A violent storm erupts over the small town of Kearny, bringing a devastating mudslide. Amongst the debris the worn threads of a child’s blanket her long dark hair matted with the fallen earth that killed her.
When the rescue team find rope marks around the ankles of the teenage girl, they call in Detective Delaney Pace. Fourteen-year-old Marilyn Littlewolf went missing five years ago after moving to Kearny from a local reservation. Fearing she was dead, nobody expected Marilyn to ever come home. So where has she been? And why is her body covered in bruises?
Delaney thinks Marilyn was held captive in the mountains that tower above the town, but with acres of remote wilderness to search, the investigation seems impossible. Diving into Marilyn’s case, one name stands out that makes her blood turn cold as her friend and longstanding babysitter to her two adopted daughters, Skeeter Rawlins.
Racing to his home, she finds it in disarray, it’s clear he left in a hurry. In disbelief, Delaney takes in the empty whisky bottles and wonders if she was wrong to trust her reliable old friend with her darling girls?
As evidence piles up against Skeeter, Delaney’s heart shatters when another girl is reported missing. Tracing her to a remote cabin deep in the woods, she fears she’s about to finally uncover the truth about her once-trusted friend. But when she bursts into the disheveled shack nothing could have prepared her for what she finds. Was she wrong to suspect Skeeter as the twisted mind behind the missing girls? And is she already too late to save another innocent life?

HER FORGOTTEN SHADOW (Detective Delaney Pace Book #4) by Pamela Fagan Hutchins is a fast-paced, intense small town police procedural. Delaney and Leo are back in action investigating a series of crimes with young Crow heritage girls disappearing from Kearney, Wyoming. This book can be read as a standalone for the crime thriller plot, but this is a series with characters evolving throughout and their interactions impact the plot at times in other books. I have enjoyed reading them all in order.
When workers go to clear a landslide off the road after a storm, they discover the body of a young girl in the mud. Delaney and Leo discover it is a young girl who disappeared five years ago and was thought to be with her absentee father in Montana on the Crow reservation. Where has she really been? When another girl goes missing and is found dead at the base of a cliff, some of the clues are pointing to Delaney’s friend and babysitter, P.I. Skeeter Rawlins who is missing with another missing young Crow girl.
While some of the evidence leads Delaney and Leo to a teacher at the middle school who has a connection with all three girls, there is still a danger lurking in the mountains. It is a race to save the missing girl and unravel who is responsible.
I love this exciting series not only for the interesting crime plots, but also for the emotional character interactions. Delaney and her girls always make me laugh as well as feel the emotional ups and downs of raising young girls. Leo and Delaney have a relationship that is so frustrating and yet realistic. I do wish Delaney had a little more faith in Leo and not always jump to conclusions brought on by someone else’s interference. The crime plot in this book was intense and heart-breaking. It moves at an ever-increasing pace right up to the conclusion and was very realistic. I am looking forward to reading about the next criminal investigation in Kearney, finding out if Delaney and Leo work out their relationship, and seeing if Delaney and Skeeter discover if her mother is truly still alive.
I highly recommend this harrowing small town crime thriller/police procedural! I am anxiously waiting for the next book in the series.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review."Her Forgotten Shadow" with its fast paced and intense storyline will immerse readers into a dark, mysterious and suspenseful world. A world where Detective Delaney Pace strives to unravel a decade-old mystery linked to a series of recent disappearances. Alongside the investigation, she finds herself dealing with the troubling possibility of a close friend's involvement in the mysterious disappearances.
"Her Forgotten Shadow" marks the fourth installment in the riveting Detective Delaney Pace series. While each novel presents a unique mystery, making them enjoyable on their own, the characters' personal journeys continue to evolve throughout the series. For a richer experience, it's beneficial to read them sequentially.
In the aftermath of a storm and mudslide, the body of a young girl turns up. Upon investigating, Delaney discovers that the corpse was that of a young girl of Crow ethnicity. She went missing five years ago. Not sure if her death could be classified as a murder Delaney and her boss, Leo decides to investigate her whereabouts in the last five years. However, when another girl of the same ethnicity turns up dead in a similar fashion, Delaney realized there was more to the case than she first imagined. She finds herself in more of a turmoil when evidence uncovered points to her friend private investigator Skeeter Rawlins.
In my opinion, a great mystery is one that keeps you guessing right up to the final page. "Her Forgotten Shadow" does just that, providing a riveting and thrilling tale. Dark elements, particularly concerning the young age of the victims and their grim experiences permeates the story. Moreover, the crimes are steeped in intense religious beliefs. The story compelled me to keep reading, eager to learn the perpetrator's identity. The novel strikes a fine balance between the mystery and the personal lives of the characters. Readers see Delaney not just as a detective but also as a mother. Additionally, one observes her inner turmoil over her feelings for Leo and her reaction to his presence on various dating platforms.
