Leon Degrelle

Degrelle was also active in the Belgian Catholic Party of which he splitoff in 1935 when he formed the Rex movement.
After Belgium was defeated by Germany, Degrelle joined the Wehrmacht. In 1943 he and all the other Wallonians were transferred to the Waffen SS. The Wallonian Waffen SS fought at the Eastern front.
After the war Degrelle fled to Spain and was the head publisher for the group "Círculo Español de Amigos de Europa". In the 1960s, Degrelle returned to public life as a neo-Nazi and gained great influence in far-right European circles. He published several books and papers glorifying Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime and publicly denying the Holocaust.
Degrelle died in 1994 in a Spanish hospital.

A short, easy read about some stuff I was not familiar. Leon Degrelle was an impressive man, and quite a good writer, due no doubt to his intensive churning out of propaganda during his rise through the political ranks in his 20's. The editor missed a few things. I noticed a few typos: the wrong word, or a missing word here and there, but it's not bad.
Degrelle's vision of what Europe could have been were Hitler to have won the war, though not particularly useful, reveals his passion and stirs me to do better in my own life. Also of note is that Degrelle speaks of things in this book that were later backed up by David Irving, such as Hitler's actual competence as a strategist, lending further credit to Degrelle's reputation as a genuine historian. This is the first thing I've read by Degrelle, but it won't be the last, and I'll likely return to some chapters.
I recommend it.

What an excellent read simply for the historical angle from which Degrelle is writing from. Imagine being the last remaining National Socialist that knew personally all of the Third Positionist Hall of Famers from the 20th century and surviving into the 60s and writing about what happened in WW2 from sed angle. This book is a must read for history buffs and devout National Socialists and Fascists alike. You won't be disappointed Degrelles writing style is always entertaining page turning!

Excellent book by highly decorated Waffen-SS General Leon Degrelle from 1969, looking back on the events preceding WW2 and then the war itself, along with his aerial escape to Spain and exile there, post-war. There is a pleasant mixture of his own experiences, including combat against the Soviets in the brutal cold, and the broader political/military history from that era. I really enjoyed reading this one after Hitler Democrat, another superb Degrelle book, a few years ago.

Nonostante il titolo il libro vuole porsi come autobiografia di Degrelle, fondatore del movimento Rexista (nazionalista cattolico) e collaborazionista belga che negli anni della Seconda Guerra Mondiale appoggiò l'Asse nella speranza di diventare un equivalente di Duce/Fuhrer per il Belgio, il libro si sofferma ampiamente su Hitler, figura per cui Degrelle nutre un'ammirazione quasi religiosa (come il titolo lascia intendere). Degrelle non ha goduto di buona reputazione nemmeno per buona parte dell'estrema destra/neonazisti in quanto ritenuto inaffidabile e ciarlatano anche dagli stessi (persino lo stesso Jean-Marie Le Pen, fondatore del Front National di simili vedute e amico personale di Degrelle, lo definì un pallonaro bugiardo patologico e autoproclamato guru di un culto che non c'era).
Il libro ponendosi come apologetico del nazismo, tenta direttamente di fare apologia anche degli stessi crimini di guerra di Degrelle e del suo ruolo nel corso della Guerra. Le posizioni negazioniste (perlomeno pubbliche) sull'Olocausto e il rappresentare Hitler ora come un virile donnaiolo, ora come un agnellino molto sensibile, sono parte di questa apologia, rendendo il libro solo limitatamente interessante. L'interesse si perde ulteriormente considerando molti avvenimenti dubbi e poco comprovabili già messi in dubbio non solo dagli storici ma anche da testimoni e collaboratori di Degrelle, come la celebre affermazione che Degrelle abbia "conosciuto Hitler meglio di chiunque altro" e che quest'ultimo lo abbia ritenuto "il figlio che non ho mai avuto", nonostante i due si siano incontrati in occasioni formali e complessivamente solo per pochi minuti. Non un caso che queste affermazioni siano emerse solo decenni dopo la morte di Hitler.
Alla fine della Guerra Degrelle riuscì a evitare ogni condanna trasferendosi in Spagna, dove all'epoca vi era ancora il regime franchista, protetto dai mandati internazionali di cattura dove continuò a pubblicare questo genere di libri negazionisti dell'Olocausto, apologetici del nazifascismo e nostalgici dei suoi crimini; lo stesso anno di Hitler per 1000 anni pubblicò Fronte dell'Est 1941-1945, breve resoconto sulle sue scorribande in Unione Sovietica anch'essa messa più volte in dubbio nella maggior parte delle affermazioni e analizzata magistralmente (insieme al pensiero generale di Degrelle) nel libro Il secco e l'umido: Una breve incursione in territorio fascista di Jonathan Litell

Interesting perspective from one of the leaders on the other side of WWII, who survived the war. Different insights than what you would get from mainstream history books
