As someone new looking into self publishing and trying to learn all that they can, this was a helpful book. It has some great advice so that you don't just throw money at advertising without doing your homework first. I think this book encourages you to go in cautiously, but also to do a lot of research. You can't read this book and expect to be an expert, but it does help make you more aware of pitfalls you can run into and how to cautiously navigate your learning experience as you go. After doing more research, I plan to come back to this book and hope that I can get even more out of it.
Grow Your Book Sales Without Growing Gray Hairs Dale L. Roberts has, as usual, delivered a pack of practical advice with Advertising for Books: A Guide to Promoting & Selling with the Largest Online Bookseller. As a regular listener to his YouTube podcasts, I’m already familiar with his approachable style and thorough research. Having his distilled expertise in book form is even better as he guides you through the maze of Amazon advertising. As a writer, I’ve struggled with marketing and advertising—especially regarding Amazon ads, which have felt like a black hole for my budget. Dale’s book changed that. His discussion of relevance—both perceived and algorithmic—is a revelation. It’s clear that to impact the Amazon platform, you must focus on cold, hard sales. While other strategies, like embedding sample chapters on a website or garnering reviews, might be helpful, consistent sales are the key to building relevance in Amazon’s algorithm. Dale’s emphasis on ensuring your product is retail-ready, and his insights into providing a positive customer experience are often overlooked by writers more focused on their craft than their customers. As someone who finds the Amazon Ads platform baffling, I was relieved to read Dale’s advice that sponsored ads rule the roost while lock screen ads are best avoided. Dale writes how he speaks: friendly, approachable, and refreshingly succinct. I enjoyed his analogy about running Amazon ads, which was like growing multiple plants in one pot—where each plant competes for limited nutrients- to clarify how to optimize ad spending. Most importantly, Dale doesn’t push readers into adopting Amazon’s advertising model. He’s honest about the need for a budget, patience, and a willingness to learn. This is not a magic bullet but a guide to understanding and mastering the process. This book is an essential tool for anyone looking to navigate the complexities of advertising books on Amazon. I left feeling informed, empowered, and ready to refine my strategy.

I’ve been using Amazon paid Ads for over 12 months and thought I had it pretty well cracked (as much as you can crack Amazon!). That was until I read this book by Dale L Roberts. It soon became evident that there isn’t much he doesn’t know on this subject, and he delivers the priceless information in a professional, easy to understand way. I picked up valuable tips which I didn’t know and I’d never find out on my own, and which I’ve fed into my advertising programs to use moving forward. Not only that, but I now have a much clearer understanding of how Amazon Ads work, much of which I’d just accepted before, so I feel more confident in my decision making. This book is an invaluable resource for anyone wanting to get serious with advertising books on the Amazon platform. Definitely recommended!
I’ve seen it written that an indie author will spend more time on non-writing activities than butt-in-chair writing. Advertising is one of those necessary evils if you want to have a better chance at making a living off your books. Dale Roberts’ latest book puts the keys to running an Amazon ads campaign in your hands.
This is the most detailed breakdown of the ins and outs of Amazon ads I’ve come across. Not only does Dale show you how to design and set up your ad, he shows you how to track its effectiveness and how to make adjustments. There’s also good information in this book on book advertising in general and prepping your book beyond just Amazon ads.
After reading through it, I’m not sure Amazon ads are for me at this time, but this book is certainly one I’ll revisit when I’m ready.

Amazon advertising presents unique challenges compared to other media platforms. However, the author had effectively demystified this topic, offering valuable insights and detailed explanations on how to succeed in this area. While there may not be a one-size-fits-all solution, his guidance certainly simplifies the process and helps navigate common obstacles. I am eager to apply this newly acquired knowledge. I’m sure it will bring better results. Highly recommended.
I’ve read other books that deal with Amazon ads and they tend to over complicate things. Not this book. Dale offers a no-nonsense approach to Amazon ads in a way that is easy to follow and without talking down to you. I appreciated the chapter on measuring success and how to set up the dashboard. I’ll get back to it when analyzing my next campaign.
A clear and comprehensive guide to running Amazon ad campaigns With Advertising for Books: A Guide to Promoting & Selling with the Largest Online Bookseller, Dale L. Roberts ensures that authors are well-equipped to navigate the world of Amazon advertising. The strength of this book is Roberts’ ability to break down the complex and intimidating subject of Amazon Ads into easily digestible steps.
Packed with valuable insights Instead of jumping straight into creating an ad, Roberts starts by laying down the groundwork for a successful campaign. He stresses how crucial it is to have a killer book cover, an engaging book description, and a competitive price for any advertising effort. As he points out, “If you can’t dial in the fundamentals, how can you ever expect to get results from ads?”
Following this, Roberts explains the importance of perceived and algorithmic relevance to Amazon's recommendation system and how these impact your advertising. This helps authors understand Amazon's algorithm to avoid wasting money on ads.
Once the foundation is set, Roberts methodically guides readers through the process of creating and managing an ad campaign—from setting up your ad account, choosing the ad form, over selecting the right keywords to budget management. Roberts also covers ad performance analysis, optimization strategies, and troubleshooting potential problems.
Clear and concise explanations Writing an entire book on a topic as specific as Amazon advertising is difficult, but Dale L. Roberts pulls it off with remarkable clarity and structure in Advertising for Books. He breaks down the jargon, demystifies complex terms, and provides clear instructions on how to run campaigns. This approach makes it accessible for authors who are new to advertising or those who may have tried and struggled with ads before.
As with his other books, reading Advertising for Books feels like having a casual yet informative conversation with Roberts himself. His approachable and friendly tone makes even the more technical aspects feel less intimidating. What makes the book especially engaging are the anecdotes and personal experiences Roberts weaves into the material. These real-life examples help clarify some of the drier content and add a layer of practicality.
Promoting and selling with Amazon The book brims with essential advice for running Amazon ad campaigns. However, there are two points to keep in mind:
First, implementing what you learned in this book does not guarantee you’ll make money. But your chances of success will certainly be higher if you follow Roberts’ advice and apply his strategies. His expertise will give you a leg up on the competition.
Second, you have to do the work—and likely more than once to see meaningful results. You’ll need to be hands-on, willing to refine your campaigns over time, and learn from both successes and failures. In other words, running successful Amazon Ads requires dedication, experimentation, and persistence.
Rating Regardless of your genre or level of experience, Advertising for Books is a must-have resource for any self-publisher. Whether you’re just starting out or a seasoned author looking to improve your marketing strategies, this book will deepen your understanding of Amazon Ads.
Overall, it’s a reader-friendly guide that turns a challenging subject into a manageable process. I plan to revisit it often as I manage my advertising campaigns, and I’m confident others will find it an invaluable reference as well.
