Lisa Cassidy is an Australian epic fantasy author writing character-driven stories filled with political intrigue, found family, loyalty, and magic. Her books span both adult and young adult fantasy, with romance woven in as a slow-burn subplot rather than the central focus.
She is the author of the young adult fantasy series The Mage Chronicles and Heir to the Darkmage, and adult epic fantasy series A Tale of Stars and Shadow and The Inkweaver Archive. She is currently working on a sequel to A Tale of Stars and Shadow.
Lisa is an author by day and book nerd in every other spare moment she has. She’s a self-confessed coffee snob (don’t try coming near her with any of that instant coffee rubbish) but is willing to accept all other hot drink aficionados, even tea drinkers.
She lives in Australia’s capital city, Canberra, and like all Australians, is pretty much in constant danger from highly poisonous spiders, crocodiles, sharks, and drop bears, to name a few. As you can see, she is also pro-Oxford comma.
A 2019 SPFBO finalist and a finalist for the 2020 ACT Writers Fiction Award, Lisa also partners with One Girl, an Australian charity working to ensure girls everywhere have access to quality education. A percentage of her royalties support this work.

One of my most anticipated reads of the year delivered. There's something very familiar and warm about Lisa Cassidy's novels. They are nothing literary or experimental - they are Sanderson-style, plot-driven action fantasy - but with a slightly different take from the norm. Perhaps, reductively, the fresh appeal of Cassidy is reading this very traditionally male style of fantasy written by a woman and with a single-POV female voice, with great male and female characters both. But it's probably just that Cassidy can write a world and central group of friends that makes you never want to leave, and yet create stakes and anxiety on a scale that's not matched by many authors out there.
The Inkweaver Archive doesn't benefit from the more privileged upbringing of Cassidy's first two series. Those introduced a likable (ATOSAS) or easy-to-relate-to (Mage Chronicles) protagonist, and then thrust them into a story that featured instant stakes and consequences for the characters. The first two books of this series took time to develop, featured rougher, less archetypal characters and a much darker world, and had much less of a plot framework to drive them along.
Many fantasy authors struggle with when to employ timeskips because they find themselves afraid to leave out information. When Lisa Cassidy writes a timeskip, as she does at the beginning of this book, it's almost as if we get more information than if she didn't, because she's so good at showing the character development on each side. Much like the timeskip in the Mage Chronicles, which I loved, the timeskip in this one somehow makes the slow pace of the first two books make sense and consolidates a lot of the character work.
Despite my complaining about the premise of the series, the execution is among the best in the business. In The Wyvern's Cry, Lisa Cassidy has written a perfect dragon rider novel; written one of the best-executed time skips of all time; and slowly developed one of the best cadres (caidre? We'll see) of friends on the market. Where did all of this come from? This is a genuinely excellent series at this point, and even more impressive if you consider that it started with very little to offer.
There will one more book in this series, and I'm very excited to see what happens - and possibly even more to see what Cassidy can do in this form with a new idea. What will she write next?
If you’ve followed me for a while, you know my deep love for Lisa Cassidy’s books. She continues to amaze me when I can still give each book in an entire series 5 stars. I always assume there’s no way this next book will be 5 stars again but nope, she surprises me each time.
Being book 3, I will only give a general opinion without giving the main plot away. But let me say, you’re in for a ride with this one! Arya continues to evade the Nightstalker and his men. However, this time, a secret threatens to upend everything. Arya is bold, determined, brave, stupid and most of all, real. I love this about her. I love that this character is making mistakes, sometimes guessing her way through problems but is always 100% devoted to the people and her friends. This one ends exactly how I worried it would and I almost threw the book, even though I knew why it happened. It’s a really good thing Cassidy can get these books out quickly cause I’m going to need the next one quickly!
Props again to Lisa Cassidy for bringing back my love of reading and reminding me why I do this!
Thank you to Lisa Cassidy for always trusting me with her books!
There was one line in the beginning of this book that shocked me but really did set the scene and make me sit up going “hold up, what?” but I think it worked well and makes sense with how the second book ended. We saw the consequences of that ending throughout the whole book, as well, not just through other characters but the changes in Arya - wonderful. It’s such a bugbear of mine when there aren’t consequences felt politically and emotionally!
It was also great to see more of the caidre with more page time and feeling more confident (Chairn is my favourite!). The wyverns with their own personalities has them as characters in their own right which I always love!
Loved loved loved that we got some more world-building and saw different places! I would have loved to have a scene with the Ice Queen at some point because I can only imagine what that city is like but maybe in book 4? 😇
I think this may be the one I like most in the series so far. The maturity of the characters has developed a lot and I think that’s what has made the difference. Nothing like a bit of physical and emotional trauma to bring new understanding 😅
Arya's life changed the day Thiara Ravenstrike was murdered. With even more to lose than before, Arya finds herself plagued by guilt & fear. The Nightstalker needs to be defeated, but Arya can't even survive a Nazgul attack. How can she possibly keep not only herself safe, but also her allies, friends, and family?
