Rate this book
From images in black and white to inventive gadgets, the golden age of SF film, and pictures from the flying saucer era, these paintings capture the range of Hugo Award-winner Vincent Di Fate’s achievements. More than 100 color artworks complement a vigorous, vivacious text by the artist himself. Space chases, futuristic supermen, machines born of dreams or nightmares, and each illustration is a voyage of the imagination.

I have to say that I was not expecting to stumble across this book when I did so you can only imagine the speed at which I plucked it off the shelf, so declaring that I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book is an utter understatement.
This book is one of those titles that you have seem so many references to and hints of its contents that you almost dare not read it for fear of disappointment - something I can say never happened. The art work is crisp and perfectly presented with text surrounding much of it (rather than all the comments, interviews and facts being gather up and shunted in to a lesser read chapter somewhere else.)
This book to me hails back to the golden age of science fiction where wonder and spectacle were the order of the day. Everything was bright and brash and wanted to tell its story to you in so many different ways. Ironically many of the pieces were created long after these days has waned which to me says if anything that I am not the only one who still loves to look back and marvel and dream, the only difference is that Vincent Di Fate is so skilled he realise them on the page while I can only marvel

Vincent di Fate's baroque "star castle" spaceships are instantly recognizable to any regular SF reader -- he's known as a 'gadget man', and rather laments his typecasting -- especially since he doesn't get to paint as many pretty girls as he would like.

Di Fate started illustrating for Analog some 30 years ago, and it was a real trip down Memory Lane to see the old magazine illos....

Lots more samples at di Fate's nice website: http://www.vincentdifate.com

4.5. Really cool find! I’m a BIG fan of Vincent Di Fate’s artwork so I grabbed this as soon as I saw it at a bookstore. Really appreciate the amount of high resolution artwork and accompanying explanations for every single piece. This also includes 3 essays by Di Fate, and while I enjoyed reading them they were mostly pretty irrelevant to the actual artwork and didn’t feel particularly cohesive with the book.
