The Love Sucks Club
Tragedy and heartbreak drive Dana McComb to a Caribbean island where she sets about to becoming a hermit. Settling into numbness seems to be the only way to suppress the psychic visions that once showed her the death of her soul mate. A failed rebound relationship leaves her even more intent on losing herself in the loneliness of her isolated house on the hill. With her middle-aged, beef jerky obsessed Tom cat, Dana vows to live a life devoid of ups and downs. Making fun of her own state of mind, she and her best buddy start "The Love Sucks Club" which is really just a euphemism for sitting around bitching about their own bitterness about love. Trying to stay wrapped in her own misery starts to fail when Dana's pesky younger sister and a host of other island misfits insist on poking into her best laid plans for comfort. When a new woman shows up on island, bringing back Dana's visions, she is suddenly besieged by night terrors, vivid hallucinations, and panic attacks. Half-convinced she's going crazy, Dana tries to shut out her past with increasing difficulty. Aware that it may be the only way to put her dead lover to rest, Dana begins a journey that could either shatter her life or save it.

Guaranteed laughs!
It's a story with plenty of action and witty dialogues. Never a dull moment. I love Sam with her big mouth and she delivers laughs on nearly every page. The main characters have all neurotic traits . They are the most hilarious batch of Island inhabutants. I really laughed my ass off all the time. There are also serious elements in the story and that makes it so special. This book is a valuable addition to your collection.

Just as with the other books I’ve read by Beth Burnett, this one did not disappoint. I enjoyed her character development and witty dialogue in this book. Not really a typical lesbian romance, just a fun read. Highly recommend.

After a terrible tragedy and heartbreak, Dana McComb moves to a beautiful Caribbean island where she becomes a bit of a loner. Feeling nothing but numbness is the only way Dana can stop the visions she’s been having about the death of her soul mate, Fran.
Dana had a rebound relationship that failed dismally. So, she’s even more determined to hunker down in her isolated house on the top of a hill. Dana’s only companion is her middle aged, Maine Coon Tom cat, Frank. She’s determined to live a quiet and uneventful life.
Dana and her best friend Sam, start up The Love Sucks Club. A club which enables them and their friends to sit around moaning about their pitiful, almost non existent love lives.
Dana’s state of misery gradually begins to subside when her younger sister and a few of the islanders start interfering in her life and her plans for being a hermit are slowly ousted.
When a new woman arrives on the island, Dana’s visions return with a vengeance. Suddenly, hallucinations, nightmares and panic attacks are an everyday occurrence. Dana wonders if she is going insane.
Dana’s attempts at shutting out her past are failing. She has to do something and soon. She begins on a journey to put her dead lover to rest, knowing it could either be a life saver or a complete disaster, making matters worse.
A nicely written book full of humor and beautifully set on a Caribbean island. From the well defined descriptions, I totally lost myself in with the characters and lived the story with them and I was hooked in from the first page.
Dana and her best friend Sam play the biggest parts in this story. Both are well developed and multidimensional. They are backed up by a great cast of secondary characters all interacting well together. Characters I could easily identify with and think of as friends.
The story mainly follows Dana as she tries to get over the loss of her lover. Without adding any spoilers, all sorts of ups and downs and twists and turns occur throughout. Emotions boil over one minute, followed by gut aching laughter the next.
Life on the island is never dull and Dana’s futile attempts at being a hermit are thwarted at every turn. Until eventually, The Love Sucks Club goes from bitching about the lack of love it’s member are experiencing, to actually having the hope of love to come.
This is an extraordinary original story, one which will stay with me a long time. Totally different from Beth’s first two books. I would have liked to have seen a bit more of Dana’s life after the hurricane. But, maybe that’s for another book, hopefully.

A friend gave me this book and I had my doubts, but it was hardly the cliche I expected - it was an unexpected to me as it was to the subject of the book. I adored her! Yes, we understand by the end of the book that love as we've been conned into believing sucks, but real love and by extension life, does not. It was definitely a fun, rewarding book

The Love Sucks Club is an entertaining book, with well-developed characters. Dana must discover why psychic visions of her dead lover rise again when a mysterious new woman appears on the island. Unique setting, which makes the reader wonder if they couldn't chuck it all and head for a tropical island themselves.

This is the third Beth Burnett book I've read and is by far my favorite. The depth of the story and of the characters had me unable to put it down. Far from cliche, Burnett introduces the reader to true-to-life lesbian characters that will steal your heart. I highly recommend this book.