This book moved on from focusing on Arya's younger years, growing up with her closest friends & family. Now, the story focuses more on a grown up Arya, trying to survive & defeat her greatest enemy. I like how Arya keeps growing & maturing throughout the series. Even with her newfound maturity, Arya is still impetuous. I guess it's too much a part of her nature, and keeps sneaking out. At least it's always well intended, even if it often leads to dire consequences.
When her decisions unintentionally reveals her deepest secret to the Nightstalker, putting her friends and family in immediate risk, Arya finally takes the fight to the Nightstalker. But her enemy is far older and way more experienced. Fighting her new fears and trauma, Arya needs to find the strength to stop hiding and to finally stand up against the Nightstalker.
Three years have passed since Arya Ravenstrike escaped the Nightstalker’s nazal after he murdered the people she loved and respected. Nearly killed her. She’s spent that time attempting to learn her magic and living in the shadows.
She can’t run forever. Forced back to Dunidaen by the Nightstalker threat of invasions, she struggles to see a clear path forward.
To save the lives of everyone she loves, can Arya assume the mantle of Stormrider heir and learn to be a Storm Lord powerful enough to beat one of the most powerful tyrants they know? Or will all be lost?
Honestly Lisa Cassidy is fast becoming one of my favourite writers. It’s rare that I find a series where I find it constantly interesting enough to want to devour it quick to find out what happens next all through the books. The plot twists and the secrets that come to light are constantly keeping me guessing and the ending was yet another jawdropper and I wish I didn’t have work tomorrow so I could finish the final book in the series quick! Yet another fantastic book!
Time has passed since that horrible night when Arya’s mentor, and many others, lost their lives at the hands of the Nightstalker. Arya is not the confident person she once was. She is away from her friends, she’s hiding secrets and she knows the Nightstalker has not stopped looking for her.
This book, the third installment of the Inkweaver Chronicles, was my favourite (so far!). The action was tight, there were twists and turns, Arya’s secret was and wasn’t what I expected and I thoroughly enjoyed watching her begin to realize that in order to keep everything she loved safe, she was going to have to become the thing she was avoiding all along.
I love getting to learn more about the history of the world Lisa has built, as well as learning more about some of my favourite characters. This was a sit-and-read-it-in-one-go book for me and I am now impatient for the next book!!
Book 3 in the Inkweaver Archive series, The Wyvern's cry is an exciting story filled with intrigue, seemingly impossible battles, powerful friendships and the close bonds of family. The story continues with Arya facing new challenges and continuing danger from the powerful Nightstalker. With her confidence shaken following the events of The Dreadwater Gate, Arya faces difficult decisions in her quest to protect those she loves. Lisa Cassidy has created very real characters who readers can easily relate to. Arya is a fascinating and strong female character, who despite her doubts, still strives to protect those around her - I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series to see what she can accomplish!
I'm a huge fan of Lisa Cassidy's books and this current series, The Inkweaver Archive, is possibly going to be my favourite. Which is a huge call considering how much I love the others.
I had trouble putting The Wyvern's Cry down and read it in 2 days. I just needed and wanted to know more and more as each page, each battle, each strategy unfolded. And as always, I'm fully into the people that she creates in each series, the family created, both blood born and chosen.
I'm so ready for book 4 in 2025 and to find out where the Book 3, cliff hanger ending takes me. I know I'll be surprised, awed and loving every final nail-biting word until the final The End.
🍃…another glorious addition to the inkweavers archive!… …thrilling (to say the least), from start to finish ~ Lisa’s literary prowess carries you to the finish line with the most fervent excitement and alarming alacrity!… …she captivates you with hungering to bite into the magnificence of her otherworldly excitement ~ her cliffhanger written words of camaraderie are compelling as much as they are convincing ~ her character and world building are awe inspiring!,,, (thank you Lisa for this nail biting arc!)…🌻💗💭
Just completed this latest installment of of the Inkweaver Archives series (received as an ARC), and I wasn't disappointed. There are are some genuinely surprising revelations in this book, and you see even more sides to characters. Essa continues to be my favourite character, and she has has some real stand-out scenes. The ending is the perfect set-up to the final book in the series - very much looking forward to it.
Thank goodness I got an ARC for Lisa Cassidy’s latest as I’ve wanted to know what happens next. I’m already invested in these characters but love that the author unfolded this story in so many ways, surprised me and I still know there’s more good stuff to come. This authors pace of storytelling and level of content has never let me down.
This is the third book in The Inkweaver Archive, and in this book the action and intrigue continues to build with more plot twists and surprises. The character development is brilliant, and even the wyverns have their own personalities. This is another fast paced story that grabs you from the start. I can't wait to read the final book!
Fantastic third book in this series. Lisa Cassidy's writing is simply superb, the plot, the political machinations, the characters, the world building… It's exceedingly well done. She's a master of foreshadowing and the plot twists are beautifully woven. Can't wait for the last installment!
