The Velvet Fix

Rate this book
What’s a girl who hates attachment to do when she finds herself…getting attached?

With my adult boutique opening in three months, I’ve finally come up with a plan to defy my family’s labels and reclaim the confidence stolen by my crappy ex. All I need is a remodeled building and a Friend with Benefits to take me there.

It’s too bad my building is falling apart, the lawn is underwater, and all my dates are duds. To add insult to injury, the only person who can help me is my brother’s best friend, Ben Till, the man I’ve been trying—and failing—to hate for the past year. He’s infuriatingly handsome, obnoxiously competent, and worst of all, acting interested in me.

It’s no secret Ben is looking for The One, while I’m allergic to commitment. So why is the upstanding son of Mrs. Mayor offering to be my Friend with Benefits? If I agree to his proposition, I’ll need to draw careful boundaries. No kissing, no cuddling, and absolutely no spending the night.

Because I allowed Ben to hurt me once before, and I’m not willing to risk my heart again.

Rachel Kaye did it again! 🥳🔥 There was spice, sass, s** toys, speakeasy vibes, and HOT main characters you will swoon over and relate to! The crossover between her debut and THE VELVET FIX were so fun! The spicy scenes have SPICE and the slow burn is KILLER (but in all the best ways 😉)! Definitely looking forward to more from her and the Book & Brew Creative crew! ☕️✨

Book 2 from the Greyport series, a stand alone with interconnected characters. Here we meet Jill and Ben, Jill is James’s (book 1) sister and Ben is his best friend.. this one has all the tropes - brothers best friend, it was always you, mutual pining, friends with benefits and some spicy hot bedroom lessons! It’s a slow but steamy burn and a barely there 3rd act breakup, and I loved that for Ben and Jill after everything Jill had been through. Ben’s just been hiding in plain sight, holding off his years of pining until he jumped at the chance to get some FWB action! - who could blame him, they are both gorgeous! A delicious read to continue the series, looking forward to more from Rachel.

This book was a mix of steam, small-town chaos, and emotional tension. Jill and Ben had that messy, complicated chemistry that keeps you curious. She’s wild and guarded, he’s soft and steady. Two people who probably shouldn’t work, but somehow do in their own way.

The story had its own charm, and I could tell how much heart Rachel put into it. Some moments really stood out and made me smile, and I enjoyed the dynamic between Jill and Ben. It felt like a fresh take on familiar tropes, and I’m truly glad I got the chance to read it.

Between boutique renovations, emotional walls, and some seriously steamy moments, this one definitely brings the heat .

I was so lucky to be able to read this book a few weeks early. The pace was a little slow to start. But once it got going it was fantastic. I love a good emotional mmc. He was smart, driven, emotional, would not let anything happen to her. She was sex forward, bad ass business owner, and the mental health representation that we don’t always get to see. Best line “I don’t remember photosynthesis being this sexy”. Can’t wait to read what else comes in the Greyport series!

Thank you so much Rachel Kaye for this ARC!

I’ve been waiting for Jill and Ben’s story since reading The Christmas Fake and it did not disappoint! Like the previous book, once I started The Velvet Fix, I couldn’t put it down. Rachel’s style is fun and engaging and it was exactly what I needed!

I looooved the growing tension between Jill and Ben. He is sooo down bad for her. His POVs were particularly funny, I love a pathetic man 😋 He was READYYYY. But he’s also really sweet. I saw myself a lot in Jill, especially the whole “I don’t know what I’m doing with my life but I’m making my own path” thing. I enjoyed her being so open and positive towards sex. They make an amazing couple!

Can’t wait to read more books by this author!

Author: Rachel Kaye | Published: April 29, 2025 | Series: Greyport #2 | Length: 336 pages | Genre: Romance | Source: I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I want to start out by saying that I have met Rachel a handful of times now at various local bookish events, and she is such a sweet and kind human! Her books are very quickly becoming some of my favorite! I am beyond honored to be a part of her ARC team for this book!

I really liked this book! We start out back in the town of Greyport, this time following the sister of the MMC from the first book(The Christmas Fake). I was so excited to find out that we get a book about Jill and Ben. There were hints at something that had happened between them in the previous book, so I could not wait to jump in to find out what had happened!

Jill was such a great character! She faced some trauma in her past that had caused her sex life to fizzle out and not only was able to overcome it but also grow from it.

Ben is such an amazing, supportive human being! He’s very motivated, has a great job that he is very skilled at and he is so understanding towards Jill. He is everything I would ever want in a book boyfriend! Plus he tells her to use him as her friends-with-benefits *swoon*

One of my favorite things is when books have little Easter eggs from other books either in the series or from another book in general. This book has both! Yes, it is part of a series of standalones so we get to see a lot of the same characters again. But there are Easter eggs from The Ex Project by Jennifer Aline! I could not stand Oliver in The Ex Project and now I really cannot stand him! There is also another harasser that makes a brief appearance in name near the beginning of the book too! You don’t have to read he other books, but it definitely added a fun element while reading this book!

