Broken people trying to make their way back to hope. Stories of identity, divorce, sexuality, parenting, domestic violence, and the working-class migrant experience. Bestselling poet Koraly Dimitriadis’s debut collection will transport you into the minds of disenfranchised characters, troubled men, children who live in two homes, and women trying to break free.
I devoured this excellent book in one sitting. Finally, a much needed voice in gritty truth literature. Enjoyed all the stories but especially the first person formatted ones. The anger and grief of some these characters rings true because so many Greek migrants kids experienced significant trauma of parentification, degradation, repression and intolerance. Their parents also went through racism and trauma but many just passed that down to their kids. Poignant, honest and skilled writing. Highly recommended reading.
These stories will grip you and stay with you. There’s a raw honesty in these “inner “ voices .The stories feel lived , not just told. The reader senses the fragility, despair , anger , pain, hope and hopelessness . The themes are many from illness , loneliness, the migrant experiences and expectations across all the generations. Voices from the estranged, the overlooked, the lost and those finding courage to be true.Koraly doen’t hold back , the stories cut deep , highly recommended reading .
