After a meet-cute that’s way too cute, Kahlea and Sherrod can’t stay away from each other. The only problem is neither wants anything serious right now. Oh, also, he comes from a huge family, and she doesn’t do family. Will their casual relationship stay casual or turn into something neither of them could have imagined…Love
I'm just a girl in love with literature. My love affair with romance novels started with I was 13 and has flourished into an obsession. I've always been a writer. Even when I was a little girl, I always had a pen and a notebook poised to let something out. You Make Me Better is my first project that will be published and I am STOKED. My goal is to write stories surrounding positive black love, with a little humor tossed in.
I’ve never seen two people try so hard to convince themselves they weren’t looking for anything serious romantically. Khalea and Sherrod were very anti-relationship and anti-love. Between his rolling stone daddy and her abusive mama, neither one of them wanted any parts of a commitment. But, you know what they say. If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans. Khalea is back home after working two months abroad in Paris. She just wants to decompress and love on her 10-month-old Pitbull. Imagine her surprise when she opens her patio door to find a very pregnant Jenny trotting in her direction. ‘This heffa was spending her spring face down, azz up while I was slaving in Paris so she could have somewhere to live.’ LOL!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Jenny was definitely livin’ her best hot girl summer while mama was away.
Out of all the Masons, Sherrod is the most laidback. If he’s not customizing a pair of sneakers for his exclusive clientele, he’s hangin’ out with his cousins. That’s the crux of his life. Oh, and then there’s Lamont Tyrone Mason. His very independent latchkey Pitbull who comes and goes as he pleases. Now, imagine Sherrod’s surprise when his neighbor (whom he’s never met) knocks on his door and informs him that Lamont knocked up her dog and they need to co-grandparent these puppies. 🐶🐶🐶🐶
The tug of war between these two was utterly frustrating. More so on Sherrod’s part. When Khalea realized she was fallin’ fast and wanted more, she was ready to commit 100% but, Sherrod was adamant about keepin’ their situation FWB only. My guy was fighting the inevitable to the bitter end until the uncles had to sit him down for a grown man to man talk. Grow and Tell is another banger for the Mason Family series. This couple gave me all the feels. 🥰🥰🥰🥰 The way Khalea and Sherrod met was just too damn cute. Their chemistry felt so real, which made watching them fall into something more so enjoyable. Jenny and Lamont were the best accidental matchmakers ever. Those adorable fur babies absolutely stole the book. As always, AshleyNicole’s signature humor was present and accounted for. I cackled from start to finish. I can’t wait to see which Mason is up next.
Listen I love the Mason's with their fine azzes and this book reminded me of that affliction.
You know an author has done their big one when you can picture the characters. These taller than normal, brown skinned, beautiful eyed men have been finding love one by one. This was Sherrod's story, one of the sons of John Mason who was one of the known heauxish uncles of the family.
Unfortunately John's heauxish ways had negatively impacted the way Sherrod felt about love and he thought he was content just loving his large family with no attachments. That is until his sweet pitbull Lamont makes a love connection with Jenny, his boo down the street, and he is forced to meet Jenny's momma Kahlea.
Kahlea and Sherrod fell into a situationship. Both thought they didn't want more until one did....and their relationship shifts. Kahlea tried to stand on business but folds like the folding chair at the riverboat brawl🤭. I liked them together, but this was such a quiet love. I was almost concerned because it felt like Kahlea was walking on eggshells in order to keep the peace, despite how she felt and in real life that never works.
For those of us that love BIG love stories, this may not be the story for you. However, I cackled a lot and I appreciated the quiet yet fun vibe they shared. The ending did feel a little rushed where it was like well bam let's embrace this situation and I would have loved to experience more of them in love.
I loved everything about it. I love the Masons real bad so I went into this expecting to fall in love with another cousin and I did. Sherrod and Khalea gave me all the feels, like all of them. Their chemistry felt so real, which made watching them slip into something real so enjoyable. AshleyNicole did a great job of establishing the fact that these were two people who weren’t looking for anything serious and that plus their chemistry had me locked in. The laughs were absolutely present, the ****fishing conversation with Celia, who I loved, had me in tears. I loved that we got to catch up with old friends too……he need to stay off my girl though. Another banger from one of my favorite pens. I can’t wait for the next one!!!!
I enjoyed this read, though the chemistry between Kahlea and Sherrod felt forced IMO. Both were so opposed to a relationship that when they finally got together, it was a bit underwhelming. The ending was underdeveloped and rushed. But it's AshleyNicole, so she'll always get an immediate read from me. I love the Masons—it's always a treat and a good time with them. Still waiting on Taylor's story.
