It’s the end of summer, and that means just one thing in amateur sleuth Evelyn Foster’s newly adopted hometown of Granite, Michigan...it’s time for the annual Rock Festival. This particular festival is literally about rocks, not music.
Eve and her dogs adjust to the influx of tourists into the normally quiet town, and she and her friends have a great time together at the festival, but in the midst of fun and chaos, something goes terribly wrong.
When they leave the fairgrounds, they discover a body…in Eve’s car.
Along with the body is a note that is beyond creepy.
Unsure why she’s seemingly being targeted by a killer, Eve finds herself jumping at shadows and continually glancing over her shoulder.
Is she next on the killer’s list? Can she chip away at the case in time to save herself?
When Cozy Mystery author, Patti Benning, isn’t busy plotting the deaths of multiple fictitious characters, she loves to spend time hiking with her rescue dog, Max, who is her bestest writing buddy.
Patti loves to cook and the food in her books has been tried and tested in her very own kitchen. She’s technologically shy, and stays away from social media a great deal, because it makes her feel more awkward and introverted than meeting someone face to face.
Writing is the perfect job for her because in her books, she gets to explore all the topics she loves, food, animals, crafts and reading. She loves her readers dearly, and is thankful for the opportunity to share with them through her work.
"Rocking It" is Book 3 of the Search and Rescue Cozy Mystery series, written by Patti Benning. This series focuses on Evelyn "Eve" Foster, her two Search and Rescue dogs, her friends, and, naturally, a murder! This episode is rocking it, not with a Rock & Roll Festival but with a festival showcasing all kinds of rocks. The day is perfect for a festival with its rocks, other booths, and food booths. Eve is not alone, but with four other friends: Tiana, Eve's best friend; Tiana's boyfriend, Levi; and Eve's new friends, Aidan and Alice, who are a brother and sister. The festival goes along swimmingly, until a dead body shows up in the back seat of Eve's car, and Eve's and Tiana's purses were stolen from under the front seat. I know, why in the world would anybody leave a purse under the front seat of a car? I've heard of people doing this, but I live in a big city and I would never leave my purse anywhere in a car. And there are thieves in a town as small as Granite, Michigan, the scene of our series. Who is the thief? Who is the murderer. Are they two separate crimes, or were both crimes committed by one person. This is a great series, and each novella is a complete standalone reading experience, although they are enjoyed more if read in chronological order. I gave this book 5 stars and will read Book 4 soon.
This was a great combo of cozy and slightly creepy as Eve dealt with unwanted male attention from someone new in town, someone who’s not new seems to have a bone to pick with her and whoever left that body in her car might be targeting her. I thought sure I had the killer picked out, but boy was I wrong again. It’s not real often that I guess the killer in this author’s books, but it’s always fun to try.
The showdown was kinda strange, but everything worked out as always and a killer was hauled away. To top that off, Eve didn’t have to worry about the unwanted attention anymore and definitely found herself wondering about someone else who was super nice and whether she should date again. I say go for it!
Why market these books as novels when they're only the length of novlla?
I long for strong characters. In the book, Eve is asked to meet someone at the local coffee shop only to find it closed for repairs. The person she's to meet arrives, and inside the coffee shop is the one who is stalking her. The stalker invites her and the other person inside.
She agrees because she "doesn't want to make a scene." Really! All she has to do is walk off. If she wants to be polite, she can say, "No," and then walk off. Instead, she goes inside at the invitation of the person she already is highly uncomfortable, who is stalking her, and with another person who broke into Eve's car and stole her purse.
A Rock Festival that is actually about rocks not music is the background in this cozy mystery. Eve finds a dead body in her car when she leaves the festival. She and her rescue dogs will have their work cut out to find a killer. Who also left a creepy note? Is her life at stake as well or can she solve the cas before it is too late? It is a fast paced killer read.
Eve joins her friends at the annual town rock festival. They are having a great time until they get ready to leave. When they get back to her car they find a dead body. From there the mystery deepens with many twists and turns. It is a fun read with a surprise ending.
The plot is okay but it's unnecessarily wordy in places that dont move the story forward. Lots of repetition in setting scene and presenting characters done in first two books. These could've been done in different ways for first time readers so those who read prior books wouldn't get it again with almost identical wording.
This is one of my favorite series by this prolific author. Love the storyline, who could dislike search and rescue tales. The story is well written and the characters became like friends after the first book. Don’t miss this book/series.
FS: “Do you want a drink tray with this order, miss?” Evelyn Foster eyed the five iced coffees sitting on the counter in front of her.:
LS: "Maybe it was time to start thinking about dating again, because the butterflies in her stomach whenever she was around him were starting to become impossible to ignore."
Another delightful dead body mystery solved. But the puppy doggies were not really helpful this time. Maybe she should date? Or make her own coffee? No she get more attention at the shop!
Everyone has hard days in life, but the main character, Eve, seems to have more than her fair share. Will she get her dog certified or will she have more bad luck?