Again, I am so grateful that I was able to get this book and read it! I cannot wait to see what book Rachel puts out next!

LOVED The Velvet Fix!! Rachel Kaye’s second novel in the Greyport series was had it all, development of characters we met in book #1, small town romance, enemies to friends with benefits/lovers, GREAT banter between the main characters and a slow burn which (of course) lead to sex and romance between those main characters (Jill and Ben)!

These characters have known each other for years, and did NOT get along, which made hiding the friends with benefits situation easy at first. It was comical to read about their friends/coworkers figuring out that something was going on between them.

I truly enjoyed our FMC Jill coming into her own as an entrepreneur and opening her own business (especially since many doubted her). She was a strong female, working through personal insecurities while at the same time remodeling a building and designing it for her new business to sell sex toys and a have speakeasy as well! What a combo!

She enlisted the help of friends during the remodel, which became intense at times with her FWB Ben. Jill did a lot of the work herself, I felt she wanted to prove to herself and others that this idea of her was going to succeed!

I absolutely recommend this to anyone who enjoys the tropes I mentioned above, or needs/wants a fun book to provide a break for day to day life!

Thank you to the Book and Brew Creative for providing me a free ARC copy of the Velvet Fix!

The Velvet Fix was so addicting once I started I didn’t want to stop, I was thinking about it all day while I was working and out with friends so I was so excited when I got home and could sit down to read it! I love brother’s best friend, it’s one of my favorite tropes, and this one was so fun because Ben and Jill were know to have animosity towards each other, but then the whole town got confused when they became friends while working on renovating Jill’s store. Ben never really considered Jill as a romantic partner until she brought it to the front of his mind, but once he got the thought he never moved on, that boy fell hard and fast and I was here for it. Jill has some long lasting issues from a broken relationship and Ben is there to help her heal one step at a time, but the in the end it’s Jill that has to take the leap and learn to trust again and that is what makes this story so good!

I also loved seeing James and Emma again and how much they encouraged Jill to pursue her dreams and gave her a safe place of take risks. James reaction to finding out about Ben and Jill was fantastic and I loved that scene as well, it made me laugh and I loved how he handled it all. Can’t wait to see what comes next from this author!

Wow. I totally loved this one. This book was everything, fun, spicy, emotional and just really addictive. I couldn’t stop reading it once I started, it was seriously stuck in my head all day. Jill and Ben were so great together, their chemistry was crazy and their tension was really well done. Ben was totally in love with her, even if he didn’t admit it at first. His POVs made me laugh so much, he was so whipped and sweet at the same time. I loved him. He was amazing. I liked how Jill was figuring out her life and not being ashamed of what she wanted. Her past made her feel unsure, but she was so strong and real. Ben helped her feel safe again, but she also helped herself and that was beautiful. It wasn’t just about romance, but also about healing and taking control again. Also loved seeing sidecharacter James and Emma; their reactions and support made the story feel even more cozy. Loved that it is LGBTQ friendly. Rachel Kaye’s writing is fun and easy to get into. This book made me smile, swoon, and feel all the emotions. Can’t wait to read more from her. Thank you so much to the author for gifting me a copy of her book and giving me the opportunity to read it, I received this for free and I'm leaving an honest review.

✨ BOOK REVIEW ✨

'The Velvet Fix' is the 2nd book in the Greyport Series. This is about Jill, James' sister and his best friend Ben. Honestly, I didn't feel as much connected to the main characters as I did with the author's main characters of the previous book ' The Christmas Fake'.

It's not that it was bad or anything, but I felt as if it still missed some kind of element in it that I felt between James and Emma. As expected, there was spice and it was as usual it made me blush so much. My mind similar mostly to Ben's was going haywire. The banter was amazing, I loved how easily they were with each other, evidently enjoying but definitely not losing that building up tension between them.

Loved seeing James and Emma again, they're still so cute together. Kristy is definitely an amazing character, an amazing friend to both Emma and Jill. Amazing work by @rachel.kaye.writes

I absolutely loved the first book in this series - The Christmas Fake - and I loved the continuation of the series into this book - with it focusing on the relationship between James’ little sister, Jill, and his best friend, Ben.

I loved that the story involved the characters from the initial book - that part felt like a “returning home.” There were parts that had me laughing out loud, and I love the HEA ending. The book had a great amount of spice and I love that it is LGBTQ focused and friendly. I also loved the cross over to another book written by another author, The Ex-Project.

Overall, I lost myself in the book which is the main requirement for me to enjoy a book in general. It was an easy read - and kept me interested the entire way through with a good slow burn up until the very end. I can’t wait for another book to be added to the series - I love Rachel’s writing and story telling style.