While I love getting another Mason sibling story and any insight we get to see about previous couples, I didn’t love this one as much as I anticipated. I felt like Sharrod’s refusal to see the situation with Kahlea as more than what it was went on too long. In fact I feel like the only reason they got together was because Kahlea made her announcement. We never saw Sharrod have that epiphany moment when he realized that he loved and wanted her and this makes the love story a little less believable.
Sherrod and Kahlea were tap dancing on my nerves! Lol let me be clear this was a sweet romance but the trope was “together but no title”. I loved how these two met and what was their reason for being around each other while their feelings for each other blossomed. I feel like the family dynamic was an interesting area to explore given that Kahlea had a very different experience from Sherrod. Also seeing Sherrod work through his misconceptions about love, marriage, and even kids was very beautiful to see. I’m so glad he came around and didn’t follow his daddy's lead! For reference, Sherrod’s daddy is one of the Mason men who isn’t married. I loved the updates on the family and honestly, I’m looking forward to more Mason’s books soon! I feel like we have a ways to go before we get to Taylor’s book but honestly, I’m here for it! These books are light, fun, and romance-heavy. What more could you ask for? I definitely recommend this book and am looking to what is next from AshleyNicole!
This book had me cracking the fuck up! I love this Mason Family series and dropped everything I was currently read to get into it and enjoyed every fucking moment.
Grow and Tell (Mason Family #9) by AshleyNicole is about custom shoe designer Sherrod Mason and fashion executive Kahlea Martin. When I saw that there was a new Mason story, I ran straight to Amazon!! The way Kahlea and Sherrod meet is just too cute! 🥰 Lamont and Jennifer are the best accidental matchmakers. Although Sherrod comes from a big family he isn’t looking to settle down and have one of his own. Kahlea is estranged from her family and isn’t looking to settle down either but life has its own plans. Sherrod Sherrod Sherrod, that’s a man right there! I can see how Kahlea gets caught up. I mean the way they naturally fall into a routine, it’s giving a relationship without labels. I’m not usually a fan of she falls first but in this case I enjoyed the angst. These two stressed me out, in between being in each other’s beds they were in their heads. Both characters have some growing to do (pun intended) 😭. I enjoy the friendship between Kahlea and Celia. Celia comes with the jokes but also lovingly keeps it real. I really appreciate the conversations about love the Mason men had, especially the older ones. My only wish is that I had more time with Sherrod and Kahlea! I really wanted that scene when the light bulb went on, like when, where and how did we come to that realization especially after all the humming and hawing. I loved the epilogue, a sweet way to end the story. I can’t wait to see which Mason finds love next! (Whispers I hope it’s Tee) 👀
Yet another amazing Mason family story. I love me some of the Mason family and anytime that truck drops off a story, I’m downloading it immediately. With that being said, let’s get into this review.
Sherrod and Kahlea were both on some no love or relationships but their dogs said we got something for you. This meet cute was so funny. They became grandparents to their dogs’ puppies and fell into a co-parenting relationship that quickly became a friends with benefits situation. Kahlea realized she fell first and wanted more but it took Sherrod a little more time to admit that he wanted it all with her.
I loved seeing their chemistry and relationship develop and the way they so easily fell into this co-parenting relationship with their dogs and their puppies was done so effortlessly. It’s always a fun time when the Masons get together, but I wish I could have seen Kahlea interact with them more and see what a healthy and loving family looked like since she didn’t have a good home life growing up. I also had plenty laughs especially with them and the love connection with Jenny and Lamont.
Now I can’t wait for the next Mason story gets released.
Sherrod was weird, there is no way around it. His attachment to his family was overboard, even for a family as close as the Mason’s. Jumping up as soon as they call, sitting up in a hospital overnight waiting on your cousins babies to be born is insane especially when the cousin has siblings and parents. It was like he had no life outside of them. All the other cousins lived these family but gahlee they had some boundary, sherrod walking around talking about “I’m not sharing my family” weird.
Even the way he was so defensive with kahlea, he kept asking about her family and after all the bad things he was like you still don’t check on them, like huh? And then acted like he didn’t know why she felt judged. Also acting like he didn’t understand her nervousness around telling him about the pregnancy, like he his words and actions didn’t give any indication he would be happy about a baby. Even his reasoning for not wanting a relationship was childish. He was just overall ridiculous and I could have done without him honestly.
