"While not writing, I told the poet Ryka Aoki that I had run out of things to say. She told me *writing isn't a reservoir, it's a river.* For decades, oil seeped into Newtown Creek from nearby refineries. Its cleanup remains unfinished. In 2021, around the time the first COVID vaccine rolled out, when it seemed possible to imagine a future again, the Newtown Creek Nature Walk opened. Part art, part park, part green infrastructure, the path winds around the largest sewage treatment plant in the city, a collage of the organic and industrial. Ryka reminded me I had a choice to return to the flow" (76).
