As a lifelong Michigander, I had high hopes for this book. There are many references to places I’ve visited and Mackinac Island is an amazing place. The basic plot was fine. However, the writing is mediocre. The author could have done so much more with the plot. Additionally, there are many grammatical and spelling errors throughout the book. Clearly, the editors and proofreaders failed on that account. Disappointed.

Okay story line. I became very frustrated with the main character and some of his views on life. Also, the book version I read is in desperate need of a copy editor. As someone who works on the quality assurance side of the house the poor editing was a major distraction.

I appreciate that the author did his research on his subject matter but he didn’t have to include everything in the story. I felt that the story would have been half the size if he would have stuck with just the story.
Also I question whether he had been to Hawaii. I had lived there several years and I found several inaccuracies about Hawaii in the story. Such as the Pali Lookout, it would have been very hard to push someone off, you would have to pick them up. Plus he never mentioned the Kam Highway, if you land in Oahu then you take that road. One of the main characters is Hawaiian, how come she didn’t speak pidgin? He had the slang of the yoopers?
I just felt that between the extensive details and the inaccuracies of Hawaii I could have been done with the story in half the time.

By ‘finished’ I mean quit. I have only ever quit a book a handful of times, but this is so awful that I couldn’t read past page 67.

This was a mixed bag for me. It was great to read a story about my home state, and it was a fast paced book, but some of the terminology is VERY outdated and borderline racist, which killed a bit of my enthusiasm for the story.

Sorry, but the lack of editing on this book caused me to just give up on it. Life is too short and there are too many good books out there. This one had a multitude of misspellings and punctuation errors; I always notice errors because I'm an academic editor, but this was just a mess.

I bought this at the local flea and so glad I did. Excellent tie in to WWll and Mackinac.

A very light read & mildly entertaining. Best read with one eye closed on a hot, summer afternoon.