This is one of my favorite authors and this was a good story but it missed the mark a bit. There were 15 chapters and an epilogue and only 4 of the 15 were from Sherrod's point of view. This was a Mason book.but we barely got the Mason perspective. Why didn't we see him struggling and working through his feelings. We should've seen more scenes with the cousins and their opinions. What was the time frame from when we spoke to his uncles and she found out the news? In between then we should've seen how he came to realize his true feelings. Along with that, the game night should've happened before she found out the news instead of when they finally got together. To be honest they never had a heart-to-heart about their disconnect on family. He should've talked to her about why she was so quiet when she met his family and how he was the cause of that. They never truly hashed it out.
This really hit the spot and came at a time I needed some light heartedness fun. Their introduction was probably the best I’ve ever read. The Mason fam always leaves me warm and fuzzy.
I have been waiting SO patiently for Sherrod's story and AshleyNicole did NOT disappoint! Whew chile that BDE was SKRONG!!! Not strong but SKRONG! Seriously though, the author went a different route with the portrayal of this cousin and I wasn't mad at it. While he was very family-oriented, he didn't feel the need to discuss them every other sentence like the others have done in their stories, and that was a welcomed relief. We already know the family's history. No need to repeat it for 50-11th time. Also, Sherrod has six brothers and three of them had cameos, but that was it. I liked this angle because the attention was on HIM and not the family the majority of the book.
I even liked Kahlea. Yeah, she caught feelings after a while, but she didn't sit around crying with fat tears pouring down her face the entire book. Was she constantly in her head about every damn thing? Of course, who wouldn't be, but she dealt with it without all of the dramatics. She also wasn't a runner when problems arose.
I loved that the author didn't change Kahlea's thought process when it came to her reservations about Sherrod's dedication to his family. Many people struggle with this, but it was good to see that she didn't try to sweep it under the carpet for the sake of being with Sherrod. I'm sure her feelings about it will change over time, but at the moment, it's her truth. It also doesn't hurt that her man is understanding and isn't pressing the issue.
The dogs were so stinking CUTE, but Lamont Tyrone took me OUT! 🤣🤣🤣 You know he's a Mason, creating 10 damn puppies!
I'm so glad the babies were born. All boys!!! Not surprising in the least but I was hoping there would be one girl, maybe two in the bunch.
I LOVED the moment when the uncles were together playing poker. Uncle Charlie was in there getting Uncle John TOGETHER! It was facts, but Ms. Josephine needed to get some of that smoke too! She needs to be studied IDC IDC!!! Mama, you kept going back. Nah scratch that! You never left!
I'm not a fan of Aunt Susie (she cry too much for me and too damn nosey), but I'm glad she took the high road and sat in the waiting room when Nali delivered. Her cheap ass Mama is a TRIP!
Anyway. In a perfect world, there would be a prequel series of the second generation Masons and the women who would eventually become their wives or significant others. They are an interesting bunch, ESPECIALLY Uncles John, Charlie, and Richie. I didn't miss that line about being left heartbroken that Uncle Charlie said. There's a woman out there that he let get away.
If I could give this book 10 stars I would.

First things first. Is Kahlea pronounced kuh-lee-uh or kay-lee? I was bouncing back and forth between both pronunciations.
Anyway, I enjoyed this book (which duh. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book by AshleyNicole that I didn’t enjoy). I do have a few complaints about the leads, but I still liked the book.
I’ve read most of the books in the Mason Family Saga and I have to say, Sherrod is my least favorite Mason😬 I admired that he placed boundaries with Kahlea and stuck with them; however, his stubbornness got on my nerves. I didn’t like that Sherrod eventually acknowledged that he may actually be feeling Kahlea a lot more than he thought but didn’t tell her until the end when she revealed her feelings…AGAIN.
And girl Kahlea got on my nerves when she kept giving into Sherrod. The first time Kahlea folded, I was like “damn girl stand up! Stand on business for a while.” By the time chapter 12 rolled around, I was like “damn girl can you at least kneel?” Lol. Like I get it. You vibe with him and you like him but girl the man said he didn’t want more with not just you. He didn’t want more with anybody. I wished Kahlea would’ve actually gotten to know other guys. I didn’t like that she essentially waited for Sherrod.
But their bullshit aside, I liked Sherrod and Kahlea together. And I liked Lamont and Jenny. The way Kahlea and Celia talked about Jenny had me cracking up.
What also had me cracking up was the lead up to Sherrod and Kahlea having sex for the first time 😂 Girl when Kahlea said she didn’t feel anything when she had her hands in Sherrod’s pants, I just knew she was lying. He’s a Mason. There’s no way he wasn’t packing. I didn’t think the title of the book would also pertain to the Sherrod’s peen 😂
It was also nice getting updates on the Masons from the other books and Malakai. I still get confused about which Masons are siblings so I appreciated the part where Sherrod explained everyone’s relationship to Kahlea. I need that in every book lol.