This is the second book in the Greyport series but I read it as standalone. The story is written in a dual POV, which I like.

I thought Ben was a brilliant main character, he was everything you could ask for. However, I did feel sorry for him at times with Jill's manner towards him.

Jill, on the other hand I had very mixed feelings about. I liked the sassiness of her but didn't like the way she spoke to or treated Ben at times. I admired her for her drive to get her business to succeed, and I get why she treated Ben the way she did.

I did enjoy the book as there was some great banter between Ben and Jill as well as Jill and her friends. I was hoping for a good outcome for them both as Jill slowly let go of her past. I liked the range of supporting characters.

If you like a fun and spicy read, then this could just be what you're looking for.

So SO SO Good|!

Thank you to Rachel Kaye for my Advance Copy of The Velvet Fix. This book still lives rent free in my head. Its about a small town girl that wants to open her own Spicy Toy Store and Speakeasy. In all honesty I would love for this concept to become real because it sounds so amazing. Our FMC has self-esteem issues and she wants to get over her issues but she needs help, so she gets her brothers best friend to help her out!!! She wants him to be her friend with benefits.

He seems to love her from the very beginning and he will literally say "Use me"! I squealed out loud when he's saying that. He's also the local lawncare guy who is competent and composed and helpful with everything.

I love this book so much and everyone needs to read it! This is the 2nd book so far in this series and the characters are so amazing. I can't wait for more.

This is only the second installment of the Greyport Series and it has me hooked! I love the characters and the small town good feeling vibe. The Velvet Fix was a fun read that had me kicking my feet and grinning through out. Ben had me swooning! I must admit Jill did aggravate me with her self doubt and hate. BUT that’s what also made me love her, she is relatable in how fleeting a person can be as well as the self-work it takes to overcome past baggage. Once again Rachel has done great work with the back and forth banter of her characters making it feel like a movie is playing out. The spice was *chefs kiss* and loooooved the build up. Such a fun cozy read that I devoured this so quickly. I cannot wait to see what she has in store! Who knew I would become INVESTED in landscaping

ARC Review

Wow, I was not expecting anything this book gave me and I was here for it. I love the MFC being so strong in her own sexual needs.
And the way the two characters explore what the other likes and they get yays or nays along the way making sure that they're both enjoying what is happening is amazing.
I'm not going to lie. I kind of wish the rift between the two lasted a little longer but on the flip side I'm glad they worked things out quickly.

I have to say that originally I wasn't planning on reading the book because honestly I'm not a huge fan of the cover art. I feel like it makes Jill look a lot older than she actually is.

But, I'm super glad I read it and will be looking forward to more from this author.

This book was so good. I read the first book in the Greyport series and enjoyed it, so I was excited for this one and let me tell you it did not disappoint! I'm so thankful to have received an ARC of this book thank you so much Rachel Kaye. This was such a fun read I was hooked from start to finish. It's a dual POV friends with benefits, brother's best friend romance. All set in a quirky small town I mean what's not to love. I really liked the characters and their banter. I enjoyed how much of a hopeless romantic Ben was. Also, Jill's character as a whole and how relatable she is. I cannot recommend this book enough. I enjoyed this and the other book in the Greyport series and cannot wait to see what is next for Rachel Kaye!

📘 Book tour 📘

A great fun read, spice and banter.
I love Jill and Ben and this book has all the great tropes, brothers best friend, small town romance, he falls first plus lots of others.
Jill as the FMC has a strength even though he ex has dented her confidence, I love her body positivity.
Ben is tough and sweet and has been fighting his feelings towards Jill for a long time.
A great read, hard to put down, the flow in the writing was perfect. Cosy but spicy a great mix
Interconnected characters from the previous book but good as a standalone too, cannot wait for more from this Greyport series.

Thank you @novel.tours and @rachel.kaye.writes for having me on the tour and for a copy of the book

Thank you so much Rachel for gifting me this book.
I had so much fun reading it. It made me laugh, it made me feel, and I didn't want to put it down.
When a book makes me laugh like that, it just stays with me. It finds its way into my heart without even trying.
Thank you for introducing us to Ben and Jill. I adored them. The way they connected, the little moments between them, the tension, the softness... I couldn't get enough. I miss them already.
The art was stunning. The writing was beautiful. This book felt warm and comforting but also addictive in the best way. It was such a fun, fast-paced read, and I already know l'll come back to it again.
I'm officially binging everything you've written.

The Velvet Fix is a 'best friends sister' meets 'friends with benefits'. Rachel mixed these two troupes mixes so well!

Jill is such a relatable character with an evil ex's voice in her head hold her back from her full potential. Ben, the landscaper with tattoos muscle and a fun surprise 😘, all he wants to do is show Jill how perfect she is.