"Her Forgotten Shadow" weaves a tale that masterfully blends elements of the mystery and thriller genres. Its centered around a complex investigation that promises to keep readers guessing right up to the final page. The story written within the pages of this book is designed to captivate readers, holding them in suspense and leaving them questioning whether the truth come to light before time runs out. This review was originally posted on Totally Addicted to Reading
I have read 12 of this author’s book now and every single time I finish one I immediately wanna start another. She does a really good job at keeping you captivated, keeping you questioning and keeping you reading.
Once again, Delaney and Leo are on the hunt for some unsavoury types having found their way to their hometown.
I love the way Delaney is devoted to her daughters and her job, but it seems like she often forgets she has the right to have a life too. Will the voice of her heart shout louder this time than her brain's?
Delaney is a force to be reckoned with. What she lacks in muscle when she has to fight a man, she gains on a different level: she can always rely on her technique. Sometimes she bides her time, luring her opponent into a false sense of security before taking the upper hand.
I cannot wait to read the next part, because it already sounds very intriguing and promising. 5 stars
Hutchins, you do,love to torture me dont you?? What sicko pervert is stalking and taking Native American girls who end up gone?? I blindly followed the clues but my detective inclinations were on vacation. All my attention was focused on will she let them be together?? I wanted to snarl at every woman who swiped on Leo and run down Delaney with Shelley so she’d see the light. And then like manna from heaven, Hutchins granted my wish. Only to snatch it cruelly away!!! Now I’m like that isolated mountain cabin who is off the grid because I have to impatiently wait for the next installment. I don’t fare well in primitive abodes so I hope the next book comes quickly!! Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the early read.
✅ The Detective Delaney Pace series is one that just seems to draw me in more and more with each book. With each investigation Delaney and Leo get drawn into, I become so invested in what’s going on. This is a good thing right? But….this makes for me not wanting to put the book down once I start reading. So much mystery and suspense! Be prepared for a very disturbing and dark read. I am intrigued with Delaney and Leo’s relationship issues. One step forward, two steps back and repeat. The slow burn is killing me! The ending????? Talk about a cliff hanger! Please read the series from the beginning. So much backstory you need to know about. I can’t wait for the next book! Soon I hope????
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Pamela did a great job with this one. I absolutely love this book/series!! It kept me on the edge of my seat, trying to figure out who was taking all the teenage girls. Delaney is such a strong character, and I love her! Will she be able to help all the missing girls in time? You must read on to see if her and Leo can help find the person behind it all. Thank you, Netgalley, for the chance to read this book in return for my honest review.
Delaney and Leo are back! A young woman is found dead and turns out to be a missing person from years ago. Delaney won’t stop until she solves it. Plus has her girls to deal with and now something weird is up with Skeeter. Not to mention her avoiding her feelings for Leo. I found myself turning pages as fast as I could. This is one of my favorite new series. Can’t get enough of these characters. Looking forward to what’s next. #LeoForSheriff
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.
Pamela Fagan Hutchins delivers another electrifying installment in the Detective Delaney Pace series with Her Forgotten Shadow. This fourth book is a masterclass in suspense, blending a gripping plot with deeply human characters and a vividly realized setting.
The novel begins with a violent storm that triggers a devastating mudslide in the small town of Kearny. Amidst the chaos, the body of fourteen-year-old Marilyn Littlewolf is discovered, her long dark hair matted with earth and rope marks around her ankles. Marilyn had been missing for five years, and her reappearance as a corpse raises chilling questions. Detective Delaney Pace is called in to unravel the mystery, suspecting that Marilyn was held captive in the remote mountains. As Delaney dives deeper into the case, she uncovers a web of secrets that point to her trusted friend, Skeeter Rawlins.
Characters: Hutchins excels in creating complex, relatable characters. Delaney Pace is a formidable protagonist whose determination and vulnerability make her a compelling lead. Her personal connections to the case add layers of emotional depth, making her investigation all the more urgent. Skeeter Rawlins, once a trusted friend, becomes a figure of suspicion, adding to the novel’s intricate web of relationships and motives.
Writing Style: Hutchins’ writing is both evocative and precise, capturing the atmospheric tension of a small town besieged by natural and human threats. Her prose is sharp and engaging, with a pacing that keeps readers on the edge of their seats.