Well it looks like the second gen Masons have swiftly launched the third gen and babies are being born every where! Love, then marriage and then babies in a baby carriage.
Sherrod is indifferent to marriage and babies and even relationships for that matter. His father is one of the heaux - I mean single first gen Masons who is now 60 and unattached. It’s rubbed off on his son unfortunately, even though Sherrod has seen amazing examples of loving marriages through his uncles. He thinks he doesn’t have space and time for his job, his projects, his family and his dog Lamont to then add on a relationship, let alone a wife and kids. Well that’s what he gets for thinking. Kahlea is an independent and successful single woman who is enjoying her career. She has a contentious non relationship with her family and so she doesn’t have anyone but her best friend and her dog Jenny. She doesn’t really want a relationship and is cool with a friends with benefits situation. Until she is not. Two dog lovers who turn into lovers who have hang ups and mindsets that get in the way of becoming more. This was an awesome story to add to the ever growing Masons Series. It was great to catch up on the Masons who were or had gotten married, who was pregnant, and who had babies already. I was also loving the conversation with the dad and uncles at the poker game as well as what happened in the nail shop later - there’s definitely something going on there! I laughed a lot and I appreciated how mature Sherrod was when it came to his feelings, addressing hers, and his honesty. It was refreshing and at times it may not have been what she wanted to hear. I appreciated that she didn’t go into a complete emotional spiral and handled everything in a mature manner for the most part.
I love the Mason family but this was a miss for me. Sherrod and Kahlea both got on my damn nerves. Kahlea kept trying to convince herself & us that she didn't want a relationship with Sherrod at the same time actively pursuing a relationship with him & getting her feelings hurt when he wasn't on the same page.
Sherrod kept telling us & his entire family that he didn't want to get married & have kids without providing any reasons as to why except 🤷🏾♂️. At the time, his family kept pressuring him to settle down & that rubbed me the wrong way on a personal level but this is a romance so sir get to committing.
Suddenly after discussing with/being bullied by his uncles & dad, he decides that he does indeed want a relationship with Kahlea &, boy isn't that convenient because she's pregnant. My brothers and sisters in Christ, use contraception.
Now all of a sudden, Sherrod is standing 10 toes deep in commitment & I just don't buy it. This book either needed to be longer or needed major character adjustments for this story to work for me.

I was too hype when I saw another Mason dropped, and like all the others Sherrie did not disappoint. My only thought was I wanted a bit more from his perspective I don’t think I got enough of him but I loved it all the same. As per usual the characters were funny and hella relatable. I loved their dynamic with each other but they frustrated me how they stayed in their heads about everything lol I love getting updates on all the previous cousins and cannot wait to see who’s up next. I just knew Kaylee was gonna get on the card table at some point and they would run a Boston on em lol I was smiling the whole book and of course didn’t want it to end. The Masons are one of my favorite family series because they are just super fun to read. As stated above I cannot wait for the next one.
I didn’t even know that AshleyNicole had another Mason Family book in the works. As soon as I saw it posted on social media, I had to read it. I love this family so much. It’s so cute watching them all find love and becoming parents. Sherrod and Kahlea kept trying to fight the inevitable. Especially Sherrod. I wanted to whoop him. I’m so glad his family helped him to see the light. Their doggy coparenting to lovers courtship was so much fun. AshleyNicole had no business making me laugh so hard at this man’s “shortcomings”. There were so many funny moments to enjoy. There was enough angst to keep it interesting. Of course, it got spicy, too. I thoroughly enjoyed this family reunion with my favorite cousins.
Who would have thought that two dogs, Lamont and Jenny, falling in love and having puppies would lead to their owners Sherrod and Kahlea hooking up, eventually falling in love, and having a baby on the way?! They both agreed to no strings attached $ex and Sherrod fought his feelings and commitment to anyone after his dad, Mr. John, and a couple of his uncles kept implying that it was better to have variety rather than settling down however Sherrod fell in love. It was so funny when Kahlea THOUGHT that Sherrod has a little shrimp but found out that he was a BIG grower and not a shower! I also like the fact that Sherrod’s parents, Mr. John and Ms. Josephine, seem as though they’re low key dating now. I can’t wait to see who’s matched up next possibly with Kahlea’s friend Celia.