The spice was written so well. And to say that I'm in love with these characters is an understatement! The whole time I was reading had me torn between savoring this story and reading late into the night to see what happened next. I'd give 10 starts if these apps would let me ⭐️

"Whenever you're ready for more, you let me know, okay? I'm here for you to use in any way you like."

This was such a fun return to Greyport! We all know how a friends to benefits situation in a romance is going to work out but I’ll eat it up anyways. The MMC accepted a nd supported the FMC’s anxieties throughout the story in such a sweet manner. There was plenty of great banter and quite the slow burn. As in, everyone else can see you’re in love with each other, just get together already.

Great emotionally mature MMC and a sex positive FMC!

Thanks to the author for an ARC to review. Very enjoyable romance read.

This is a sweet story of two people who have been pining over each other for a long time but didn’t think the other was interested. The FMC was dealing with some insecurity stemming from a past relationship and the MMC saw an opportunity to help her (while “getting her out of his system”).

The FMC is cute and quirky and bold at times while also showing her insecurities at others . The MMC isn’t perfect. He doesn’t always say the right thing but he shows up when she needs him to. The side characters are fun and give a nosey small town feel.

The spice is my favorite part. Lots of tension and distinct spice coach vibe. The power dynamic shifts were fun and the MMC has a spicy secret!

Three words to describe this book:
Repaired Her Sinkhole 😉

For fans of:
Brothers best friend
Small town romance

Out of 5⭐️: 4⭐️

This is the second book in the Greyport series, a fictional small town. The way I squealed through this book! It’s sweet, it’s spicy, it’s fun to read!

Jill really goes through a path of self discovery and acceptance and even though I was frustrated with her sometimes, I could accept that she isn’t perfect and Ben was just the right guy to give her what she needed.

I was nervous because I did not read the first book in the series, but I had no trouble keeping up with the characters / storyline (and since I liked this one so much, I'll be going back and reading it). I loved the small town atmosphere where everyone knew Jill and Ben's business before they even knew it, and I am a sucker for long time friends who don't realize they've fallen. I enjoyed hearing about Jill's insecurities and how she wanted to help others feel confident. Ben was such a gift, always sensing what Jill needed including stepping back, even though it was killing him. The riff between them was barely a blip, but since this had a predictable ending, it didn't bother me.

I really enjoyed this book!
Jill is looking for a friends with benefits situation after having been burned by a previous relationship.
Ben is Jill's brothers best friend and a total relationship guy. He's had a thing for Jill for a while so when he finds out what she's looking for, he offers himself up.
This book had banter and spice! Of course one of my all time favorite tropes is brothers best friend! This book is an interconnected stand alone and I will definitely be going back and reading the first one!

The Velvet Fix is the second book in the Greyport series and follows Jill and Ben, who we first met in The Christmas Fake. Jill is opening a new business, part speakeasy-part sex toy shop, but wants to rebuild her sexual confidence after her ex did a number on her. Ben, her brother’s best friend and local landscaper, offers his assistance both in helping fix a drainage issue behind her store and being friends with benefits.

Jill and Ben’s chemistry is off the walls from the very beginning! Even though they are trying to keep things casual, it’s so clear they have feelings for each other. Ben’s PoV was especially fun to read since he is so down bad for Jill! Their steamy scenes were hot and added to the tension throughout the book. I also appreciated how they communicated with each other so openly as their relationship progressed.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from Rachel! Her ability to write complex characters with realistic problems is refreshing as a reader.

Thank you to Rachel Kaye and Book and Brew for the ARC!

I absolutely devoured this book in a hr and a half. It’s a fun, spicy, quick read. Jill and Ben have my whole heart ❤️ This book follows Jill who isn’t really looking for anyone serious but Ben falls hard for her. Him immediately helping her at the Velvet when she needs him is everything. I won’t give anything away but there is a deal made and stars aligned! @rachel.kaye.writes this book is amazing! Book two in the interconnected standalones. Although I did enjoy book one more, this was still a cute story. Ben has had a crush on his best friends little sister forever. So when she’s one a painfully bad date he offers to help her with her confidence problem. These two are at their cutest when they have their friend dates with popcorn and trash tv. I lived for those sweet quiet moments.

The Velvet Fix by Rachel Kaye.
Greyport series book 2.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved the cover and blurb of this book. I got into it straight away. I loved Ben's character. I wasn't sure about Jill. She sort of grew on me. I didn't like how she was with Ben at times. I loved the writing style and the story. I'm hoping there is more to come. Recommend.

So unique and fun! I was hooked from page one! Especially once you find out what kind of business Jill is opening (*wink*). Ben is amazingly sweet, and they are both incredible characters...so real and genuine. This book is filled with so many swoony and touching moments…not to mention all the Easter eggs from the other books! Love it so much!