Her Forgotten Shadow explores themes of trust, betrayal, and the resilience of the human spirit. The novel delves into the impact of past traumas on present actions, highlighting how unresolved issues can resurface in unexpected and dangerous ways.
Her Forgotten Shadow is a standout entry in the Detective Delaney Pace series, showcasing Pamela Fagan Hutchins’ talent for crafting suspenseful, emotionally resonant crime thrillers. The novel’s intricate plot, well-drawn characters, and atmospheric setting make it an unputdownable read.
Highly recommended for fans of gripping mysteries and psychological thrillers.
I am wowed yet again by Pamela Fagan Hutchin's storytelling and her Detective Delaney Pace series! Her Forgotten Shadow kept me on my toes, with my pulse racing, fearing the worst while hoping for the best as Delaney searches for a missing girl while trying to catch a killer. Whew! There is never a dull moment in this gripping and shocking book!
A storm is brewing above the town of Kearny and when a young teenager’s body is found covered in bruises and with a strange tattoo, Delaney is left scratching her head while wanting to dive into the investigation while tiptoeing around other officers. From the start, she knows this is not going to be an easy case, but she is strong, brave, determined and ready to dive in. With Leo helping, she hopes to solve the case ASAP!
I enjoyed the mystery in this case. I was fully invested in learning who and why young teenage girls are being taken. I also enjoyed seeing Delaney in mother mode as she balancing her work and personal life.
I loved the atmosphere of this book. I love the location, and how the elements played a part in this book as well. I also loved the tension between the characters in both their professional and private lives. The sense of dread and danger creep into the book and simmer just below the surface of the book.
Her Forgotten Shadow kept me on my toes and had me turning the pages! Plus, then the ending has me wanting more! I can't wait to see what is going to happen next!
Wonderfully written, well plotted, perfectly paced, shocking and gripping, Pamela Fagan Hutchins has delivered yet again!
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
Her Forgotten Shadow by Pamela Fagan Hutchins is the 4th book in the excellent Detective Delaney Pace series and I have been hooked from the first book of this series. it is fast paced police procedural. set in a small town of Kearny. It is full of twists and turns throughout that will have you turning the pages quickly to find out what happens next.
When a violent storm erupts over the small town of Kearny, bringing a devastating mudslide. Amongst the debris the worn threads of a child’s blanket her long dark hair matted with the fallen earth that killed her. WoW.........
The rescue team find rope marks around the ankles of the teenage girl, they call in Detective Delaney Pace.
As all the evidence piles up against Skeeter, Delaney’s heart shatters when another girl is reported missing.
This book was so good, especially as it can be read as a standalone but I do recommend you read the other three books. They will not disappoint!
I was hooked from the first page and absolutely flew through this in one sitting. I'm really enjoying getting to know these characters better and can't wait to read the next one.

Wasn't really /for/ me. Content warnings: Death, murder, Copaganda, rape of underage girls, inappropriate age gaps, kidnapping, fetishization and forced assimilation of Native American girls
While Hutchins gave a compelling mystery there are some things in this that were really yucky to me. It is very strange to me that the only girl who survives is the Good Pure Christian Girl(tm) who uses her Knowledge of the Bible(tm) to prevent her abuse from happening before she can be rescued. While Marilyn and Sue, in so few words, were not given the same grace as they have issues, promiscuity and abuse in their life- but no mention of being Christian. While Delaney seems to be an ex-Christian and claims to be critical of the religious life, she really isn't- even has a moment with god towards the end that deepens her relationship with him. And I don't say that as a bad thing, I thought it was a really touching moment that echoes parts of my faith. BUT it does not that away the icky, yucky feeling behind the choices made.
Also Delaney and Leo's relationship is incredibly annoying, especially at the end when they're getting together- then Leo does something she doesn't like and she immediately discards him instead of, I donno, talking to him? Because in the same conversation she mentions the feds have used forced against Leo for his cooperation before, and yet she doesn't thing that it might the case this time too. That alone made me desperately not want to continue this series
I've read every book by Pamela Fagan Hutchins. I love Delaney Pace as a character. And I love her boss, the sheriff, Leo. They work really well together, even as they fight their attraction.
A girl who has been missing for years, turns up dead in a landslide not far from where she lived. But word was that she had moved to be closer to family when she disappeared. So why is she here? And why does it look like she's been tortured for a really long time?
Then another girl disappears, and then another. All of the girls are Crow Native Americans. As Delaney and Leo work to solve the apparent abductions, they have interference from other law enforcement agencies. And Delaney's employee, Skeeter, appears to be hitting the skids - all at the same time. Her newly adopted nieces knew the two most recently disappeared girls.
