Wilderstein is one of the surviving millionaire's mansions on the Hudson, and has been opened (sort of) to the public. This fascinating book is based on family journals and letters (they rarely threw anything away) and includes a large amount of family pictures. The house was built and owned for more than a hundred years by the Suckley family - by any evaluation, a severely peculiar bunch. It's a story of wealth and privilege mixed with self-sacrifice and death.

An interesting family history but a little too detailed for my tastes. It could have been half as long by not specifying every little note that may have been written down by the family and still have been as interesting.
