these characters.
DNF at 35%. The cover of this is so absolutely dreamy, I’m so obsessed. I was hoping for a really mystical romance between a merman and a human and it’s partially on me for not fully reading the description, but this book is like entirely smut. If that’s your vibe, all power to you! It’s just not mine.
It’s like 2AM while I’m writing this so pardon my lack of writing sophistication. In fact, I’m going to put my thoughts in bullet points because it’s easier for me that way as a really sleepy girl at the moment.
✨I flew this book SO FAST, finished it in one sitting, but it is pretty fast-paced so it’s great for a quick and spicy read!
✨The heroine, Amora, is a sassy but HUGELY h0rny human woman. My girl got kidnapped by monsters and she was like, “you know what? I’m gonna enjoy this and also more please” 💅 IDK if I blame her, I saw the character art of the said monsters who took her and well 🤌🥵
✨I immediately loved Riftan, the King of the North Seas, because he’s so unapologetically morally-grey. Although, he might just be that way because you know, he’s not human?? This is literally a monster romance so I can’t really apply human morality to him 🤣
✨He is one HOT merman with a fancy peen 🧜♂️
✨Oh and did I mention that this is a why-choose, MMFM?? Oh yeah, YUM 🤤
✨We got Hex, a massive Kraken with half human form, and Rowan, a sea faerie. They are in a relationship so swords cross and they’re great together!
✨Did I mention there’s a kraken? So you know TENTACLES 🐙 and do I really need to spell out what the tentacles did to our h0rny little human woman?
✨So like I don’t want to spoil it but take a guess on how our sweet faerie Rowan “hydrates” Amora while she’s all kidnapped and stuck on a rock at sea. Nope, it’s not through down there. Makes you think huh? 😗😗😗
✨They all /did it/ A LOT, I ain’t complaining. In fact, can I have more please?
✨The ending is perfect, but I’m honestly so interested on what comes next.
✨BOOK TWO PLEASE?
No seriously! I enjoyed this quick and spicy monster romance book. No notes 💅
A quick and fun story- I read it in one morning. It has everything you could want in a monster romance but something was missing for me- I think I wished it was longer so that we could really dig into this undersea world.
I mark things I find "wrong" in books with blue highlighter in the Kindle app. I marked 18 such passages in the FIRST 2 chapters.
The FMC is "freshly turned 18" and has "only been out of school for 24 hours," which would've been a deal-breaker in-and-of itself. That's too young and too inexperienced.
But this girl is clearly 13. I don't understand how, I don't understand why, I find myself concerned and weirded out. This book reads like a One Direction fanfiction written by a 13 year old.
She has rich, vain, and neglectful parents who dragged her to the Bahamas and then dragged her kicking and screaming onto a boat. Here's the quote that made me quit the book:
"My eyes filled with water. His words were a betrayal. I can’t, and I quote, disrespect her, but she can play with me and my fear to her heart’s content.
“I’m not skulking around. I’m relaxing, and I haven’t been cooped up in my room. I go out! I’m not the one who told you to drag me along on this trip! Stop pushing me!”"
This is gross. A high spice book should not contain a character this young / immature
Everything about this book kinda just sucks. The plot is unfocused, the writing is fundamentally poor, and even the smut is weak. Undoubtedly the worst part, however, is having to sit through the author's Jughead-esque "in case you haven't noticed, I'm edgy. I'm an edgelord. I don't fit in." author's note at the beginning. I should have taken it for the red flag it was and put down the book immediately.
I don’t read a lot of monster romances, and this was my first time reading one as an ARC. The tentacles were definitely a first for me, and it was an interesting twist! I liked the story overall. "Why Choose" isn't usually my thing, but I actually enjoyed it in this book. I’d recommend it to anyone who loves monster romances, but be sure to check the trigger warnings beforehand.
An interesting read about a human female who is afraid of deep water being chosen by the merman king. It was really cool reading about the intricacies of an underwater life. Read to find out if the FMC can overcome her fear and find a way to breathe underwater, or not survive and just be a temporary fling for the merman king.
Honestly the writing was really juvenile. Insta love, full of plot holes, and no redeemable characteristics for the love interests. Also they just brushed over that they ate all the girls before her?

OMG, what did I just dive into?! From the moment I opened Marked by the Sea, I was pulled into a dark, stormy world of intense monster love that’s part fantasy, part horror, and entirely unforgettable! This is not your typical love story—it’s a gritty, wild romance with a supernatural twist that plunges headfirst into forbidden passions and the eerie allure of creatures from the deep. 🌌💦
Here’s the scoop: Our main character is trying to live a normal life but gets swept away—quite literally—into a world beneath the waves, where there’s more lurking than just saltwater and kelp. Enter Riftan, Hexon, and Rowan, three alluring but dangerous mermen with a taste for humans. And while they usually “play with their food,” things get really spicy 🥵 when Riftan claims her first, leading to a strange mix of fear, excitement, and steamy scenes that are anything but ordinary.