There is so much going on in this book. And you have to admire Delaney's investigative skills and intuition. She's a gem. She keeps on working to address the most urgent matters while having so many things on her mind.
This is another wonderful suspenseful book, taking place in isolated Wyoming.
Her Forgotten Shadow by Pamela Fagan Hutchins is a belter of a thriller based in a remote, rural community in Wyoming.
A rescue team is working a mudslide when they discover a deceased girl, who is identified as a girl who disappeared 5 years previously from a local reservation and who everybody assumed was either with family, or who had already passed away. But, in addition to finding her body, marks of forced captivity are evident upon her person, raising the question, where has she been for the last five years?
Det. Delaney Pace is called in to investigate along with Sherriff Leo, a partnership with an intense slow burn outside of their dynamic professional partnership.
Girls from the reservation continue to disappear, but not everythig is as it seems...
This is the first book from this author I have read and the third in the series (although it can be read as a strong standalone) A very strong thriller from an accomplished author that I will be adding to my favourites list
Thank you to Bookouture, NetGalley and Pamela Fagan Hutchins for this incredible ARC. My review is left voluntarily and all opinions are my own
Her Forgotten Shadow by Pamela Fagan Hutchins 2/1/2025 Kindle
I first read this author four years ago. Looking back on my comments, I see I wasn’t impressed. While I found parts of this further installment of the series not to my liking, overall the story held my interest. It was too gory in parts and the love interest seemed soap standard. Once you learn something remains unresolved, it’s a hint not to bother with further episodes where the same problems are sure to be extended.
We’re in small town Wyoming when the body of a girl gone missing five years earlier is discovered. She had been listed a runaway. Investigation had ceased, however when another girl is soon abducted and dies trying to escape. A third victim follows.
Detective Delaney Pace and her boss for whom she shares feelings, sort the clues and other shameful happenings. It’s difficult for her to concentrate given all going on at home, and suspicions her friend Skeeter Rawlings , sitter of her teenage children is less than forthcoming.
This series is far from the top of my list, but entertaining enough to give it another try.
Her Forgotten Shadow (Detective Delaney Pace #4) was my first read by Pamela Fagan Hutchins. The story begins with a terrible mudslide following a brutal storm. In the debris, a 14 year old girl is found. Unexpectedly, the girl shows signs of abuse and turns out to be a girl who went missing five years earlier.
It is easy to quickly become drawn into the story and it's main characters. I found myself reading as fast as I could trying to find out how this story would unfold. Many characters are introduced with the curiosity of how they are potentially involved. Unfortunately, it was a few too many in my opinion.
As the story was coming to an end, I found myself having to look up characters to remember who they were and what their relationships were. This was an excellent story ... but a bit too disorienting when it came to the various characters. I was disappointed in the ending, but we can't all have it our way!
Thank you NetGalley for providing me with this ARC to review. All opinions are my own.
I’ve read the first book in the Detective Delaney Pace series. This is the fourth book but I didn’t feel I missed out by not reading book two and three but it does make me want to read them. I also noticed how the series has come into its own since reading book one. This one was binged in a couple of days, I couldn’t put it down and loved all the different dynamics. You get several of the characters points of view and I would have loved a little more of the perpetrators point of view but that’s just me being noisy 🤩. It has well developed, likeable characters that you could totally get invested in. I really liked how the author turned a storyline around in her own unique way. It moves at a steady pace and I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. Really enjoyed this one and looking forward to the next instalment. This one is another series to add to my list.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review #HerForgottenShadow
This is book 4 in the Detective Investigator Delaney Pace series. It's set in Kearny, Wyoming where, Delaney and her boss, Sherriff Leo Palmer are part of the local Sherriff's department. Delaney and Leo are called out to investigate a body of a young girl found after a mudslide in the mountains nearby. Who is she? How did she end up here? What happened? Once they discover the identity belongs to a missing 14 year old from 5 years ago, they seek to unravel the mystery. Shortly afterwards, a second girl is found dead then a 3rd girl has gone missing. The hunt is on to bring the offender to justice. I love Delaney as she is a feisty, strong lady who has recently adopted two teenagers - her niece and a friend and she relies on Skeeter Rawlins, who is a very unusual nanny! The story is fast paced and it's an unputdownable book that I finished in one day. All the sub plots are brought together with a dramatic ending.
A thrilling ride of mystery, terror and deceit! Hutchins keeps making Delaney Pace better with each book! When she first came on the pages she was haunted by the past and heart set on finding answers and retreating. She never expected to give her heart to her newly made family in such a deep way, and the depth she's grown as a person while doing so is shining bright. This particular case hits a little too close to home and involves so many secrets and lies that keep sending her in various directions. I was hooked from the very start and enchanted until the end. I love Delaney and can't wait to see what's in store next with the secrets revealed at the end! Well developed storyline, relatable characters and plenty of drama to sink our teeth into. Loved it!
