Rapture of the Deep

Rate this book
In the middle of the night, the doorbell rings, and Jennifer Johnson is pulled from a deep sleep. Outside her front door stand two police officers, messengers bearing tragic news. Joe, Jen’s recently estranged husband, is missing, the victim of a scuba diving accident.

Joe “Puck” Johnson is a master carpenter. He is quiet, thoughtful, and passionately loves his deeply scarred wife. Their separation, unwanted, painful, and immersed in unfinished business, is now punctuated by this unfathomable loss.

Tom Hyden is a high profile banker. He has the perfect home, the perfect wife, the perfect child, the perfect everything; yet beneath the surface of his well manicured life Tom carries a dark and shameful secret.

Born and raised in the small Iowa town of Lake Pulaski, these two men cannot remember a time before their friendship. It is a bond most recently sealed by their mutual love of scuba diving. Beneath the waves diving provides a peaceful respite. However on the surface, their worlds are reeling and the peace they so desire is being torn asunder. Both men find their families disintegrating and their lives twisting apart, the result of events they cannot talk about, even with each other.

So Tom and Joe are lost, and they must now take a journey that for one will lead to tragedy and the other redemption…

Sometimes lost in today's literary canon is the ability to write conversationally, as if the words are being spoken to you by the narrator. You know how you can readily tell when someone is giving a speech that they have never read out loud before, so it just sounds sterile and insincere? So too with so many novels.

Grindberg's writing is obviously a product of his years of practiced oratory from the pulpit: lyrical, succinct, and full of colorful language that narrates a story that is neither condescending nor rigid. Characters are immediately relatable, believable, and captivating, and Grindberg uses these sketches as the framework for his narrative, weaving and connecting these people together into a gripping story.

Beautifully written novel containing insights to relationships and complex emotions. The title fits perfectly in many ways, as facts about diving are meaningfully woven into the tale, and especially as a metaphor for getting in too deep in life's temptations and social trappings. Characters are realistic, well-developed and likeable. Despite conflicts in the story, there is no true antagonist among the characters--just a portrait of how one can get into something too "deep." I agree with other reviews here that said it was hard to put down! Word is that Grindberg is working on another novel, which I am adding to my reading list.

Connecting with a reader isn’t always easy, especially for a first time author. Getting an audience as a first time author is even more difficult. So, when David requested someone review his book I decided to commit.
Before reading the book, I studied the title, “Rapture of the Deep”. My first inclination, this book is infused with religious rhetoric. Setting aside judgment, I began reading. Grindberg managed to hook me with the following lines.
“Conversation. It’s breezy, and it’s fun, and it fills the air with one small thing after the next. After all, the way to keep a perfect world perfect is to do just that; fill the air and keep those things small.”
As I contemplated the fact that the author, David Grindberg is a minister I referred back to the line, “Fire and life, ‘he thinks to himself’, nothing’s ever as quite the way it should be.” I concluded, “Rapture of the Deep” is a story of many men and women. It is a story of secrets, denial, loss, and conflict.
“Rapture of the Deep” by David Grindberg is good read.

OK, I'm the author. Of course I think it's wonderful.

Shameless promotion aside, I do hope you read it. Rapture of the Deep is about little things, ordinary things. It’s about ordinary people and what makes them tick. It’s about trials and heartaches and the way those unseen matters silently shape the lives in which they exist. It’s about how people look so in control, so together, but beneath that placid surface those same people are in complete free fall. Not only have I spent a lifetime getting to know these people, but I am one of them, and so are you.

The people in this book?

They are you,

they are me,

and we are lost,

all of us lost,

all of us seeking a way back home.

So…I’ve set this in a story (hopefully you find it to be a compelling story), introduced you to people you already know, and given you access to their lives, to who they really are, what they do, and why they do it. I can’t wait for it’s publication. Mostly though I can’t wait to hear from you and what you think. I hope Rapture of the Deep connects. I hope it touches you.

Compelling plot, believable characters, moral dilemmas, satisfactory ending. Punctuation errors were distracting, but the story kept me engrossed. I really liked this book! If the editing had been better, I would have given it 5 stars.