What Worked for Me 💜: The Deep-Sea Dark Fantasy: Imagine a mermaid fairytale but… add kraken tentacles, razor-sharp teeth, and seriously complicated emotions. Sina does a fantastic job of blending fear with intrigue and seduction, creating a totally unique dark-romance vibe. 🌊🐙💀
Unexpected Vulnerability: Despite the raw, often dangerous moments, there’s this strange tenderness between the characters. It’s as if, for the first time, these savory sea beasts have found someone who both fears and desires them. The complexity is a chef’s kiss! 💋💘
Fantasy Meets Spice 🔥: Be prepared for things to get intense. This book is heavy on the spice, with scenes that explore boundaries and taboos. Definitely check the content warnings—this is not for the faint-hearted. ⚠️
A Few Bumps 🦑: Dark Themes: As the warning suggests, this book delves into heavy themes of captivity, dub-con, and dark romance that won’t sit well with everyone. Some scenes were definitely hard to read and may be triggering for some readers.
Wish for a Little More Backstory: While we’re given snippets of the underwater world, I found myself craving more detail about these mermen, their kingdom, and how these dynamics evolved. I mean, what’s the deal with Riftan and his gang?! 😳. future stories ????
Overall, if you’re looking for a dark, spicy dive into monster romance that explores fear, desire, and forbidden connections in a world below the waves, Marked by the Sea is sure to be a guilty pleasure. But beware—it’s a story that’ll make you rethink “a trip to the beach.” 🐚
I have been in my tentacle romance era and came across Marked by the Sea and LOVED the cover. This was my first work by JP Sina and there is no turning back now. I dove into the deep end with this dark and twisted monster romance and did not want to come up for air. I read this in one sitting! Hook, line, and sinker because I cannot wait for more of the Monsters’ Mates series to come out!
Marked by the Sea is a dark, why-choose, monster romance and the TWs are long. Please check those TWs before reading and stay safe, friends!
For all you tentacle-loving, dark romance fiends…this one is for you!

Amora narrowly missed being taken by The Handlers, and in celebration of her 18th birthday, her parents are forcing her on a family vacation since there might not be a chance for another one. With an intense fear of the sea, Amora is dreading the island trip and is forced to face her fears.
While on a boat, something catches Amora’s attention mid-panic attack, halting her spiralling. When she investigates the noise she hears, she comes face to face with the most devastatingly handsome man she has ever seen…but he’s not human.
Riftan: the merprince with captivating eyes the color of the waters Amora fears has his sights set on his new toy before he has to take responsibility for his kingdom.
Hexon: the kraken with a devilish glint in his red eyes and an immense amount of tentacles, and he’s not afraid to use them.
Rowan: the sea sprite with a gentle soul and the most in tune with his emotions.
Although Amora feared the sea, Riftan dragged her beneath the waves to appease his appetite before duty calls, and he plans to share his Gem with his brothers. These three men tend to play with their food before they eat it…but instead of turning Amora into a grisly meal, they show some kindness. Confused by their actions, Amora tries to figure out her fate and if the guys are right…that she might want what they’re offering.
If you enjoy morally gray men who have a darkened past and twisted intentions, but are willing to give them a chance to be redeemed, then do yourself a favor and read this one!
Amora has an uncontrollable fear of the sea, so when her parents demand she go with them on vacation, the Bahamas wasn't her first choice. While aboard a yacht, she sees a man watching her. He draws her in and steals her overboard. Riftan is the Prince of the South Seas. His desire for a human toy leads him to Amora, and he can't resist her appeal. He and his brothers Hexon and Rowan, a kraken and a sea faerie, bring her to their hideout, where they plan to use her then off her. However, the more time the sea monsters spend with Amora, the less they are able to abandon her to the sea. Riftan's hand is f0rced when the acting king discovers Amora. Will a centuries old myth save her? Or is she doomed to drown?
I've been watching this story get closer to the top of my arc tbr for weeks now, and today was the day! Amora is a girl in a tough situation, but she wasn't afraid to defend herself until the very end. Riftan, Hexon, and Rowan were all unique and memorable but cohesive in their brotherly unit. I loved how each guy had their own approach to winning over Amora, and she was living for the attention. The ending was surprising, but it definitely ended on a high note. Their story was fast-paced and enjoyable, especially since it was filled with fancy monster equipment and no shortage of skills in usage
