Intrepid Japan proves that, even in the age of AI, travel guides remain indispensable.

I picked it up in a quirky lifestyle store in Singapore (Cat Socrates) on a whim—Goodreads had its publication date listed as April, and I figured it would make good reading for the flight. It turned out to be more than just in-flight entertainment. The book’s ratio of insight to page count is remarkably high, and the writing is so smart. As a first-time visitor to Japan, I found myself reconsidering my choices of what to do and see.

One experience in particular stands out. The book has a chapter called The Last Gaijin bookstore. Intrigued, we went there on a Friday night for a comedy show, where we saw Yoshi, a Japanese comedian who performs in English. That alone would have been a memorable evening, but the real surprise came afterward. I met the store’s owner, Nick, and his soon-to-be wife. Our conversation stretched late into the night—so late that we missed the last train. They also shared everything they knew about the book’s author, David, which made for an oddly meta experience.

That night set a pattern. I reached out to two more people mentioned in the book, and both responded, welcoming me into their world. Travel books rarely do that. They give directions, history, and recommendations, but they do not usually open doors. This one did.

By the time I found myself at a Kabuki show in tourist-heavy Ginza, I no longer felt like just another visitor. Something had shifted. I had learned to bow, to use the set phrases that hold Japan’s social fabric together. I sensed that the people around me saw it, too. Small things, but they matter.

And if there is one lesson from this book, it is this: do not go with the flow. Ask for the thing you want. You might just get it.

I don't know if the book will have a great impact on the way I travel, but I did enjoy it. I bought it in preparation for an upcoming trip to Japan, and it did impact some of my choices. I will say that the book helped me get into a mindset that should be helpful in my travels. It was nice to read a "not typical" travel book!