I highly recommend this book as well as the rest of the series to anyone that loves a strong female police lead who works diligently to bring the criminals to justice and keep those close to her safe.
Delaney Pace is the kind of detective you want on your case, that is, if you are the right side of the law. Her heart is so invested in the cases of these missing girls. She thinks of them as if they were her own girls. When two of the missing girls turn up dead in the most horrific of circumstances, she and her sherrif boss, Leo, are in hot pursuit, but which way to turn. Now add another missing girl, a suspicious disappearance of PI and Delaney's "Nanny", Skeeter, a high school teacher who has been much too interested in each of the missing girls, and you just know they have their man. But the plot thickens! You just have to read to believe that this mystery can get even more convoluted! And... will Delaney and Leo ever get in sync with their like for each other? I'm not telling. What a read! Thanks, Pamela for nights of lost sleep reading!
Her Forgotten Shadow is the 4th book in the Detective Delaney Pace series by Pamela Fagan Hutchins. I am absolutely obsessed with this series!!!! I can't wait for the next book to be released!
This book was so good that I could not put it down! Set in small-town Wyoming, this book was a fast read and kept me on the edge of my seat! I thought the story was fabulous, filled with unexpected twists and turns. I love the characters! I've become so attached. I look forward to reading the future books in the series! I need more!!!
I highly recommend reading Her Cold Heart and the entire Detective Delaney Pace series!
Her Forgotten Shadow (Detective Delaney Pace # 4) by Pamela Fagan Hutchins Publisher: Bookouture Genre: Mystery & Thrillers Published: October 9, 2024
Her Forgotten Shadow (Detective Delaney Pace Book 4): A completely gripping and unputdownable crime thriller by Pamela Fagan Hutchins.
I have read the other books in this series and like this character and her team. Her Forgotten Shadow is a good addition to this crime thriller series. However, sometimes the story felt disjointed, and the alternative timeline was cumbersome.
I am a fan of this series and this author. I would recommend this book and would suggest reading this series from book 1. Her Forgotten Shadow is a good addition to this series.
Any mystery story that I cannot figure out is a winner. This one will keep you guessing until the very end. Delaney and Leo are called in to figure out what happened when a girl is found dead after a mud slide. It is clear that she was held captive and that the original investigation wasn't done well. She is trying to not step on toes while balancing out finding out the truth when another girl goes missing. This hits home for Delaney as she is struggling to balance motherhood and the job. Making matters worse is that her friend and help Skeeter is acting suspicious. There are plenty of twists and turns with the story and the author nicely sets up the next book in the series.
Book 4 in the Detective Delaney Pace series delivers another great mystery of Native American Girls going missing, with two abductions close together, the pressure is on to find out who is targeting these young women and why.
Skeeters background and story comes out in this book and if you have read the first three prepare for the continued simmering sparks between Delaney and Leo, will they or won't they give a relationship a try....
The ending leaves a teaser for the books to come, but not a cliff hanger that has you in disbelief of, no, you can't just end it there!!!
Delaney Pace is someone that you want in your corner. She is extremely loyal and loves her family and those close to her. The dynamics between her and Leo help to keep the story moving. This book had a number of intertwining lines as they sheriffs office tries to work with the police department on the same case. It gets complicated by the case of Marilyn, then Sue and then another girl goes missing. The author does a great job keeping the story going, dropping clues, following leads, blending family interactions all to come to the conclusion. Challenge you to read and see if you figure out the ending.
This is my 3rd Pamela Fagan Hutchins book . I love the character, Detective Delaney Pace and the love she shows for her niece, Kat and Carrie. Her devotion to the citizens of Kearney and her willingness to put her life on the job. In this story, there is a serial kidnapper who has been kidnapping indigenous girls. Two have been found dead-one from a mudslide and another from falling from a cliff. Now a young girl, Ashley is gone and Delaney with Sheriff Joe work all the angles to find her alive. It is fast paced and you can't wait to have them find the culprit yet you don't want the story to end.
This is Book 4 of the Detective Investigator Delaney Pace series.
This is the first book in the series I have read and what an introduction!
The story follows Delaney as she covers the truth behind a young girl who has been found in a terrible state.
The story is fast paced abd keeps you on your toes.
I really enjoyed the main character being a female and I loved learning about her and all her quirks.
The story itself is quite sad, which makes the book even more powerful as it is beautifully written to pull you into the book with the characters and into the action.
