Miloš Crnjanski (in Serbian Cyrillic: Милош Црњански, pronounced [mîlɔʃ t͡srɲǎnskiː]) was a poet of the expressionist wing of Serbian modernism, author, and a diplomat. He initially wrote poetry but later turned to prose fiction and drama, as well. He wrote about his disillusionment, the futility of war and the destruction of his country.

Crnjanski was born in Csongrád, present day Hungary in 1893. His father was a municipal notary. The family moved to Temesvár (now Timisoara in Romania), where he grew up in a Serbian environment, favouring Serbian nationalism. After high school, he studied in Rijeka and then Vienna. After the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, he was persecuted like other Serbs and then drafted into the army to fight the Russians. He was wounded in 1915, spending time in a hospital in Vienna. He was later sent back to the Italian front. He then studied art history and philosophy in Vienna and graduated from the University of Belgrade, where he had edited the student newspaper. He later worked as a teacher, a newspaper editor and an embassy press attaché in Berlin and then in the Yugoslav Embassy in Rome. He also worked as reporter in Spain during the Spanish Civil War. In World War II, he escaped to London, where he remained after the war, becoming a British citizen. He worked in Hatchards, the bookshop, while his wife sewed dolls dresses for Harrods. He returned to Belgrade, Serbia in 1965, where he died in 1977.

Жанровски тешко одредиво дело.

Комбинација путописа, личног дневника, есеја о различитим темама, а напослетку се све ово може читати и као роман о животу једног дипломате у Риму у освит Другог светског рата.

Живот у Риму у аристократским круговима могао би се чинити лагодан и безбрижан – седељке, вечере по скупим ресторанима, шетње по Риму и околини, али времена су смутна и над целим друштвом надвија се сенка фашизма и наступајућег рата, тако да Црњански од свег тог хаоса налази своје уточиште, своју Хипербореју у маштањима о путовањима по скандинавским пределима које је посетио неколико година раније.

Иако су главна "дешавања" тек одјек у позадини, Црњански је дао одличну слику италијанског предратног друштва и политичких превирања.

Crnjanski leči dušu.

Pošto ne mogu da nađem reči koje bi opisale ovo savršenstvo od romana-eseja-putopisa, samo ću prekucati dve slike koje su na mene ostavile najveći utisak.


"Primetio sam na pesku jedno, skrhano, krilo galeba, sa tragom krvi, i rešio sam se, da ga snimim. U žurbi, da me ne stignu talasi, slučajno sam snimio, sa tim krilom, i svoju senku, koja je na njega bila pala. Ne mogu to da zaboravim. Ta uspomena me je dopratila do Rima."

"Taj Triton, ovde, u Rimu, setio me vodoskoka, koji sam gledao u jednom kraljevskom dvorcu, na Severu. Prvo je bio mali, kao neki izvor za decu, zatim je, iznenada, šiknuo, visoko. Pored njega šiknuše i drugi. A pošto je mehanizam bio komplikovan, u fontani, mlaz vodoskoka se vrteo, penio, prskao, uzimao oblik cveta, plamena, a posle je opet klonuo. Pretvarao se u vodenu krunu, stišao tako, da je prskao samo nisko, tiho, jedva vidno, kao da je biser, ili ljudske suze rasipao. Potpuno je za trenut ućutao. Onda je opet šiknuo visoko. Skočio, kao što belci uvis skaču. Šiktao, kao što plamen šikne, kad zapali kuću. Vrteo je vodu kao oluju. Imao je, kao sneg, belu penu. Dobio je veliku snagu. U vrtlogu se pretvarao u ljiljan, u ružu, u lalu, ali se zatim opet smirio, pa je ličio na one sitne fontane, koje sam video u Alhambri, a koje cveće zalivaju i uspavljuju.
Sve je to bila slika našeg života, mladosti, smrti, sve je to bio simbol, i pobuna, padova, klonuća, jauka, pesme, plača, u svetu. Ta fontana sa tim skokovima i padovima vode, u mom sećanju ostala je, za mene, najdublji smisao svega, što je bilo, i što će biti u svetu i u mom životu. Triton me je u Rimu na tu fontanu podsetio.
Dao nam je znak. Otići ćemo. "

As I wrote in the review of the first part, a very strange book. It would be interesting to make an index of all the historical figures mentioned – from Homer to Hitler.