Sherrod Mason was one of the ones who didn't want love, marriage and kids, but who knew when his dog started going missing for 8 hours a day he'd meet the woman who changed that. Lamont and Jenny having puppies together created this forced proximity situation that was a FORCE! Kahleah, like Sherrod wasn't looking for anything serious, but mind you, he is a Mason and they can't be resisted. This was probably the funniest Mason book so far. The way this family multiplies, they're going to need to start adding on to Grandma's house again. I love this family. Oh, but Kahleah's mom is garbage and I'm glad we only heard about her and didn't have to see her on page.
Love the Mason family. Another great story. Two people, Kahlea Martin and Sherrod Mason, brought together by their fur babies, Lamont and Jenny. Those fur babies were hilarious and the cutest with their human like mannerisms and actions.
Both seriously thought they could have a non-committal sexual relationship without catching feelings. Wrong, because they did. One of them readily confessed to those feelings, knowing the consequences. The other one, it took a while for their feelings to hit, and then admit to them.
This was a slow burn love story that included laughter, family, romance, and eventually love. I loved catching up withbthe other family members as well.
Man. I love the details Ashley nicole gives us in these books to make these folks so real. From the daily going ons of the dogs, to how-to play 500. I just loved everything about this book. We got to see the unmarried side of the masons. I love that both characters weren't looking for anything but both fell hard. So many women unfortunately don't have the best relationships with their mothers and that makes me even more happy Kahlea is going to be a Mason, to get the family love she never had.Sherrod is one my fave masons for sure and I love all the babies coming on the scene. Tee is definitelyup soon. Wonder if Celia will get a Mason. So many questions! Once again- bravo!!
Of all the Mason Family books, this one frustrated me most. I get that Sherrod saw too much of what not to do from his dad, but IN MY OPINION, he did exactly what he said he didn't want every single time when it came to Kahlea, effectively leading her deeper down the habit hole to then act like he was surprised when she revealed her feelings. And Kahlea, while her internal dialog had me literally laughing out loud all through this book, her actions had me feeling second hand embarrassment for her because that man told her what it was and what it wasn't and still she got butt hurt multiple times while still showing up to his house over and over. This pairing felt kinda forced to me and even the epilouge didn't make change my view of them. Nothing at all like the other cousin's stories which made me feel less invested, unfortunately. I still love this authors work and she wrote a good storyline, but this one wasn't a favorite of mine.
Sherrod and Khalea were the cutest. I love how their dogs creeping brought them something that neither was ready to accept. The whole d***fishing debacle was HILARIOUS. I haven’t laughed out loud like that reading something in a while. While it started out the way it usually does with situationships, it morphed into something deeper with time. Kahlea just reached the point of no return first. I wasn’t ready for their story to end either, but I’m sure we’ll see them in the next Mason’s installment. I’m happy to hear Simeon and Choyce are still going strong too. They’ve been my favorite for a while.
What made this a really good book, was their relationships with their pets, how they came to meet, the jokes and them building a relationship. Also his relationship with his family, the bonding, and how it was affecting their relationship considering she really didn’t have a relationship with her family, all of that made this a great story for me.
I could have passed on all the sexual comments from them talking about his penis, which is where the title comes from and all other sexual comments. I don’t know how to explain it, but it didn’t draw me to this couple more. Some parts just seem over drawn out
This was my least favorite of the series. I felt like Sherrod’s refusal to see the situation with Kahlea as more than what it was dragged out. I hated that she immediately caved in her boundaries because it allowed him to keep playing in her face. Letting her around the family but continuing to say they are nothing is crazy. It felt like the only reason they got together was because Kahlea made her announcement. We never saw Sherrod have that epiphany moment when he realized that he loved and wanted her. He went from being unsure that he wanted her to telling her “I love you.” It made the love story a little less believable
This was such a cute short read! I really enjoyed it. The story was light, sweet, and had plenty of heart — but what really made me smile was how they co-parented as dog grandparents. That part was just too cute! It gave the whole story an extra layer of charm and humor.
It’s one of those books that makes you feel warm inside, even without being overly dramatic. The chemistry was nice, the pacing was quick, and that dog co-parenting storyline? Chef’s kiss.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ (For the sweetness, the laughs, and the cutest dog grand-parenting energy even) “They may not have kids, but they nailed dog grand-parenting!” 🐶💞
I love the entire Mason family and I want to be one lol. This story between Kahlea and Sherrod was so good. Their meet cute was just that. I enjoyed the banter between these two. There were moments where I was smiling or laughing out loud. These two struggled with wanting more from their situationship but eventually figured it out. I loved that Sherrod went to the uncles about his feelings and the advice they gave him. This book did not disappoint and I am not so patiently waiting on the next Mason story.
