Tropes: enemies to lovers, forced proximity, second chances, found family
Feels: 3/5
Steam*: 2.5/5
Kinks: sex in risky places, piercings, no lube
Angst: medium/high
HEA: yes
Pairing: MM
Triggers/potential icks/content warnings/representation: drug use, minor characters who are addicts, child abuse, murder, violence, suicidal ideation by MMC, grief, minor character death by overdose
Cheating between MCs: No
Any cheating: Bex "cheated" on Trayton with Dax, breaking Trayton's heart at 16
Other person drama: No virgins. Daxton pined for Trayton when Tray was with Bex in the past. In the present, Dax doesn't get with anyone else during the book, but it's because Tray cock blocks him. It's strongly implied that Tray hooked up with a past hookup at 27% at least once when he was horny over Dax / feelings had started (likely more especially during a 1 month lull) but not with Dax yet. No others after they got together.
3.75 stars (I'm giving these stars for the intensity of emotion, but I don't really like Trayton)
This review contains spoilers. It's hard to comment on the arc of their relationship without talking about their shared history and spoilery stuff. So don't read if you don't want spoilers.
Trayton and Daxton are about 20 years old. They are in college. Trayton plays hockey and wants to get into the NHL. His dad has money, he's lived a relatively comfortable life. His mom abandoned the family when he was about 10 years old because she wanted to pursue love and his dad was too work obsessed to fulfill her. He met a boy when he was 11 who made him realize that he is gay, nothing ever happened between them, but he fell in love. The boy abandoned him without a word. Not long after, Trayton made friends with another boy Bex, and dated him in secret for years, Trayton thought at the time he was in love. Bex broke up with him and then kissed Daxton in front of him, with Dax looking at Trayton, which Tray interpreted as rubbing it in, triggering Tray to hate both Bex and Dax. Tray has reached the conclusion that everyone leaves and he'll never try love again. 4 years pass. Bex died last year of an overdose after years of addiction.
Dax is the nephew of Bex's drug dealer, and both Bex and Dax had to work for the dealer. Dac has been blamed a bit by some for being a bad influence, when he really wasn't. Dax has been physically, mentally and emotionally abused all his life by his family. He's thought about suicide multiple times from when he was 10 until present. Dax was the boy that Trayton fell in love with at 11 years old, and Dax fell in love too, and he didn't abandon him, he got hospitalized because of the abuse he was suffering and lost Trayton as a result and has hurt over him for years. Dax finally has an opportunity to get away from his family, he's gotten financial assistance to continue funding his college independently and he's been moved into a college dormitory away from the trailer he grew up in. His roommate ends up being a teammate of Trayton's, Cope, who is kind and becomes protective of Dax. And Dax has been assigned an art project that requires him to work with the hockey team closely. Trayton hates Dax and wants to make him miserable. He torments him, Dax pushes back. Tray is also attracted to him. And he finds himself cock blocking Dax over the months. It's hypocritical because at least at the beginning, Trayton is implied to be hooking up with others to slake his lust. As they spend more time together, Tray goes through a lot of feelings for Dax, hate, jealousy, possessiveness, coming to understand him, protectiveness of him.
This book was an intense read. There was a lot of intense feelings. The MMCs were both so broken and they were so preoccupied with the other person, they wanted each other so bad. It was quite a journey of tension between them progressing. Relatively slow burn though because they didn't hook up for almost half of the book.
There were some things that kept me from really really loving the book though:
- Giving Daxton the hockey art project was a stupid idea. The Dean/coach know his situation, know the tension between Dax and some of the players over Bex's death, yet they thought that it was a good idea to put him in a triggering and negative / unhealthy position with people that hate him. It's also going to drive Trayton to probably assault Daxton, and put Trayton's education and career with hockey at stake because he could get expelled and become someone no one would want to touch professionally. Why would they do that to one of their star players, it's counter to their interests.
- I found the tattoo drama unrealistic. Trayton came off immature in his excitement over this tattoo. And it didn't seem like a realistic tattoo experience. Dax had never tattooed a client before, and the first tattoo that he books is an arm sleeve with Trayton?! There was never reference to him paying for the tattoo, he kept running away after every tattoo appointment, and I'm like, pay your bill b****! And I feel like the design wasn't as meaningful as they played it off to be. I feel like this is a tattoo that he might regret. Tray seems clingy, he's clinging to Brayden and Kal so he's getting an arm sleeve that is about their friendship and relationship as teammates, an ode to the team that he is currently on, when he's going to move on at some point, even if they stay close. If my friend got a arm sleeve devoted to our friendship, I would be like, slow your roll!!!
- I didn't like Trayton. I know it's a dark romance and they're supposed to do bad s***, but this wasn't even about that. He was just unconsciously accidentally a bit of a selfish and narcissistic personality. A dick. Even in the little moments after he had given up on his resentments and was trying to be nice to Dax and be a good boyfriend, there was just this underlying toxicity to the things he did. He always made Dax be the one to make an effort and come to him. Like demanding that Dax drop his school work and spend time with him, do an interview with him. He punched Dax accidentally and didn't apologize over it. On page 288 Tray just walks away at an incredibly dumb time. At the end of the book, when Tray is making his big grand gesture to say I love you, he makes Dax come to him rather than Tray going to Dax. That moment just set me off, because it gives the same energy as a guy telling his girlfriend, "I want to tell you I love you, but come to my office break room and meet me there and I'll tell you there".
- It was also super hypocritical for Tray to be all possessive and cock blocking Dax while he was still hooking up with others himself during the first 30% of the book. There wasn't anything on page other than Tray having a public make out session with someone and another incident where he was demanding a f*** buddy show up at his place for a hookup, but it's assumed he went through with it and with that kind of personality and attitude over the next month where he wasn't really doing anything with Dax I'm sure he wasn't the type of guy to stay celibate. It's just not fair to do cock blocking but hook up with others yourself.
Kind of disappointed that the third book in this series is going to be MF with Kal having a second chance with the 30-year-old woman he hooked up with at 17, and apparently knocked up. I'm not a fan of MF and I'm not a fan of the secret baby trope.
Some notable moments:
"I eye up the trophies, wondering if there’s a name on them. Do I want the surprise, or do I need to prepare? There’s one person who I would rather shit in my own hand and clap than share a room with, and that’s Trayton King. As long as it’s not him, I can do this."
"“Tray.” I mewl as he grinds his hips, hitting that spot that drives me wild. He keeps doing it, and his hands slide down my legs, gripping my ass as he sits up. He pulls my hips up, slides out, and then eases back in, targeting that sweet spot. His eyes lock onto mine, holding me in place as he takes me completely. Each slow thrust steals my breath. He just stares, mouth slightly open, like he’s capturing everything about me. I hate it. “You hate me,” I grit out as he presses that spot. He pauses, frowning, then thrusts in harder. “Oh my god, yes.” I breathe, the sensation overwhelming me. I don’t even need to touch myself; the way he moves and looks at me is enough. “I don’t,” he argues, and I keep my eyes closed. I can’t face him when he says that; it’s just the moment talking."
*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.
**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.
